'I rate him!' - Wenger reveals admiration for 'quality' LFC flop. Sign him then...!

Given his preferred style of play, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is the last manager you'd expect to express admiration for Liverpool flop Andy Carroll, but in his pre-match press conference on Friday, the Frenchman praised Carroll's form for West Ham, and expressed sympathy for the way things turned out at Anfield.

Speaking to the Press on Friday, Wenger - who has signed only seven English players in his 14 years in charge of the Gunners - said:

"I rate him [Carroll] as a player. I don't think we have seen the best of him yet, but Carroll has the quality and that will come out with time.

"He started well [at Newcastle], but then had to deal with huge expectation on his shoulders after a massive transfer to an historic club [Liverpool].

"Maybe it was a bit too early for him, but since I've seen him at West Ham, he looks like the Carroll we've seen at Newcastle; playing with more freedom and less pressure"

This is not the first time Wenger has praised Carroll. In November 2010, he enthused:

"Of his type of forward he is outstanding. He was a real handful against us. He is hard to play against"

At Monaco, Wenger used Mark Hately as the big target man upfront, and he sees similarities between Carroll and the former AC Milan forward:

"Yes there are similarities between Carroll and Hateley although when I had Hateley at Monaco he was much older. Carroll is young and has great potential"

So, according to Wenger, Carroll is:

* Outstanding.
* A real handful.
* hard to play against.
* Full of 'great potential'.

With such admiration for the player, perhaps Wenger might do Liverpool a favour and sign Carroll next summer...?

  1. I'd hate to see him in an Arsenal shirt. He's made a scape goat for our failings of the last 2-3 years but surely a good manger could bring the best out of him. I understand he doesn't fit into Rodgers system but Wenger is bang on with his 4 key assessments of Carroll. He's only 23 so he has a long career ahead and he is still developing. Lots of fans call for Pacheco to be given a chance yet he's at a similar age and looks better suited to a continental club.
    As Rodgers said and FSG state, judge us in the long term, not the short. Carroll was signed with a vision for the long-term, a player with undoubted potential which sadly, many fans judged after just a few months and decided to make a scape-goat. So many mangers lavish praise on him, he's recalled to the England squad after a 30 minute cameo in the week. The player must have something about him.

    Carroll is class,he has more to him than long balls he can play to feet. I want Rodgers to call him back in January and buy another striker. That would do me :)

  3. If he is a flop then what does it say about your club down at the wrong end?

  4. If u like him so much then sign him. Can u please pay at least half of the money we paid for him. IT WOULD B GREAT. Merci Wenger

  5. youre absolutely right, nice statement!!
    in my point of view you cant even know his maximum. In the right system he could get unplayeable and hes a turret in front of the goal. the thing is just - we wont use him under rodgers. So if this season gets bad and FSG sack Rodgers (hopefully not, i think rodgers is perfect for us) we ll use carroll again after the loan, if rodgers remains coach, we ll sell him.
    i cant see any way liverpool will use both at the same time...
    so for me, FSG made a misstake in picking the right Boss. Not for liverpool, but for the individual likes of the players. they should have known that rodgers wont use carroll..
    Please dont see this as a critisism against rodgers, im totally behind him, but its just hard to play players that are not made for his tactics such as adam carroll ...
    they made their bad tranfers even worse.
    Im not against rodgers once again!

  6. carroll will be in top 4 goal scorers this season if injury free. we have wasted a good player. 10 times the player of borini.
    our loss will be someones gain

  7. How many of the posters praising Carroline here are British.... the proper assessment of him would be.

    1) Slow
    2) Technically poor with the ball at his feet.
    3) Goes down easier than my prom date.
    4) Will never be able to beat anyone off of the dribble and create his own goals.
    5) For all the hype about his aerial skills 90% of his headers go right to the keepers hands!

  10. Wenger is just being diplomatic n he was hoping for Carroll to play.Carroll is the most overrated player in Britain for the last 100 years perhaps n Liverpool is lucky to get 20% of what they paid Newcastle.To the British he's phenomenal but to the rest of the world he's a complete waste of money.

  11. If you mistake ANDY CARROLL for a female, your prom date must of looked like something you see on JERRY SPRINGER.
    Don't be fooled by long hair.Deep voice, hairy face and muscles means run!

