VIDEO: Raheem Sterling's performance against Man City (Every touch)

After the 3-0 opening day setback against West Brom, it was heartening to see Liverpool bounce back with such an encouraging performance against Man City. The Reds arguably did enough to beat Roberto Mancini's men but, alas, a couple of silly mistakes meant the club ended up with one point instead of three. There were lots of positives to take from the game, chief of which being the performance of Raheem Sterling.

Last week, Jan Molby argued that Sterling is 'not ready' for regular first team action, but if the Man City game proved anything it is that the youngster IS ready, and hopefully he'll continue to keep Stewart Downing out of the team.

In the last few months, Sterling has attracted praise from the likes of Ian Rush, Jamie Redknapp and Didi Hamman, and a couple of weeks ago, Joe Cole joined the chorus of approval. Speaking to The Telegraph, Cole enthused:

"Raheem’s going to be a big player for Liverpool. He has got that mentality. He's competitive and he's a strong boy, and I don't think anything will faze him. He has definitely got goals in him. He can be a special player".

I don't think we have to worry about Sterling becoming too big for his boots though; as evidenced by the training session smackdown in the forthcoming LFC documentary, Brendan Rodgers has the youngster's feet firmly on the ground.

  1. Watched yesterday and was very pleased! If your talented enough then your old enough!

Just thinking is Suso and Pacheco will get a chance...

Plus Jamie, who do you prefer.... Sturridge, Walcott or Sinclair?

Any of those would be fine with me although I prefere Sturridge, minus his rotten attitude.

  2. I agree that he is physically ready, he's proved that already but i would be just slightly worried about the mental aspect of the game i.e. managing the expectations....

So far he has stepped up and won his place so in that respect he has coped arguably better than Downing....but he will have a lot to learn and a permanent place will be all about how he now develops.....

Great talent in the making and Brendan could be just the right type of manager to help him make it, i guess we'll have to see how it pans out, can't help thinking of the young Danny Rose at Spurs who is similar, made a great debut scored a great goal but still with a fair bit to learn.

One things for sure, he's done himself and the Club proud already, love the way he plays and always wants to get forward, not afraid of playing his game either so all in all a very welcome sight at LFC.

  3. Very pleased with Sterling's performance, considering his age. Maybe, just maybe, first bloody good winger/wide player at Anfield since McManaman. Early days but what he has shown so far, allows one to be hopeful. For me, in terms of worry, is whether he will suffer from injuries like many a pacy player have suffered from and how he copes/recovers from them as well as how wary the manager will be of it (in my view, I think the club rushed Owen back from injuries too quick but that is a guess). Got nothing to based that worry on in relation to Sterling himself, so just a speculative worry, stemming from the likes Owen, Giggs, Lennon, etc, with their hamstring injuries.

Going by Rodgers comments, Downing could be playing at left back. Hmm.

  4. Fdotm i would prefer Scott Sinclair because this youngster has pace like Walcott and is comfortable on the ball. This kid can find the back of the net and would definitley keep Downing on the bench. I think Sinclair would be the cheapest of the lot too.

  5. i would have sinclair ahead of walcott and sturridge any day of the week, walcott is vastly overrated and sturridge can be very greedy and can go 90 minutes without having his name mentioned

  6. Sterling is potentially the next John Barnes... Basically an absolutely brilliant player!

  7. Ditto about Sturridge and his greed, although I see him more as a striker, instead of a winger, even though he gets played out wide a lot. The same with Walcott but he is more willing to look for the pass than Sturridge. Can be very annoying to watch Sturridge, as he has these moments where you know he just wants to go solo and/or shoot, no matter what. To his credit, he can finish but he gets played out wide, yet he all he wants to do is go for goal/solos most of the time. He is good but no Ronaldo at it and you got to be that good, to make leeway for greediness. He is frustrating to watch as he has can be very good, when he shows unselfish awareness.

  12. Get a grip. The video is freely available on Youtube, and it's available as an embed. I didn't create the video, so it's not copyright infringement. Perhaps you should educate yourself instead of trolling. Any further pointless posts like this and you will be banned (or under any of your other aliases)

  14. Not sure it's trolling JK, even just linking to copyright material can get you in trouble with the content rights holder. Just because someone else made the video doesn't absolve you of responsibility. You'd be advised to keep up with the legal implications of stuff like this seeing as you get plenty of visitors to this site. Laws are changing in favour of rights holders and you could quite seriously find yourself receiving a letter from Premier League lawyers. It's already happened countless times before and plenty of web sites have failed with the same argument you're putting forward.
