43% - The brutal truth about why LFC must sell £20m-rated Daniel Agger...

Rumours persist over the future of Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, with Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly lining up to sign him. When Agger is fit and on form, he is an excellent player, but unfortunately, over the last 6.5 years, the Dane has been one of Liverpool's most injured players, and with figures of £20m being bandied about, perhaps now is the ideal time to sell Agger and replace him with a less injury-prone central defender?

Agger recently confirmed that he is 'happy' at Anfield, and Last season, he played 27 league games, the most he's managed since 2006-7.

That's all well and good, but somewhat predictably though, he was also out injured for two months, and the brutal truth is that based on his past history, the probability of Agger *not* picking up further injuries is slim. Let's take a look at the facts:

Daniel Agger Injury History at Liverpool FC

KEY POINTS

* A total of 24 months out injured since arriving.

* This equates to 43% of his time at Liverpool on the sidelines.

* Averages only 26 games per season

* Featured in only 47% of Liverpool's games since 2006.

* Averages 3.6 months of injury time per season

* Missed 53% of Liverpool's games since 2006.

* Played in only 48% of league games since 2006.

At some point, Liverpool have to look at the amount of time Agger spends on the sidelines and make a decision about whether keeping him is actually beneficial to the club. Sadly, I don't see the Dane being a long-term solution, especially with his fitness history.

Of course, the opposite could be true and he may never get another injury for his whole career. That would be the ideal, but the probability of that is clearly very low. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Agger, but it's not a question of quality, it's a question of utility:

* If a player is regularly injured then the club does not receive the full benefit for the amount of money being paid out in wages every week.

* Solid, enduring defensive partnerships cannot be created/maintained due to injury absence.

Agger will be 28 in December, and Liverpool may never get another chance to command such a big fee for his services. Additionally, if Agger gets another long-term injury next season, his value will decrease, and the club will lose out on several fronts.

As much as I'd hate to see Agger leave, decisions like this need to based on logic and reality, not emotion, and based on injury history and age, now is clearly the right time to sell the player.

My question is this: given the figures revealed in the table above - figures of which FSG and Brendan Rodgers will undoubtedly be aware - is there a supportable argument for turning down £20m and keeping Agger at Anfield?

I can't see one.

  1. But the main problem is there any person who can replace him? He is good at going forward to attack too.

  2. No one is irreplaceable.  The club has lost great defenders in the past (Lawro, Hansen, Nicol, Hyypia etc) and still survived.  I personally feel fans need to get out of the mindset that certain players are 'irreplaceable'.  It's just not true.

  3. We need the cash. Time to cash in.

    ReplyDelete
  4. You have to take into account that Agger wasn't always first choice with Rafa and Roy. The times he spent on the bench can't merely be written off as "injured" - Because he wasn't. He remains one of the best in the world, and to be honest where are we going to find someone of that quality for £20m? I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I've taken that into account.  The times I've included are only injury periods, not bench periods.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Id be more open to buying first then selling. Clubs in the past have pushed up prices knowing we are short in those positions we are looking at.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Skrtel is much better when Agger is playing next to him...And there is no one good enough LFC can buy to replace him..

    ReplyDelete
  8. i understand your point but i think we shud at least keep him for 1 more season so he can continue his formidable partnership with Martin Skryl and den Rodgers eases Coates into the team.

    ReplyDelete
  9. You seriously believe that Agger is so good that he's irreplaceable? That's emotion talking, not reality (IMO)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree that no one is irreplaceable but with limitied money and no european football and a new wage system can we really attract the same kind of player that would be linked with barca and man city like agger is.
it is very easy to say everyone can be replaced but its another story to actually do it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. check your maths. 24 months out does not equate to 43% of his time at liverpool out injured. you only really have two key points. the rest are simply rewording previous key points.

essentially lfc couldn't attract a defender as good as agger so why get rid. he had a good season last season and built a solid partnership with skrtel so why ruin that and start from scratch? if we sell him i would expect skrtel to want to leave aswell and then we're fooked...

