AS claims: LFC star wants out of Anfield in 2013. Worried, or time to cash-in?

Despite recently signing an extended contract with the club, Reds striker Luis Suarez is reportedly still a target for La Liga side Atletico Madrid, who see the Uruguayan as a potential replacement for Colombia goal machine Radamel Falcao.

According to Spanish daily newspaper AS, Suarez's Agent Pere Guardiola - Brother of ex-barca Boss Pep Guardiola - has already held talks with Atletico General Manager Miguel Angel Gil Marin over the possibility of a potential deal. It is also claimed that Suarez wants the move, and is actively trying to push through a transfer for the end of the season. The report states:

"Luis Suarez is wanted by Atletico Madrid as a potential replacement for Radamel Falcao. Suarez's representative, the brother of Pepe Guardiola, has already spoken with Miguel Angel Gil Marin [Atletico's GM], and now it is the player who is trying to push the transfer through".

AS has strong ties to the Madrid clubs, and it has proven to be very reliable in the past when it comes to news about Real and Atletico. Having said that, given Suarez's new contract, and his repeated public statements about being happy at Liverpool, it seems unlikely that he's plotting a move away from Anfield.

It's clear that Suarez and Rodgers have a great deal of mutual respect. The Uruguayan has repeatedly expressed his support for the manager, and at the weekend, he reiterated:

"I still believe - and will continue to believe - that we have a lot of quality here and a manager who is giving everyone the confidence to believe in their opportunities. The results will definitely come".

You never know what's really going on though; if Liverpool finish outside the top four again this season, which to be realistic, is a strong possibility, will Suarez - at the age of 25-26 - be content to spend another year outside the Champions League, watching on as his countrymen play at the highest level?

I've made my views on Suarez clear many times over the last couple of years, and if Atletico - or some other club - come in with a ridiculous offer, then Liverpool should take it. Yes, Suarez scored a hat-trick at the weekend, but one game does not define an entire LFC career, and the fact remains that in the 20 months since Suarez arrived, his goal return and conversion rate has not been good enough.

Suarez is not as vital to LFC as fans like to think, and under Rodgers, the team and the *system* take precedence, not the individual, and over-reliance on one player is something that the Reds are in the process of eradicating, and it's long overdue.

  1. 60 games played and 27 goals suggests otherwise Jaimie, Im sure he will get plenty this season as he already has 6 in total.

  2. I dont believe anything until i see it on the official LFC site.

But....i agree with you, LS hasnt anywhere near the required conversion rate we need to climb back into the top 4. He's wasteful with his passing and often can go missing from time to time.

However, he's brilliant to watch and a joy to behold when he's on fire like this past weekend so it would be a shame to see him leave. But only for a huge offer that we cant turn down (providing it is reinvested in the squad and not into some yankee's bank account).

  3. 1 goal in every 2 games - nearly. That's very close to Owen's ratio of just better than 1 in 2 for us (118 goals in 216 appearances) and I think all LFC fans still consider Owen as a prolific scorer for us. Time will tell I suppose

  4. Here we go the manc is back on his sell Suarez bandwagon.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I agree Jamie. He is not vital but since we don't have many options at the moment we need him greatly. But if he wants to leave and we receive a £30M + offer then we should let him go. And if he has a good season then he would command a nice little sum!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Unfortunately, to make a system work properly, You`ll need skilled players to perform, Jamie. I think the latest games more than suggest this. It will, no matter what ratio of goalscoring used, be very difficult to replace Suarez`s importance to this team. He is unpredictable and therfore often frustrating for us fans, but in the long run I think it is definetively worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. absolute no chance of them reinvesting the money under fsg we are going to be a selling club there here for the cash and anyone who cannot see it needs there head testing lol

  8. Its sounds like pure speculation to me on behalf of Suarez's agent. I wouldn't read too much into it.

i think Suarez's importance to the club is not just about what he achieves on the pitch (although that is massive at the moment being our major goal threat), he is one of the few top class players we have a the club and losing a player of his caliber would reduce the profile of the club and put into question if we can attract and keep top players.