  17. Sarcasm, right? You don´t rate Carroll from what I can gather, but plenty of managers do. I don´t think his style necessarily suits Liverpool, but I trust Wenger´s judgement on players, and I think he´s dead right. Carroll is a real handful, very difficult for defenders to play against, still a young player with plenty to learn, and the pressure of his price-tag probably affected him, as Wenger suggested. I think when successful managers give their opinion, we´ve got to respect it. That´s not to say his style would suit Arsenal either, so I doubt Wenger will bid for him.

    Everyone´s got an opinion, but it´s one thing stating it, and it´s another thing proving yourself in the real world, living and dying by your convictions. It´s much easier to be an armchair blogger/pundit. ;) That goes for posters too. I´m sitting on a couch as I write this. :)

    However, I believe Carroll´s got what it takes to play in the premier league. The match he played against us for Newcastle before we bought him, he gave us a torrid time, and was the difference for them that day. I think he´s more at home in a Newcastle or West Ham and I reckon he´ll have a successful career too, but we´ll see.

  18. I would offer "yes" here. And he´s proven it. Henry, Viera, Anelka, etc etc etc. The man has a gift for identifying potential and developing it. As for Rogers we´ll wait and see. A tad arrogant to think you know more about players than one of the best talent spotters and managers the premier league has ever seen. I´m a big supporter of Rogers too, but he´s yet to prove himself. I hope he will.

  19. Yes we are at the wrong end of the table, but we would be there with or without AC. IMO he does not fit at Liverpool. We are paying for previous mismanagement & it will take time to 'right the wrongs'.

  20. Arsene would get the best out of Carroll and get him to think about the game a lot more.

  21. Who cares how many of us are British? Doesn't make a difference. Regarding point 4, you might want to watch his goal against Chelsea in the cup final, a match where he totally ruined their defence. Point 5, you must be watching another Andy Carroll, he scores shed loads of headers, something unfortunately we won't get many of this season.

  22. FSG. what do they know of football? These jokers call baseball "world Series". Can anyone name 3 countries that play baseball?
    if they continue their policy of not spending, we will be a mid table team for years to come.

  25. The 'World Series' is not called the world series because of some trumped up notion that is is played by all the best teams in the world, but because it was originally conceived and sponsored by The World newspaper! Numpty!

  26. A player like AC would probably do very well in a league like Italy. I think he could be a very good Zlatan Ibrahimovic type player when he matures and improves his finess, but in the prem he will only prosper with Route 1 football (so perfect for Big Sam)

  27. Always one retard.....and today u are it :)

  28. Theres 1 quality that Wenger didnt add.. and if you look at all his past signings .. is the main quality he looks when he buys.

    And that is, the player fits into his system. AC simply dont fit our system. end of.

  29. He's a f**king carthorse, get real. If you want a lanky target man, sign Crouch, at least he has some skill with his feet.

    They are not Arsenal players, remember Lee Chapman.

    Carthorse, carthorse, carthorse.

  32. difference between rogers and wenger??? one is arrogant even without winning a title and the other is less arrogant and winning many titles along the way.

    what joy does it bring to us fans if we just look good?? hey, the other guy looked good and f***ed the prom queen. we looked good and go home like the dignified loser...

  33. Personally i'd have kept Carroll for at least this season, he can shake things up when we need to be a bit more physical or direct, but i can't see him as the 25-30 goal machine we need long term.

  35. You guys a deluded! Caroll is not even worth 20mill. Jaimie is right. Technically Carrol is average on the ball he is very slow in his movements when trying to link up play. In a Liverpool shirt he tried to drop deep and get involved in play, but did not to get in the box when ball was delivered enough for me which shows a lack of game intelligence. If you look at top strikers such Ba, Cisse, Augero even Fletcher they seem to have that knack of being able to read the game well enough to sniff out chances. Good thing is Carrol is young but for me BR was right to send him away and dispose of Adam.

  36. Erm, No! The New York World newspaper never had anything to do with the 'World Series' (and this is the only paper that could have sponsored the event). For more details see http://www.snopes.com/business/names/worldseries.asp