    ReplyDelete
  12. I agree but it take times to find those defender. I afraid it would affect the this season campaign

    ReplyDelete
  13. Check your reading comprehension: the 43% relates to season time only; I've included the method I used in the table.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't really get it. Just a few weeks ago u wanted him to replace Gerrard as captain and now you want to sell him ??

    ReplyDelete
  15.  I think the point is should we be selling our key players when a good offer comes? for me i dont think so look at Xabi we got a good deal off him but never have we been the same so to sell Agger will be a big mistake he is a big LFC player look at Torres we had a good deal but dont tell me you dont wish or think what would happen with Torres/Suarez partnership and its no guarantee that the money from Agger sales would be used wisely just like Xabi/Torres money we want players coming through the ranks so we should keep Agger til Kelly/Coates can step up

    ReplyDelete
  16. utility like, yaya and kolo toure missing out every now and then due to african cups? so is it about the whopping 20m that we should sell ? shucks. this does not feels right. what past is already past, so if he had a bad record and solely because of his bad record he should be sold? without that alluring price tag, no one would reasonably want to sell him. and it feels that the price tag is so blinding... he stood by us and i think we should too :S

    ReplyDelete
  17. He's a Man Utd  supporting WUM

    ReplyDelete
  18. I would agree with Gideon. If we can get someone of suitable quality in first then OK, but reluctantly.

Also, stats can provide a supportable argument for keeping him. His injury record is not linear. Apart from the season before last, he has become less injury prone.

And, what about bringing on Coates, Wilson and Kelly? Kelly has had the opportunity to show his capability, albeit mostly in the full back position, and doesn't seem out of depth.

I'd rather keep Agger, but if we can really get £20M, this not being a hyped up media number, then yes, maybe we should cash in.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Replace Gerrard *if* he stayed.  Since then, he's been constantly linked with a move away, which has meant I've thought about things more. Sorry, I didn't know I had to have an inflexible, immovable, unchanging view on all things LFC.

    dagger will go anywhere

    ReplyDelete
  21. exactly, if it were Rafa, he would be a bigger pull but were almost back to ground zero.
ball playing, solid defenders are hard to come by and id rather MS was sold although, as jamie points out , there could be an argument for selling him for 20m. i say that for 2 reasons, the ones jamie has mentioned, but also, agger does deserve a shot at some more titles. he's a great player and , as the euros showed, can play at the highest level. i could not begrudge him a move to barca but at 20m, they may as well throw in a player and go for martinez. a move to city would be as much about cash as it was about titles ,and i would hate to see him in the light blue.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If given the choice I'd much rather sell Skrtel than Agger. I think he'll really thrive under Br style of play. Seeing carra and skrtel trying to build up from the back is shameful for a club aspiring to be in the champions league...
I never quite knew Agger was injured that much and is already 6 years at the club!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Accepted - players are not irreplaceable. But the question here really is whether Liverpool could replace him. If Agger goes, we've got a headache to deal with in finding a replacement of his quality. Given our current rebuilding phase, the likelihood of us attracting a replacement of Agger's quality are practically nil - which means if we sold Agger it would, in the short to medium term at least, do more harm than good. In the long term we would recover, eventually, but I can't see the value in selling him at this stage as it would be too detrimental.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Its easier to replace somebody who, no matter how 'irreplaceable' they are is alwasy injured and only playing 50% of the time...therefore you are already replacing him for half the time!

    ReplyDelete
  25. what is it with all the arguing today? this is a site for opinion isnt it? would be a bit boring if we all had the same views! Agger is a class defender but facts are facts and he is replaceable but the question is with no champs league etc who do Liverpool replace him with? them stats Jaimie are frightening! i'm all for replacing him if it's a good replacement but when he's fit i would put him up there with the best. He seems loyal to me and i hope he stays but in the words of Carra no man is bigger than LFC so if he comes out and says he wants to leave then it's good bye Daniel

    ReplyDelete
  26. Dagger will go, i feel like they will offer adam johnson and 18m for him, i dont want him to leave as i feel when fit he is one of the best if not the best cb in the prem. but Jaimie has a point if we can get 18m for a bit part player and get in someone like Dede for around 15m i think it would be a bit of crude business.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If City offered 18 Million and Johnson my advice to Liverpool would be snap there arm off!! i cant see them offerening that deal but would be nice. If he does go i just hope he is replaced and quickly i cant see coates stepping up to the 1st team just yet on a permanent basis and i might get a backlash here but i think carra is past it