Liverpool as a club need to keep the top players at the club and bring in one or two more, selling one big name to bring in another will not help in improving the squad.

However like i said its all pure speculation and i fully expect Luis at the club next season.

  16. Luis Suarez season 11/12 stats for LFC: 39 matches 17 goals 11 assists.

    meaning 39 matches 28 goals/assists. (Haven't excluded sub appearances)

And this was his first FULL season with Liverpool going through Evra saga (banned). He will only improve going forward.

Already this season 8 matches 6 goals 3 assists; 8 matches 9 goals/assists. This guy is amazing, top notch. Your comment, "Suarez is not a vital part of LFC as fans would like to think" is absolutely inappropriate. He is a vital part of LFC, best player in the squad and LFC fans love him for a reason. BR is great but he haven't achieved anything yet to have more importance than Suarez. Chances of Suarez staying at LFC is more than BR staying at LFC before the end of season. Suarez is a passionate player and gives it everything he has. Can't understand how you don't see it..!!

  17. That didn't sound right to me so I did some research and, you're full of it.

    Sunderland:
    11/12 £24m spent (£5.5m net)
    12/13 £22m spent (£12.5m net)

    Liverpool:
    11/12 £57.4m spent (£36.3m net)
    12/13 £28.3m spent (£20.3 net)

If you're going to lie about the owners spending because you've got some imaginary axe to grind at least try to make it a slightly believable lie.

  19. He hasn't bothered to learn English, and he told Dalglish he would shake Evra's hand. His word is worthless.
His contract isn't worth the paper it's written on - all it guarantees is he gets paid more than he did last season.

    Get rid.

  21. its all hear say not to be belived at all. suarez is a great player and defenders can not cope with him. yes his goal scoring record has not been upto scratch but what he brings to the team by creating so many chances and now we have players who can create for him we will see him score alot more goals this year. we just need a top striker to put them in the back of the net. to get rid of him would be a mistake and at the end of the day man u look a poor side now and we out played them there team is old and they will struggle to fight for title we may be way off yet to compete for the lge but getting champion lge place is all what we should hope for this year as long as as players stay fit and we will be up there mark my words

  24. Please disregard this rubbish about FSG not investing, who is about to invest £150m to expand Anfield?. Who spent £113m last summer?, It was FSG but they got annoyed with Comolli and decided they wanted fringe players on big money off the wage bill. They want to see what BR can do before giving him big money, Is that unfair after last season???.

The academy is churning out top players and BR is a lucky man and he knows that, come January a striker will appear, at the right age and price im sure. Dempsey was not coming as FSG won't pay £7m for a 29 year-old with no sell-on value, It was that simple. The media have now decided that FSG are skint, this is risible.

Suarez goes nowhere end of story, how do you replace him?. They are not fools at all and know they need to add a top striker to him, you don't become £billionaires by being bad businessmen (H+G) apart. They know that Luis Suarez loves the loyalty we and the club showed him last season, he will show it to us in bucket loads.................no worries people!!!

  27. Suarez is a player i wouldn't let go at any price, Rodgers has said he wants to build the team around Suarez so i cant see him leaving any time soon... He has a contract til 2018 plus he's happy at the club and his performances so far in his career have been brilliant IMO, he's a game changer, always creating chances not just for himself but look at the assists he's had already this season. This is a bit of a joke article, in fairness Falcao is a real talent, but why would Liverpool want to sell Suarez to Athletico seriously and let Falcao join another club!!! Think about it... Falcao is the type of player Liverpool should be trying to get, a number 9 with unbelievable ability in the air and power, pace and a very good finish, surely he would fit the system Rodgers is introduding at Liverpool with Suarez and Sterling/Assaidi just behind the striker causing absolute mayhem for defences. We spent £35m on Andy Carroll who is worth less than £10m now at this stage, John Henry needs to trust Brendan Rodgers with more money in the next transfer window and get us a proper striker that will guarantee us 25+ goals a season. Henderson and Downing for me will not be at the club next season, they are not good enough, and Sterling and Suso have more potential at their age its only a matter of time before Downing and Henderson are left out of the squad week in week out, and rightly so.

