"I'm relaxed" - Brendan Rodgers explains why LFC didn't sign Sigurdsson...

Gylfi Sigurdsson signed for Spurs yesterday, and in his post-signing statement, the Icelandic midfielder made it sound like it was his choice to reject Liverpool FC. Well, Reds manager Brendan Rodgers has provided some insight into the failed deal, and the reality is that Liverpool's manager refused to be held to ransom, and was happy to let Sigurdsson go.

In an interview with the official Liverpool FC site today, Rodgers said that he was 'relaxed' about Sigurdsson's decision, and explained why the deal fell through. He said:

"Gylfi did fantastic for me at Swansea. He and I spoke, and I believed that playing football was going to be the most important aspect for him, but obviously, it was important financially.

"I knew what the market was, and I wasn't prepared to pay anything over what I knew had been agreed before [between Hoffenheim and Swansea]

"Liverpool would've provided Gylfi with a wonderful opportunity to perform with a manager that he knows, at a club that is a real footballing institution, but he decided to go to Tottenham.

"I wish him all the best; he's a good kid. There's no ill feeling - we've got other targets, and we'll move on".

Spurs agreed a £6.8 deal with Hoffenheim, which is the same price Swansea had previously agreed, so the clear implication here is that Rodgers refused to meet Sigurdsson's wage demands.

As such, it's not really a case of Sigurdsson rejecting Liverpool; it's the Reds refusing to yield to excessive wage demands and basically leaving the 23-year old no choice but to run into the arms of Spurs, who were willing to pay him more money.

As Rodgers said, he 'knew the market', and he knows the player, and it was his choice not raise the salary offer. Clearly, if Sigurdsson was so vital to Rodgers' vision he would've offered him more money, and the fact that he didn't suggests that he didn't see the midfielder as an integral part of his future plans.

Having watched the interview, Rodgers seemed confident and relaxed about his choice, and his steely manner suggested that it was indeed his choice not to proceed with the deal, as opposed to being told by FSG that he couldn't raise the salary offer.

It all boils down to money: if some other club had come in at the eleventh hour and offered Sigurdsson £10k more than Spurs, he would've went there instead. He's at White Hart Lane for the money, not because he has any real interest in the club.

Taking everything into consideration, I say Bravo, Brendan! Ignoring a real 'football insitution' like Liverpool is definitely Sigurdsson's loss, and it's encouraging to see that the club has a manager at the helm who won't be held to ransom.

  1. Fortunately BR knows the market unlike our previous manager...now we wouldn't even get half the monies we spent on the british dross..

  2. Sour grapes Mr Rodgers. Tottenham have a strict wage policy which won't allow for paying over the odds for a player. I would think the truth lies somewhere between the two viewpoints.

  3. How is it sour grapes?  He's wishes Sigurdsson well at the end (and praised him effusively at the start of the interview)

  4. hahahahahahahahahaha, the past is the past Scousers. Gyfli knows a team on the up, and a team stagnating and he chose accordingly.

  5. Liverpool have been known to throw money at players, so I find it this hard to believe. Either way, we've just purchased a promosing young player who should have a bright future ahead of him. Coys.

  8. Come on you disillussioned scousers? You've not got a pot to p**s in, that's why Gylfi chose Spurs. You were out bid by Tottenham, as THEY are the club on the up and you've been on a downward slide for some years now!  COYS!!!!

  9. Pretty much what I've said all along - there is no reason to believe that we're unwilling to stump up the cash ... but it has to be for the right player. Sigurdsson was probably seen as a good value buy at the price Rodgers had agreed for Swansea. Once that change he stopped being good value so obviously Rodgers doesn't see him as worth the extra expense. The player didn't show much determination to come here so why would we bother?

I'm still 100% convinced that if we find the right target who wants to play for us then we'll meet the asking price, albeit with a little more shrewdness than shown last season. This arbitrary 30 million pound budget is just a guess thrown out by someone in the media, it sounds totally idiotic to me. Same with the idea of a new wage structure that means we won't pay players big contracts. We'll pay up for the right player and if Rodgers needs more than 30 million to get the players he knows will make us better then I think he'll get it.
Fans are getting upset because we're used to feeding off constant rumours and we're desperate for news, something to give us a feeling that things are going to change. When we fail to sign a single player and he instead goes to Spurs it's like the end of the world but seriously, we all need to keep calm and not expect things to happen instantly.