    ReplyDelete
  28. Agger is valuable not just because of his defending, but also his attitude. He is a leader who leads by example. We must not only calculate his direct contribution, but also the contribution he makes due to his effect on his teammates. Personally I think when Gerrard hangs his boots up that Agger should take over.
In terms of his playing, Agger is one of the best in the world. We should always strive to keep our best assets. If we want to raise funds then we should start with others (Adam springs to mind)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have a soft spot for Agger, as he can actually play with the ball at his feet. However if the deal was if we get 20mil and all can be re used, then yes I`d take it.

We have some good young defenders like Kelly and Coates as back up, so  if we spent say 13mil on buying a new top defender, and the other 7mil on say dempsey, I`d say it was worth it, his sale would help the team, but only if FSG let BR spend the cash we get.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Whilst i agree his injury record is very poor i'm not as convinced there are that many alternatives. You mention Vertonghen but it remains to be seem if he can hack it in the EPL. Its a difficult one as the money is useless if we buy average players as his replacement then we will continues to just go backwards, death by a thousand cuts so to speak. Conversely if we turn down potentially £18-20m and he gets another long term injury then we would all wish he had left. My heart definately says no, but equally if its true he is after c£100k a week to stay, given the stats above i would probably let him go.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Carra is past it and i dont feel Coates is ready or good enough atm, he looked dodgy in the olympics so if we do let him go we need to hold out for as much as we can ansd replace as quick as we can.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jamie, I'm sure you were calling for Agger to be made the captain this season!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. On a different note, whats going on with Bellars? I completely understand if the rumours that he wants to leave for family reasons are true, but why the hell our we being reported to be letting him go on a free and paying 25k of his wages too? Surely if he wants to go, and Cardiff want him 2mil min should be the offer.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Their is a lot of deadwood that i would like to see us get rid off, i.e Adam, Downing, Cole, Spearing, to think of a few. we do need to try and keep our best players but there is also a balance off being the best player we have for a whole season or only being able to play a bit part in every season which will hinder us in the later parts of each season.

    ReplyDelete
  35. What about Kelly?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Selling him is fine as long as you can get a replacement, without spending all of the £20m. Otherwise it is pointless to gamble on a new player, I would keep him for sure, unless we are going to give Coates or Sama a real chance. At least then we pocket the cash and promote from within, FSG might be looking at that???

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jaimie has already answered this please read the posts before commenting :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. how can Agger be made captain if he's always injured? that's pretty stupid... so your argument is very flawed.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I can see where your coming from Jaimee, Agger is very injury prone. But from my point of view we need to move on the players who aren't good enough (which we have plenty of) and build the team round our better players and clearly Agger is one of those. With a spine of Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Lucas, Gerrard and Suarez we have the makings of a good team. If we can add three of four good players we can compete for the Champions league spots again. I know we've got to give Rodgers some time and get behind him but I'm getting a little disappointed with the way he's going about things. If Carroll is forced out I can live with that because he didn't perform until the second half of the season and maybe won't fit into the system. If Agger is forced out I'll be a little bit peeved because he one of the best centre backs around, performed well last season and will undoubtably fit into our new keep ball system. Rodgers has to get the fans onside early and forcing out a fans favourite is a very dangerous way to go. Finally if Agger is to be sold it HAS to be 25m plus. City payed 22m for Lescott, Agger is head and shoulders above him so surely my valuation is realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  40.  I'd take 18mil and Adam Johnson personally. Not sure if there are too many replacements out there though and both Kelly and Coates don't look ready for a full premiership season. Carra in the starting 11 doesn't fill me with any kind of confidence, so it's definetly a tricky one.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Based on your question and your question alone.... I can't think of a supportable reason to turn down the sort of money the media are suggesting Man city will offer for his services! assuming he wants to leave.

