Speculation is rife that Liverpool are close to signing Fulham striker Clint Dempsey, and if Brendan Rodgers is able to pull off the deal, fans and ex-players will be extremely happy, as will Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner, who is a self-confessed fan of the American striker.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo recently, Liverpool legend John Aldridge argued that the Reds need to bring in 'at least three or four players' this summer, and urged the club to dump players who aren’t good enough 'regardless of what they cost'.
With Andy Carroll's future far from certain at the moment, Dempsey would be a superb replacement, and Aldo agrees. He said:
"In terms of players coming in, we certainly need another striker and Clint Dempsey for the price would be a good signing".
During a Q&A session at Craven Cottage in April, Fulham Boss Martin Jol made it clear that Dempsey would be shipped out if he refused to sign a new contract. The following tweets from someone who attended the session confirm this:
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol managed 10m-rated Dempsey at New England Revolution, and he recently talked up the possibility of a move to one of the Premier League's big clubs:
"If you look at Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, the way they play would suit him [Dempsey] down to the ground, and for me, there's no reason why any one of those teams shouldn't be looking at him.
Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner is also a fan of Dempsey, as he revealed in May:
"We never talk publicly about our transfer targets, however, any team would be lucky to have Clint Dempsey playing on their squad"
With 28 goals and 7 assists in all competitions for (for Fulham and the USA), Dempsey's record last season was very impressive, and given his experience in the Premier League, I'm sure he could replicate that form at Liverpool.

He would be a great signing if it came 2-3 years earlier he is 30 I believe and will cost in the region of 7-10m in my opinion is way too much for somebody of his age
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be a typical LFC signing it seems. A 29 yr old Dempsey for around £7.5M or Afellay (who is on the market) for £6M asking price? Bet they go for the American.....
ReplyDeleteGood signing as we lack goals from upfront/midfield.We need pacy wingers and creative CM too
ReplyDelete@yahoo i agree mate, but that said i don't think Affelay wants to leave Barce and if he does he wants to play in the CL which we can't offer. But theres nothing stopping us making a bid for Affelay, he would suit BR style more then Dempsey
ReplyDeleteAgreed Truthers, but he is a Yank, and would sell well in the states, its all about money.
ReplyDeleteDifference is that Aefellay doesn't want to move on
ReplyDeletewould like fenway to come out and tell us whats in the kitty for br to spend . because all this spec is driving me nuts. about this player and that player . we shoppin at harrods or tj s . just put us in the picture!!
ReplyDeleteI hope to God this isn't the 'exciting' transfer that Brendan Rodgers was talking about! Functional, maybe, but certainly not exciting. I am very suspicious that if Dempsey does arrive at Anfield, it would have had something to do with the owners. Whatever happened to the transfer policy of buying young players with potential?
ReplyDeleteEljero Elia, love him or hate him, went to Werder Bremen for £4.3 million....
Great idea. Hopefully the teams we buy from will know it as well and virtually ensure that we spend every single penny. Great bargaining strategy mate.
ReplyDeletebut we have a new robbie fowler coming through the ranks . adam morgan can see him in the picture this season.
ReplyDeleteYou're talking him up a bit, you clearly would be happy to see him at the club. He had 17 premier league goals last year, I think that would be a far more realistic figure to consider in his evaluation. It's a good number but not mind-blowing. Better than Suarez and more than Kuyt ever produced for us. For the right price he'd certainly be a good addition but can we get that same kind of quality for a similar price and end up with someone with a better shelf life?
ReplyDeleteGoals for USA ... seriously JK, could you be any more random?
i don't think Afellay could even get off the bench at Barcalona mate. He is great star when others are mediocre like at PSV Eindohoven. Dempsey has proven him self buy out scoring a lot of bigger names so who gives a fuck how old he is . If he can score he can play for Liverpool. I bet you wouldn't say no to Milan's Ibrahimovich who is about the same age as Dempsey. Try not to let your bias against an American star show too much my friend.