  12. You're missing the point.  Sigurdsson would've been an LFC player if Rodgers *wanted* to pay more for him.  The transfer fee agreed by Spurs is the same as agreed by Swansea, so LFC have not been 'outbid' on anything.  It comes down to the manager's desire: Rodgers didn't think Sigurdsson was worth more, so he went to Spurs, who were willing to pay what he wanted.

The reality is Sigurdsson would've gone to whatever team offered him the most money.  If, say, Man U were in for him too and offered 10k more than Spurs, he would've gone to Old Trafford.

He's at Spurs because of the money, not because he loves Spurs, and if you want players like that, you're welcome to them.

  13. "Sticks to his guts?" I think you mean sticks to his guns. As for him signing for Spurs because he would get more money then I must say you don't know what you are talking about because it would neve be a case of Daniel Levy paying too much money I assure you so it has to be for other reasons and more in line that Rogers won't pay the going rate for the player.

  14. sour grapes did you read the artical you dope? I like most LFC fans are scared off whats going to happen as os world class signing and the budget. But im pleased to here rodgers comments on this matter reasons sound simple he knows what he has to spend wasnt willing to pay stupid money not like last manager which is hurting us right now with money rodgers has to spend.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This has nothing to do with Spurs' wage structure.  You are assuming that Sigurdsson's offer from Spurs was at the ceiling of their wage structure, whereas the reality is it probably was much lower.  He's hardly going to be paid the same as Bale/Modric et al, is he?!

For argument's sake, lets say Spurs's wage limit is 100k. Sigurdsson probably got offered 50k, so it wouldn't be like Levy is paying 'too' much for him.

    ReplyDelete
  19. More like LFC just don't have the wage budget they used to, due to privious over spendng and poor management (owner). Now they have to be more carefull of where and what they now spend on.
So by SFG saying it was a differance in football terms was his way of saving LFC blushes regarding their financal problems!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I assume Keiran's use of "we" refers to Tottenham - not Liverpool.

In terms of BR's decision, I don't see how he could have made any other decision.  He has just made large demands of a Liverpool ownership and in the process ensured that he himself can demonstrate full control of the players, their wages, their transfer costs etc etc.
How would it look if during his first acquisition that he had to yield on wage demands

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is so cheap.  I thought that Brendan Rodgers had integrity!

'He could have gone to a real footballing institution, but he decided to go to Tottenham'  - This is low.  Very low.

Spurs are NOTORIOUS for their strict wage structure (Liverpool aren't), so it is far more plausible that the kid simply chose the club that he felt he would be more comfortable at.  Seeing as Spurs finished 17 points clear of Liverpool last season, it was not a mighty-hard choice to make.

    ReplyDelete
  22. this is what he said...top class...
"You can only sell the dream going forward," Rodgers said. "There's a lot of nostalgia surrounding this club, but it's important that we recognise this is 2012 and we're not in the Champions League.
"The top players want to play at that level. Steven Gerrard wants to play at that level, Jamie Carragher, they're players who have won it.
"In the coming years we'll strive towards that. If that's not enough for a player, then they will go, simple as that."

    ReplyDelete
  23. Spurs supposedly offered him 20k more per week. If that was the case, it was a no-brainer. Besides, we aren't starved for players in his position. Gerrard, Cole, Aquilani, Pacheco and Shelvey can all play there.

  27. Sounds like Rogers has a good head on his shoulders. What this says to me, be it Gylfi choose to go to Spurs for footballing reasons or not, BR didn't want to pay what he thought was over the odds. I like it. Lets get players who want to play for the club and pay the correct ammount for wages and transfer fee. I hope this trend continues. I think BR doesn't think that we need to change too much with the team and therefore will not be held to ransome by players. I see a summer of maybe 3-4 signings and that will be ok with me.

  31. I think you may be right. Rodgers can't be seen to be gnashing his teeth and wailing, likewise Sigurdsson can't exactly say "I joined Spurs for the cash". Both sides have to save face.

Hopefully Rodgers may even raise the bar with the type of player he wants to sign, because (and I don't want to patronise any 'Jacks' here) the kind of players needed to sustain Top 4 challenge should rightly be of a higher standard than the ones he targeted within his financial constraints at Swansea.

It's ok having other targets, just make sure we get them, eh?

    Time to move on.

Just tell Skrtel to give him a kick in Baltimore..............

  32. Not really sour grapes. I think it has been common knowledge for a few days that Liverpool had walked away from this deal due to wage demands.

And a "strict wage policy" does not prevent Spurs from paying over the odds for a player - within any organised wage structure an individual can still be under or over paid, due to the great scope in ability/performance/experience - and potential variance in costs. All the structure guarantees is that there is a maximum cap put on wages - and we can safely say Sigurdsson's wages would be below any such cap anyway - so this point is pretty much irrelevant.

