Speculation about the future of Liverpool defender Daniel Agger reached fever pitch during the summer transfer window, with the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bareclona reportedly jostling for the Dane's signature. Agger has made it clear that he's content at Anfield, but in a new interview, the Denmark captain has argued that the constant speculation about his future is actually a good thing.
Speaking to Reporters after Denmark's 0-0 World Cup qualifier draw with the Czech Republic last night, Agger was asked whether the speculation linking him with a move away from Liverpool bothered him. He said:
"It is not something that affects me negatively. It is a positive when your name is mentioned in that context, and it's a good thing if big clubs want me. I have certainly not made up my mind already [about the future] but I'm fine where I am now. The grass is not always greener on the other side, and sometimes you have to just stop and assess whether moving on is actually a good idea"
This statement is a little different to Agger's comments last month, when he emphatically stated he was happy at Liverpool, and willing to discuss a new deal. It's slightly concerning that he hasn't made his mind up about the future yet, as that implies that he's open to the possibility of deals with other clubs.
Discussing the speculation recently, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol suggested Agger needed to show the Reds some loyalty:
"Daniel Agger owes Liverpool big time. He's been at the club for six years, and he's been injured for 3.5 of those years. They [Liverpool] better not sell him because that would be a huge hole at the back".
Nicol is absolutely right about Agger 'owing' Liverpool. The Dane has spent two years of his Anfield career on the treatment table so far, missing 191 games along the way:

Brendan Rodgers said recently that Liverpool would only part company with Agger for 'ridiculous money', which is great to hear, but to be fair, he also said that Andy Carroll would only leave if 'something incredible' came up, and look what happened there (!)
If Agger remains injury free, I full expect the likes of Man City, Barcelona and Real Madrid to come back in for him in January, or next Summer, and given his age and injury history, it's seems likely that FSG will cash-in if the price is 'ridiculous' enough.

Of course it's a good thing. It just owes testament to his quality
ReplyDeleteI think he has brought lot of stability in the defense. He is cool headed, not prone to mistakes unlike Carra and Skrtel, leadership qualities/good communication, ball playing defender, decent jumping and heading, loves the club and injuries are getting lower and lower. He is actually getting to the peak of his career and I for one wouldn't sell him for less than 23mn pounds. The question is, can LFC replace him? Who would be the player with similar qualities in his right frame of mind would come to LFC? and how quickly would he settle? I don't see many world class defenders in the world. You may get strikers, midfielders and goalies but very few world class defender who can bring stability, passion and leadership into the team like Dagger does...!! Love him...!!
ReplyDeleteSorry for my grammar.
ReplyDeleteanyone is replaceable unless they're messi or ronaldo
ReplyDeleteI would like to disagree with you. We did not replace Xabi, Torres, Mascherano, et al yet......leave alone Messi, Ronaldo.
ReplyDeleteJamie please remove ban on my fb profile.
ReplyDeletei forgot to mention, as long as you're in champions league. I reckon these a squillion of players in untapped markets who can potentially match 'irreplaceable' players
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't owe anyone anything for being injured. That's just bad luck. It's not like he got injured on purpose.
ReplyDeleteIf you sign 20 potentials, only 1 or 2 hardly ever come out good enough.
ReplyDeleteHe's a good defender but like his stats say he's very injury prone and for that reason I would let him go for big money. He will always be injury prone. If our manager is clever enough I'm sure we could bring in 2 quality players for the money we would get for agger that never manages 30 games in a season
ReplyDeleteAbove average player but no Hyppia
ReplyDeleteam banned as well carr71 have no idea what for not used foul or abbusive language and i cannot get a reply of jaimie the price we pay for daring to disagree anyway back to agger i think unless results improve drasticaly by january he will not be the only one who might be considering moving on
ReplyDeleteYour right Agger can't help being injured but it's not liverpools fault either. It's not down to bad luck , he's just inherited an injury prone body. Your saying Agger does not owe anything to Liverpool but depends which way you look at it ? Liverpool could of said ages ago hang on a minute he's getting big wages for being at the physio alot so let's just get rid of him but Liverpool didn't they stuck with him. If everybody had your philosophy then no one would ever give money to charity ? Why should we give money to starving children we don't owe them anything and if we did they would not appreciate it cause it's not there fault ?I'm pretty dam sure they do appreciate it though. That's not having a go at you on a charity side of things , for all I know you may help out charities I'm just saying when someone looks after you, you may not owe them anything it just depends how much you appreciate what they have done for you.if it was down to me I'd make these injured players mow the pitche something to at least earn a bit of there thousands they earn. Injured players that can walk of course
ReplyDeleteIs missing nearly half the games in the 7 seasons he's been at Liverpool The average for a player? If he is that good that not to be in the team would make us lose then we would of lost 43% of our games in the last 7 seasons which would be a huge blow surely ? Or even if we lost half the games he was not playing in 21% would still be a big blow to the team I would of thought. Certainly wouldn't help I'm sure
ReplyDeleteDone, but please stick to the comment policy on that account from now on. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteYeah, yeah average player, no not average, he is worse than kochesky right?
ReplyDeleteIn the midst of all this, id like to say a great news and that is we will replace Reina with the new Oliver Kahn, Marc andre ter stegen............unless reina finds his world class form again.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jaimie
ReplyDeleteLook guy whenever Agger plays he stabilizes our defense, which Skrtel never manages. If we must sell a defender it has to be Skrtel, there are replacements for him but not for Agger.
