Liverpool 3-1 favourites to sign LFC-loving Arsenal star. Worth a bid..?

The recent departures of Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodrigues have left a couple of vacancies in the Liverpool squad for wide players, and with Stewart Downing now the only dedicated first-team winger, the need to sign quality wide players seems particularly acute. England winger Theo Walcott could be on his way out of Arsenal soon, and interestingly, the bookies have Liverpool as odds-on favourites to sign him.

According to several top UK bookmakers, including Skybet and Betfair, Liverpool are currently 3-1 favourites to sign Walcott, ahead of Chelsea (8-1) and Spurs (12-1).

The 23-year old's contract runs out next year, and it seems increasingly likely that Walcott will follow Robin Van Persie out of Arsenal this summer, so if Liverpool were interested, there could be a deal to be done.

One thing in the Reds' favour is that Walcott is a huge Liverpool fan, as he revealed in an interview a couple of years ago. He enthused:

"I was a Liverpool fan simply because my dad followed them. Unfortunately I wasn't born when the team had their golden era, but I enjoyed watching the likes of Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman when I was growing up. When Liverpool won the Champions League I went mad. I was shouting so loud I think I woke up the entire village where I live!"

I'm not a huge fan of Walcott but his end product over the last two season was far superior to any of Liverpool's attacking midfielders:

* Last season: 11 goals and 10 assists in 48 apps (43 starts)
* 2010-11: 13 goals and 13 assists in 47 apps (34 starts)

Walcott is a goalscoring attacking midfielder, which is exactly what Liverpool need, but his wage demands would probably be too excessive.

Worth a bid to test Arsenal's resolve?

  1. Probably yes. Although IMO the need for a central midfielder to replace the stagnant Henderson-Spearing duo is higher. I'd even say we'd be better off by playing Johnson as winger and spending the money available on a defensive midfielder.

  2. Certainly worth a try. Will give us some much needed pace.

  3. Absolutely, no doubt!  It will be a further step for FSG and Brendan Rodgers if they succeed to bring in Theo Walcott and Cristian Tello!

  4. I was a liverpool fan just because my dad followed them does not sound like a die hard red to me. Besides Liverpool can't offer him Champions league football. Face it there on the decline.

  5. Yeah I'd take Walcott- better than what we got so its an improvement. Hope we grab Tello from Barcelona too. Ander Herrera looks like a good playmaker in midfield.

  6. We would be foolish not to take the oportunity of bringing Walcott to Anfield he is still young and would fit in well.

  9. i think he's a decent player who hasn't reached his potential under wenger.he'd be a decent option in a front 3,he is versatile and has plenty of pace.him and suarez would be a nightmare for defenders.

  10. tello has said he doesn't want to leave barc, can't blame him and there was rumours they wanted a buy back clause.i reckon a season loan would be our best bet.he looks a quality prospect.

What more can I say? Technically he is not good enough to play as a wide midfielder (overall a poor passer and crosser) but his pace and direct running would be a great asset in a central strikers role, especially given that he often produces his best moments when he doesn't have much time on the ball and instead has to react using his instincts.
For a wingers role I would like to see Adam Johnson (aside from Stirling getting more game time) - great dribbler, can finish with either foot so is great to play on either wing and he is a winger who is never afraid to take on his man. Realistic option too.

  12.  can't see johnson being more realistic than walcott.
city will want back the fee they paid for him and he'll be on massive wages and if he was to leave he'd have alot of offers of champs league football.

Adam Johnson plays for himself - similar to Diouf - like a
'headless chook' getting nowhere!  That is why he has never had a regular start !

  16. 10m for walcott isnt bad and if he is a liverpool fan lets wait till next year and give him a decent contract he should accept it suarez and walcott up front will work well

  17. Walcott would be a good addition to the squad although i don't see why he wants to come to Liverpool without Champ League actions. He has played under Wenger's style, very much the pass and move style and I think he will easily fit into Brendan's style as well. His pace is excellent.