It looks like either: Spurs have valued Sigurdsson's qualities higher than Liverpool have - and were willing to offer a better package. Which is fair enough and it is part and parcel of an open transfer market.
Or: He has chosen Spurs for footballing reasons – which is fair enough to – if somewhat surprising given his good relationship and form under Rodgers.

But I think it is safe to say Liverpool haven’t truly “lost out” – as I don’t think the boat was ever really pushed out in terms of an offer – it was more like “this is what we’re willing to pay, either take it or leave it”.

  33.  Liverpool have a bigger sponsorship deal than United (£45m a year for the kit alone. Spurs can't even get over £10m you fool!

Face it Spurs, Liverpool didn't want him.. I know you wanted to think you actually beat Liverpool at something for once, but he's a money grabber and Liverpool will find somebody made of better stuff.

  35. Liverpool should be treated with the respect it deserves. Slanderous comments from Tottenham fans are immature and uncalled for. Spurs have been in the dark shadows of teams such as Liverpool and Man U for more years than I want to remember. I am a devout Spurs fan all my life, and I am certainly under no illusions about what next season brings, good, bad or indifferent. I am cautious about the appointment of AVB, and I hope it clicks from the off, but we'll see. Anyway good luck to all next season.

    Now Now Girls

We will never know the whole truth I'm sure but the facts are for whatever reason he chose spurs over liverpool, and looking at recent records and performances whether it was money or footballing reasons he chose well.

Spurs have finished above liverpool three years on the bounce, have a brand new state of the art training facility and permission to build a new ground.

    He chose well!

  40. It is understandable why the financial goal posts changed when Liverpool got involved, as we are a bigger club than Swansea. The bigger the club, the bigger the finances the parties involved will try to demand, is usually how it works. Without CL for another season, I do think the club is trying to reign in its wage structure and being more strict in what they can offer, especially if they do not offload the current big earners. Spurs are well behind us in the ESPN sport salary table so they have possibly more room to play with than us at this moment in time, in relation to offering better wages. Putting wages aside, made sense for Sigurdsson to go to Liverpool because of Rodgers but also makes some sense to go to Spurs too, as they have a better team (although of course, this impacts on his first team chances) at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  41. What i find amusing is that posters seem to KNOW exactly what is going in behind the scenes.. Everything we say here are purely guess work. Fact is, Sig's "reason" was that he liked the ambition of the club. How laughable.  Every single 1 of the 20 clubs in the EPL has the same ambition, to win as many matches as possible. Any 1 of the top 8 clubs has the same ambition, CL,  FA Cup and winning the EPL. So Spurs ambition is never better than Liverpools ambition. At the end of the day there are 2 types of players.. Money hungry players and loyal players like SG...

@rinoneal - u say u assure us that Daniel Levy WONT pay much money? Have u spoken to him in person lol? What is OBVIOUS, is that, some players, will get what they want because their club sees them as more important than the rest, ie, Luca Modric for Spurs, Van Persy for Arsenal, Kun Aguero for City etc etc...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Why only get a training facility in 2012, wowza!!!!!, Spur's are a small club in the shadow of Arsenal.................always will be.

  43. Allow me to clarify something for you LFC fans. Tottenham's overall wages is 91m. This equates to 56% of turnover. Liverpool on the other hand spend 129m per annum. This is 70% of your turnover. This is a champions league sized wage bill for a Europa League team.

You didn't reject Sigurdsson. You couldn't afford him because of poor management in the past.

You offered Sigurdsson 30K (same as what he was on at Swansea). THFC offered 50K. The player is 22 years old but boasts a 1 in 3 goalscoring record already. He's quite clearly worth more than the money offered by LFC.

You can disagree with that if you wish. My last paragraph was subjective, the first two are fact.

Enjoy Adam and Henderson - you know the two players who have quite clearly achieved so much in the game for them to enjoy double that of what you offered Sigurdsson.

  44. Spurs fan here. Just wanted to say I know how you feel - it's happened plenty of times to us in the past - and probably will happen to us again this summer with other players. Don't beat yourselves up about it. He could turn out to be pants, and then you'll be glad you didn't get him.

It makes sense.  The lad had already agreed to move to Swansea on a set contract but decided he wanted some of that good ol' "Liverpool money" when it was time to talk with us.  The boy was a year too late.  The time of "Liverpool money" getting dished out was last year....

