VIDEO: Sahin & Suso's brilliance, plus Rodgers and Barnes on LFC's performance...

Liverpool's youngsters put in an excellent performance tonight to beat West Brom 2-1 in the Carling Cup game at the Hawthorns.

Samed Yesil made his senior debut for the club, Oussama Assaidi got another game under his belt, and with 10 minutes to go, Jerome Sinclair become Liverpool's youngest ever player (16 years old and 6 days) after coming on to replace Dani Pacheco.

The game was a joy to watch, mainly due to the fearless performances of the younger players in the team, particularly Yesil, Assaidi, Pacheco and Wisdom, all of whom put in very effective performance.

Liverpool legend John Barnes said was very pleased with the performance. He told LFC TV:

"I thought Liverpool were excellent. They could've folded after going down 1-0, but they played with composure and tempo, and Assaidi and Yesil were excellent all night. In the final third, they looked very sharp."

After the game, Brendan Rodgers revealed his delight at his team's performance. He enthused:

"Tonight was fantastic. It's great to see the kids play with confidence, and that slight football arrogance out there was great, especially for the second goal.

"Young players are going to get a chance, and if they have the talent then they'll get in irrespective of age. Our future is very bright, and the style and definition of our play is improving".

Liverpool have been drawn against Swansea in the fourth round. You couldn't make it up (!)

1-0: Tamas

1-1: Sahin

2-1: Sahin

  1. Link-up play for the winning goal...magical!

  2. I wanted WBA to score an equalizer only to watch 30 mins more of these Kids. They are fantastic, just can't get enough. Amazing match, Pachecho, Assaidi, Sahin, Wisdom, Coates, Jack Robinson....amazing. Downing should retire now itself though.

  3. Whers the link for the final goal though?

  4. Yes, it was refreshing to actually see a cross find a Liverpool player for once.

  5. These kids are fantastic nothing else to say.
And I just can't believe how anyone could have possibly spent £20M on Stewart Downing. He's easily the worst football player I've ever seen.

  6. Brillant to watch. Downing? Please go away:( assaidi is amazing to watch bargain at 3 million. He should play upfront with Suarez an sterling.... Would be fanstatic to watch.

  7. great performance for large parts of the game, assaidi looked really classy at times, gave their right back a torrid time..on the other side, downing offered zilch once again..wtf like! team is definitely playing some good football, still look vulnerable on the counter-attack though

  8. I think Yesil has an eye for a goal and a good finishing but lacks in strength and shouldn't give ball away easily. Didn't see any point of giving a Debut to Sinclair though, looks very raw. His off the ball positioning and strength very weak. Must improve/play more U21 before playing senior game again. Coates should replace Skrtel, Assaidi should replace Borini...soon.

  9. What do you guys thought of Coates?? I think we have Carragher right there!

  10. Sahin was too good today. I also think Brad Jones apart from the first goal howler was pretty decent overall.

  11. And Coates is getting better and better each game

  12. Our young players are a joy to watch. They play football exactly as instructed by Rodgers and are much more penetrating than our first team. It's nice to finally have that extra player or two in the box to grab a goal. Downing should look at Assaidi to see how we all wish he plays like. Pacheco gave much improved performance as well, creating spaces and chances for himself. And Suso... that guy is class.

  13. Wow, no doom and gloom for once. Hate to say this but these bunch of kids could be just as good as Fergies crop from the 90's. Well done lads!

  14. not easy for any team to go to the hawthorns and get a result, the kids have done us proud.I bet steve clarke wishes he had got kenny to give them a go,each one of them put 200% more effort than downing,he has to go!

  15. Agreed. The only thing I wished Jones did more was not hoof it every time up the field. At around 70mins, Rodgers whistled at him and told him to pass it as well. However, as a shot blocker, Jones is more convincing than Reina as of late. He marked the near post well to protect our lead at the end. Contrastingly, Reina concedes a lot of goals like that.

  16. Downing can only hope of playing like assaidi...OA is a natural dribbler while Downing isn't...u cant expect Downing to play like someone else..everyone has their own playstyle...sadly Downing's sucks...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah and he will be even better than Carragher, as he will be a real threat from set-pieces unlike Jamie. ;)

  18. Sahin and Assaidi will give the 1st team more of a cutting edge now they are getting matchfit. It was a delight to finally see Pacheco put in a very fine shift for the reds. He worked hard, always available to receive the ball and in the 2nd half was one of the key figures in our attacking play. This result/ performance could the kick start that Rodgers needs.

