Swansea midfield star Joe Allen reportedly agreed personal terms with Liverpool last week, and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs is convinced the Welsh International has a fantastic career ahead of him.
Speaking to the Press after Team GB's elimination from the Olympics, Giggs - who captain the team to the quarter-finals - was asked about speculation linking Allen with a move to Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur. He enthused:
"Because he is Welsh, Joe is someone I have taken a close interest in. He is such a talented player and the way he played at Swansea last season was fantastic. He fitted right in there and I am sure he will go on to have a very good career"
According to a Swansea City source, the Swans 'allowed Allen’s representatives to talk terms with Liverpool', the result of which was the negotiation of a deal that well 'set him up for life'.
The sticking point seems to be the transfer fee. The Source claims Liverpool have 'tabled an offer of £12.5 million plus a player on loan — thought to be Jonjo Shelvey'
Responding to the renewed speculation last Thursday, Swansea manager Michael Laudrup, insisted that nothing had changed. He said:
"He [Allen] is with the GB team at the Olympics so I have not had the opportunity to talk to him since I arrived. It’s normal there is interest because the new manager of Liverpool is the ex-manager of Joe Allen.
“We all know he is a very good player, but I can assure you there’s nothing concrete at this moment. Let’s see what happens — I can’t really tell you anything else right now"
Ryan Giggs is not the only admirer of Allen; last month, Liverpool forward Craig Bellamy raved:
"He [Allen] is special. He has made so many key plays for Swansea last season. He’s a Brendan Rodgers player, he fits Liverpool to a tee. If Liverpool are able to secure him, they will have a real gem of a player. I would be shocked if Liverpool did not go for him this summer. "

hes rubbish, Henderson & Shelvey are far better players why spend money on average swansea players?
ReplyDeleteI imagine that, if Giggs DID rate Allen highly, then he'd be signing for United, who have lacked exactly that kind of player for years.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Giggs is far from a shining example of Welsh patriotism. His appearance record is pitiful for a player who has played at the highest domestic level for over 20 years.
I'd go for Ramirez first and then Pariera . Not sure if spelt name correctly.
ReplyDeleteI really like the guy and think he will fit in Nicely at Liverpool but i think 12.5 million is more than enough for him! id sooner see spearing go on loan than shelvey though! Liverpool need to bring a few players in now as time is ticking and as it currently stands the team is weaker than last season! both Ramirez and Dempsey rumours seem to be fading as well. Gutted i'd have really liked to see Gaston ramirez playing at Anfield next season. Still time left yet for a few suprises so ya never know
ReplyDeleteNot convinced to be honest, he does nothing that our current players can't do!!!
ReplyDeleteWe need quality attack minded midfielders and forwards like James Rodriguez, gaitan, jovetic, muniain, Christian Eriksen, dzagoev, rondon, falcao etc instead of pony over paid dross like downing, henderson, adam, spearing- as well as quality passers of the ball like Allen. If this guy was Brazilian everyone would be licking his boots. He is quality at what he does. Distributing the ball around the pitch, positioning etc.
ReplyDeleteI think John is an awful judge of players if he thinks Henderson is better than Allen did you watch the the games last season Henderson is woeful,
ReplyDeleteWe really need to get a few world class signings in and soon so that the players can gel and learn the way we need to play.
Ramirez would be a fantastic addition, but jkboyd needs to sort his head out if he wants dempsey he is a below average player who wont add much to the squad.
A player we need to look at is Honda, if we want quality and a chance to get back in to champs league he is one that could more than help us do this.
Gano1 are you stupid, he does nothing our current players can't do, he can actually hold the ball and pick out a pass unlike Spearing, and Henderson i agree 12.5m is steap watch the game and look at facts and figures before you comment you wolly
ReplyDeleteBefore calling people stupid check your spelling............LOL!!
ReplyDeleteI'll agree Honda is a good player but how would he fit into the Prem? when a player isnt used to the prem it can be a risk! for example shevchenko at Chelsea?? the thing with Dempsey is he's a proven Prem player with a good eye for goal and he isnt to expensive! on the bad side though he isnt the youngest ov players! my ideal signing and realistic signing would be gaston ramirez. As much as i think Dempsey is ok though id sooner see liverpool go for Sturridge
ReplyDeleteRamirez is lazy and one paced, which is why no top clubs have touched him!!!