  32. the problem is they are not going to take the club forward there here for a profit so imo let them make one big profit and sell the club because if they dont invest you can look forward to champions league football about as often as everton never mind the league they got the club for peanuts imo so they should put up or shut up i said about a month ago we will not see them at anfield much this season because they know that the honeymoons over

If we keep selling the best players while the other teams keep buying the best players around the world what chance do we have to break in that top four and back in CHL. You keep prasing BR at every opportunity. That's fine. The guy actually hasnt done much in football yet. Hasn't won anything yet. Has he.

  42. If player is not happy and wants to leave. sold to the highest bidder. no player is irreplaceable. even LS.

    ReplyDelete
  43. You are right that 27 goals in 60 games is certainly a good return but its also easy to forget he served an 8 game ban last season after a good start that may have affected his form afterwards.
Its early doors at this stage of the season but if I am not mistaken he was second on the top scorers chart with 5 goals as he is now going into October and the fated match against United on 15 October 2011.
He was never really the same player afterwards as the crisis embroiled him for the rest of the season scoring 6 more goals to finish on 11 league goals.
If you also remember prior to the start of last season he was playing all summer in Copa America hence had no proper break after Playing all Uruguay matches, fatigue may have caught as he got embroiled in a total 9 match ban.
This season he seems a bit sharper than the tail end of last season given he has scored 5 while being denied 3 stone wall penalties in successive games.
A prolific season will quickly change the current statistics significantly but it is funny that he is considered lethal for Uruguay national team with a strike rate 28 goals in 54 matches not too different from his Liverpool stats.
The fact that Atletico are usually in the Europa Cup rather than Champions League would also suggest that route being lateral progression not what a player aspiring for champions league football would go for.
Torres Left Atletico for LFC seeking progression as did Aguero for City and the same would surely be happening should Falcao Leave.
Suarez current massive wages would also be a problem for many suitors unless they are City, Chelsea, PSG, Barcelona, Real and some Russian clubs.

FSG take the gate receipts each week, sometimes twice a week, + TV rights, Advertising etc etc, how much have they cut the wage bill by,? how much have they taken in transfer Fees, just look at the way they hung BR out to dry last transfer day, and that tells you all you need to know about Loyalty to their manager. Even on "Being Liverpool" they didnt know the History about the Club, they got it wrong, they just have no class. If they dont BUCK UP, we will be back where we started b4 they arrived.
On the other nonsense, Suarez is going nowhere, who said he was, a Journalist, he he he,,, get a grip. We read this shit everyday of the week, those who listen to it, are very naive indeed. And JK, Suarez is staying, despite what you say, Get used to it, your campaign against certain players is getting so obvious, tell me a better goalscorer in our squad, he he he,, no you cannot, and you want him gone, just what are your aspirations for Lfc, ?

I'm afraid this post is wrong on many levels. Firstly, you don't prevent over reliance on a player by selling him, you strive to have other players of a similar class for him to play with.
Suarez is not vital?? Well you need to listen to the words of people who know differently i.e his team mates and manager who knows how much of a priority it was to get him to sign a new contract. He's a magical player, we are lucky to have him and watch him play for our team.
" One game does not define an entire Liverpool Career". What does this mean? Surely you are not suggesting the Norwich hat-trick defines his career?
Yes his conversion rate needs to be better but he is not just about goals and is also our most creative player. Besides 20 goals in his first 50 games in the prem is not bad, it's is on a par with Rush and I would say Rush did ok!!
Another point, what sort oft figure is" silly money" for Suarez?

    ReplyDelete
  60. One hat trick doesn't change things? Give it s rest. The season has just started and he's already got 5. Anyone who thinks he should be sold knows sweet f.a.

