'He has courage' - Boss admits Brendan Rodgers is right to dump Carroll...

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway has thrown his support behind Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, arguing that the Northern Irishman's strong stance over Andy Carroll shows that he has the 'courage of his convictions'.

In his column for The Mirror today, Holloway - who signed Jonjo Shelvey on loan last year - insisted Carroll is 'a very good striker who is only going to get better', but conceded that he understood that 'It can be difficult to get your players to keep the ball on the deck when there’s a big target man to aim for'. He added:

"Brendan Rodgers is a man with the courage of his convictions. When Anfield’s American owners suggested that he would have to work alongside a director of football, they were told in language they would understand that he wanted to do it his way.

"Now, the Kop boss has indicated that he’s not averse to the idea of sending out Andy Carroll on loan. Football is a game of opinions though, and in the opinion of the Liverpool manager it seems Carroll will not fit into his plans for the club. You can only admire the man for sticking to his beliefs".

I personally love the fact that Rodgers basically refused to take the Liverpool job unless the Director of Football role was scrapped. It shows that he's tough, knows what he wants, and is totally unwilling to compromise his vision.

As for Carroll, fans might as well face the reality: his time is up at Liverpool. Whether he leaves now, or in January, he will leave, and the football side of things will be better off as a result.

People keep going on about how Carroll 'needs time', or how he'll 'come good'. Seriously, it's time to WAKE UP. He's had 18 months already; how much more time does he need? Liverpool don't have any more time to waste on Carroll, and statistically, the facts speak for themselves:

* Only 6 league goals in 42 games (1 every 7 games/1 every 516 mins)

* 5.2% conversion rate (Lowest of any striker in the PL)

* Passing accuracy in opposition half: 57% (Lowest in LFC's squad by a long way)

* Overall Shooting accuracy: 35%

* Only 64% of aerial duels won, despite his height + alleged ability in the air.

As a comparison:

* Passing accuracy for the majority of Swansea's regular first-XI last season = 85%-93%.

* That includes striker Danny Graham, who had the fifth-best conversion rate (for strikers) in the league.

* With 12 goals and 2 assists in 36 league games last season, Graham - who cost Swansea £3.5 - also outscored Carroll, who managed only 4 goals and 2 assists in 35 league games.

Stats: OPTA

Why exactly does Carroll deserve more time? He's not a good fit for Liverpool, and I hope Rodgers continues to stick to his guns on this issue.

  1. A lot of Liverpool are strongly against sending Carroll away from Anfield but we have to look at the fact that he has no agility or guile. He is improving but he become what he is not.
I blame Kenny for buying a striker who does not fit in our playing style at all.

  2. sooner people realise that rodgers wants rid of carroll the better.
if we get a bid of 15mil i reckon we'll sell.
he's had 18months at the club and hasn't delivered.
people can come up with fitness/new club/new team mates excuses all they want but he isn't good enough and we were silly to buy him.

  3. the fact kenny tried to get rid of him for tevez in january showed he knew he signed a dud

  4. blame kenny all you like if you had £50m to play with and you had an hour to find a replacement striker you would turn your attention to the striker who was 2 goals behind tevez and berbatov at the time

  5. If a footballer cannot adapt his style of play to be more agile, then he is a poor excuse for a professional. He plays for LFC, one of the biggest clubs in Europe with arguably the best history. Carroll would not have got this far if he did not have the technical ability to play a simple passing game.

  6. Even if the timeframe was stretched and Carroll was a panic buy, it just shows bad planning/organisation by Dalglish and especially Comolli.

  7.  Carroll would not have got this far if he did not have the technical ability to play a simple passing game.

During his career, when has Carroll ever been in a team that played a 'simple passing game'?  He's been in teams that play route one football, where everything is set-up to serve him.

A player with above average technical ability does not have a passing accuracy percentage of 57%.