ReplyDeletePeople want world class players to come to Liverpool, dream on. Hardly coming to play in the Europa League are they?, get a grip people.
ReplyDeleteI agree taking a player from overseas is always a risk, but surely you agree some of our best players have been from abroad i.e Alonso, Saurez, Skrtle so i think a player with his quality would be a risk worth taking, and also it would tap in to the asian market for shirt sales and merchandise.
ReplyDeleteI agree demsey is proven him self in the prem but at a lower league team same as Carroll, Downing and Adam and look how they have failed. but o well,
Sturridge would be a fantastic shout as well as sinclair. would improve our squad.
He is hardly lazy, and even if he is one paced he is young and under the management of BR i feel he would shine. he is alot better than what we currently have to offer.
ReplyDeleteAgree i cant see Liverpool attracting world class players now! Allen and Dempsey though are both decent players playing for Fulham and Swansea? so Liverpool is a good step up. maybe you have seen more ov ramirez than i have but what i've seen ov him he looks a decent player
ReplyDeleteThis is another Hodgson type move, he brought Koncheski and his mother (what a disaster). Now we have Rodgers bringing in his favourite son Alan, I see another disaster on the horizon.
ReplyDeleteIts not just playing in the Europa League though is it its playing in the Premier League the best league around for one of the most decorated clubs of all time who are under a relativly new ownership. so forget about only playing in the europa league and think off the bigger picture.
ReplyDeleteI wish LFC would stop dragging thier feet, over these potential incoming players. Joe Allen would be a missing piece of the gigsaw, and Gaston Ramirez, would also be part of the last 3 missing pieces, imo with just 1more piece Hopefully Demba Ba, and that would leave us with the complete gigsaw for this coming season, and then we will be on our way back up the prem, so stop all these cat and mouse tactics, put realistic offers in and bring these players in now, it should`nt be this difficult to conclude these transfers? just do it before we miss out, once again too the likes of Spurs? come on LFC make us the team that every club fears once again. RedMan4Life.
ReplyDeleteAdam, Downing, Henderson and Carroll were all proven premier league performers with the stats to back them up before they came to Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteJohn, Allen is far from rubbish and is defiantly not average. He will be a top player.
ReplyDelete"A good step up" for goodness sake its fulham to Liverpool is a huge step up and a step that people like dempsey find difficult to handle with all of the pressure of pulling the famous shirt on.
ReplyDeleteI thought Fulham were in the Prem???
ReplyDeleteGet rid of Kuyt, Maxi, Aquilani and Aurelio, now bring in Messi and Ronaldo on-loan......................LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteDemba Ba get really he has had one good season i wish people would just get off the band wagon, he is if lucky an average player we need to look for better quality.
ReplyDeletefair point. Ok so it doesnt always work out as planned! ha. I've got a good feeling about Carroll and Downing this season. (That could just be wishful thinking though!!)
ReplyDeleteWell done Gano spotting another one off my Typos at least your good at one thing because your awful at analysing players that would suit and merti wearing the liverpool shirt.
ReplyDeleteFULHAM PLAY IN THE PREM!!!!!!!! WHAT FOOTBALL DO YOU WATCH HAHAHA
ReplyDeleteAndy, you will probably be banned when Jaimie reds these posts. He does not like insulting language and name calling. We are all entitled to our opinion without others being disrespectful because they don't agree. I personally don't think Joe Alan would be worth the £15M that Swansea want, we'd be better trying to get Alonso back.
ReplyDeleteGet really????
ReplyDeleteEasy there Sir.
ReplyDeleteI meant (reads) I need a new keyboard that doesn't stick.
ReplyDeleteWally is hardly an insult and calling someones opinion stupid is my opinion and like you said we are all entitled to our own. I agree witht eh alonso part would be a fantastic signing.
ReplyDeleteOr just Bring in Allen, Ramirez and Sinclair come on lets be a little bit realistic.