  61. great player im surprised we managed to sign him when we did. had torres not jumped ship we could of gone places sooner. they are the same caliber of players. suarez is better to watch on his day, who else takes on players like he does in the prem. would be a great loss if we lose him. 40 million wouldnt replace him. now were getting a bit more talent around him hes shining. if he were in the utd chelsea or city team he would probably be the top goal scorer in the league. so jk your talking out your backside ;0)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Based on the article and the possiblity Suarez might want to leave, then I agree with the idea that we should not force a player to stay, then yes of course we should cash in... Saying that, this could be the season that our striker helps us achieve a top four position, and it is still possible for LFC to achieve CL football. He could help us win the Europa cup... Then I'd suggest Suarez would be less inclinded to want to leave. The owners are business based and yes it is true they are not in this just for the love of LFC, but saying that they are an established business model who understand growth is vital to success, so I feel we are in safe hands, especially considering the clubs that could go under over the next five years due the economic chaos we are all feeling and the silly money some clubs are throwing around.

Some people commented about our bad owners... The owners want steady growth on and off the pitch, so far they have contributed more then the results on the pitch, some of the deals they have done to grow the revenue over the coming years have been top draw, on the pitch we are starting to see positives, we have been playing good football and seeing the youngsters has given us all some unexpected confidence, so are they bad owners, for me no... Personally, I'm really looking forward to our future (for a change), and like every LFC fan, we will feel a lot better when we start to climb the table and start a run of wins :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. why would Suarez leave Liverpool for a smaller club anyway+ its well documented fact that atletico Madrid are having some economical difficulties so they would use falcao money to pay off debts not buy a expensive striker like Suarez who just sign a new contract the other day meaning his cost would be about 30 something million which is money that atletico don't have. Bullshit Article

They are backing us what more do we need? You can't build a team over night? An hold on they didn't want to splash out on a 29 year old? No sell on value at all.,. Would give us one good season... We are trying to build something for now and the future. Sorry but you're asking to much off owners. You can't splash loads of ££££ because it would put are furture in a worrying place. If they keep putting money in then it's all good. They will give another amount of money to Rodgers in January to add more players into are squad.

    ReplyDelete
  69. It's another article by Jamie based on myth, intending to stimulate debate and hits. Suarez isn't going anywhere soon, otherwise he wouldn't have dined a new contract.

These are exciting times, the lack of investment in the transfer window may well pay dividends giving the young players an opportunity to shine like the mcmanaman, redknapp and fowler generation.

If they prove their worth, which is looking probable, then any investment in jan / summer can be spent on real quality rather than having to bolster the squad.

I think it's time to have a little faith, Rodgers is trying to implement the type of football we all crave. This transition doesn't happen overnight, we may not finish in the top 4-6 this year, but we will see improvement.

Give the youth and management time to grow together and success will come.

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong but i'd say another 4 1st team squad members left after that to and we only signed 5 players. This leaves 4 players who have left the club and have not been replaced. There wages alone must be saving millions so i can't really see how the net spend is so high.
I would love to know how much we have saved in wages now all these players have gone.

  74. Afraid to say JK, although I agree with many of ur opinions and passion for lfc i do find this one a bit strange mate.
His goals and assists despite a very troubled start off the pitch together with a massive suspension and bad press makes him IMO one of the best in the league and a player that sadly we would have no chance of signing if we didn't already have him. He also brings creativity and excitement that we haven't seen for a while.
Unfortunately if we don't bring in/develop others like him, one of the 'big clubs' will come in for him and we won't have a choice. If that happens it would need to be Torres money for him to go but I wouldn't blame him.

That is unless BR is 'all he's cracked up to be' and we get back to being one of the big clubs again, so far I'm very excited, just hope it continues!!!!

There's loads of people in here that disagree with you JK but they still keep reading and commenting, so at least you writing works!! = )
    Keep it up.

  75. He missed a blatant chance against Norwich, and as the replays were being shown for that miss, he scored with the outside of his foot. I was telling my pops that this guy is just pure magic. He will score goals out of nothing, and every one that is close to LS knows what a magical player he is. Even Stevie G calls him a magician. This guy will continue to take rabbits out of the hat, and its crucial that Liverpool hold on to this guy. After losing such a big player like Torres, he came in and lifted that gloom. People say he is no finisher, but he is still top class, and has many attributes. Rodgers can even stick him in center mid and he will still run the show. That's how good he is.