  19. BUZZIN!!! i dont wanna jump on the Downing bashing band-wagon, but 20mill? Assaidi 3mill? crazy, but he does try hard he's just not that talented, Sahin is immense i think gerrard/sahin central mid V Norwich allen further up untill Shelvey gets back and then Brendan can figure out what then...STILL BUZZIN YNWA

  20. Downing should be tried as a left back, as his crossing is quite good and he has pace too, which is important for attacking as well as defending.

If he can't make a difference there just sell him !!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Assaidi was excellent and with him and Sterling in the team Liverpool can now actually play with wingers who can trouble the fullbacks.
Sahin too was great and scored good goals, also his work rate was excellent.
Great to see Pacheco doing well in the second half and Suso again showed his quality by playing his role in the second goal, he is exactly the kind of player Liverpool need who can play that final pass.
Coates getting better with every game and he was rock solid.
Yesil too impressed with his movement.
Maybe our youngsters can inspire our first team with this performance.

  22. this team is better than our senior team, bar suarez and maybe allen

  23. Well done lads. Pleased for Sahin to get a performance like that under his belt. Would love to see Lucas-Allen and Sahin in the same team sometime this season. Love the confidence from the younger players. Early days but great initial impressions. Glad to see Jones getting some game time, he has had a torrid time personally in recent past but also the lad has come into training in the summer 3/4 weeks earlier than scheduled so he is putting the effort in, so he deserves some game time, especially with Reina being so below par for what seems like eternity now.

  24. Quality at last, Rodgers is a great manager and with time we will be great again but will need time,so please please Liverpool fans give him time ,on the weekend on the radio I heard a fan call for him to be sacked and bring back Benitez what a muppet this is not what we need ,we need a young hungry manager who is not afraid to play the youngsters and mould a team for years to come and we will love this as Liverpool fans, well done Rodgers and the boys tonight

  25. Personally i thought Pacheco was man of the match and i was gutted he went off instead of Downing. Gonna give Hendo another big thumbs up too. So proud to be a red tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ahh, good times ahead. It's so damn refreshing to see all these great young players get a chance. Now I can't wait to see Jordon Ibe get in as well.

  27. I think Downing can be a good dribbler, though the Gareth Bale type of dribbler, one who relies on pace. Downing has a lot of pace but unfortunately, he rarely uses it. What pisses me off most is that he is afraid to penetrate the box, opting for useless, which while technically good, qualitatively are not because nobody would be in the box or only one player surrounded by 4 opponents. I don't know if changing his style of play can be successful, but we should try as we have nothing to lose.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree that at times, especially in the beginning, he seemed raw, but within minutes, his confidence started growing. There was a moment near the end of the match where he positioned himself really well and was eagerly awaiting a through ball which would have sent him alone versus the goaler. Unfortunately, the other LFC player opted to pass backwards. I don't follow a lot of youth football, but it seems to me as if most players are not as tactically aware as the older players. This was apparent when he tried to go past a West Brom defender too easily and was dispossessed. It looked like he fully expected to go through as usual. However, as I pointed out, after that incident, it seemed like he was eager for another chance and made himself available to receive the ball by cleverly positioning himself really well for a counter-attack.

  29. I made a comment a while about how Liverpool never get players in the box to receive crosses. They finally read my comment!

  30. Just got up its 05:00 here in Chiang Mai . What a result.
Over the moon. Plz , Plz , 3pts at Norwich . And our

    rerun on LFC.tv.

  32. Have a look back at the replay of the 2nd goal and watch out for two things. First watch Suso's head once he has played the pass to Aiassidi and then watch him look up as he picks up the ball and embarks on the run. Only the best have pictures in there brain like that. This lad can be anything he wants to. Truly Amazing!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. It was psychological, it tells every player at LFC, age, rank, experience do not matter if they can perform in a game, and by the way the youngsters are performing, it is getting home to them.

