£2m epic fail: Suso hails exciting 17-goal attacker ignored by LFC. Mistake?

Last season, despite having £80m+ worth of attacking 'talent' on the field in most games, Liverpool struggled to score goals regularly, and this had a catastrophic impact on the club's league season. Brendan Rodgers bought fairly well in the summer transfer window, but he could've signed Swansea attacking midfielder Michu for a paltry £2m, but for some inexplicable reason, he decided against it. Well, the 26-year old has been a revelation at Swansea, and Reds starlet Suso has highlighted the Spaniard as a major threat to Liverpool's hopes of progressing in the Capital One Cup.

In an interview with the official Liverpool FC website today, Suso said Chico Flores and Michu were 'doing really well' at the Liberty Stadium, and he reserved special praise for the the former Rayo Vallecano player. He said:

"[He is] doing really well. Rayo Vallecano are not a big team in Spain, but it doesn't matter what team you're at - if you're a good player, you're always going to show people you have the capacity to be at a good club or play in the best league, which is the Premier League. Being honest, I am not surprised - he is a good player and can score a lot of goals."

Liverpool were repeatedly linked with a move for Michu (who grabbed 17 goals and 3 assists for Rayo Vallecano last season) over the last year, and a few months before signing for Swansea, he told Reporters:

"If a good offer arrives for Rayo and me I will leave. Rayo are suffering from money problems and it is normal to analyse things in these circumstances, but personally I still do not have an offer on the table."

So...What happened? Predictably, Liverpool failed to act, and Michael Laudrup ghosted in and signed Michu for a ridiculously cheap £2m (!). To add insult to injury, the Spaniard has taken to the Premier League like a fish to water, grabbing seven goals and one assist in his first ten games.

Additionally, Michu already has more league goals/assists than Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing - combined cost £40m - managed for the Whole of last season.

Despite Michu's goal-threat, Suso is convinced the Reds have what it takes to win the game:

"We are Liverpool and we don't need to care about what other teams do; we need to go out onto the pitch and show what we can do"|.

'We are Liverpool' - I love this attitude :-)

Let's just hope Michu doesn't make Rodgers regret the decision not to sign him...

  1. I was perplexed that we did not go for him, he done really well considering his team was struggling. For 2M and low wages it would not have been a gamble.

Plus Suso's attitude is very good, keep it up and keep it humble.

  2. pretty sure you've written about this earlier in the season...

  3. Suso's comment is new, even if JK's criticism of the failure to get Michu has been said before.

  4. Yes, I have. When the transfer window closed I wrote about missing out on Michu. Suso has mentioned him today, so I've added a bit of background/context.

Is that okay with you, or should I ask for permission next time? :-)

  9. It's always down to lazy scouting, we know over the years we have been poor on that front. Now we really are scouting players properly, bargains are out there, just look at the quality we see in Portugal, Holland and Greece, somebody scouts them!!!!

  10. Suso will be a star when he gets to play in his best position, which is behind the striker.

Hopefully he gets the chance to play there tonight with Henderson and Shelvey in the middle.

  11. This is complete fabrication. Liverpool, Rogers and co. didn't know Michu or Chico existed let alone scout them or contemplate a bids so I do not know where this bul***t story has come from.

  12. That would have meant dropping, Gerrard/Shelvey. He wasnt looking for that sort of player which is why he went for Allen.

Would have been a different story if he was a CF.

  13. He'll be a star with time and consistency, regardless of position, imo. I don't think he is ready to be a regular, despite his talent, in any position in the first XI. Very hard for a playmaker or a attacking midfielder of his style in PL to stamp his presence consistently at his age. Can't think of many young players of his type that manage it quickly in PL. Which is no criticism of him, it is simply par for the course for most young players of his type. Even Silva still disappears in games.

  14. But he was interested in Sigurdsson who plays in the same role.

  15. Could've signed Michu instead of Sahin. I would've taken that to be honest, especially since the Spaniard scores much more regularly, and LFC will probably get stung for some inflated transfer fee at the end Sahin's loan (if he stays, that is)

  16. Lets face it, this is a huge oversight. rodgers fancies himself as a bargain hunter and likes spanish players but he missed this one.
id rather have michu than fabio B anyday.

  17. Only because he had sucsess with him at Swansea. I doubt he would have made the same impact for us

  18. That is irrelevant in this context. You said he isn't interested in that sort of player, as he had Stevie and Shelvey. Yet he went for Sigurdsson, who plays in the same position as Michu, Gerrard and Shelvey.

  19. He is not as great as people think he is. Ok, he had good start, scoring goals but wait for this season to complete. He is just above average to be honest. No big clubs wanted him and so he went to Swansea. Even after scoring so many goals he is still not making regular headlines and still no club really interested. Remember Charlie Adam, anyone? Prolific Blackpool Midfielder? You see when you are above average player playing with average or below average players...you tend to score more goals as you are the 'man' in the team. If LFC buys him, he is doomed.

  20. Maybe there was an agreement that LFC can't touch any targets Swansea were looking at when they got Rodgers.

  21. chirag, there is a difference between, charlie adam had 10 penalties out of his 12 goals, while michu has scored most of his goals by shear brilliance of his positioning and technical ability

  22. This is not possible since rodgers is a managerial genius ... rodgers is a god and can do no wrong.. so if we didn't sign him it means he is mediocre crap! (HUGE sarcasm as rodgers is actually a very mediocre manager who the lemmings continue to praise when he has done NOTHING in his career to deserve a managerial position with a club like Liverpool)

  23. Rogers didn't do much for the swans, the only thing he really did was bring in Sinclair and (for a short time) Borini, who were both absolute class in the NPC, but both are only ok in the BPL. As for Michu, his positioning and finishing are his best attributes, I'd say Chirag has isn't to far off when he says Michu is just above average, but he is dead wrong when it comes to the rest of the Swansea teams being average or below. Ki is just as good as Allen, if not better. Dyer, Routledge and Pablo are all quality wingers. Williams and Chico might not be as good as Agger but are both good centre halfs. Vorm is one of the best Keepers in the BPL.

  26. Suso is a 'starlet'? Dear God, what on earth do you think of real top men like Messi, Ronaldo, Iniesta etc? Suso is totally unknown outside Anfield and deservedly so. Actually, he's probably pretty unknown even inside Anfield. Wouldn't it be better to wait till he's scored a few goals before even mentioning his name?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Who's to say Michu would have been a success here and scored any goals here?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Or maybe, get this, he wasn't a target of Rodgers in the first place

  29. What an absolutely idiotic posting. The more I read your postings, the more convinced I am that you are an Everton or Man Utd supporter