As long as the money is re-invested, which I believe it will be, I personal see no reason to refuse a bid in the of 17m-20m zone if Agger wants to leave, if he doesn't, then no sale.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with with the sentiment, but Agger is approaching his peak age as a defender and will only get better.  Manchester City wouldn't be interested if this wasn't the case.  A simillary good defender would cost the same money.  We'd have to get a youngster in and go with Coates for now - breaking him in with Carra - but Coates is also a youngster.

Anyone else would have to bed-in - that would make it the entrie team!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hello Gano, I think Signing Dede would be an ideal replacement for agger, as much as i would love him to stay, if a player does want to leave (not saying he does) the surely we cant keep him. we could sign Dede for 13-15m wich is a profit of 5-7m which could be used on other targets i.e sinclair, Allen and Ramirez.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Agree. Clearly, the same guy who negotiated Aquilani's transfer (with LFC paying 3.4m of his wages for two years) is handling the Bellamy transfer.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Kelly is a great player but is he solid enough to be a the heart of our defence, i would prefer kelly at right back and to buy Dede or even Hummels if agger was sold.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Of course there are players who are irreplaceable. Have Man u found an adequate replacement for Ronaldo? Nope.

Is Messi replaceable if he ever left Barca? Nope.

If Agger left, could we afford/tempt an adequate replacement?  I don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  47. As long as Dede is good enough?, then yes. That is the problem as we know Agger is quality, will Dede be the same quality???

    ReplyDelete
  48. If we keep Agger and he gets injured again, which is a likely scenario then he is not playing for us anyway and we then have to utilize Coates or Wilson with Skrtel (and Carra). I think we should sell him now, for 20mill, use that money to buy some much needed attacking players and use Coates, who could turn out to be very good anyway.
Agger is awesome but if he's not playing then he might as well be out injured for another team.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Mancy don't care. They have the money. They will pay 20mil for a squad player. Lescott and Kompany will be untouchable. Dagger will become a bench warmer bit part substitute.

    ReplyDelete
  50. personally i say keep him, hopefully his injuries will be behind him and if he does get a knock then bring M.kelly in to cover as i believe he will be our central defender in the future!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Neiljamiesonhall2:30 pm, August 06, 2012

"Still survived"? is that what Liverpool are about, survival? I need to be more ambitious than that. However, I suppose 20m is tempting but it will be difficult to find a replacement for less, unless you think Ashley Williams is good enough? He is apparently who Rodgers wants and he is rarely injured. I'm not so sure.

    ReplyDelete
  52. No one has taken the band away from Stevie Me, despite is poor form for 3 years and injury record.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Jamie i think that at this moment in time he is close to irreplaceable for several reasons; the first being we won't be able to get someone in if he goes of the same calibre: a) there aren't that many decent ball playing centre backs around and b) we can't attract them at this moment in time. I think we often underestimate the importance of Agger and Skrtel at the back; together they are world class and it would be difficult trying to get another partnership as strong. He is also still relatively young whilst being very experienced and a national captain. Up to this point (and hopefully in the future) he has been extremely loyal, even throughout the dark times and we should repay that loyalty by not cashing in!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I hope he's not going anywhere..at least keep him this season after good last. .season.

    ReplyDelete
  55. As nigwel said, we had to cope with his absence 50% of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Kanwar, a thoroughly vile internet troll.
Paid lackey of Hicks and Gilette, and obviously trying to justify an asset strip here.
    Pondlife..

    ReplyDelete
  57. it does look that way, which is shocking. Never ever should we be paying clubs to have our old players. IMO Both Aqua and Bellars could have been sold without that clause. I know saleries are a part of it, but surely in this case if Bellars wants to go home that much, he can take a pay cut.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Do we have the stats for the amount of time Gerrard has been injured in the last few years? I'm sure his stats over the last 3 years would be close to that of Agger's for the last 3 years. Does that mean we should contemplate selling Gerrard too?

    ReplyDelete
  59. The brutal truth about why Liverpool shouldn't sell Agger - he is easily the best defender at the club and LFC have a far lower success rate than 50% in the transfer market over recent years (and don't seem keen to fork out for quality players atm either).