ReplyDeleteConsidering Arsenal are willing to sell anyone why not give a shot at Vermaelan?
Oh by the way Jamie, has not Agger signed a new 80k a week contract.
ReplyDeleteOh and about Carroll, it is an incredible deal, we got 2m+18 option to buy Carroll. And knowing big SAm, it will defintely go through. Just 4 months before this deal, we all agreed in this very site that CArroll is not worth 5m. Let alone a 20m. So it is an incredible deal.
ReplyDeleteWhat you going on about man. I'm sure we could find another defender that can get injured for 43% of his games in 7 seasons lol . In all honesty I agree with you agger is a better defender than skrtel but when you combine the 2 which happen to be our first choice centre half partnership you have 1 that misses nearly half the games of the season on average and the other that can be very rash with his challenges at the best of times. That gives us problems. Thats not all, our full backs are better at going forward then defending and to top that off our keeper is out of form making costly mistakes at the mo. That's without even going onto the fact were not scoring goals. Can't see Joe Allens 94 % pass success rate is going to help address these problems ?
ReplyDeleteNo. Skrtel signed a new contract recently, but not Agger.
ReplyDeleteSo by your reckoning, all the games that Agger has missed have been through injury! 1 game ban for a red card this season. Was the game missed through injury - NO! Is that sensationalizing the stats and twisting the facts - YES! I agree with your point here but at least be transparent.
ReplyDeleteAgger doesn't owe Liverpool anything. They tried to get rid when he wanted to stay and he has the right to consider his options after the loyalty the club has shown him (i.e. none).
ReplyDeleteMaybe it is Liverpool's fault. Maybe something in their training regime. I'd be interested to know if he spent as much time on the treatment table at brondby.
ReplyDeleteAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
ReplyDeleteI HATE YOU SO MUCH
our deffence and goalie are poor, time for a change as good as agger is on the ball, id like coates given more playing time for starters.
ReplyDeletewe need stability and reliable players.
maybe kelly given that chance weve all been waiting for, we cant afford to go buy !!!
he maybe sold to generate funds for a striker and goalkeeper and a backup to Coates
ReplyDeleteWorrying ? NO! just means he is a recognised talent. he did not leave did he!! My nephew live s in Copenhagen and was at school with Nicholas Bendtner, he knows many of the Danish international players and there is n doubt, Daniel loves Liverpool
ReplyDeleteIrreplaceable simple as that I want players at the club who actually really want to be here not money grabbing prima donnas aggers really does love the club just like SG ana JC scoucers born and bred he can be our next Sam hyppia adopted into the Liverpool way ynwa!!
ReplyDeleteDon't forget he was left out of the team consistently by the now england manager. It's true he had a problem at the time with his knee but Agger spoke of his frustration at the time about the style we were playing. Well the author of this site defends the current england manager in his stint as our manager it's safe to say I disagree, not least because he prefered either Soto, Carra or Skrtel ahead of Agger, and before Jamie jumps in how many injured players moan about the style of play and not playing?
ReplyDeleteYet more nonsense in the ever growing let's take something and trying to make it a big controversy. It's just like tabloud journalism
ReplyDeleteTransparent? What are you talking about? I've done the research, and every single game was missed through injury. Agger missed further games, yes, but they have not been included in the calculations. If you think I'm wrong, prove it.
ReplyDeleteAgger made his comments about Hodgson's style of play in September 2010, when he was not injured. He got injured mid-October that year.
ReplyDeleteI seriously wish people would get their facts right, especially about Hodgson. I defended Hodgson against abuse from fans; I did not defend his style of play, management style etc. I simply argued that a manager of LFC deserved respect in his first few months in charge, and that calling for his head after two months was disrespectful, which it *was*
Let us wait until January before making any rash decisions.
ReplyDeleteOnly one that does not apply : Carragher .
He can go now , thats not a rash decision .
He said no to City, when FSG tried to cash in on him, as they have with Carroll, etc. He owes nothing to the venture Capitalists, that are FSG.
ReplyDeleteLets hope that transfergate has woken them up.
Exactly. That is why he is hoping for a new contract which never came in the summer. hence his comment.
ReplyDeleteI believe we have replaced Macherano with Lucas, who is world class, we look to have replaced Xabi with Allen who is looking a bargain for 15m, granted Torres hasn't been replaced, or maybe we have a ready made replacement in the reserves.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, the Premier League is a lot more intense physically than the Danish League, the Premier League is one of the fastest paced leagues in the world, so comparing his time in the EPL with his time in the Danish League, especially when he was in his teens, isn't a compatible comparison.
ReplyDeleteWho is Kochesky?
ReplyDeleteThat may have been the case, but up until he got injured in mid-October, he didn't play many games and Hodgson nearly sold him because he wasn't the Hodgson type of player.
ReplyDeleteWho is they? A manager who lasted less than 6 months? Dalglish didn't try to get rid and nor did Rodgers.
ReplyDeleteWhat is this based on? There is a misconception that our defence and goalie were poor last season, the fact is only 2 teams had a better defence than us last season and that was both the Manchester clubs. This season, we are adapting to a new style of play, there are going to be teething problems.
ReplyDeleteCan you back up that FSG tried to sell him? It was probably more likely that Man City wanted to buy him and FSG put a price tag on him that Man City would not match, basically making him not for sale.