  11. Amen Hallelujah. I am beginning to see the Rodgers appointment as the coming of the Messiah. For the first time in a long time I am really beginning to feel good about Liverpool once again. Not to get too religious but many sins were committed in Liverpool last season. Sinful wastes of money on player contract for players not really worth half as much as they were supposed to be. Sinful waste of chances that Andy Carroll and a lot of other subpar talent missed in front of goal last season. Seems like we have a man in charge who is calm and collected and seems like he can be trusted to make good sound rational decisions. Something always admirable in a manager.

I see the transfer window of the summer of 2012 as simply "Judgement day," when players who have existed under the false pretense that they really were that good get a reality check. It has nothing to do with popularity (since many liverpool fans support anyone in a red shirt no matter how terrible they really may be) simply a question of talent. The most talented get to stay the least talented get to go.

Carroll has been easily one of the most popular by far amongst the Kop faithful but is easily one of the least talented stars for many reasons. His major weakness is a lack of quality when it comes to holding onto possession when he is forced to play the ball on the ground. Good in the air but terrible on the ground. In Brendan Rodgers 4-3-3 formation there is more than a little concern that Carroll can be trusted to hold his own up top with out a another player playing directly off him to help set him up in front of goal. On a ranking of top talented 23 year old strikers in the world Carroll would not feature in the top 20 this is my opinion and nothing more. He needs to continue to improve at a club with less ambition than Liverpool FC. It is a case of the clubs ambitions overshadowing those of Andy Carroll's.  A mid-table club like Fulham or West Ham where he can play  without all the scrutiny he will face at Liverpool is just what the doctor ordered. I don't personally care if he is loaned out or sold outright but i feel that a less pressure environment will only help his game .Liverpool needs to return to it's status as an elite club for elite players and not an amateur club for mediocre talent. We simply need to do a better job in selecting players based on their actual performance and not just on their believed future potential.

  12. good point . Kenny loved Carroll so much that he did not hesitate to try to sell him last January for another troubled but very talented foo-baller in Tevez. If he was judged on nothing but previous accomplishments alone Carroll may not have purchased but he was judged on future potential and that was the not the kind of player the club needed to replace a player of the caliber of Fernando Torres

  13. Carroll has just started to come good, he finished last season playing better than at any time during his spell at Liverpool and then did well with England in the Euros. His confidence will be sky high and I'm sure if Rodgers gave him a chance (which he said he would give every player) he will be able to adapt and fit into the new system. Yes Rodgers likes his players to keep the ball and wear down the opposition with possession but Swansea still put crosses into the box and a fit and confident Carroll will be still be a threat in this system.

  14. there was even rumours abt trading Torres for Studridge+35 mil...should hav happened... well, let's hope for the best for big Andy...nice lad, working hard though..

    ReplyDelete
  15. It's true, it was bad planning on Liverpool's part. However, my understanding is that a few weeks earlier, Torres had stated his desire to stay at Anfield. Furthermore, even during the transfer window, it was suggested that there was miscommunication between Torres and his agent and that he did not want to leave Liverpool.

Who knows what the truth is? The media constantly spew rumours, presenting them as gospel truths (like Liverpool have signed Gaston Ramirez). Maybe you know more, as you may have commented on this at the time.

Anyway, one of the biggest mistakes Liverpool made was employing Comolli in the first place.

I agree. Suarez an boroni will use the wings to either take on the defender or cross the ball like dyer and sinclair did for swansea for graham

I feel what ever article you write JK in the is always going to be against Kenny,Adam,Henderson,Downing &Carroll.Come on grow up a bit Carroll played quite well in the euros & also played well in couple of games at the end of the season.Give him a chance to show what he is worth.He.is still young and how sure are you we can count on Borini.A couple of bad performance and the.next thing you know there is an article by Jamie Kanwar about "why this 10.5 millon flop sould leave anfield"

  18. I maintain that LFC's new owners forced Torres into asking for a transfer by holding out until the last few minutes of the transfer deadline knowing that they wanted the money from him to purchase a new striker! THEY DO NOT WANT TO SPEND MONEY! They obviously thought that Dalglish had a top striker for replacement.A big mistake,by leaving it until the last few minutes they also left KK no time to make a good replacement signing.
Fans can disagree but I believe Torres wanted to stay at Anfield but was let down over promises of some good new signings! THAT IS WHY HE DECIDED IN THOSE LAST FEW MINUTES TO ASK FOR A TRANSFER!
All planned by the new owners who thought they could make a vast profit on him!
Not only did they not make a top signing but they also paid over the odds by giving Commolli very little time to make a reasonable deal, and he was pressured to increase the offer by the Newcastle owner,(a very shrewd man!).

