Lawro claims: LFC will 'look at' £15m striker target in Jan. Good news?

Liverpool's glorious defeat to Manchester United on Sunday highlighted yet again the acute need for a genuine goalscorer at Anfield, and Reds legend Mark Lawrenson has called on Brendan Rodgers to launch a bid for Newcastle striker Demba Ba in the January transfer window.

Last week, Ba's Agent accused Alan Pardew of mismanaging the Senagalese international, and hinted that the striker would leave if things didn't change. Lo and behold, Ba was back in the starting line-up for Newcastle's game with Norwich City yesterday, and ended up scoring the winning goal.

Liverpool have been regularly linked with a move for £15m-rated Ba, who could've left St. James Park for 7m, and Lawro believes Liverpool will look into the possibility of signing him in January. He told The Mirror:

"Demba Ba at Newcastle will be another one that Liverpool have a look at in January. Alan Pardew has made public the fact that he has that £7.5million release clause and I was surprised at that at first.

"But then, after the problems being created by Ba’s agents and the people around him, I just wonder if it is a shot across their bows from Pardew to make it clear that he will not be dictated to by anyone".

If Ba's frustration continues, there will undoubtedly be a whole host of clubs lining up to sign him in January, and you'd hope that Liverpool would be one of them.

  1. 15mn no way. He is better than Carroll so Newcastle will definitely demand more.

  2. Demba Ba has been an excellent signing for us over the last year and it is inevitable that bigger clubs capable of providing Champions League football may come in for him. If that happens it will be difficult for us to hang on to him.

However, Liverpool in it's present form are not one of those clubs and it would show a lack of ambition if he ended up there. You cannot seriously say at present Liverpool are a better side than Newcastle. Don't see this one happening.

  4. No thanks, no more wasting money on Newcastle strikers. There must be better players out there.

  5. yet another attempt to shake Ba loose, keep trying, why would he want to join a lower team

  6. I dont really like Ba too much, but its not about ambition or CL, its about money, and NUFC have a £50k a week salary cap, he wants more, we could easily up the ante as paying him more would be satisfactory to him and his agent. as I say, I hope it does not happen, especially as he is another play me or else character.

  7. you can look at him for £15 mil, probably good value for money considering....

  8. The price was £7M yesterday, its £15M today, how much tomorrow? Lawro stick to Match of the Day, you know nothing about practical aspects of football

  9. Are these poocastle fans forgetting who they are after ONE decent season??? Liverpool will always tower over you in every way shape or form... What is the last thing you won...? Promotion hahahahaha. Man utd will spank you out of league cup tomorrow 4-0 and as for Ba... Keep him, he'll do well for you next season to fight for mid table! Llorente for £18m in january... cheers ta!

  10. If Carroll was 35- Ba would be far more!

  11. there are better players out there Andy Carroll for 1

  12. Just why exactly there r no lfc scouts in Brasil or Argentina in search for a striker. Surely there has to b a striker BETTER and LESS than 15 million pounds.

  13. Why would he want to be in another relegation battle? Been there done that with West Ham.

  14. too much of a liability.
Dodgy knee an all, newcastle got him for free and if im not mistaken hes on a pay as you play contract (or so ive read)
thats why no one paid out his release clause.
newcastle have no risk yet the tell him buys him will have the the fee sitting over his head.
    stay away liverpool!!

  17. poocastle..what an idiot!...liverpoor more to the point
    lets think .
for years carragher and gerrard have carried your flops but now they too are well past thier sell by date
50 k our salary cap for a striker with a gammy knee which could erupt anytime soon...im sure liverpoor would be comfortable doubling that and giving him a long 5 yr contract, after all liverpoor are loaded...was it 2 million they couldnt find for dempsey....mugs

  18. Calm down, ay. You'll be buying a new manager by January to see if you can close the gap as the 2nd team on Merseyside... numpty.

  19. aye llorente will be dead keen and your owners not spending anymore...typical scouse fool

  20. hes on 30k basic plus 20k per appearance....but we had no fee to find, where as liverpoor will have to find 8 million plus huge wages.
    Liverpoor stay away?
Truth is they cant afford to go near him anyway or they already would have, lets face it these comments are only generated by lawrenson the plank who is never right about anything anyway!

  21. Agreed - look at Porto's track record of bringing in South American talent; Deco, Hulk, Lisandro Lopez, Falcao... even if some end up being flops, they usually come in on the cheap. Spend 25M on 3 unproven strikers and one comes good, then we've done ok and can usually recoup some cash on selling the other two. Frustrating to see other clubs do so well in their scouting abroad and we overpay for marginal talent just because they are British.

  22. Newcastle can keep Demba Ba - with his knee, he's not worth 15M, especially for the amount that he/his agent complain in the press, surely that's not good for the dressing room. He should be happy enough to be on the pitch, so don't complain about playing out of position especially if the team is playing well.

