After the abject failure to sign a striker on Friday, speculation is rife today that Liverpool are interested in bringing in former Chelsea goalscorer Didier Drogba as emergency striker cover. It's an interesting idea, but it appears that the Ivorian has no interest in coming to Anfield.
In his post-Arsenal press conference yesterday, Rodgers was asked whether he would consider Owen or Drogba on short-term deals, and he replied:
"I can't say no. Any player I believe can improve the squad, I will look at"
However, according to The Guardian today:
"Sources close to the player last night suggested that a move back to the Premier League was not viable and that Drogba would begin the Chinese league season in November".
Drogba recently signed a lucrative contract with Shanghai Shenua, but reports over the last week claimed that his contract had been terminated due to financial issues.
Drogba's management company refuted that contention though, with a spokeswoman for the Sports PR Company, which represents Drogba in the UK , calling the news 'nonsense'.
Drogba to Liverpool? It's certainly an enticing proposition, but his wages would almost definitely be prohibitive, and at this stage of his career, the Ivorian is clearly looking for a big, fat retirement contract, and it seems unlikely he's take a massive wage cut to scrap it out with Liverpool in the Premier League.
Additionally, I'm not sure Drogba's blatantplay-acting theatricality on the field is consistent with LFC's values. Yes, the club is desperate for strikers but not for someone who falls over every time the wind blows.

Agreed! We can't dream too much!
ReplyDeleteDrogba is on some ridiculous wages in China.
Why on earth would FSG pay that kind of money to Drogba when they could not cough up £3 million extra for buying Dempsey ?
what about Suarez's theatricality?
ReplyDeleteWhy would you want drogba who falls over when the wind blows, when you have Suarez who falls over from fresh air
ReplyDeletenot that king kenny was ever prone to going over eh eh
ReplyDeleteMy world Jamie, u seriously would like to see drogba at liverpool, c'mon jus where does drogba style of play fit into tiki taka, this is one thing i jus dont get about the people u would like to see at liver, u are one of the people that wanted to see carroll at liver, plus last season u also talked about seeing demb ba from newcstle coming to liver but jus how do these players style fit into liver?????/ granted they are all good players but before we start saying they should come shouldnt we discern if they will be a success with the type of style we want to play, and as much as u may not want to hear this drogba would be more suited to playing under rafa than rogers.......... something to ponder
ReplyDeleteYes, you're right, which is why I've highlighted in many times.
ReplyDeleteFresh air can be deadly though; it's a well known scientific fact that fresh air can achieve up to 1000 lbs of stopping force. Wind, on the other hand, has no real power.
ReplyDeleteMizzy - I think I've argued that I don't want Drogba at Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteplus what lfc values are you talking bout????? play acting comes down to however if managing u, u see this at utd because thats what fergie wants (stam pointed it out and no sooner was let go, ashely never used to dive but as soon as he joined utd, he lost his balance) true Lfc values used to be us playing good soccer, bossing european gaints wining major cups, where has that gone???? those were ourr values and correctly me if am wrong but the last i saw us doing this was when Rafa was around......something to ponder
ReplyDeleteI challenge you to find one shred of persuasive evidence to suggest that Dalglish was 'prone to going over'. You use video footage, match reports, fan accounts, basically anything available on the net. Find one pundit who played for/against Dalglish who every mentioned that he went over easily. I'm waiting :-)
ReplyDeleteSeems like sour grapes to me, I support Liverpool but no one can question the quality of Drogba....well one time Bentitez did, before the CL when he destroyed us. I'm a great Benitez fan too.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair Jaimie has made it quite clear on more than one occasion how he feels about Suarez :P
ReplyDeleteLove it when Rodgers says had he known about not being able to sign he would not let Carroll go.
ReplyDeleteThis is total BS. Rodger boy did everything in his power to push Carroll out the door, then starts looking for strikers. It is the first rule that make sure you have cover before letting the other one go.
Borini has been very poor in general and Suarez is a wizard but his finishing is woeful (great goal on Thursday though). Even Dalglish had Suarez signed a couple of hours before he let Torres go so for a couple of hours he had both these in his team and could have pulled the plug on Torres's transfer (although I'm glad he went since his heart was not in Liverpool). Here we see Carroll wanted to stay and was pushed, Dempsey wanted to come but Fulham prevented his transfer to Liverpool so bad blood there it seems and as for Sturridege, the lad did not want to come in the first place.
Rodgers is out of his depth at Liverpool and the Fenway group have no clue about football
he also says that his bosses have been straight with him all along. meaning he knew no striker would be coming. another question is why did he put in an option to bring back carol in 6 months?
ReplyDeletei rest my case.
maybe im missing something here but didnt mr henry say he is not looking at short term fixes, my understanding of this removes drogba and owen or am i the only one that read it that way.
ReplyDeleteoh and jamie u love writing and parroting words lol. why didnt you just make one article drogba or owen. too much work for nothing lol
ReplyDeleteDrogba's antics would go hand in hand with Suarez's
ReplyDeleteNICOLAS ANELKA ..
ReplyDeleteam not surprise to see that we loose out in bringing in players and why should Rodgers and who ever that is concern about signing players should wait untill 3,2,1 hrs closing hours of transfer market before they go after Dempsey or any other player and the most annoying part is allowing Andy Carroll left a player who have just picking up form, why did'nt wait till date hours of transfer before he goes for SAHIN,ALLEN,BORINI,all these shows incapabilty of Rodgers for the post of Lfc manager please there is no need for panicking for the wast is about to come bye to golden era and welcome to more season of failure under Brenden Rodgers and his crew but am sad for the good players we have such Luis Suarez, Gerrard ,Sahin, and the rest of the players.
ReplyDeleteThis is the sweetener.....we've had to swallow a bitter pill, so what does our PR machine decide to do.....?
ReplyDeleteIts dire. Conceding two goals a game is relegation stuff. Lack of depth and a goalkeeper prone to so many errors at critcal stages is another. The strike force has been an issue for over 5 years now. The owners, hobbie approach to the club will result in a average club distant from former glory evenings. Time for the fans to walk out now rather than later
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure you can call out Didier's play acting and not do likewise for Suarez. That guy is an embarrassment.
ReplyDeleteAnelka anyone? Id love to have him.
ReplyDeleteTep, would abs. love to see him. Has attitude problems but then again so does Balotelli
ReplyDeleteDrogba story's a non runner. Not sure who's in control at Anfield and our new system is doomed to failure, should stick to four in the middle and get Suarez and Borini closer together.
ReplyDeleteHow could drogba score as many goals as he has if he fall over every time the wind blows.Fuckin retarded author
ReplyDeletefuck you jamie you lame cunt :)
ReplyDeleteWhat Liverpool values???? Losing?????
ReplyDeleteif we sign Drogba it stinks of hypocrisy ....rogers didn't fancy carroll as he wanted to play pass and go ...if he signs drogba or says he wants him ( he wont come anyway ) ill lose all respect for the guy and his so called wanting to plat tika tak
ReplyDeleteYep, i picked up on that, very selective thinking there....
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to "theatrics" Suarez is right up there with the best of them. Pot calling the kettle black methinks.
just wont happen, great for the tabloids though. they just cant wait for drogba to now have to come out and say i would never play for liverpool, and why would owen want to come for the abuse?? get pongolle back !!!
ReplyDeleteDid you just say Liverpool play 'tiki taka'? Are you drunk or just incredibly retarded?
ReplyDeleteLiverpool would cream in their collective pants to have Drogba.
ReplyDeleteRight. And it's not like I've criticised Suarez for the very same thing, is it?! I am his biggest critic.