  76. Why aren't you LUIS SUAREZ' biggest fan LOCO CHICA?

    ReplyDelete
  77. To be fair (and tongue-in-cheek), I always take what Stevie says with a pinch of salt, considering his over-the-top title predictions for us over the years as well as, of course, the anything-Messi-can-do,-Joe-Cole-can do,-if-not-better comment ;)

  78. The key word is IF. And that goes to any player in the squad.

  79. To be realistic, if I were being abused by everyone in England apart from LFC fans, and a decent club in a country who's native tongue is my own, I would be pushing for the move. From LFCs standpoint, it would hurt - for a while until we get a proven goal scorer to replace his goals, but he does have his faults on the pitch as well - doesn't pass when in dangerous positions, and that deters his teammates from making runs into those dangerous positions. He's unpredictable, which is great for your opponents but not so great If your own team has no idea what your going to do next. He's a bit of a one man team, which is not what BR wants to build. For now - yes we need him and his goals, because there are no experienced players creating anything right now. But he is not the future of LFC, so if 30m+ comes in AND BR can reinvest, take it.

  80. I just searched the As website for Suarez, Luis Suarez and Liverpool and I did not find the article.

    ReplyDelete
  81. If 35 million was tabled who would you replace him with?
We have no CL so do you really think we could get anyone better than SUAREZ.Who is better or on the same level that's available?
We've already been stung with the take the money approach with FERNANDO TORRES and we bought a big expensive ponytail from NEWCASTLE.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Haha! U make that up?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Charlie, that would only happen provided there is another moronic 'Dalglish" who is on the market for British-made products.

  85. That's cause he's not in any position to make big comments. You know more than Stevie . Is that why you don't take him seriously? I take it you have captoned your club and country? Thought so!

  86. Jaimie,

Your wrong and I'll explain why ...it's one thing to suggest that no player is bigger than the club.
It's another to suggest selling him without offering his replacements.
Who would you Jaimie suggest that we replace Suarez with ?

Suarez has stated on numerous occasions that he's happy at Liverpool.
When and if he or his wife starts to become unsettled a la Mascherano I'll take it more seriously.

Brendan who has been very clear with who he wants and doesn't want has made it clear that he doesn't want to sell his best players.

There is no evidence from FSG that they will sell there best players, given that they got rid of Spearing,Carroll,Adam to name but a few.

The lack of credibility to your article is not supported anywhere else in any credible media outlet.

Anyone who attends games KNOWS when a player is not happy.
You only have to look at Torres body language 6 weeks before he left to KNOW he was not happy.

Anyone watching Suarez at Norwich and his delight at the hatrick and his interactions with his team mates tells me this article is unfounded.

You may feel compelled to create articles in order to keep your site fresh and interesting.
    This article is poor

  87. 'tongue-in-cheek', I repeat 'tongue-in-cheek', capiche.

No, I have not 'captoned...club and country' but I do know, like a lot of people do, when not to take things/comment seriously, especially when a comment clearly says 'tongue-in-cheek'. Bless.

  88. please jamie please for the love of football please stop writing articles on liverpool and football because trust me mate you have no idea about football. get a proper job and sort out your life mate and leave us alone. Thanks.

  89. "his repeated public statements about being happy at Liverpool."

Reading this, another former Liverpool player comes to mind.
Bye the way, he is not at Liverpool anymore.
Left in a hurry, never looking back.
    He's blue today though.

  90. 'Suarez is not as vital to Liverpool as fans like to think', not so sure about this Jaimie, who else will score the goals? If we had bought a decent striker maybe I could agree. We'll see on Thursday if we'll miss him or not as I think he'll be rested so it's up to the other's to chip in with goals.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Bless. One disagreement in another thread means you have to follow me to another thread and leave a childish & stupid comment that inc. 'loco chica'? Nice(!) That comment says more about you and your petty immaturity, than it does about me. Well done(!)