ReplyDeleteI thought you was just making fun ov Andy's spelling! ha would be nice Bill to get Alonso back but he's playing in his home country for a top club who dominated the league last season even Barca! i just cant see it happening! hope i'm wrong though
ReplyDeleteAllen can pass and the stats say that they also say he is not a real creative player i would give him a miss and spend the dough on wide players.
ReplyDeleteYou are Dyslexic son, go and look it up!!!
ReplyDeleteGood feeling about Carroll, That good feeling as because he is leaving and we are getting Benzima on loan :)
ReplyDeleteTotally agree!!!
ReplyDeleteNah Gano not Dyslexic, just Typing fast and not proof reading what i have put before posting so focus on the conversation and not peoples spelling mistakes, if this is all you can come up with then i feel sorry for you.
ReplyDeleteSo People think we should stop looking at CM and start looking at wide men, Who would be everyones Realistic choice for our wingers?
ReplyDeleteAndy and Gano come on now chaps stop point scoring like a pair ov girls! we are all Liverpool fans and all entitle to opinions! haha
ReplyDeleteIt is an insult. Please do not belittle the views of other posters. Disagree vociferously by all means, but please do so in a civil manner. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteyou have 0 clue. allens left leg is worth more than henderson and shelvey put together. you'll be eating your words in a few weeks time.
ReplyDeleteOk fair enough, is calling me Dyslexic not an insult also? and to be fair i did not call him stupid i asked if he was. :)
ReplyDeleteyeah but allen has that X factor, plus he's got a lot of bottle and never stops working for the team. he will be a hit in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteSorry Boss
ReplyDeletei'll behave
ReplyDeleteyou can't compare Dempsey to Allen,we did nt fail last season because of a midfielder,we had lots of chances that couldn't be converted...and i don't think there is a magic Allen can perform that Dempsey can't....look at how many goals he scored last season, incredulous!!we need players with big eyes for goal because we have good midfielders who simply needs fine tuning
ReplyDeleteRowanuk come on we are on about football not signing so i dont think he has the X factor i think he a fantastic eye for passing but not sure on his melodies lol
ReplyDeleteRather a half paced Ramirez than a full paced Adam.
ReplyDeleteWhy does it take so freakin long for us to sign players? I`m sick of reading all these rumours about players being linked to us which never materialise. Theres only 2 explanation for this lack of transfer activity so far:
ReplyDelete1. The owners are being stingy this time which is understandable to some extent. As the saying goes "once bitten twice shy!". Last season FSG trusted kenny Dalglish by offering him a gross transfer kitty of over 100 million pounds but they did not get anything in return for their investment as the below par pathetic excuses for a footballer that Kenny bought contibuted close to nothing which saw us finish a pathetic 8th in the league with statistics worse than any other previous manager in charge for the last 20 years.
2. Brendan Rodgers is just all talk and no trousers. He demanded absolute power over everything and categorically refused to even consider working alongside a director of football pretending to know more than everyone else. Here we are now a couple of weeks prior to the beginning of the new season and only an average squad player bought while 3 good though not excellent players has been sold. Brendan Rodgers in fact aint got a clue about the kind of players that are expected to be seen by us the fans in the red jersey. Lacking any originality whatsoever in his scouting, he is just looking for players he has worked with before namely borini, sigurdsson, allen, sinclair, devries and now williams the last one being linked to us. This may also explains why he kept joe cole but offloaded aquilani despite everyone of us knowing who is the better one of the two. Now as time is running out due to our new managers inability to seal deals fast like every other manager in the league has done by now, he is considering taking loanees to our club maybe trying to plug some holes in the team so that it does not fall short of the minimum amount of players needed!
I was sceptical at first with the appointment of Brendan due to his non impressive CV but decided to gave him the benifit of the doubt due his accomplishments with the newly promoted swansea who played attractive football on par with the best of europe. However now with each day passing I`m getting more and more pissed off with him and actually starting to believe that his "exploits" with swansea was maybe just a fluke like when roy hodgson came after a guiding fulham to their highest position in their entire history couple with a final in the europa league. By the way things are going in the club, the few star players that still remain in club is going to leave one by one and average players will come in which will cement our position as a midtable team...God save us!
i just think this FSG isn't the right group to own liverpool....they just seem a project of the previous fellow Americans, thats' why it became very easy to let them buy the club,at the expense of other contenders who sounded great..why do they appoint someone they don't trust with money?i think these individuals are more business oriented than football oriented...if they can't spend then what vision do they have for liverpool as big club?you cannot build story building with cheep and low quality materials,it will nt last before it collapse
ReplyDeleteAre you related to John Prescott as he had problems listening to other peoples opinions too?