So we'll likely end up with a far less talented replacement available 100% of the time. Not worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  60. if agger does go we already have two replacements in kelly and coates both of who are good and would give 100% for the club

    ReplyDelete
  61. Then who will replace him and how much will he cost.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Agger is one of our top players who brings stability, class and confidence within our defence. We should be doing everything possible to keep him as if we keep on selling our best players we will continue to decline. Surely we must have learnt from our mistakes over the when years since the rut began with selling alonso, torres; maserano etc. The reason some of our better players have left is because we as a club show lack of ambition and when u sell one or two decent players, others will follow and over the years we continued to do this and moving forward a day will come when we'll just have more average players then world class and just be seen as a feeding club for mancity, chelsea etc. Lets stop this process before its too late. Agger made 27 appearances last season, howz is that injury prone, next we will say sell gerrard as he's injury prone as well... Some people make me laugh, like we have a ready made replacement for agger just waiting to step in!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Its time to sell Agger and bring in Coates, we cannot afford to miss out on £20m + we have to move on but however we need Carra on the bench this season, that Amoribietta is good & tough, but Coates proved how good he is, its his time now, at least it will be a bid payday.

    ReplyDelete
  64. You may not have noticed, but there seems to have been a shift in opinion in recent years such that now this site (and many other sites atm to be fair) seem to have somehow come to the conclusion that Gerrard is a liability for the team so the answer to your question their would probably surprise you.
Apparently Gerrard should make way for another player that another that has a 90% pass completion rate and little to no creativity asap...

    ReplyDelete
  65. Since when did fans care so much about how much profit the clubs owners make???

    ReplyDelete
  66. I cant believe the coments here!

We can't afford to get rid of our best players!

Sell the crap players first, there are plenty to choose from. In our current position we will struggle to attract quality players, so we wont progress.

For those of you who think Coates or Kelly could step into Aggers shoes I will use the Mcenroe quote 'You cannot be serious!!'

    ReplyDelete
  67. Why dont the champions want to buy Kelly or Coates for less than the cost of Agger?

    ReplyDelete
  68. If Agger wants to go and we get a £20 million offer we have to sell.

Everyone needs to face up to reality of our finances. We are not City or Chelsea.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Cheap shot. What were we suppose to do with acquilani. Hodgson, dalglish and now Rodgers didn't fancy him. Juventus and Milan the same so they were not exactly fighting to sign him. Based on the info I have seen we will save about £12m over the two years. Mistake was made at the beginning not now. As for Craig were is the quote about us paying part his salary.

    ReplyDelete
  70. And we wont be like them again for a long, long time if we let our best players go.

What will the message be to Suarez and Reina if we get rid of Agger?

Borini, Allen, Dempsey, Williams, loan players? come on smell the coffee before its too late. With the new financial regulations we wont be able to catch the teams above us unless we hang onto our better players.

Keep what we have and hope the situation changes quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  71. is somebody paying you to wright this shite.

    ReplyDelete
  72. We are not like them because the of way that they are financed.

Man City's wage bill was 121% of turnover in 2010/2011

Chelsea are funded by an oligarch.

We are a business. We budget. They don't currently need to.

We have tried slugging it out financially, it doesn't work, so we have to trust that BR can transform us by changing our strategy on the pitch.

The new financial regulations will benefit us. We are already operating close to the limits now I would guess.

The message to Reina and Suarez and co is that LFC is a business that is trying to do things right financially and build a side that plays the game using methods that are currently working for Barca. We are building a team and BR needs to be trusted.

Any player that doesn't like it can leave as far as I am concerned, and some may do if we don't achieve top four this year.

What do you propose we do? Spew bucket loads of cash on players we can't afford and jeopardise the club?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Good players bring money into the club - there's only so long that Liverpool will remain a major TV draw if we just fill the team with trash, and that is where a significant amount of our money comes from.

Good players also attract other good players to a club. Good players want to play in good teams, not teams that are "rebuilding" and might be good in 3-4 years.

It's time that everybody accepts the fact that players are not like fans and don't have years to wait around for a club to develop around them. And that the longer that we hang around outside the elite, the harder that it will become to get back in.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I dont know what the answer is, but I do know the teams that win trophies have the best players.

We cant afford to be out of the CL too long, never mind having a chance at trying to win the league.

