'We've spoken' - Rodgers confirms LFC transfer talks over £15m star...

Liverpool's interest in Swansea City midfielder Joe Allen is now well established, and last night, the Swans released a statement slamming the Reds for allegedly ignoring the no-transfer agreement between the two clubs. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has responded to that statement today, hinting that negotiations for Allen are ongoing.

In a brief statement a couple of hours ago, Rodgers confirmed:

"We’ve spoken with Swansea.

"I have a brilliant relationship with Huw Jenkins and we’ve had a private conversation that will remain private.

"There’s obviously been a lot of speculation off the back of that and unfortunately a lot of it is wrong.

"Joe is a very talented player but I don’t want to say any more about that one".

To be honest, Swansea's crocodile tears over Allen seem a little insincere, especially since their own manager, Michael Laudrup, suggested last week that a big offer could tempt the club to sell:

"I don’t know about the agreement [between Swansea and Liverpool] but if it comes to more then I am sure I will talk to the chairman about it.

"I haven’t heard anything from Liverpool, but it's a part of football to accept sometimes that people leave when the an offer is too big. You have to deal with it, talk to the player and see what he wants.

"I want him [Allen] to stay here because I think he is very important for the team, but we will have to deal with that if it becomes something more"

  1. We do not need this guy in mid-field. All that this seems to say is that Rodgers is rather Narrow-blinkered when it comes to buying. He is only interested in guys who have played for him before. We are soon to be transmogrified into Swansea it would seem. We have NO depth in attack and nobody seems bothered about it. It appears the one buy of Boroni will solve all!

  3. rdgers the best advies am giving u is to get more strikers

  4. yeah totally agree....

  5. Agreed Jay,

I can't believe our lack of signing in attack thus far. We are so overstocked in midfield its unbelieavable! We've lost Kuyt and Maxi and replaced one with Borini and that's it! Allen is a good player but what is he going to bring better than what we've got? Okay ahead of Adam and Spearo (and prob Hendo) but when the 1st is fit I don't see any of them getting in ahead of Ste, Lucus, Cole and Aquaman.

Of course if he joins I'll support him but it does seem a bit baffling to me. YNWA

  6. agreed JK especially after Jenkins revealed there where several offers for Joe Allen. BR said that his agreement was not to chase Swansea players however he asked to be kept informed if other clubs made offers that were being considered. I think Brendon Rogers has stuck to his agreement. Swansea are obviously trying to save face.
As for the player himself he is to me just another journeyman average midfield player, we have plenty of them already. What we need is a Souness, McDermott or young Gerrard. Not another Adams, Henderson or Downing.

  7. Rogers wants to dominate the midfield, have you lot seen Allans pass completion record compared to our current players? Doesn't look like it. To dominate the centre of the park you need to be able to pass accurately under pressure, and Allan is FAR better than any of our current players at doing that.

Jesus doesn't anyone actually know the mechanics of a quality central midfield 3. Remember Gerrard Masch and Xabi, how about Basquez Xavi and iniesta. We already have 2 of a quality midfield in Gerrard and Lucas, now Allan will fill the 3rd position, a player who is good defensively, a good passer and who scores and assists. None of the players we have now can fill that position. None are good enough defensively and all are poor passers, the odd fancy flick on or cracking long pass doesn't make for a good passer.

  8. If i was brendan i would do the same. Making the jump from mid table to lower european level isnt so massive. So why not try to get 1 or 2 players that you KNOW will work with your system and you believe are good enough to step up a notch.

  9. Aquaman and Cole have done very little good in a Liverpool shirt, to illustrate such faith and trust in them, in my view.

  10. You'd rather Aqualani to Allen? No offence but you're completely clueless!!! The sooner he leaves the better! Allen would be much better suited!

  11. For a so-called journeyman (if we're talking the British perception of journeyman here, i.e., a player who moves clubs a lot), he has done well to stay at one club (Wrexham loan aside) for so long!

Its quite vague at the moment, the ins and outs of this 'written agreement' to the public, so who knows who is in the right or wrong here.

  12. I rate Allen but like Xabi, he doesn't get many assists or goals. Though that isn't necessarily a criticism, considering the roles they play

    ReplyDelete
  13. Agreed. Maybe its because Allen hasnt got a fancy foreign sounding name? I'm sure he was the 7th best passer in Europe last season too, no Liverpool lads up there.