ReplyDeleteno you biased so and so( i have to keep it clean or Jamie will delete me) It has to do with his 29 goals in all competitions. Goals is what your local Geordie hero couldn't provide. If he has problems doing that he has to go out on loan plain and simple. A lot of you are moaning and groaning about that. Liverpool is once again a level playing field no special privaledges. Rodgers got the job because he promised to deliver a top four finish. It is clear that Carroll is not the man to lead the line and accomplish that task regardless of what improvements he made at the end of last season. Brendan Rodgers can not ignore Carroll's terrible stats of 49 starts and 7 goals . He just does not inspire confidence from his manager with stats like that.
ReplyDeleteDempsey would be a good addition to the squad. His record speaks for itself. Looking at the way FSG operates, they won't buy him if just because he is their fellow Americans. I like him. His positioning around the box is good.
ReplyDeleteLFC don't need any exciting transfer this summer. They just need to strengthen the team in certain departments. Besides, they don't have a big kitty to spend. I know people have been very critical of players like Downing, Charlie Adam and Carroll and others. But, individually, they are not bad players. They have their individual strengths.
The biggest task for Brendan now is to get them playing effectively as a unit and to mould them into one with his playing style. This was something Kenny could not do consistently, thus the erratic results. The team was incoherent many times. I have been quite impressed with Brendan and I think he will move us forward this coming season. I think he has inherited a decent set of players for him to implement his playing style.
Dempsey would be a good signing, maybe very good, and fine value for the money. Who says it will be 10 million? maybe it's 7 or 8. Anyway he's had the best season of his career, is the same age as RvP and while not remotely in that class, someone may pay 30 million for Van. He's heads above Carroll and built for the football Rodgers will play. We cannot buy marquee players at this point, but buying 35 goals / assists for a quarter of what Carroll cost is at least a step forward. A front line of Borini, Suarez and Dempsey with Gerrard and Aqua in supply just might score some goals. Affelay is not the answer. He's 26, doesn't score goals, nor many assists, injury prone, decent but not terrific at dribbling. Not much of an improvement over Downing. Much rather see us sell Downing for whatever and buy a player like Gaston Ramirez.
ReplyDeleteNot sure why you feel the need to be rude.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, as I said, it would be a 'functional' purchase, the reason being his stats for last year were good. But time will tell if it turns out to be the right move. He is essentially being purchased off the back of one exceptional season, in much the same way that Stewart Downing was brought to Liverpool following one of his best seasons, statistically. Considering the now well-documented FSG transfer policy, this transfer doesn't quite add up - there is no resale value here for the FSG business men. What every team needs at the highest level are game changers, 'exciting' players who can produce a bit of magic when needed. In Suarez we have that, but there is no-one else. Maybe Rodgers is thinking of promoting Sterling and Suso. But without this type of player, I feel certain that Liverpool will continue to struggle to make top 4 and win the EPL. I don't believe these players have to cost the earth. You just have to know where to look for them. Liverpool have proved over the recent past that they don't.
Dempsey would be a decent signing but he is not signing which will excite me as a fan and don't think he will be more than a squad player.
ReplyDeleteRAHEEM STERLING IS MUCH BETTER OPTION!
ReplyDeletewe don't need to buy strikers.. we have suarez, caroll, adam morgan and raheem sterling:-)))))))))))))))
ReplyDeletehow do you know what rogers promised. if we sell Carroll we will rue the day mate. If its a level playing field as you put it then last years stats and what happened doesnt matter or is it only a level playing field when it suits you.
ReplyDeletewe have several young players coming through and one or two of them look the part. If we sign a 30 year old what kind of message does this give them. Buy Borini if we must but we must nurture the reserve talent we have.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we will ever find a player in Fowler's class again, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteMorgan looks promising, but sadly reminds me more of Neil Mellor. I hope I'm wrong.