    ReplyDelete
  34. when it was 1-1 i was thinking extra time won't be so bad to watch. But i'll take 2-1 now. Also Suso is the man so much quality on the ball!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think BR is slowly getting into gears for LFC. He defnitely has an eye for young talent and more important, he's not afraid of playing them in games. We have not been the luckiest in the league, 2 points out of 5 games. But we should not forget about the fact that we played 3 of the strongest teams in the league in Arsenal, Man Utd and Man City. Realistically, we are nowhere near to challenge for top 4 this season, so let this be a training ground for all the new boys and youngsters. We should start players like Suso, Assaidi and Sahin in league games, with Wisdom, Yesil and Pacheco on the bench. Not forgetting that we have other youngsters in Raheem Sterling, Jonjo Shelvey, Coates and the not-so-old first team players such as Joe Allen and Borini. These boys make players like Lucas, Agger and Skrtel look like an old men in the team.

The future is definitely bright for us and we should start getting points in the league. It's only a matter of time!

  36. in all honesty 2014/2015 is our season BR has been brilliant and has done what alot of previous liverpool managers have not done given the youth a chance in all honesty i'm glad liverpool did not perform so well in the transfer market (apart from a striker) as most of these guys would've felt its time to seek pastures new great performance and suso wisdom definitely need contract extension and deserve first team places get in there brendan

    ReplyDelete
  37. exactly BR is brilliant at motivating these players

  38. A wonderful all-round performance. This reminded me of an unknown & young Manchester United team who played with no fear and later became the Beckhams, Scholes, Giggs & Nevilles. What was sweet was that our seniors were thrashed by the same opponent on the same gound only weeks ago. Well done, how I wish the seniors can show the same desire!

  39. I observed both the incident you mentioned. 1) He was waiting and waiting for the through ball but no LFC player actually thought of giving him the ball. 2) He thought of doing Suarez one on one against strong WBA defenders and failed.
These are the observation that made me think he is a bit raw and not that he is bad. I couldn't kick a ball when I was 16 yrs 6 days old. Just need more game time in reserves. :)

  40. We're playing --football-- for the first time in 4 years. Thank you BR.

  41. Now it's time for a rant. I have been saying not to blame the refs for the league position we are in and i believe that but there as to be a time when we can get just one ref to do his job correct. No one as mentioned the ref because we won but the ref had a shocker. There 1st goal was never a free kick as wisdom won the ball. Carra was near his own corner flag and got flattened from behind by the wba forward which resulted in a goal scoring chance........ We should of got the free kick and were lucky not to be 2-0 down. That challenge on Hendo should of been a straight red card but the guy didn't even get a yellow........... I'm sure one of our players would of seen red for that tackle. Wisdom near his own corner flag, wins the ball in a tackle and puts it out for a corner............. He gets a yellow card.
This isn't sour grapes as we won but come on refs do your job and lets stop playing against 11 other players and the ref.

  42. Another wonderful performance by the young kids against a good WBA side at home .I was particularly impressed with Assaidi on the left linking play with Jack Robinson who were both fantastic on the night as our attack mostly came from the left . Pacheco improved in the 2nd period and Yesil looks like he certainly needs more time. The future certainly looks bright for the club .Suso came in as a sub and immediately influenced play leading to the goal . Sadly i can't say the same about Downing or Henderson .

  46. Haha I heard that Muppet as well, patience give Rodgers time, its only been 5 games, I wonder what this Muppet is like in a traffic jam : )

  47. Great Display By Liverpool.. Hope it continue against Norwich.
Btw why is it that BR is consistently persisting on playing Glen Johnson out of position on the left when you have Enrique on the bench?
Too many goals created against Liverpool from the Left, and giving a bunch of costly penalties as well.

Hope that since Kelly is out, BR will move Glen to the right.

  48. What I like yesterday was the bravery of the young lads. They did not let their heads down after just 3 minutes. They played as if it was their last game. Rodgers was brave as well but sometimes situations make heroes. The manager does not have many options and relying on young lads is always going to be a gamble. Overall is about the system and tactics. If we have the right players in the right system, the team works.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow, Mr Rodgers picked up on the same points i did about the ref last night. The gent complained after we won and not lost or drew the game................... Now that is the correct way to make your point.
Hate to keep banging on about Pacheco but wouldn't he be the perfect player to come into the side on Saturday? He was at loan at Norwich so knows all about them. He grew more and more in confidence the longer the game went on. He plucked a ball out the air with arrogance, shot when he could and even did a cheeky nutmeg on someone. His work rate alone caught my eye not to mention his ability to find space on the ball. I hope the manager took him off so he'd be ready for saturday.