ReplyDeleteandy , we all know it was facts and figures that brought hendo, downing and adam to liverpool. i think we should try somethimg else ..lol big ups Gano 1
ReplyDeleteyeah, defo shudda won more world cups with wales.......
ReplyDeleteI think Liverpool can still attract world class players; at the end of the day it's about the wages you can pay and we can still match most clubs. It's also about being able to offer things that their current club can't; there were some big teams and great players that haven't made it into european competition this year and that's where the focus should be.
ReplyDeleteI also think it's also about taking those players that have the potential to become world class and that's where FSG are hoping to find the best value.
Those people saying we need to finish off deals quickly and just pay the amounts we've been asked for, well, FSG went that way last year. They knew they had probably paid a bit over the odds for downing and co but one of the things that was said to them when they turned up was that fans had been disappointed so many times during the Hicks & Gillette era, and before that even, with transfers not being completed quickly or haggling over the odd million. They were led to believe that it was better to spend a little bit extra to make the fans happy and they would see the value made up by getting back into the Champions League. They took the gamble to make a statement and snap up players quickly and didn't allow us to get involved in any auctions and we know what happened. I don't think they were expecting to have to replace midfielders and strikers again this summer and having had their fingers burnt once will be very keen to get the best possible value this time round.
That doesn't necessarily mean FSG don't have the money or aren't prepared to spend it, and I personally believe they will, but there are so many permutations that predicting what will happen is impossible. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few signings in the next few days. Olympics will finish soon, get the europa league qualifying out the way to guarantee that extra income/draw and suddenly we'll see some movement.
We have to hold onto Agger and Skrtel, that's imperative, but otherwise I'm excited and can't wait to see what happens before the end of the transfer window and next season.
I was hoping that the only British player we would go for is A Johnson(MC). But it looks more average players will join the ones we've got and the new season will b like the last two. And if it doesn't work mr BR than I hope we don't go anywhere near a British mngr as well.
ReplyDeleteThis is Anfield. We may not have Champions League now. But be mindful. It is a priviledge to put the great red shirt of LFC. And they will come.
ReplyDeleteIm being reallistic, and Demba Ba Actually knows were the goal is. What bandwagon you talking about then? I have my own mind, im not a sheep mate, with a buy out clause of just over £7m is a more reallistic than saying we could get better quality? with what money? Im not totally convinced that Borini is going to be a success? but only time will tell, but £11m imo was just a little much too pay, for a player who hasn`t had 1 season in the prem? and would you class him as a "QUALITY" player? maybe you should put a little more thought into your reply. RedMan4Life.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to 'MONEYBALL' folks and this was always the FSG plan for Liverpool, now we see it happening. Reduce your wage bill and bring through young players on less wages, with a sell on value. Cutting Kuyt, Maxi, Aurelio and Aquilani highlights this fact.
ReplyDeleteThe days of big signings are gone which might not be a bad thing, how much have we blown over the past 10 years?. Now we will be using the FSG theory, will it work in football?. Bellamy is probably the next out of the door too, how will that go down?.
We will see plenty of young players being signed along with the odd experienced player, subject to fee's?. Clint Dempsey being an example if the price is right, Liverpool will not be going after big name stars without a sell on value. This is a massive change of direction but one that will need time to work, will we be patient enough as fans???????????
agreed. my prediction liverpool finish 11th.
ReplyDeleteHopefully our new manager will be Laudrup
I guess we should just start calling Joe Allen "the messiah" because of the way Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy talk about him. I sure hope he can leave up to his expectations of Liverpool fans and the manager in his role as the "creator in chief" in central midfield.
ReplyDeleteHas he signed then????????????
ReplyDeleteReally, henderson is better..........maybe at passing to the opposition, do you actually watch the game.........?
ReplyDeleteNot his accomplishments are criticized but his APPEARANCE record .
ReplyDeleteRead what it says before you go bashing someone's statement .