:(
FSG are always banging on about signing young players and developing them. How does Dempsey fit into this categorie? he is 29-30 set in his ways surely Jovetic would be a much better investment.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the strategy of buying youth, which I believe we will get in borini, & hopefully Gaston, sturridge or Johnson. All great prospects for the future. But to help us NOW we need someone who A - has prem experience, and B - Good eye for goal, and a good attacking midfielder... We can't fill the starting 11 with young players and expect them to consistently perform and get us CL football, we need some cool headed experienced players in there as well, which for me Dempsey brings in abundance.
ReplyDeleteYour not !
ReplyDeleteI like Dempsey's quality, but at 29, his pace is only going to go down from here, & we are probably left with 1-2 years to get the best out of him.
ReplyDeleteIm all for Dempsey coming to our club, what a great addition he would be, someone who actually knows how to put that circular thing into that net thing, ulike most of our players last season. Its a step in the right direction at last, welldone Brenden Rodgers thiers hope for us yet. RedMan4Life.
ReplyDeleteI agree Dawnielee, if Dempsey can score 17 goals at fulham (with however many assists), with all respect to Fulham, imagine what he can do with Suarez, gerrard & Borini...
ReplyDeleteMate, look at the price difference... Plus Dempsey has a huge amount of Prem experience, which the younger signings we are hopefully going to get can benefit from...
ReplyDeleteIm not convinced by Dempsey tbh, yes he did have a good season with Fulham but i have also seem him looking completely and utterly amateur at times, IMO he would be out of his depth if he comes to LFC, i question his mentality and whether he has the bottle or steel to raise his game, afterall we are not Fulham....
ReplyDeleteNothing against the guy personally, he comes across as a decent fella etc and his stats for last season are good enough to warrant consideration, but i can't help but have grave reservations about the guy, could be a big mistake to replace Carroll with Dempsey IMHO.
Dempsey is too old and won't be coming anywhere near mersyside to stay!
ReplyDeletelol adam morgan
ReplyDeleteI'm more worried to hear Bellamy is going back to Cardiff. Thought he was a good impact player to come off the bench and is a great squad player for the cup games... Thought he would fit well into BR plans as well, pace with good passing.
ReplyDeleteChib in no way was I being critical of you, but I would point out that it is important to stick to the facts and not make assumptions.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I'm not sure how I am prejudiced against Dempsey. He doesn't excite me, that doesn't mean he can't do a job if he arrives at Anfield, surely I'm allowed to feel that way about a player. Would you say this if I told you that I felt the same way about Downing, Henderson, Adam and Carroll prior to their arrival at the club? None of these were 'exciting' acquisitions in my book, but players bought on the basis of stats, and look how that turned out?
I'm not quite sure who stated that Dempsey was not impressive in previous seasons but I am aware that statistically Dempsey has been a decent performer to date. However, I would be wary about shelling out money on players in that age bracket on the back of one exceptional season or tournament, it still represents a risk in a player who is most likely more set in his ways and difficult to nurture.
Lastly, you've got me wrong on the whole Andy Carroll thing. I am not actually an AC fan. But business wise, I think it is a bit early to throw away such an expensive investment. A loan move would be the first step in moving him out of the club because I don't see how going to a club like West Ham (who he's been linked with), will develop his game to play the way Liverpool intend to play. There would be no benefit for Liverpool. The only possible advantage of such a move would be to increase his market value with a view to a sale. He's 23, he should be given a chance to see if he can fit into Rodger's system. If he can't then it may be an idea then to try and sell him. If there's interest now, there should still be interest in the next transfer window.
Hey buddy no manager can promise a top four finish and i don't recall BR ever promising that(correct me if you can) I also am not a fan of Carroll but hey we bought him, as for Dempsey, if the owners have introduced a policy, not to by certain aged players than one can't help but feel that if they are looking at him than it is biased. I actually do not mind Dempsey, if they get him i hope that there is someone else to come in as well because i don't believe that he will be enough.