I'm not sure about Allen based on the fact we have Shelvey and Aquilani.
I'd rather see us shift ADAM,DOWNING & CARROLL first.

BTW there is an Interview with Aquilani which will be on the BBC website soon.
So it seems that Roy and Dalglish FORCED Aquilani OUT ON LOAN and he never wanted to leave nor did he say his family couldn't settle in Liverpool.
I for one and GLAD that it looks like this guy is FINALLY getting a chance and frankly SHAME ON HODGSON & DALGLISH for how they could put Poulsen, Spearing & Adam ahead of this guy.
I am starting to really get what Rogers is trying to do with his players.
All the players will run through BRICK WALLS for him from his previous clubs, as well as nothing but praise.

  16. Really troubling that Brenden Rodgers's new system may depend heavily on his ability to recruit key players who have worked with him in the past. I understand he wants to be cautious and work with what he knows. We have seen him pursue Siggurdson who was onloan at Swansea and therefore not a Swansea player and then Borini. He is now after Joe Allen, but has apparently violated an agreement with Swansea not to tap the club up for any of his  previous players from last season for a whole year. It doesn't look good for Rodgers. I think if he is to really succeed he has to break out of his comfort zone and pursue players that he has no previous working history with . There are a lot of talents whom are available that can come in be successful with Rodgers's new system. The hard part for him will just be identifying them. I hope he can really utilize the Liverpool scouts and allow them to actually earn their pay.

  17. giving the new manager a chance then are you?

  18. i heard aquilani hopped on the roma bus after the match last night.

    ReplyDelete
  19. journeyman?
    not really.

    ReplyDelete
  20. read that article.
hodgson thought it'd be better to  play poulsen over aquilani.
says it all about him really.

    ReplyDelete
  21. it's not really a comfort zone.
he's merely wanting to use players who are already aware of his style of football and in allen it's a player who was central to using that style successfully.

  22. Liverpool a poor mans Swansea .

Norbert, that was a really poor attempt to get a dig in or create some sort of controversy you'll have to do a lot better than that

  24. Have you ever seen Aquilani play? I have not seen Allen so I am not going to say anything about that. I have seen Aquilani and he is class (although unfortunately injury prone) ...

    ReplyDelete
  25. You might be right about Cole, however Aquilani has played well every time he had the opportunity in his first year with Rafa.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I know little about Allen, however I did think he was more of an Alonso as opposed to a Shelvey or Aquilani kind of player ...

    ReplyDelete
  27. gaston ramirez also a good signing. Dunno Lfc will sign him or not. But it seem tht our midfielder too much. If allen come, should be other will out. sell Downing & spearing, buy in adam johnson & ramirez. We nid L & R Wing. Push Sterling & Suso into first team. Shelvey will be shine in Brendon Squad.

  28. No point spending on more strikers and not enough midfielders to link up defence and attack. Strikers can't score if there are no service from the midfielders. For the time being, beefing up the midfield department seems sensible.

    ReplyDelete
  29. And Liverpool's mid field is made up by English players last year.

    ReplyDelete
  30. No, it just tells us a lot of your warped judgement.

  31. AA. will come good. Why look elsewhere when we have AA. Last year this time Kenny said he was a true professional. But KD stuck with his flops at the expense of AA. among others.

Yes. I saw him @ juventus,ac milan and last night. The guy vision is brillant..can pass with his right or left foot. Has a good shot and can pass and move. He suited to are new style. Watch his game then you will see your the clueless person.

  33. 9 league games he started in that season, hardly a substantial amount to base one undying faith and trust in,  in my view.

    ReplyDelete
  34. ok fair enough but why is Rodgers going for Swans players or former Swansea loan players i rest my case a poor mans Swansea city .

    ReplyDelete
  35. okay hes just s.h.i.t.e and our sights should be set higher i should have called him very average not jouneyman my mistake

    ReplyDelete
  36. I dont get your point mate? BTW Adam is Scottish. And Allen is Welsh too. Im on about fans favouring foreign rather then tried and tested PL players who are in the top ten in europe.

    ReplyDelete
  37. dont get my hopes up

    ReplyDelete
  38.  good reply, you really engaged with the debate didn't you?

