'What is he doing?!' - Newcastle hero slams Rodgers' 'baffling' behaviour. Fair?

Former Newcastle star Mickey Quinn has jumped to the defence of beleaguered Reds flop Andy Carroll, accusing Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers of taking the 'wrong stance' over the striker's future.

In an interview with the Newcastle Chronicle, Quinn blasted Rodgers for not giving Carroll a proper chance under the new regime, and suggested the Liverpool fans may also be in the dark over why Rodgers seemingly wants to get rid of the 35m man. He observed:

"I don’t know why Brendan Rodgers has taken the stance he has on Carroll. For some reason he doesn’t seem to want him. What is he doing?

"It’s hard when a player doesn’t really get a chance from the word go when a new manager comes in. Usually everybody gets their chance under a new manager, but that hasn’t been the case for Carroll.

"He had a good Euros for England, and he had a good end to the season with Liverpool. It is totally baffling. As a Liverpool follower I’d just like to know what Brendan Rodgers is doing".

Quinn is entitled to his view, but many fair-minded Liverpool fans (i.e. those who always prioritise the club's development over the individual) understand *exactly* why Rodgers doesn't want Carroll. For Quinn's benefit, I will outline several compelling reasons why Carroll needs to go, and I'll also address a couple of his points:

* Only 6 league goals in 42 games (1 every 7 games/1 every 516 mins)

* 5.2% conversion rate (Lowest of any striker in the PL)

* Passing accuracy in opposition half: 57% (Lowest in LFC's squad by a long way)

* Overall Shooting accuracy: 35%

* Only 64% of aerial duels won, despite his height + alleged ability in the air.

These five irrefutable facts alone are enough to hammer the nails into Carroll's Anfield coffin. As for Quinn's other points:

* Carroll had a good Euros? He played ONE full game. Yes, he scored a good goal, but that was his only positive contribution for the entire tournament. Carroll was anonymous the rest of the time.

* Yes, Carroll had a good three weeks at the end of the season, but since when does one good spell define an entire season? What about the other 9 months?

Are we to believe that all those months of abject underperformance should be forgotten just because Carroll decided to put some effort in at the eleventh hour in order to secure an England place for Euro 2012?!

No further analysis of Carroll is needed: he is not good enough to fit into a tactically/technically proficient team built around constant possession of the ball. End of story

  1. Shows the British mentality towards football, out of date and out of touch. Football has moved on since his day of lumping it forward to the big man. He didn't have a good euros, he scored a good goal but otherwise rubbish. One dimensional footballer.

I hope he stays,I really think hour will be here for the whole season. Breden backed him and said he had unfair cristism and said he can adapt to his style of play.

  5. As a Geordie I think ex players etc need to keep their noses out of LFC business. The majority of toon fans would agree with this. Aren't we all sick of hearing about Carroll? If you do be shut, give him a haircut before he goes

  6. I don't see the harm in giving him a chance unless we already have a replacement lined up. As far as I can see we are linked with midfielders, AMC, Wingers, Defenders but no solid link to a front man.

If Rodgers can coach him in his style of football then why not? He cannot have as bad a 3/4 of a season as he did last year and if he does perform decent enough we may see his value rise if Rodgers really doesn't want him come january/next summer.

It wasn't just Carroll whose chance conversion was awful last season, outside of Maxi, Gerrard and Suarez we had no real goal threat. Rather than attribute it to Carroll, Dalglish tactics might be to blame since the entire squad struggled to convert and often Carroll was left completely isolated up front with no one to pass to/head the ball onto which lowers his pass completion.

His chance conversion (18%) at Newcastle in his half season was one of the reasons we bought him, Newcastle boast a very high chance conversion especially now despite creating less chance than us (according to epl index) So tactics seem to be the issue rather than the players inability to score.