  18. We will be playing 4-3-3

We won't have wingers as such as required in a 4-4-2

    and we have Lucas

We will sign another forward - possibly Dempsey

    ReplyDelete
  19. Walcott is not signing because he wants 100k a week. Would Liverpool be ready to offer him that ?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Can't imagine we will go for Walcott, but BR may rate him highly

One point, he isn't odds on, odds-on would be 1-3, ie for every £3 staked you make £1 profit from the bookie

  21. Odds on would b 1-3 not 3-1

  22. Wingers are not primarily used in the tiki taka model. there is usually 1 sitter(lucas) and 2 box to box Mf's in the 3 man MF. Stevie G will be one of the box to box players, while, hopefully, someone new will be the other, backed up by aqua and henderson.

the front 3 is going to consist of borini and luisito, and if reports are to be believed, someone like ramirez or Clint D will be the final attacker.

in my opinion downing is not even going to be a regular starter in the league first 11. While theo is a good player, and was practically a done deal under KD, he is not who we need to spend money on.
i would prefer to see the money spent on at least one more striker,  if bellamy leaves another attacking MF(ramirez), a dynamic DM to challange lucas and a CB like the spurs youth swansea had on loan last season.

  25. I'm gonna go nuts by the time the season start if I have to keep hearing tiki taka .

    ReplyDelete
  26. Walcott is like cole - luxury great player but not consistant enough.  Still not regular at Arsenal and been there a long time now

    ReplyDelete
  27. seriuosly with this tiki taka style we are going to play how are the older players going to change style to adapt to this . dont we need to buy young widemen like affrey ant tello gaston ramirez oscar  . So if we devolope for going foward in next 10 years and win title . daglish  come in pleanty off promise old liverpool style and english signings like shankley it didnt work.man city have 6 front men we now have 2 because suarez will play wide yer. And we are trying to get rid off carroll everyone is saying borini is good for future .correct what about now ? dempsey with this new style how can he be better long term then tello  who has trained this tikitaka system. stevie g how much we love him last two years has been out more then in we have to seriously look to replace him.when kelly and glen got injurd we had massive problems finding players agger went wide and carragher struggled against everton and spearing was not good replacment for lucas he was shocking . Once again we need two three replacments most postions we are lucky to have one and its a older player like cole we put in and not sterling . liverpool of 70s and 80s were massive we have to get out of passed and change and we or our owners are not doing that in what 12 years best we had is second. if we finish 6th or 7th with young world class players learning tiki taka fine why waste money again on nearly 30 year old player eg dempsey or tello future tello downing or gaston ramirez (gaston) eg luka modric low 20mils for sale wouldnt hurt . we need to totally change.

  28. I sincerely doubt A.Johnson would have a lot of offers of C.L. football. C.L clubs are chelsea city utd and arsenal. Chelsea and Utd def wouldn't want him, and i doubt wenger would either. He's a good player, not a world-beater. Also heard rumours he drinks a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think he needs to go to a side where he will finally be given a central forward role. I don't rate him as a wide player, in terms of creativity, despite the assists, as he is rather mediocre in that regard when it comes to slowing things down. A wide forward needs to show that subtlety to their game, like Villa has shown but Theo doesn't have that as he doesn't have the variety or patience to his game. But He definitely has a eye for goal and couple that with his movement and pace beyond the last defender when getting on the end of the final pass, he can be a menace in that regard. Because of RVP's form, he simply hasn't been given (enough) opportunities to really show what he can do in a central forward role. I don't think he is what we need at the moment but I do, for his development as I am a England fan, hope that he gets a decent enough run in the team (whatever team) as a forward. I understand there are doubts over his ability as a player in that role but one won't truly know until he is given a proper shot at it. But BR had a somewhat similar (to a degree) headless speed merchant at Swansea with Sinclair and got some good mileage out of him for his system. So who knows. But yes, wages will be a problem as Arsenal maybe frugal with transfer fees, in terms of wages they aren't. Couple that with my thinking that FSG, without CL money, won't be too flexible with wages for the short term at least.

  30. Henderson-Spearing???? What about Lucas-Gerard? Also why do people have this obsession with playing attacking full backs out of position. If you want a winger, play a winger there.

There's little wrong with our midfield personnel, that a talented tactician wouldn't improve with our existing players.