    ReplyDelete
  39. The best advice I'm giving you is to spell correctly

    ReplyDelete
  40. We have Suso, Pacheco, Sterling, Morgan, all in the youth ranks and that are on the fringes of the senior squad, they deserve a chance to play under Rodgers. Give the youngsters a go, that is one of the reasons that has made Barcelona so successful and dare I say Man Utd so successful as well, bringing youth up through the ranks into the first team. We have the talent, now we need to start implementing them

    ReplyDelete
  41. Excellent in pre-season, Hodgson chose to ship him off to Juventus where he excelled, Juventus tried to rip us off, he came back, once again was excellent in pre-season, Dalglish chose to ship him off to Milan, where again he excelled, but because Milan had a clause, play him 25 times and he was there's for a certain price, they stopped playing him after 22 or 23 matches, but after the season finished, they wanted to buy him, again trying to rip us off. Now once again, excelling in pre-season, time to give him a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  42. We have a young Gerrard, his name is Jonjo Shelvey

    ReplyDelete
  43. You call him shite, yet the stats say last season, he had a higher pass completion rate than Andres Iniesta, but oh wait, Iniesta is shite too

    ReplyDelete
  44. Again, I think you'll find Jonjo Shelvey fits that bill, scored a cracker against Chelsea at the end of the season, is a good passer, confident on the ball and deserves a chance to cement his place, he has been extremely impressive in pre-season, against Roma, he was immense

    ReplyDelete
  45. It was a great reply, haven't you seen him reply on before, full of tremendous insight.

    ReplyDelete
  46. This is something every manager does mate. Mourinho brought players in like Ferreira, Bosingwa and Carvahlo. Rafa brought in Pellegrino (more to help bring in the zonal marking system than for actually defending) and Fabio Aurelio. Managers do this because they know the players and know they can play to their system. Nothing to be worried about. The scouts will take time to start looking for players who will suit the tiki taka system. And I thought he was pursuing Clint Dempsey, who he has no previous history working with, so to quote the title of a tv show "Bang goes your theory"

    ReplyDelete
  47. He was very good at Juve but at Milan, excelled? pfft, don't know what you were watching. He was inconsistent for them and yet again, missed games through injury. Yep, they wanted him but at a dirt cheap price, not a great illustration of how good he was for them eh (and same goes for Juve, and they weren't shy on spending money in that particular season either) (!). I'm not too bothered by pre-season form (and as well as wary of your very positive outlook on his performances in general), that isn't a great indicator of how great a player will be in proper games, as its mainly about fitness and getting a team forming around the tactics for the season ahead, and playing against teams who are mediocre or top teams who aren't putting their all in either. So I don't get this hoo-ha over his pre-season games.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Maybe we do have a young Gerrard in Shelvey. But once again we (BR) is rumoured to let him go on loan as part of the Allen deal so do the club think he is al that. Also is Allen any better than Shelvey...........no imo

    ReplyDelete
  49. Iniesta is a fine player a game turning player with 1 pass he can turn a game he is world class. Allen passes backwards and sidewards his performances in general do not convince me he is the answer. Stats showing pass completion rates are nonsense. Its he type and quality of the pass that matters.A midfielder like Allen can pass the ball 100times and reach a team mate every time his impact on the game could be very little. Iniesta could pass the ball 100 times and succed in finding a team mate only 20 times but from those passes the team could score 20 times. Therefore completed pass rate does not have adirect bearing on a players ability to change a game or dictate a game. Yur comparison between the 2 playersis s.h.i.t.e.

  50. if he has done that wel he would be back at an italian club now,bad pass against roma led to one of the goals hes pure shit if we have to rely on his contribution all season its over before its begun

    ReplyDelete
  51. He wasn't bad Gaz but he and Jay got caught a couple of times with square passes that if in prem we would be punished.  Shelvey also can be fairly rash in the tackle and I can see him costing us with a silly sending off.  All that said I still think he's a class player but still alot to learn that's why I think he's be sent on loan

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'll be going to AA if we have another season like last one.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ha.ha. ha... good one. But seriously. Rafa bought a crocked player and we are stuck with him now.
For the wages paid out we must reap some form of benefit from Aqua. Kenny blundered loaning him out believing in the bumbling fools he bought. His one touch football is sublime. He can open up play from MF.
When Lucas and Adam got crocked. no backup.
I still believe Aqua will come good under BR. He is a skillful footballer. Could be his year you know.