His defensive ability under Dalglish was greatly improved though, up 19% to 81% so it seems he might fit under a high pressing win the ball back front 3. It's down to Rodgers though, I expect he'll look at Carroll in the next pre season game and in training and see whether he really can fit into his playing style.

  7. I love the scousers like. Always back your players, never get on their backs......hahaha. I think the word deluded best describes you. I can guarantee you now that by Xmas you will be slagging of Brendan. Deep down if you are totally honest with yourselves you know he's a poor manager. I am an NUFC fan and deep down I know Pardew is a poor manager. Had a good season last year but everyone expects reality to set in this year. As a club and a group of fans you need to take a step back and realise that King Kenny has destroyed your squad, much as he did to us. It will take time to get over him. It took us 5 years. I don't think Brendan is the man to do it. Sorry

  8. I don't know I was pretty pissed as soon as we got Hodgson, and then when he signed Poulsen, Konchesky and Jovanovic it made it worse.

I think Brendans approach is fresh, and I don't think any fan is realistically expecting instant success just an improvement upon last season in the league.

Pardew might not be the best manager tactically, but he's either got some very good scouts or has a eye for great players than don't break the bank.

  9. Yeah, but it's Mickey Quinn in fairness, so who gives a f**k either way?

  10. Oh, and it's only Newcastle too, so seriously - who gives even half a bollocky f**k? It's not like the Geordies know anything about football. They're like amusing, scruffy children.

  11. Rodgers has actually defended Carroll? he was interviewed and said he thought it was unfair that people are saying he cant adapt to his style? He also said he would consider offers for any of his players so it's hardly picking at Big Andy is it? Seems to me Newcastle just want this guy back? why? it's not like Newcastle had a bad season is it?  and both there strikers are settled and playing well? I actually cant see Carroll going anywhere and i think he will even do ok next season. As for Liverpool fans being deluded? i prefer to call it ambitious. look at last season Liverpool still managed some silverware ha go brush the cob webs of Newcastles Trophy cabinet

  12. Micky Quinn, the original half season wonder. Of course he'll back a flop. Bottom line is that the move would be good for us and good for Carroll. If Ibrahimovic couldn't fit in at Barca Carroll won't fit in under Rodgers. No acrimony, let's just move on.

  13. LFC wont outplay Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal & Tottenham but all those teams cannot stop Andy Carroll if he plays to his potential on any given day - Your argument is flawed looking at stats only.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Does anyone else not think Liverpool want to sell and Newcastle are merely stirring up interest due to having a large sell on percentage fee slapped on from when he went to Liverpool?

    ReplyDelete
  15. andy is a promising player, but the move, the fee, the expectation is/was too much for him over the last 18 months. The press hound him. Fans at all grounds he played in, jeering him. Football is definitely a confidence sport and he didn't have much putting these things in context.
On his day, he can produce the goods, its just about consistency. To be fair to andy lfc bought the wrong type of striker. Thats not Andy's fault, but he has taken a long time to adjust. Hopefully in my opinion he gets an opportunity to prove himself as we are in transition anyway this season. Steady progression is what the owners now want, so I can't see any harm in trying to coach andy in the new system. We should have bought an established striker to pick up the mantle left by Torres. Fortunately the person/people who were in control of the purchases of carroll/downing/henderson/adam are no longer at LFC, so hopefully we can find some gems like newcastle have done as we can't attract the top bracket of players.

  26. I totally disagree Jaimie, Brendans giving every other player a chance, despite statistics etc, so why shouldnt Andy Carroll get one? I dont care if he sells him and he flops or if we win the league i still think that when a new manager comes in, with the belief that Brendan has in his own abolities, you would like to believe he would assess Carroll and maybe try and improve him or sell him. But at LEAST watch him train. Theres been many a player who a manager change has breathed new life into, why not Carroll?

    ReplyDelete
  27. hahaha, some canny funny comments on here like :D
Carroll is a very good footballer, unfortunately for Liverpool he played under master tactician KD last season. If you do keep him (which I think you will, cos nobody will offer you £20m for him) I think he'll have a very good 2012-13 season with you.