    ReplyDelete
  19. Throughout last season, almost every single so-called LFC fan was screaming for Carroll to be sold. Now, with the appointment of Brendan and with the reality that he could be sold, many fans are arguing for his stay and to be given another chance. I find this really amusing.

Lets face it, I think it would be difficult for Carroll to fit into Brendan's playing philosophy. Carroll is not a useless footballer. He has his strengths but strengths that can be better exploited with a playing system that suits him. When he played for Newcastle, he was their target man and most plays were centred on him.

Unless Brendan can come up with a creative way of blending him into his playing style, I can't really see how Carroll fits in. Yes, he is useful for crosses but when you play the tiki taka style, there may not be that many crosses for him to play on.

I am a Carroll admirer. He has got a really good left footer, strong in the air and is able to win high balls to play on team mates. But logically, he don't fit in currently and it would not be fair to hold on to him if he won't be played regularly. It would ruin a promising young footballer's career. Sad to say, while some EPL teams still see value in him, Liverpool should cut their losses and sell him.

Yogibearone...not true at all. read reinas book.torres wanted out in the summer but purslow said no big players can leave as the club was up for sale and could put off potential buyers. purslow then sold mascherano and that was the final straw for ft. he wanted to leave to play champs league and win trophies which chelsea did but due to drogba not ft. fsg are prepared to spend money hence the compo spent firing and hiring staff and us looking at signing 3 players with hardly any money coming back in from player sales

  24. so many excuses for just one player. Why can't he also continue to improve like Shelvy did on loan last season. Why is loaning Carroll so bad for the player. Would you even give a damn about the player if he hadn't been bought in a desperate last minute shopping frenzy two christmases ago. If he is as good as you say he will continue to adapt and grow no matter where he goes. You don't lose talent if you actually have it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Because I believe he has a part to play at Liverpool and I don't want another team to benefit from the upturn in his form. When Carroll was bought has nothing to do with anything I have said and doesn't make sense. Your right about not losing talent but confidence can be lost, at the start of last season Carroll had lost all confidence and was pretty poor but towards the end of the season he had regained his self belief, he had the crowd on his side and looked a different player. It's because of that end of season form and what he did in the Euros that I believe he deserves a chance to prove his worth to Rodgers.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Kenny Dalglish said, after Carroll's disappointing start to life at Anfield, that he would acquire players to get the best out of Andy. In came players like Downing and Adam who supposedly could deliver a decent ball to a target man. It seems increasingly likely that Carroll will be moved on, not just because of poor stats, but because he doesn't seem to fit Rodger's system. Should this then not mean that Adam and Downing should be moved on too?

I will be disappointed to see Carroll go, but that's up to the manager to decide. It would be even more disappointing if Rodgers doesn't take a good look at him in pre-season, as stated in his press conference, before he makes up his mind.

The positive side of things is that if Rodger's is willing to take such a step with a young player who can improve, then maybe he will take bold decisions with some of the others despite their price tag. Hopefully he will also replace the outgoing players with decent, quality signings, and I don't mean short-stature Swansea players (irrespective of ability).

  32. I cant see what ability Carroll possesses apart from average ability in the air.He has very little ball control. If it wasn't for his height I doubt very much if he would have made a professional footballer.I would be happy for Liverpool to sell him,If he is a good as some people portray where are the big offers to buy him?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I got really tired of watching Carroll being out of position, slowly chasing the ball and jumping to meet a cross only to miss and fall over. So, he scored a few goals towards the end of the season but that doesn't gloss over the fact that he was ineffective for most of it. I know he was unfit and injured when he arrived but that beggars the question of why on earth he was bought. It's an awful lot of money to spend on a crocked player. One could argue that had KD bought a striker who was fully fit and had pace and could actually score we would have achieved fourth spot and be playing CL football. We'd also be in a better position to attract quality players in future.