As for 'Liverpoor', that's pretty clever; but as a supporter of a club that was just relegated 3 years ago and hasn't won a major trophy (I don't count the 2006 Intertoto Cup) since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup(????), I think you better hold onto that one until you have some sustainable success that says 'My club is better than yours'.... I sadly admit that Man U fans and Chelsea fans can say that to us right now with their recent sustained success, but not Toon fans

  24. Agreed. Lucas is moonlighting as a scout now. Why not use him there? He knows the territory .

    ReplyDelete
  25. He doesn't offer much more than Carroll. I would rather bring back Carroll and develop and mould him into a player we can use. He's still so young and hungry.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Think they've also signed Jackson Martínez, who had been heavily linked with us, and who's scored four in six for them already.

  27. When the whole world thought Liverpool was hard done by referee against ManU. Lawro thought referee made correct decisions. This man must be a hard core ManU fan.
I have no interest in knowing what he thinks. He has put his own and his mates interests before club's interest.
Yes, he is the man who could not find any fault in Dalglish's spending or managing. But he has a lot to talk about Rogers mis-management.

    ReplyDelete
  28. All Ba's goals are from long punts upfield where he outmuscles the defender and puts it in the net. I do not think he would fit into Rodgers style of play. He is more suited to the Newcastle style and it does help to have alongside him a prolific scorer such as Cisse. Liverpool do not possess a prolific scorer.
If Rodgers style of play is not producing goals then he does not have a plan B after sending Carroll on loan. Plan C was to throw Skertel upfront for the last 5 minutes on Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Agreed. Without question, Lucas would be a better scout than he would ever be as a footballer.

  31. Jaimie.

I know everyone ribs you for being a United fan. I also know that you bend over backwards to attempt to write objective articles re: LFC.

However, I would like to ask, WHY IN THE NAME OF GOD IS THERE AN ADVERT ON AN (ALLEGED?) LIVERPOOL WEBSITE ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO
"BOOK YOUR PARTY ONLINE AT UNITEDEVENTS". ????

Do you really need the money that bad? Or do you have 'no control' over advertising, same as when Newsnow keep running adverts for the S*n?

  32. I can't see Ba comin to Liverpool in January unles you show a dramatic improvement in form and are CL contenders which is now unlikely. You just haven't the striking power to make that sort of impact. Also I doubt if the money will be made available unless you are in a desperate situation -again unlikely. Rodgers has totally mismanaged the Carroll situation and I think it's much more likely that he wll be recalled in january. As Malc above says that would be a much better option - Carroll is a much better player than Rodgers has given him credit for so far.

    ReplyDelete
  33. why give newcastle more money when llorente is available. if ba is making trouble at newcastle leave him there.

Great we got rid of Carroll and Enrique for a fortune now for another fortune for a player with a knee that's a ticking time bomb Thank you Bank of Liverpool, you give we take.

  35. I am a Newcastle Fan and apologise for our delusional fans talking about Newcastle being a bigger club than Liverpool. That said Brendan Rodgers is going to struggle and paying 15 million for Allan is a joke. So if you want to pay another 15 million on top if the 41 million we got for Enrique and Carroll bring it on.

I would take whatever the Man -u loving Lawrenson says with a pinch of salt, He needs to be locked up in a straightjacket, he is the worse pundit ive ever heard on a football programe, Never mind telling a manager who too buy for his team how many managerial jobs as he had ? He his the village idiot, the court jester amongst the MOTD pundits all that he says is pure BS. And Billy im sorry to have to tell you this but Kenny as moved on sad i know but Brenden rodgers is LFC`s manager now. No more piss taking thankyou.

The bin dippers are really clutching at straws bless em, going on as if theyre a top club. USED to be a top club but dont really have much to offer Ba these days, you say money but you dont have any, how can you afford Ba when you couldnt afford Dempsey. I would never claim the Toooon are a bigger club than you, that would be crazy but at present and for the immediate future we are in a better place than you, youve got years of overhaul n rebuilding to do after dogleash spent all the pennies so stop living in the past and being delusional, its just jokes for the rest of us

  41. You have no idea who I am, where I'm from, or why I support LFC... I think supporting a club that hasn't won a meaningful trophy since the 2006 FA Cup is pretty loyal.... there is no bandwagon at LFC just now. You come onto a Liverpool fan forum insulting our club and our supporters with your piss poor grammar/spelling, and I'm saying as a Toon fan you have no business insulting other teams/supporters/Lawro.

The sorry truth is as a newcastle fan ive been to anfield more than most who post on here and thats as an away fan.

  43. Considering that Ba was allegedly available for £7M in the summer, why did none of the European clubs come in for him. To then believe that the LFC management will sanction a £15M move for him is nonsense. Also how many predictions have Lawro made that have actually come true.

    ReplyDelete
  44. well said, carroll would be on a few goals for the season had it not been for the injury.

    ReplyDelete
  45. no thanks, keep ye ba. 15 mill should be spen else where, ie walcott for starters

    ReplyDelete
  46. I only said use him there while he recovers from injury BR actually has given him such a role now. Lucas is a player we have sorely missed.
He is a fine player. cant wait for him to be back in our midfield.