Great potential, be patient.
ReplyDeletefor me rodgers must get allen, and dempsey, ramirez....and butland
ReplyDeletereina must be pushed out as he was not good last season...
butland
kelly skertel agger johnson
dempsey lucas ramirez
downing borini suarez
Honda,?? you must be joking, on yer bike mate.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like FSG had good intentions when they arrived and tried to buy our way back into the top 4. Kenny blew the cash, and now the only way for them to recoup on their investment is to sell off the star players one by one. They've all been linked with a move away over summer, and had price tags slapped on them, rather than new contracts given.
ReplyDeleteNo player is bigger than the club, but we cannot attract players of the calibre of those we're going to sell, so we'll buy budget replacements and slip further down the table.
John W. Henry will get his investment back and LFC will be left in its worst state ever.
Bring back Hicks & Gillette!!! lol
PS. What happend to the £45m (per season) from Warrior Sports and Standard Chartered?! £10m went on Borini, the wage bill has been massively cut, the squad has been weakened, and oh yeah, John W. Henry probably bought a new £35m holiday home! lol
Sharkio, that Demba Ba buy-out clause expired on July 31.
ReplyDeleteWe couldn't even meet Gylfi's wage demands and he'd agreed terms with Swansea!! Spurs offered more and they have a wage cap!!
ReplyDeleteSelling Aurellio, Kuyt, Aqua and Maxi wasn't to improve the squad, it was to reduce the wage bill. We will not be offering decent wages and thus wont be attracting decent players.
Yes, FSG have cash. They have at least £45m from the Warrior Sports and Standard Chartered deals, but don't expect them to reinvest it in the squad anytime soon.
They have a young manager who they can bully and make a scapegoat and are now in a position to sell off star players and replace them with substandard mediocracy, knowing the new manager will take the blame.
You dont pay £15mill for potential, Aldo.
ReplyDeleteHow many assists and goals has he, very few I expect. One commentator during the Olympics or friendlies stated Swansea had the worst record of any Club in completed passes in the final third of the pitch last season, if thats true, its hardly encouraging, is it.?
Where is Gerrard?
ReplyDeleteI couldnt agree more with you. What is our transfer strategy? I can understand why certain players have been moved out but we are replacing them with 'nobodies'
ReplyDeleteThe players that have left had quality, despite certain shortcomings.
Rogers agreed to the job on FSG terms. I have heard Martinez and AVB wanted there own terms and wouldnt take the job without transfer assurances.
I think the picture is getting clearer by the day.
We have a box to box player already in lucas. One of the best returns best we have had from Gerrard was the season Rafa played him on the right. so if we step these two players into these positions and put Allen into dm then the team becomes more attack minded and Allen is in the position to move the ball around the way Brendan wants us to play
ReplyDeleteremember this? i wouldnt listen to a word Giggs has to say ;)
ReplyDelete"His corners alone are worth £10 million" ~ Sir Alex Ferguson on Charlie Adam
Yep, Giggs would be a terrible judge of player. I much prefer your assessment... Tit.
ReplyDeleteAllen has promise though this was the kind of talk that bedded Hendo in. A season later sitting on eighth wondering how far the £20 mil went or the funds used to sign Downing fared and the answer is calamitous management. Mangers that stick their neck out for unproven prospects will be held to the sword by fenway even King Kenny with a carling cup and FA cup runners up medal wasnt spared. So does BR wann really stick his neck out for speculative talent? Borini 10 mil Allen 15? answer: only if he gives them a fighting chance by buying proven talent along side as a back up to hold up the new recruits and himself. The season could be decided for LFC in first three prem league fixtures. WBA, City Arsenal- tough going.