  39. I think it would be foolish to sell Carroll - as a Toon fan I would love it (love it) if he came back. He did have a good Euros - as well as the whole game he played he came on in the final match and won everything in the air. I cannot name a better header of a ball, and while he's not sophisticated with his feet he can get a strong shot off with either foot. And sometimes you just need a big lad playing like a battering ram up front.

    He shoots
    He scores
    He'll break your f***ing jaw
    Andy Carroll
    Andy Carroll

    ReplyDelete
  40. The one thing that baffles me about people defending Andy Carroll is the way they always talk about "time." Oh he needs "time." Only a matter of "time." In "time" he will make good you'll see. My question is this how much time does he actually need to find himself? Does he need another whole season? Does he need till January? How much time does a player who only offensive threat has been heading the ball need?

I would also like someone to tell me what makes Andy more special that he needs this time when everybody was ready to throw Alberto Aquilani to the wolves ? He wasn't given a chance by Kenny. If fact Kenny had just came in and decided that his players whom he brought in would always get preferential treatment over the other players who were already here. This is why no matter how many Maxi scored he was destined to sit on the bench for most games.
Kenny came in and did not look twice at Aquilani or Raul Meurellis because he had his own players in mind. This is almost no difference than what Rodgers is doing . Before taking the job Rodgers had made the decision of the player he wanted as his main striker and now he has got him.

Aquilani was loaned out and has now come back , and it seems like his style of play is more agreeable to Rodgers than it was to Kenny. With the different philosophies of the different coaches you see different types of players getting more opportunity to play with different coaches.

The harsh reality is that Andy may not actually be the type of player that Rodgers is crazy about. Rodgers not even spending two weeks on the job came out and made a comment to all the media that he was prepared to move Andy out on loan or simply sell him outright. This was even before he had a practice session with him. He did nothing different from what Kenny Daglish did with Aquilani or Meurellis. Coaches have their favorites and Andy is not a favorite of Brendon Rogders.

If the manager feels the way he does about Carroll no amount of time will be enough for Andy to be really accepted back into the fold. Right now he is seen as the weakest link in our armor by the manager himself.

Personally i don't care if he stays or goes , this is simply an opinion.

  42. You can't compare Newcastle to Liverpool, even if you finished above them last season. You were relegated not to long ago for godness sake, now you have the front to slate a superior team. The last cup you won was in 1955, that is embarrising. Your currently a feeder club for everyone else, and everyone was shocked at how well you did last season. If others are shocked that you did that well that means your a shit club that did well. As simple as that. I've been to Newcastle games with my step bro who goes to uni there and all I heard was 'Fucking hell man' and I mean literally. I've been to anfield matches and it is far superios atmosphere especially on European nights. Commentators always mention the atmosphere at anfield, I've yet to here the same about your club. This coming from an arsenal fan lol....

We also beat chelsea manu ect..and finished above yous which is what will happen this coming season. Face it you are the new Newcastle onto ur 3rd manager in two seasons a squad full of shite players and a deluded fan base....

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not sure how Dalglish's tactics can be blamed for a player missing chances. Its the player that shoots, not the manager. It was simply poor finishing from the likes of Suarez and Carroll last season, very little to do with Dalglish in relation to the actual conversion of chances. What do you want to Dalgish to do? Hold their hand whilst they shoot?

I would argue that Carroll's limited hold up play was just as much to blame for any lowering of his pass completion stats as he has quite a mediocre touch. He had plenty support at times with Suarez and Stevie G. One could argue the pathetic immobility of Carroll in attacking the box and getting on the end of crosses lowered Downing's cross completion. Swings and roundabouts. Newcastle play a different style now to the one they used with Carroll, back then it was playing it direct to the aerial duo of Carroll-Ameobi, he likes the direct style to date in his career. Shouldn't be too obsessed with stats as they can be twisted quite easily, like you have done in your subjective defending of Carroll.