sinama-pongolle and afonso alves surely would be viable options, and both still have the legs for it as alves is the oldest of the two at 31. i really hope if we dont get anelka and/or drogba (who seem unlikely), we go for pongolle and alves. also i really want yesil to get a chance in europe at least. his scoring record is amazing at youth levels for both club and country.
ReplyDeleteFair enough, but do you then think we should have sold him in this window or loaned him out? personally i think we should have of....in the same way i wouldn't want Drogba here...i don't want Suarez. Let alone the fact that he has been grossly under performing..........yet we get rid of Carroll instead...a player who at least didn't drag the Club through the mud and didn't get Kenny wearing his T shirt in defence of him....Kenny was guilty of naivete, Suarez was guilty of a lot more than that IMO....
ReplyDeleteYet he's still at the Club...
pongolle is an editores dream if he misses pong stinks and he scores ponnn goaaal
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with Suarez being sold/loaned as long as we have a good replacement. Before he was signed, I wrote an article.exhorting the club not to sign him. Predictably, I got slammed by fans for doing so, but I stand by what I wrote atthe time.

Remove Suraz and put Drogba and Owen...LFS would be in champions season for sure....
ReplyDeletedrogba is a chelsea legend if he is comin bak to england it is chelsea he aint rvp
ReplyDelete#cfc4lifeeee
We wont sign anyone. You heard it here first. More bullshine from the owners. Next we'll be getting leaks about new stadiums.etc.etc........Christ i thought h&g were bad. Least they took a good 4 seasons to start screwing us. This lot have been in just under 2 and are already bleeding the club dry.
ReplyDeleteAnyone pick up on the comments about how they dont want us to a mid table club with quick fixes. Where do they want us to then???? The bottom??? It certainly isnt going to be the top.
ReplyDeleteLikewise i also expressed my concerns at the time, so im sure you can understand my utter frustration with the Club and those people running it....the fact remains though that you were much more active in your pursuit of outing Carroll than you were Suarez in the lead up to the window and during it....
ReplyDeleteI think thats where we differ....seeing Suarez and Reina unchallenged for their place in the team knowing that others have been fcuked off doesn't sit well with me at all.
Superman, Thor or even settle for Miss Piggy over Borini - another flop who cant find the net!!
ReplyDeleteit is too early to be criticising either a player or the club, why do we want to lack faith in the manager[BR] too early like that a person we have all been praising b4 arsenal game, pls stop all that!!!,lfc will surely get it right,as Rome was not built in a day.....
ReplyDeleteWell,"we" are criticising Gerrard....so i guess when in Rome...
ReplyDeleteDrogba would never join scum such as livepool as he wants to be successful. Maybe if all your fans didn't sound like something of of the history channel then maybe but that clearly isn't the case. Drogba likes fans of class not a pity party whose heart beat is souly beating to the carling cup that you won. It's the cup for reserve players to have a stat on ESPN. Long live Chelsea FC.
ReplyDeletescum? from chelsea fans now that is rich your club and fans should have the word on your badge
ReplyDeleteNew manager, new direction, unless you can mind read, you,re not in a position to pass judgement just yet. Long term means long term.. Patience is needed, and supporters need to support, not bitch constantly. The young players will be nurtured , we have an abundance of talent to come through..
ReplyDelete08033092609 drogba's blood is blue ,he is AfricanGift to Chelsea of England and so cannot accept offers from Liverpool