  92. On behalf of Suarez's agent? More like on behalf of the Spanish publication.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Firstly, it would be nice if you could spell properly, secondly, Suarez and Gerrard are only two of our world class players, Lucas is one of them, Reina is up there as well, plus we have potential world class players, players with the talent to become world class that are coming through the ranks

    ReplyDelete
  94. The 150mil pounds which will boost ticket revenue and give us more money to spend on transfers and wages. What a lot of "fans" won't account for is securing many of our top senior players to new contracts, which is also investing in the club. These people who say that FSG want to make money, of course they do, they are business owners of a sporting institution, the more successful we are, the more successful they are, which means that to make us successful, they need to do exactly what they are doing and they is investing money, but they also need to do it exactly the way they are doing it, which is investing money smartly.

  95. This is a bold claim, but as far as close control goes, Suarez is on a par with Messi, the way he can make space out of nothing, the reason he has so many chances is because he can create something from nothing due to his turns and nutmegs and all of that, classic example is his second against Norwich, the way he did a full 180 like that is world class. And yes, you may say that it was only against Norwich, but he does this to all teams

    ReplyDelete
  96. What a stupid comment to make about BR not winning anything yet, and yes he did win something, he won promotion with Swansea, which was no mean feat

    ReplyDelete
  97. @John Carr

Fletcher cost £12m, Johnson £10m, their other signings were free.

I realise maths is hard but come on man, this particular sum isn't that difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Agreed, the game against Norwich was far more than just the 3 goals, he set up Sahin, he nearly set up Gerrard with an amazing pass over the top, he had a clearcut penalty, every time he got the ball, he looked dangerous, as he has this season so far.

    ReplyDelete
  99. But yet that comment was aired and it had an obscenity in it :)

  100. They have been replaced by the young players coming up through the ranks

  101. cant believe you guys actually buy into Jamie's relentless anti Suarez dribble. this whole article is solely contrived by Jamie to slate him. and you actually call yourself an LFC fan, yeah right..

Gaz, you're either a tad naive or just so full of hot air.

It's only a matter of months now before the likes of Suarez, Gerrard, Lucas and Reina all leave.

As for the upcoming "talent" we have - Oh Lord! The likes of Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, and even Newcastle are all shaking in their boots!

  105. Found it. Thank you. Hard to notice that it was on the word AS.

Read the article. It seems like a passing comment by an unidentified person. I wouldn't put much stock on it.

  106. I posted last night asking JK if he had made it up and ,what a surprise,he's removed my post. Answers my question, I think. Just another anti-LS rant from the man who thinks we should be signing Darren 'WTF' Bent. King Luis, red for life. Get a grip J.

  109. Suarez's miss on Saturday followed by his quality nutmeg and conversion demonstrated everything in 10 seconds that we already know about the lad. Scorer of great goals more than a great goal scorer. He has 27 goals for us but should have closer to 40.

Fantastic on the eye and as good a player I have ever seen at Liverpool or anywhere else in the prem but I doubt he has 25-30 goals in him over the course of a season. Hope I'm wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Go and get a proper job! I think you are in the pay of Manchester Untied (sic). It seems you delight in spreading rumours to unsettle Liverpool fans. Your modus operandi is to pick on the Reds star performers and say something derogratory about them to harvest maximum response. You posted against Rafa Benitez ad nauseum, Kenny Dalglish, Luis Suarez during the Evra saga, Andy Carroll, Steven Gerrard et al.

For goodness sake go and jump in the Mersey and give our heads peace.

Please tell us who you worked for and what age you are because I find your analyses very infantile and lacking in any real content.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Sterling, Suso, Shelvey are three players who have the talent to be world class, Allen is showing world class form, although Reina isn't showing world class form, that doesn't mean he isn't world class, Agger is another player who is world class and showed that at the Euros, Lucas is also a world class defensive midfielder. This isn't hot air or naive, this is intelligent observations.