It wasnt long ago we won the CL & nearly won the PL. How far are we away from that now.

This is painful, we are heading nowhere fast. The direction we are taking is the wrong one and we need to recognise the situation fast.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think the only option available is to trust that BR can build a team that can successfully employ the same tactics as his Swansea side.

If the players can quickly adapt and we can consistently beat the bottom 14 sides in the league we will go a long way to getting back to top 4. We still have a good squad.

If we can do that, we can keep Suarez. He is our best player, he is irreplaceable at the moment.

Admittedly, if Agger leaves it creates a problem. Time will be against us and we will end up overspending on a replacement.

Appointing BR, and then relenting on having a director of football, shows that the owners are not afraid to make sensible decisions.

It may take a few months but hopefully we are successful under him otherwise it will be complete rebuild time in 2 years.

You are right when you say that the teams with the best players win. Look at City, no matter how poor they were as a group, someone popped up with individual magic and saved the day.

    We can't afford £200k + salaries and I'm glad we can't.

We will have to rely on the team being more than the sum of it's parts.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Given current financial state, I would suggest that Suarez is irreplaceable

    ReplyDelete
  77. Completely agree. I'll get slated for this, but if we can get money + Adam Johnson then I'd be very happy with that. He's a great defender but Rodger's system relies on fluency starting from the back with a solid understanding between the two CB's. I feel that another 20 league appearance season would undermine this.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I think you have to take into account that Agger has cracked his ribs couple of times that have taking him out for a long period. Cracked ribs are cracked ribs, it doesn't make you injury prone. Injury prone is someone that keeps pulling their groin and hamstrings. Kelly, Johnson, Gerrard are in that category.

    ReplyDelete
  79. They also had a top quality player in Kompany that saved them on numerous occasions. If we get rid of Agger, with no decent replacement. Liverpool is doomed. I don't care how much posession we have. Carragher and even Coates are way to shaky in the back.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Agree with you man. All this talk is making me rowdy.

    ReplyDelete
  81. It's always one thing or another however. The numbers don't lie. Yes he can't help cracked ribs, but its just adding it to a long list of previous injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  82. As our most techinically gifted centre half, i cant understand why rogers would want him gone? We may 'survive' withot him but I am not content to only survive, i want to flourish and challenge. Although agger has been injured at times, he has still put in enough performances for Man city (the leauge champions, with bags of money) to want to sign him???

    ReplyDelete
  83. Knowing us, we'll spend the whole £20m on Roger Johnson. The problem is not that we can't see the logic in selling an injury prone player, but that we have absolutely no faith in the club finding a good replacement after the last two Summers. It's not that he's irreplaceable, just that the club has proved itself incapable of finding players who are good enough.

  84. Agger & Skirtel are a formiddable force and in any team you start to build from the back.  We start to mess around and break up that combination then all hell will break lose.
We dont score many goals anyway, therefore Agger brings calm and stability to our defence.  You take him out carra or skirtel will start to panic as they feel more relaxed when Agger's in the side.  Its players like Gerrard & Agger who breed confidence in the side and you cannot buy that on the cheap.  If Agger was not a lfc player right now we would have no chance of signing him as he's world classs and would be  snapped up by mancs, chelsea or barcelona who can offer medals & champs lge.  We are lucky to have him right now and would not sell him at any cost, offer him a contract asap which will tie him down for years as the guy appreicates loyalty. We obviously cannot offer champs league or league medals anytime soon.  He knows he can win medals elsewhere so lets not piss him off.  He's happy here so we should use that to our advantage, as others in that position would just leave....

PS: Please dont insult Agger by mentioning coates or kelly as replacements.....yeah maybe in 2-3 years they MAY get to the standard of Agger's ability but right now they are not a ready made replacements and if they were they would be linked to other clubs, a bit premature if you ask people who know there football!!

  85. If football was about making money, maybe this would be a good deal, the fact is any decent replacement will cost 15m. Clubs will raise the price when they see our wallet bulging. Also there is no guarantee that the replacement will be good enough - Carroll, Downing, Adam, Aquilani and Henderson spring to mind. If Rodgers continues with his obsession of targeting  Swansea players, we may be looking into buying Williams - God help us!