  31. You're seriously in deep at the moment; it's going to take some intensive psychotherapy to bring you out of this mental malaise ;-)

  32. i don't know if Walcott would fancy playing in the Europa competition after so many consecutive seasons of Champions league foot-ball. Arsenal have been consistent in making it to that competition. Walcott is definately a step up in class compared to any wide man we have had in the last two seasons. The fact that he can also play up front as a center forward makes him even more valuable. Liverpool has needs of more pacy attacking players to really stretch defenses.

Walcott having spent a long time learning under "The Professor" at Arsenal would be a comfortable fit in Brendan Rodgers new quick passing , possession foot-balling strategy. I consider him one of England's best attacking talent. I think it would be a coup if Rodgers can pull this off. Unfortunately I don't believe this would really happen. I think we can chuck this one up under another pipe dream.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi Syda - I agree with you re Walcott's technical ability, which is one my personal reservations about him. However, the stats don't lie, and his end product is consistently good, and at the end of the day, that's all that matters.  If he came to Liverpool and scored grabbed 20+ goals and assists per season like he does at Arsenal, then I'd be happy with that.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Agree, Titi - Walcott is arguably a much more realistic target.

  35. i started following liverpool because my dad (who was at the heysel disaster and luckily got home safe)and brother supported them, i am now 40 , i buy a shirt for me and now my son every year, my family have held season tickets for over 20 years now, i watch every match ,sometimes twice that i possibly can, i check online and various sites close to hundreds of times a day,my son is named lucas, my dog is called rafa, my last was called shankly, i have a liverbird tattoo on my leg and i would never go out with a manc bird or have any friend with the name rooney, i wont even drive Audi due to the affiliation with manchester as it would seem like i am paying their wages. when england play, i support liverpool, if rooney misses a open goal, i piss myself laughing, i only watch friendlies hoping to see players from top rival teams hopefully get injured, not too much, just enough to take the edge of them if their due to play liverpool soon,( unfortunately this approach doesn't work as it usually liverpool players getting turned over), i suppose i am scouse, not english!. but saying that i wass born in merseyside and have lived " down south" since i was 8.
personally i feel i am as die hard as they come without being a total twat!   you tell me!

  36. why are we keep look looking at british players, they are overated n over price ,what about tello, affellay, jeffern n many more young talented players that will cost 7-10 mil ...what about our scouting system, look at the players alan pardew brought in at new castle compared to the british shyte who cost us millions.

  37. FUCK YOU JAMIE CUNT WAR

    ReplyDelete
  38. Now that we will be playing a style similar to Barcelona, a loan move would be beneficial to both clubs. For us we would be getting a quality young player with experience in our way of playing and his wages would be fairly low. If he helped us to a top 4 then he might be open to a move.

    ReplyDelete
  39. As Johnson's performances on the RB position have shown time and again, RW could be his position.

And what about Lucas-Gerrard? Even half-fit Gerrard is on an entirely different level to that of Henderson, while Spearing is extremely limited and we have had a track record of much better (physically and in terms of movement) defensive midfielders.I'd prefer not to talk about Lucas, as I seem to be in the minority that still doesn't believe he's good enough for a top-four team.

    ReplyDelete
  40. people say carroll drinks alot too.
that's just speculation.on his day johnson is a world beater.

    ReplyDelete
  41. if johnson was capable of doing a job at right wing i think we'd have seen it by now.dalglish,hodgson,capello,rafa-none of them tried him there.
he had a decent euros at right back.

    ReplyDelete
  42. so barcelona wouldn't overprice tello?-which they are rumoured to have done.same with afellay.jeffren wouldn't sign for us last summer.
newcastle signed some wonderful players but people suggesting they are the benchmark for scouting have got it wrong.
cabaye was in france, cisse was in germany.
it's not like they unearthed gems from deepest taiwan.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't think that's a good argument - Johnson repeatedly and plainly failed at RB during the time of both Hodgson and Dalglish, though Kelly was still not played as starting RB for more than a few matches. Managers think they have reasons to persist with their vision, but sometimes those reasons are just wrong.

One would guess it would've been at least worth a try to play Johnson at RW for several matches?

    ReplyDelete
  44.  i was really arguing, merely suggesting that all those managers must have seen something in his game that thought he wouldn't be suitable.rafa played finan, kronkamp, josemi at right midfield on ocassions but never johnson.i'd have kelly at right back and a proper right winger in the side ahead of him.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah I just meant 'point' when I said "argument". Regarding the players Rafa played there, I'd bet Johnson would perform much better as RW than those three. It just shows Rafa's vision which he didn't want to change.