    ReplyDelete
  65. You've just demonstrated my point though, under different tactics Carroll can flourish, as can Suarez as he did at Ajax and is doing with Uruguay.

I'm not saying Brendan Rogers style suits Carroll, far from it. But is it not worth giving him that chance? It wasn't just Carroll and Suarez that had poor chance conversion, it was everyone Kuyt (who under Dalglish the previous season was doing well), Adam, Hendo so there must have been something wrong.

And Carroll did look completely isolated at times, but showed at the end of the season that maybe he can fit into the Liverpool passing style, even if it was a push for the euros. I'd much rather get rid of Downing than Carroll. Downing isn't young, doesn't like taking defenders on and also boasted no league goals and his assists while also the fault of the strikers in part is also Downing's fault but he doesn't seem to be taking the flack Carroll is.

I find it hard to believe that almost everyone's chance conversion rate in our squad is so low because they all cannot finish. If it was just Carroll that wasn't converting I'd accept it, but it was everyone.

  68. My point is that you have used stats in a subjective manner to hype up Carroll to nauseating and cringing levels, which is fair enough but those stats can be twisted the other way too. Ergo, your stats-based argument isn't a conclusive or fair one, but a flawed argument as you simply twisted the stats to defend the oaf that is Carroll.

Yes, Carroll can flourish under different tactics....a direct, aggressive and aerial game as that is the only style of play to date that he has truly showed some form. There is nothing in that to illustrate that he would fit into Rodgers' style. So no, I haven't done anything positive for your point in relation to that, in terms of how I meant it but than again, you might twist it eh. Eh? Where were you? Downing took plenty of flak (favourite one was how Tim Howard had more goals/assist in the league) during the course of the season and basically now no one cares about him as its no fun or newsworthy any more. Because of Newcastle and West Ham's low offers and how it illustrates how shit he was last season, its Carroll's turn now to take some flak.

There must have been something wrong? What? Like Dalglish told them to intentionally miss chances as that was a part of his tactics? Eh? Utter mind boggling logic. At the end of the day, when a player shoots and misses, it is his fault, end of. To suggest it is the manager's fault for players missing simple chances is just laughable and bemusing. I'll leave it there as what your getting at is just too ridiculous to continue, in my view, and I'm not exactly a staunch defender of Dalglish II to say the least on this forum, so that is saying something! Definitely agree to disagree. Cheerio.

    ReplyDelete
  69. My point was that you have used stats in a subjective manner to defend Carroll to nauseating and cringing levels, which is fair enough but it can be twisted the the other way too. If you can't accept that, than that is strange to say the least. Stats aren't the holy grail when getting a point across, as you have illustrated with your flawed argument. You have put forward argument that isn't conclusive or fair, but a flawed one.

Yes, Carroll can flourish......in a direct, aerial and aggressive game. Nothing like the tactics that Rodgers would probably use. Nothing like the tactics that a club aspiring to be at least in the top 4 would use regularly. So I demonstrated that he would flourish in a style that isn't familiar to Rodgers' style....if that was your point, great. Yippee, Suarez did the business in the mighty Dutch league(!) All that proves is Suarez did the business in a inferior league. Great. I don't really see international level as a fair comparison as many a player has succeeded at that level, yet done bugger in a top league and the other way round. Bit of a odd benchmark, international level, in certain contexts.

Eh? Where were you? Downing got plenty of flak last season. Butt of plenty of jokes such as the Tim Howard one. Got slated plenty during the season. Now no one cares as his stock is that low now. Now it is Carroll's turn, with the low offers come in for him and how it illustrates how low his stock has gone after a shit season. He deserves it, instead of apologists making nauseating excuses for him.

I'm surprised you haven't conjured up any stats or chalkboard for how isolated Carroll was(!)

