Daniel Agger and Simon Kjaer formed a formidable defensive partnership for Denmark during Euro 2012, and according to Liverpool legend Jan Molby, Agger was the best defender in the entire tournament.
Speaking to the Official Liverpool FC website last night, Molby enthused:
"As far as I'm concerned, Daniel Agger was the best centre-half at Euro 2012.
"I'm not saying that because I'm Danish, I just thought he was immense.
"He almost played on his own at the back against three of the best teams in the world, and he was immense".
Speculation is rising that Real Madrid are planning to move for Agger over the summer, but is there any chance the Dane will leave?
It doesn't seem likely. In an interview after Denmark's defeat to Germany, Agger made it clear that he's happy to stay at Liverpool for the foreseeable future. He said:
"It's no secret that I'm happy at Liverpool. I have not spoken with the club [i.e. Liverpool], but if they come with an offer, I will definitely sit down and talk with them. It's not something that is urgent, as I have contract until 2014"
Having said that, let's hope Denmark manager Morten Olsen wasn't up to his old tricks during Euro 2012. Olsen has a history of ill-advised public statements about where he thinks Agger should be playing, and earlier this year, he indirectly advised the defender to go to Barcelona. He told Aftonbladet:
"When he is fit, Agger is a modern, top class stopper. I would like to see him next to Gerard Pique at Barcelona. That, I think, is his level."
If Olsen says such things in public, what is he advising Agger to do behind closed doors?

agger is the best defender in the world we have to renew his contrat he will be a legend here
ReplyDeleteyou get stupider every Kanwwar and your pathetic attention seeking headlines get more annoying
ReplyDeleteIf he can stay fit, Agger will become the best defender in the world...of that I have no doubt.
ReplyDeleteWould RM be had to resist - yes. Will he resist - yes....of that I have no doubt.
MOVE LIKE AGGER....only on the pitch so p*ss of Jose...
just another Benitez purchase that ends up as one of the best talents in the world. Yet some people will always have something negative to say about the man.
ReplyDeleteI'd let him him go for the right price. But a player than can come out and play will suit BR's style and I think he will be looking forward to that.
ReplyDeleteLast season, Liverpool conceded a goal every 98 minutes with Lucas on the pitch, and every 86 minutes when he was not. Liverpool only conceded every 107 minutes when Daniel Agger was on the pitch, and 71 minutes without him. When they both are on the pitch, the minutes per goal is every 130 minutes. (Stats from TomkinsTimes, which I believe derived them from the EPL Index.) According to these metrics, Agger arguably is the most valuable defender in the squad.
ReplyDeleteThese stats also mean that he might be at his peak value. Combined with the fact that he did not miss nearly as many starts as he did the year before, it might be a good time to cash in on him.
My major concern is finding a replacement near his level. Liverpool is not drawing very many players' interests right now. Furthermore, I think selling him would be a reflection of what the expectations next year really are - finish in the top half or top 8.
Agger is brilliant but keeping him fit is the major stumbling block. We have Coates who if given the chance will be I believe better than Agger in years to come. If Agger stays then great but if he goes then we need to ask the right price. I reckon if Madrid had to come calling then Agger will go. He can earn double or even more than what he is getting now if he decided to go to Madrid plus CL football will make it that much sweeter. Money talks.
ReplyDeleteIf there was the situation where it was a swop for Xabi Alonso then I would say yes please. Still cannot get over the fact that Rafa wanted to replace Alonso with Barry of all players. Shoots itself, which lead to our midfield losing its soul and we are yet to find a player that can call the shots in midfield like Alonso did.
great player if fit. he himself said somethimes he dont think his body is up to it. 30 million no less . but with his resturant and wine bar in liverpool i think he is settled here. but who knows ? dont want to c him go .martin kelly in his real position? money talks .maybe sign john terry when he gets out of nick!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletewe can all dream but xabi has gone .what a clown rafa is
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comments on Dan Agger, he is and has from the moment Rafa gave him his debut a player worthy of wearing the Liverpool FC shirt. Will he go? I seriously doubt it he's now gone and got the chance to play under a manager who believes in playing from the back, it's his dream come true when you consider that 18 months ago he was almost out of the door amazing how short sighted some people are, and yes I mean the current england manager
ReplyDeleteAgger wont leave, there are few players on the team who look as devoted and passionate as Agger, namely Gerrard Carra etc, you can see it sort of means that little more to them , dunno if I'm being naive but it just seams that way, also he has a number two he can trust in Skrtel who I also rate very highly, when those two play together in form they are an immense force to deal with.
ReplyDeleteOn the whole id say our defence is one of the best in the league Johnson gets far to much stick in my eyes and Enrique was one of our best performers last season (especially the first half)
maybe the defense was good cuz of Kenny but we will find that out soon.
ReplyDeleteYes despite having to play a/s the worst defender in the world.
ReplyDeleteWell said Chris,my thoughts exactement.