    ReplyDelete
  46.  totally agree, rafa played so many people out of position but johnson might have been a good fit.i remember seeing fat dossena on the left wing,it was shambolic.

    ReplyDelete
  47. We have an overview of how BR will play, 4-3-3, possession based, attacking play with forwards and midfielders who will rest in possession and press like crazy when they don't have the ball.

Barca are a possible template for us.

They don't have wingers or widemen.

David Villa, when fit, plays as a left forward, Messi as a right forward initially - now more through the middle. Iniesta interchanges between being a forward and a midfielder.

Barca's pressing game means that when they win the ball back, any of the front 6 can find themselves in any of the front 6 positions.

Afellay has failed miserably at Barca, he is a head-down speed merchant. He hasn't got the subtlety required for Barca's game. He will not suit us.

Forget about Tello, Jeffren etc. These guys are decent enough, given game time to boost sell on price, but ultimately not good enough for Barca. So we don't want them either

We will have a situation where 3 of Borini, Suarez, Dempsey, Gerrard will be up top, with 3 of Gerrard, Shelvey, Lucas, Hendo, Aqua behind in MF.

Fluid interchange of positions, possibly like first 6 months under Kenny to a degree. Pity for him that he tinkered with it last summer!!

We just have to give BR time and trust his vision, developed over 20 years coaching.

Everyone needs to forget about £20 million signings and marquee signings, we haven't really got a clue about what exactly Rodgers is looking for.

It is the system and the team that will win us success, not individual talent - with exception of Suarez, he is a genius

    ReplyDelete
  48. He's a bit of a knob but he'd arguably be the fastest player we've ever had at the club.

    That's a sad thought actually...

    ReplyDelete
  49. To be fair to Afellay, he hasn't really been given that many starting opportunities and in his first season, he simply wasn't going to get it as the front three were on hot form and very little injuries.

Last season he had a big chance with Villa as well as Pedro wasn't exactly on top form to say the least but he himself got injured for around 6/7 months. So I think your being rather harsh on Afellay. Early days as to whether he is just incompatible and just speed merchant in the long run, in my view, as he has barely played and spent considerable parts of his Barca career injured. From what I saw at PSV, he wasn't just some direct speed freak and played quite a bit in central roles. That aside, Scott Sinclair is hardly the most expansive of wide players and Rodgers was fine with him in his system.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Liverpool has more than enough midfielders and any other team would make use of them better.

But a pacey winger would is needed but I'm not convinced this kind of a high profile signing Liverpool would endorse .

  52. Johnson as a right winger! Jeez Tony Blair is far more of a right winger!  He looks good going forward because he comes from deep, not once have I seen Johnsonroast a full back from a standing start. He's a wing back not a winger

  53. Jaimie, Skybet is offering Walcott for 3/1. But on thursday, the same Skybet was offering Dempsey for 1/5. Then, on friday betting was suspended on Dempsey. Think Dempsey deal is sealed and Walcott is unprobable. Moreover, Krasic is for 11/8 to join reds. So, Krasic looks more probable at bookies than Walcott 1. I'm quite surprised actually you missed Dempsey odds and ignored Krasic's 11/8 odds, instead chose to write on Walcott's poor favourite's odd of 3-1. 3/1 doesn't look a solid favourite to me. Anyway, good luck for your future articles.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Putting aside your vague, questionable and fleeting comment about training, you say he hasn't adjusted to their system. Out of curiousity, what is that based on what? the handful of games he has played in his first season (he arrived halfway through the season, so unreasonable to expect him to hit the ground running in that season)? based on his second season, which was ruined by several months of injury? As I said before, very little to base the assumption that he doesn't suit Barcelona or to even say he is some speed merchant.

    ReplyDelete
  60. well worth a bid. if top players can join and believe they can add something to make us better and least push for 4th then why not. hes not even peaked yet.
then we just need a wing wizard down the left. ie adam johnson

    ReplyDelete
  61. I've seen a few cameos from him with Barca last season and he did what I'd (from a British / Irish perspective) expect from a winger, beat the man on the outside and whipped an aimless low ball across the box without looking up.