It also sends out the wrong signal to our other players, why would Suarez, Skrtel and Lucas want to stay, if that is the level of our ambition.

  86. Although I'm fond of Agger's ability and commitment to LFC all this while, with 4-5 yrs of prime years left not inclusive of injuries that he may sustain in that period, I feel its best we let go of him and promote Kelly or Coates...
    £20m is a good offer...anything more is a bonus...

  87. Yeah me too.  If the club want to make money sell the deadwood first, if agger is sold what message does that send to the other players.  If agger wants to leave on the other hand then we must hold out for as much as we can and have a good replacement lined up.  We have a tough start to the season so we need our best players in position.

  88. Jamie are u really a liverpool fan or ur a project of our rivals who hold parties to celebrate our downfall?.....why are you advocating for sale of star players when you don't have the replacement at hand?can't you see how we are being exploited in the transfer market because of our desperation to sign stars?since 2009 we have paid an incredulous amounts for very pathetic players

  89. the facts are there, he hasnt been fit enough but the stats youve displayed dont include when he has been fit and the likes of benitez preferred skrtel and carragher as a pair and the same with hodgson the retard who any player with skill on the ball didnt get a chance

  90. so many comments but i not going to say keep or sell agger but if we are selling then first we have to sign the replacement for him bcoz in current situation of LFC mean couldn't attract any quality players also in other hand we could end up paying whole money from agger's sale for mediocrity player surely where we are now used deal transfer.."laudrup demanding 20m for allen where he's only worth 8-10m what a joke but he knows LFC will pay that much for sure" bloody business..

  91. Ashley Williams will replace him. Cos: 30million

  92. call yourselves fans agger is  as important to the team as ste and jamie he put his heart and soul for the club whats more important is the fact that the board is sanctioning this move We cant keep selling our best players to our rivals toress chelsea agger man city yes no one is irreplaceable but BR can not attract quality players even his own\ sig /turned him down so who will we end up with as a replacement  the next season looks pretty dismal Nesn should make funds available for BRso he dosent need to sell but looking at players brendan is interested in i can see why they are reluctant come liverpool sort it out and make your fans happy again NESN YOU HAVE TO SPECULATE TO ACCUMMALATE  stop crying poverty and spend money made last week in usa

  93. How do we no when Kelly and Coates are ready for the first team. Young Kelly didn't seam to be fazed last season when he was playing and counter to some of the posts on here i thought Coates had a good olympics and in fact I believe it is an insult to both these young players if we were not talking about them being given there chance. Agger is 28 he has been playing for us for 6.5 years which means he started playing for us at 21.5, Kelly is 22 and Coates wil be 22 in October and I read posts on here also saying that Coady should be given a chance. So do we have cover for Agger imo the answer is yes we have.

  94. agger reminds me of rvp who spent most his time injured and had 1.5 great seasons

  95. Kompany was an amazing signing, by Mark Hughes. Wow, 7 million.

Don't tell me there isn't dozens of defenders like him about Europe waiting to be uncovered.

We've poached all City's scouts, so let's find them!!!!

  96. Great defender agree with the sale of him, on the condition we use the funds well.  Also time to hold clubs to ransom like they do us, tell city its 25m + Adam Johnson id be ok with that

  97. Well done. Good article. yet, no one is irreplaceable, i best believe he should go, at least we can generate some money for him

    ReplyDelete
  98. would also like to make the point that if u dont get a pre season behind u and u dont start games regularly then u will pick up stupid injuries and wont be able to get ur body used to playin regularly in which has been the case since agger has been here

  99.  Well, it's actually 43% (it says so at the top) but sorry, I'm being pedantic.  So he has played (or been able to play) 57% of the time.

The major flaw with that perspective is to look how weak at the back we are when Agger isn't playing.  Now, imagine that 100% of the time instead of 43%.  It makes me shudder!

But that is what could very easily happen if we sell Agger and don't replace him; or replace him with someone who isn't adequate to do so.

Besides, you're only predicting that he might be injured for 50% of the next season.  What if he never gets injured during the season and is available for 100% of the games?  Doubtful I know, but it could happen.  Then your argument falls flat.