ReplyDeleteI think he is a good all around attacking player and would at least make a good squad player for a top 4 side. He impressed me even before last season (I thought Dembele looked good too and he doesn't have much time left on his contract either), when he was playing in deeper/wider positions. But I don't see the club going all out for him, considering his age. So they may well try to go for him but they won't be flexible, me thinks.
ReplyDeleteNot exactly the most complimentary of things to say about him but one of my great memories of him is him trying to unsuccessfully pull off the Rabona against Brazil of all teams.
hell yeees sign him he is a great player and what a player suso is i think he has this place in the 1ST team
ReplyDeleteSurely he would be a good signing for lfc.He proved his value last term, with classy perfomances and crucial goals for the londoners of fulham.Despite the fact that he turned up 29 i believe that his ambitions are the same with ours and his main target is to play champions league football. He is a skillfull player and he will offer solutions to our main problem last season which was converting chances into goals.hope that he will sign soon!
ReplyDeleteThey want Dempsey before they go out to the US so they can use him in promoting Liverpool even more in the US. Dempsey has many fans in the US.
ReplyDeleteOk lets get this right I'd like us to sign Cavani, Leandro Damao. Realistically won't happen. At the level the club is now and the lack of firepower we have Dempsey for the money (8 mil) is good business. The future is one thing, we need the now!
ReplyDeleteHe scores goals......at the moment if he wanted to come and we could afford him I'd send the devil himself to come and play in a red shirt!!!
I'm just wondering how much money do we have for BR this season? Dempsey is definitely more than an 'okay' addition. He moves well around the box and has some ideas about putting the ball behind the net. The only thing against him is age. It could be a bargain if we can get him for 8 mil pounds.
ReplyDeleteFootball is all Tatics. And the financial side of it is probably just as important. Letting the world know how much we have to spend will only push up the asking price. It's all about money, paying debt for many clubs.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about Dempsey but if we can get him for around 4m I'd be happy to see him in a red shirt. Like many of us though we want to see some stars playing for Liverpool again in order to attract other players in the future. I think BR will shake it up at Liverpool and I believe he'll do very well. We are building for the future and some of our players like jonjo and raheem are the basis of that. From now on the only way is up. YNWA
Lifelong fan
i dont know what all the hype is about dempsey hes 29 how long do you think we will get out of him 2 years at 7.5 mill thats 3.5 mill per year plus his wages how much more money do lfc want to waste got to start buying younger
ReplyDeleteyawn.
ReplyDeleteIf we buy Dempsey, i expect the fee to be a lot less then 10m .. more around the 5m, based on his refusal to sign a new contract with Fulham and only having 1 year remaining, unless others get involved and it becomes a bidding war, then we'll step out.
ReplyDeleteIf we buy Dempsey he will be a good addition to the squad and for those suggesting he is to old, in a couple of years we will have the youngsters playing regular so he's a 3 year plan.
If we buy Dempsey, his fee and wages will be well covered by the sales revenue generated in the USA ... I'd go so far as to say, his signing would generate a profit for the club over and above his transfer fee and wages, so we get a good player and make money.
So will he sign, no idea, do I want him to sign.. its not up to me! But if we do, then I can't see any real negative issues...
Liverpool has just been painstakingly slow if not outright static this transfer window. Granted Daglish did a lot of very poor business last time around but eish, the caution employed in this window is way too much. U cant baulk @ a 10mil evaluation of Dempsey!! We missed out on Sirgudsson because of this baulking and Totnham got him, now this. Dont be surprised to hear Totnham have gotten Dempsey as well.
ReplyDeleteWith time moving like this, I think its about time Big Bren got us those 3/4 players. And he also needs to use our youngsters before they also baulk @ lack of first team action. Suso, Raheem aint gonna stay beyond this season if Big Bren doesnt get look at them and continues with the Daglish idea of not getting the youngsters in because of trying to "protect their careers".