  43. what better place to rebuild your lost confidence but in an enviroment with out a  lot of pressure. He is a developing player who replaced a developed player ofcourse he was going to be compared to the  man he replaced. He has not done enough to convince a lot of pundits that he is really that good. The media has had a field day with him. So understandably he has little confidence. Does it not make sense for him to play in a less pressure enviroment with out all the media fuss and to regain that confidence. Carroll is someone that will remain a  part of the national consciousness for a long time. If he gains his confidence while on loan or at a different team the big club will come knocking. At 23 he has a lifetime of foot-ball left. Nobody gave a damn about Carroll before he signed for Liverpool and now it seen by many as if the club will not survive without him. He is a young English striker playing at Liverpool , something that hasn't happened since Owen was a player therefore he is seen as an iconic heroic figure by many no matter that his game has a lot left to be desired. The bottom line is that in the new formation that Rodgers  want's to deploy Carroll is expected to play up top by himself and he is not known for going it alone , he  is better with a strike patner like he had when playing for England. So he is not seen as adequate fit by the manager.

If Carroll leaves Liverpool he can continue to be grow at his own pace. He is just not a comfortable fit for the direction the club now wants to go . Nothing against him it's just business.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thought your name was smurfy?

  47. I don't get it....I think it's the best thing to do with Carroll. Loan him out to the bottom half of the EPL, hope that he gets back on the streak he had at NU, which 15-20 goals then maybe someone would be willing to pay more than 8-10 mil for him.

    ReplyDelete
  48. So Liverpool FC should be a training grounds to see if someone can fit? Please, stop writing off seasons so players can improve. It's either you have it or don't. And if you don't, bugger off.

  50. who the do you think you are calling me stupid. If I am wrong you prove it but I am right. At the time Torres could have been sold for no more tha 25m he was playing like shite and had been for 12 months he was sulking causing problems at the club. I reiterate the deal as above

    ReplyDelete
  51. Er no, I'm saying his confidence will be high now considering his performances lately. Loaning him out is not an option, that's why it's been rejected tonight. You don't loan out established players unless you want rid of the player. If Rodgers wants rid of Carroll without seeing him up close and personal after saying he wants to assess the whole squad he's already losing credibility in my eyes. Rodgers, he said is allowing everybody a clean slate, a chance to come in, work hard and try to impress the new manager and it seems certain players who looked like they was fringe players (Aqualani & Cole) have done enough to earn a place in his squad for next season. But Carroll it seems is not going to be given that same opportunity and is already being touted about as up for sale. Football, I know is a game of opinions, what I don't like about this situation is that in my eyes Carroll is the only one being singled out and not being given a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  52. How many good wingers do lfc have? How many good wing-backs do they have? G Johnson is a good attacker, but not the best crosser! Enrique is a good crosser but never had a good working relationship with downing! Downing is a bad crosser of the ball, always has been!
How anyone can have a go at carroll is beyond me. No service, no goals! Apart from gerrard and agger (once with a header) who else assisted Carroll with a goal?
Dalglish did not get good crossers, that's the truth! Imo he did only half a job!
Rogers can teach anyone about how & when to move, what total football is about! It's the easiest thing ever. Read ur colleagues body language, know and understand where ur colleague wants u! Know each others strengths n weakness's, this is not a lot to ask for! For 80k a wk I will find out my mother in-laws expectations!
Please Brendon Rogers, I beg of u, learn from... (I can't believe I'm writing this) learn from Spain, barca & SWANSEA! U need a plan B!
U need talent, composure, intellect and mostly Passion!!! all of which I see Carroll possessing! (he may need tweaking a little) he is capable of learning for sure! He is ur man for plan A&B, do not let him go! He has the potential to be a $100 million player! YNWA

  53. Chelsea has oil fields so they were willing to pay over the moon for Torres and that is purely their business. The fact is that even at 10 mil pounds, I can't say that AC is anywhere a steal. They really could and should have kept all the money from the sale of Torres instead of making such a panic buy.