ReplyDeleteHe's not rubbish he quite a decent player BUT not worth 15 mill
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the owners have Liverpool's best interest at heart or if they are just feeding Rodger's interest at heart. What I mean is that Liverpool have not come out and said Agger is not for sale. I don't care if we get 25 million for him, he is crucial to Liverpool approving as a team, how many defenders out there can play as good as Agger? It's not like we can attract "TOP" players from other teams, so why are we letting Man City start a bidding war? Is this all to fund a move for Allen and Dempsey? Downing, Henderson and Carroll all earn big bucks a week, on top of the transfer fees that brought them to the club. And yet Liverpool felt it was necessary to offload Aquilani for peanuts because he's earning as much as them. Add that to the rumours surrounding Bellamy's future as well. All this business behind closed doors, is distancing the fans. What are these corporate suit's doing. I'm not crying over spilt milk, Aquilani is gone now. But we got rid of a player that has played for Roma, AC Milan, Juventus and now Fioretina. Adam has played for Rangers and Blackpool. Is there a conspiracy of downgrading or is it just me.
ReplyDeleteRodgers made it very clear: it wasn't that we couldn't meet Sigurdsson's demands, it's that we refused to because he wasn't worth it. Big difference there. Rodgers made the call on that and it's a good call to make.
ReplyDeleteI think it's the same with other players. We often get caught up with transfer fees as needing to be representative of what a player is worth but so does the salary. The budget always has to include both and the salary can be more significant if you sign a player for 5 years on massive terms. If Kuyt, Maxi and Aquilani were all on wages that significantly outweighed their worth to the team then it's sensible to move them on. Anyway, Maxi wasn't one of those as Rodgers also made it clear that he wanted the player to stay. And really, do you believe FSG are intent on just shoring up resources and making Liverpool into a cut-price team that can't get back into the Champions League? Why would they do that? Where is the logic in it? Why wouldn't they want Liverpool to be as competitive as possible? They provided Dalglish with all the money he asked for and Borini for 12 million was hardly bargain basement. We're spending decent money on decent players, Joe Allen would just be another example. I hardly think 15 million quid and a healthy wage deal is evidence of anyone being cheap or tightening the purse strings.
I can't agree with you. What evidence is there that FSG are being cheap? Look at how much money they gave Dalglish last season and already we've spent plenty on Borini. Allen would take total spending up to nearly 30 million pounds and Rodgers has said we have multiple targets still being worked on. So where is the example of the owners being just businessmen? Do they have to be spending 30 and 40 million on players to convince you that they want to make us a winning team again? Personally I'm glad we're not, we don't want to be in that kind of game where winning the title only comes about because we waste massive amounts of money like City or Chelsea.
ReplyDeleteI agree, we need to know what the strategy is? I would sell the crap but hang on with dear life to quality players because it sure looks like we wont be attracting any 'better' players in the near future.
ReplyDeleteAllen is tidy and effective but from what I have seen his passes are mainly sidewards, which is fine as long as it allows other midfielders to venture forward. But £15M after getting our fingers burnt with Downing, Carroll, Hendo and Adam is way too much. We have already lost quality players but was this just to reduce the wage bill?
The viscious circle that is being created is that we wont rise above 6th? which means we will lose our better players who want to win trophies and also we wont have the revenue or status to attract the best players!
I don't think they have needed someone like Allen at all for years, they got someone similar in Carrick who has annoyingly been a key part of a side that has reached 3 CL finals and won 3 or 4 league titles. I think they have lacked a more aggressive defensive midfielder (Javi Martinez, Song, Mvila, etc, especially with Fletcher's career in danger) and/or a more attack-minded central midfielder (Modric, etc, with Scholes being on his last legs and playing deeper & deeper as each season goes by). Not a passive deep lying midfielder (not like the types of Allen, Carrick and Xabi) as the likes of Scholes and Carrick have done that role fine for them. I doubt Giggs alone has that much say about transfers at Manure anyway.
ReplyDeleteWe could meet his demands but Rodgers knew what he had agreed to at Swansea and wasn't prepared to up that amount out of principle. Fair enough i say if all he is intrested in is money then let him do one.
ReplyDeleteHollway and Old Red Nosed stitched Dalglish up good style when they 'sold' him charlie Adams. This time it's Giggs and Laudrup trying a similar stunt.
ReplyDeleteMy personal opinion is that he is not worth 10mill never mind 15 mil but with any player that Liverpool go in for it's always going to be inflated. Thats the price this football club pays,no club wants to be embarrassed by Liverpool obtaining a player cheaply and him going on to greatness. With regards to his stats at Swansea you would feel with better players around him he would improve further. Do you rember that spaniard stats before we signed him from athletico?
ReplyDelete