It stood out because the other Barca players weren't doing it, he seemed out of touch with the ethos at Camp Nou. Could be the pressure...........

He is 26 now, I doubt he'll make it outside of Holland at this stage. Spurs, Arsenal or ourselves could be possible desinations.

Would you like to see him at Liverpool? You may have seem more of him play at PSV, so you might think it's worth the punt. My view is limited to how out of place he seemed in the few appearences I've seen him make for Barca,  and on that basis I wouldn't want us to sign him.

Absolute no brainer from Barca when they signed him. €3 million was a good investment.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I wouldn't mind Walcott at all. Atleast with this player you can actually "expect" things. What can you expect from Downing and Henderson on the wing?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Word of warning, Skybet combined with Sky Sports News reporting rumours provides real potential for conflict of interest.

Walcott evens now, punters lumping money on and it will probably fizzle away. Let's see what happens....

Dempsey 1/5 to join Liverpool now on BetVictor, I'll be keeping the credit card locked away for this one.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Well I disagree wholeheartedly as he is not a wide player that is obsessed with crossing, whether it be aimlessly or not. Yep, he loves to run at players but he is not a run & cross combo player at all. Watched the game against Betis (after injury, he barely did any of that, he did mostly receive, pass and move, which is Barca do. He understands their game and does reasonably well to execute it, though he isn't great at it yet but to say he has failed miserable, out of place, etc, I conclusively disagree as he has barely played and when he has played, he hasn't illustrated this constant run-and-cross combo you talk of, instead shows a good understanding of their game. Saw him play against Betis (in fact there is a video of his game against Betis on youtube, which highlights my point quite well) on one of his come back, he played most of his game simply. They played the boy in central midfield in one of his comeback games last season (I think against Vallecano, when he came on for that annoying Busquets. He played it nice and simple ), I think that illustrates to a extent they don't see him as some sort of headless chicken wing-er. Even at PSV, he did prefer to play through the middle, not on the wing, as he isn't a run-and-cross winger. I've watched him play for Barca and I do not see how you came to your conclusion but alas, football and subjectivity. Anyhoo, you don't rate him and think he has been a failure, etc, and I don't think he has been, we'll leave it there, cheers.

    ReplyDelete
  72. i don't think the problem with Liverpool was wings espencially since they heavily dominated matches and the 1:1 draw with man city at home is a case in point.i really think the problem was clearly finishing which was horrendous.now probably with a different style,Liverpool will be more patient, and will be asking questions repeatedly again and again and again.we don't need somebody who just thinks of bursting with speed immediately he sees a ball on his feet!though I think he would do well in teams which absorp pressure for long period then suddenly counter attack.the Roy Hodgson kind of team.

    Jaimie,

I think he'd be a good purchase IF he wants to come.
Bare in mind if he were to come he knows he's not going to be playing CL football.
IF he comes it would show some ambition on Theo's part and a persuasion on Brendan's part.

  78. That's right. Last seasons finishing was a freak. The shot-to-goal ratio was one of the lowest in world footballs top flight and we must have broke woodwork records and then there were our penalty misses.

We had top defence till xmas too. This was no crisis. Creating chances was not an issue. Downing can't get assists if strikers keep missing.

We didn't keep missing due to bad players so it won't be near as bad this season unless our style is bad. A lot of pressure on rodgers as not as much was as broke as people think. It was ALL about confidence for us last season. Carroll with a confident team behind him would be a different animal.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Watched the clip you mentioned. I was a little unfair perhaps.

I still don't think he is Barca class, but then again we are comparing to Xavi, Iniesta, Messi etc.

He did retain possession most of the time he received the ball even if it meant a backwards pass, which is good.

    ReplyDelete
  80. If we play the way i imagine we will be playing , like Swansea last season then a winger is not really what we need.
Firstly, Walcott would be a good addition i.e if he is willing to sacrifice CL football.
Secondly, there are obvious cheaper options ,yet young and equally skillful players that will fit our way of play too, i think i'm sounding like a bore because its the 3rd time i'm making this suggestion but never seem to get a response , it is Alan Dzagoev or Vaclav Pilar.