ReplyDeleteNothing about the whole club was good under Dalglish,he was the
ReplyDeleteworst thing that has happened to LFC in 50 yrs,yet he walked
away with 8 mill payoff absolutely scandalous.
I would love for Agger to be at Madrid. Mourinho was at the game where Brazil was playing against Denmark recently. I thought he was watching Moura, who was fantastic in that game, didnt expect he could also be monitoring Agger at the time haha. Agger, think of Xabi Alonso, thats all i gotta say.
ReplyDeletemany times i was upset about the way Kenny managed but lets not forget how many times the boys hit the woodwork, yes Kenny never went with a solid 11 on the field but football is a funny sport, I'm not convinced that this new guy will do much better, and now with Carrol maybe going it sounds stupid to me...
ReplyDeleteAre you saying that Martin Skrtel is the worst defender in the world? Because last year with Agger, he was immense.
ReplyDeleteWhy is Rafa a clown, when Rafa wanted to sell him, it was after two sub-standard seasons from Xabi when he was frankly poor. The following season he had an amazing season and although Rafa wanted to keep him, Xabi wanted to leave for Real Madrid, we bought him for 12m, sold him for 30m, I don't see how Rafa is a clown.
ReplyDeletei hate it when so Livpool fans state that "i would let him go for the right price" what would we benefit with 800 mill. in the bank and an average side for us it would be of no need we want trophies so we have to keep our best players cant help but imagine if we would have stayed with Xabi .Yossi and Torres add them to the squad and we would have to change our champs league song from we won it 5 tymes to 6-7 tymes but now were not even in it...
ReplyDeleteha yes too right...how many players that benitez bought that turned out a success and went on to sell for much more money??
ReplyDeleteHe net spent something like 10 million a year..he made some mistakes yes, trying to be too tactical in the premierleague was certainly one, as was the board room squables...but he is top class..i have no idea why he is out of work....he would get the best out of carroll...
would never have jt at anfield...shagging behind his team mates back? challanging the manager? racist comments controvercy?
ReplyDeleterafa was certainly not a clown...anyway can someone tell me why we are on about loaning andy carroll out..especially as he is turning into a destroyer we bought him for??
ReplyDeleteand why the hell are we buying swansea city players?? gulfi for 8m was good...but he woupdnt increase his wages from 40k..and lost out? silly.
borini?? allen?? who are they?? i know we performed like a midtable team last year..thats no excuse to start signing mid table players.
Agger is staying at Liverpool. Real Madrid have a plethora of players. Why will they need Agger?
ReplyDeleteBenitez should never have left. He was the right person to take Liverpool forward.
ReplyDeleteJohnTerry is not wanted at Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteTorres to Chelsea for 50 million, Lucas has improved, Alonso went for 30 million; the list just goes on and on. Suso is looking good in the reserves; not to mention Sterling and Shelvey; all quality signings. If Benitez was still in charge, we'll be in the Champions League now.
ReplyDeletecos no one wants a politician as their manager.
ReplyDeleteyou were just giving praise to rafa for turning no names into stars. will you not give rogers the same backing. its time to forget rafa he never would have won the league couldnt do it in 09 with the best team. lets just hope we get the right signings doesnt matter how much or where they come from as long as their the right fit.
ReplyDeleteBloody well said Benko15, mate spot on there is no need to keep getting rid of our quality players, at some point we need to stop thinking money, i am well aware that this is a business but if you get rid of your best workers than your standard drops with it.
ReplyDeleteWe should have a list of players that can go and that should be that we need to let RM know that we will see them again on the pitch and that we have given our last quality player to them and every other club for that matter.
Rafa not a clown you are , muppet you must be stevie wonder , Allen is better than any midfielder currently at Liverpool other than Gerard , he will soon become a super star , probably at arsenal or man utd because Liverpool in all honesty is just a poor mid table side
ReplyDeleteDanish person that has a strong Liverpool history hyping up a Danish player who plays for Liverpool. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteMartin S. was overheard telling Daniel A. - "Our new boss came out recently to proclaim that Jamie C. will play a vital part in our quest for premiership glory next season". In reply, Daniel added, "If the technically-inept Jamie 'Hoofer' Carragher plays, there will be no future for LFC. If that's true, Liverpool is not the club for me".
ReplyDeletewhen rodgers said carra will play a vital part he meant it...it doesnt mean he will be playing carra has his coaching badges so we have a new defensive coach. ynwa
ReplyDeletecarra is the world's worst last year ... caused us at least 5 goals because of his lack of speed in thinking and feet.
ReplyDeletefor every agger (who is oft injured), there is a diao and diouf to bolster the negative comment about the man.
ReplyDeletewas he playing when spurs stuck 4 past littlepool last season??? u lot are deluded, littlepool are mid table at best, a local pub team managed by some fella called Bren. the sooner littlepool goes bust the better, please let this be the year administration finally puts an end to the most boring useless team of hackballers ever to play in the EPL
ReplyDeletelol 1 time that happened to us all season you had 5 put past you twice last season
ReplyDeleteits called humour get a life