Anybody with a little football management knowledge should know, at 35 mil pounds, one is expected to play world-class football immediately and not being labeled as 'player for the future'. The poor boy simply has no answer for that gigantic price tag because he just doesn't have the ability to do so. If anyone says that the price tag has no effect on him, I would say it's crap.

For the dire situation we are in right now, I only faulted KD and Comolli. They failed to find suitable candidates at suitable prices, paid ridiculously over the odds for unproven players and failure to motivate and guide existing players.

If BR wants AC to go, that's not the end of world for him. He can always go to another team that plays long ball and use him as target man. He maybe able to reproduce the form he showed at Newcastle. Sadly though, I just can't see that happening at LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  54. In all honesty Andy's problem  was broadcast by the media for all to see. Everyone knew about his troubles in front of goal . Even Rodgers had to as he was managing Swansea. He was one most talked about players in the premiere league. Don't think that Rodgers needs to have an extensive training session to properly assess Andy Carroll. Seems like he made up his mind about the type of player he wants in attack .

    ReplyDelete
  55. Sadly, I just don't see that coming for AC. He doesn't have the ability and mentality to do so for LFC. I fully agree to one of the earlier post by Chib saying AC will not be in the top 20 for all 23 year old strikers around the world. Let the poor boy off the hook and not torture him anymore. Let him go to a club that is less ambitious and suitable for his style. That's good for everyone, don't you think so?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi Chib, you are absolutely right on this one. He should go to a less ambitious club with lower expectation that suits his ability and mentality. We can't gamble on him again after the catastrophic 2011-12 season.

  57. Nobody wants to be against KD, an anfield legend, and any of the players at LFC. We don't target them personally but rather point out objectively that these group of people failed to do their job required. We don't need to zoom in any further, our final position in the league table last season tells us everything we need to know. It's a choice for us fans to live in denial but what I love about this LFC fan site is that we true fans can voice objective opinions without being cursed. I believe we are all true fans of LFC and I really don't see JK as being biased against anybody for no rightful reason. We just want LFC to be good!

  58. At the time kenny was three weeks into the job was told torres wanted away not much time for planning was there.

  59. You're an idiot. He had plenty of service last season. His 5% conversion rate proves that he had plenty of chances. He scored 1 goal in every twenty chances. You don't get 20 games when you're not getting service. He certainly wasn't creating them for himself.

He has very little talent and he isn't good enough for Liverpool. He should be sold.

Potential to be 100mil player? Do yourself a favour and follow a different sport.

    ReplyDelete
  60. As far as what many fans including myself can see, AC just doesn't have it in him to be one of the top strikers that had donned the colors of LFC. Of course we do have a choice to live in delusion that AC will come good some day. Though I'm very sure I'm not one of them. It's really nothing against the poor boy, all of us have to understand that not every footballer is destined to be a top player at a top club. Else, it should be rather direct for us, no need to look anywhere else, just spend some money to buy the top 5 strikers in Conference league and pluck them straight into our first team and, they should come good.

Let's hope we can successfully rebuild LFC under the leadership of BR. YNWA!

  63. carroll will come good, as he was before, but maybe not at lfc now. his headed goal at euros was excellent. and he has lots to offer, to the right team/set up. if he goes, lets just hope that we sell him for a decent price. btw, it's about time we bought a supposedly good player for a decent fee ie borino. instead of 20/35m. no offence kenny :) time will tell though. am all for playing football ala barca/spain, but lets hope we don't turn into them and arsenal and just try and walk the ball into the net. there's nothing wrong with a good cross and a decisive headed goal. as we have proved in the past. that's football.

  69. Again I'll go back to his recent form that says he has the ability and mentality to succeed at Liverpool. In the space of a week he dominated the Chelsea centre halves twice, a team that had comfortably kept out Barcelona over two legs previous to that game and who a week later won the champions league. You can't do that against quality opposition unless you have something about you.

  70. To a certain extent I agree that the playing style and the service wasn't all that complimentery to Carroll's style but regardless of quality of service, there is no excusing his lazy movement when attacking the box and his overall play for most of his time at this club.