The likes of Adam and Hendo hardly have a great reputation of scoring goals in PL. Adam scored quite a few penalties for Blackpool as well as free kicks. At Liverpool, he wasn't the main penalty taker, nor the main free kick taker.

Adam, Carroll, Henderson and Downing. Bought from mid-table or lower sides and showed mid-table form last season for Liverpool. Hardly surprising their form as after all, we finished.....mid-table. Liverpool is a totally different animal to be a part of. Different expectations, different environment, different playing field. I'll criticise Dalglish for wasting money, which I have done aplenty but I won't criticise him for someone else's bad finishing, as Dalglish isn't the one that missed the simple chances last season. If you buy mid-table players or young players, there is a good chance you will get mid-table form or inconsistent form from the young players.

Everything about Kuyt's game last season was off. He simply wasn't in good form, no amount of tactics will hide that.

Suarez has flattered to deceive. Don't know why everyone has him up on a pedestal so soon, when he has proven bugger all outside of Holland and for Uruguay. The hype he gets by my fellow LFC fans is mad sometimes, in my view, as his finishing has been atrocious at times in a Liverpool shirt. He is more closer to being the next Afonso Alves or Kezman, instead of the next Van Nistelrooy or Van Basten, in relation to Dutch League exploits. Beyond his dribbling and taking on players, I don't see what the fuss is.

There must be something wrong? Eh? Dalglish deliberate set up tactics so that players would miss simple chances? Told them to deliberately miss as part of his tactical masterplan? Oh Luis, please miss simple chances as I think it will do us good(!) At the end of the day, when a player misses a simple chance, it is his fault as he is the one that shoots. Not the manager, not tactics. Considering what a joke I find it that someone can excuse poor finishing because of poor tactics, I'll leave it there as I find it a ridiculous excuse. That is saying something, as I am hardly a fan of Dalglish II. Definitely agree to disagree. Cheerio.

  70. Any  manager's tactics will have an impact on the performances of players besides the players' own skills, temperament, etc, etc. I don't think we should be too caught up with stats. It only tells one part of the story.

When a team is on winning streak, all stats looks good. When losing, the stats are bad no matter which way you look at it. At Newcastle, most plays were built around him and they play a lot of aerial balls. At Liverpool, most plays were on the ground in line with the pass and move strategy. Obviously, Carroll struggled under this playing style. Same goes for Torres at Chelsea, too where he is still struggling to score consistently.

Even confusing manager's tactics and failure to communicate tactics clearly to players will affect players' performances. I am not in a position to say whether Kenny committed any of these blunders or if he is tactically shallow, but he certainly helped stabilize the club in the interim. Now with Brendan, things looked positive and we can only hope the results shows on the pitch.

As I have always maintained, Carroll is a talent when in a team with a playing style that suits him. Sure, he has his weaknesses. Realistically, I don't think he fits into Brendan's style of play.

Brendan knows that and he has the guts to decide on letting him go rather than delaying the young man's progress in his football career. He probably knows that giving Carroll a fresh start and another chance might not lead him anywhere. He's the manager and we will have to trust him on this. He is trying to move the club forward based on his playing philosophy and we should let him get on with his job and support him.

  71. Pardew, a poor manager? He is a good manager. Even with Carroll and Enrique's departure, the took Newcastle to another level. Brendan is refreshing and he will do well for Liverpool.

  72. You know i wish this would all stop personally i would love for him to stay and show he's got the ##### to prove everyone wrong , or just sell him and get it over with and buy Cavani

  73. I don't get it? Are you a football fan or a statistician? You can't look at stats when he was off form, unfit and injured half the time. You look at potential, current form, and impact when he is fit and motivated. Remember what he did to Manu and Chelsea? Fitness and confidence = job of manager. Maybe Dalglish was also to blame for his poor form? Too much pressure on his 35 million pound striker? Wrong tactics and/or instructions? Wrong supporting players? I truly believe Rodgers should give him one season to prove himself. What's the worst that could happen?