    ReplyDelete
  48. dont quite get it, spurs' wage structure means the top players i.e King, van der vaart will get paid 60 - 70 k per week. Levy would no way be wiling to pay sig this much. More of 40 k per week. How can liverpool not match this? It shows perhaps they are not as big as we think they are. I'm even more confussed why rafa benitez still lives in liverpool. Apparently in 'The Wirral'. He is the one who made stupid signings like aquilani, robbie keane, lucas etc etc. And some lfc supporters still chant his name in anfield. Very confused.com

    ReplyDelete
  49. To be fair, we made that sponsorship deal in 2012, whereas Manure is a bit older at least. Most likely will keep on going up the next time either club signs on a new one and so forth. Our Warrior sponsorship is I think around £25m a year. We got the best in British football but probably not for long.

We did want him but not at any price, in relation to wages.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Got to say Jamie ... We haven't agreed in the past ! But this is a great piece!

I trust BR after the point you made, He didn't see him as a vital part of his plans .
Bigger fish in the sea that are worth paying the bigger wages too .

  51. Personally think it could be a bit of both, Spurs have finished about liverpool 3 seasons running and have offered him a better deal. The odd cup run does not keep players happy these days.

What was said when LFC offered joe cole £120k a week and spurs only offered £60k or are your memories that short???

Spurs will comfortably finish about LFC again this season and increase the widening gap in my opinion. Though LFc will be good to watch, they will lack results ultimately

  52. I liked the way Rogers dealt with it. In past, we have been taken for ride by players and agents. Kenny's ridiculous transfer prices (eg. Carroll, Henderson, Downing etc) earned Liverpool a bad reputation as foolish spenders in transfer market. As a result, prices of any player shoots up as soon as Liverpool tries to buy.
It is a very good new start. We needed to show someone door to let everyone know Liverpool won't pay over the odds.

U've heard it from the horse's mouth, Brendan, what he was offered at Swansea is what he wanted to offer him, nothing more, nothing less. So, why did he not sign for Swansea then who also did not have a manager, but signed for Spuds? Reason, Spuds dangled more dollars infront of his face and he did not hesitate to sign. U can look at it from all sorts of angles Spuds, u just don't wanna face the truth because it hurts so much. As mentioned, if Chelski, Man C or anybody else would have drove in with more bags gold, he would have hitched that ride. Nothing wrong with what he done, he needs cash as well. The club could earn less or more, its not set in concrete how much more they will earn, beyond the guaranteed £25m figure. That double figure could easily be a optimistic outlook. A player who learn the basic from his master did not respect him for the sake of money. How big a player can be the bigger thing is loyality. If he is not loyal to his early manger how one can expect he will be loyal there. It is certain seeing the Spur midfield he will warm bench and get furstrated and later will give transfer request.

  62. I'm a Spurs fan, and a Northern Irishman. I like Rodgers and would have happily seen him replacing Harry. (Even tho I believe AVB has more or a player pull in terms of transfers in than Brendan R). The only thing that slightly annoyed me about this was the suggestion from Rodgers that Liverpool is a great football institution and Spurs isn't. We have been playing better football than Pool for quite sometime now and our ethos has always been style, usually at the expense of substance! If you look at Gylfi's style at Swansea, most would agree he'd fit in better at Tott than at Pool, for now anyway. Maybe Rodgers will get Liverpool playing that way as well, time will tell. Going on current style and results, Tottenham was the better choice IMO. By the end of the season it could be all change and Lpool could be above us again, who knows!

Given the choice between Spurs and Liverpool it could go either way. Put another £10k a week into the equation and there's the clincher.

  83. I can't believe all this arguing over such an average player. He had a good scoring record at Swansea, but at a big club he's not going to have the same impact and he's going to be closed down more by the teams sitting behind the ball just hoping for a point off Spurs. That's when you need quick quality players that can escape two defenders , Liverpool could do with a few of them and Gylfi isn't one.

At the end of the day, sponsorship deals will keep on going up and up in football, the more recent the deal, the more chance of it being the highest, which was my original point.

  87. simply that 'the going rate' is a matter of opinion depending how good you think the player is. Is he better than Modric, Huddlestone, etc etc, he sure isn't better than Lucas, Gerrard, etc etc

  91. Not really the debate here is it?

If you are happy with your achievements last year than why are you even entering into this conversation.

This debate is about progression. The summer is about trading and winning those battles.

You lost Sigurdsson because you offered him a pittance and tried to hang on to past glories (institution of football - do you honestly believe this crap?). Spurs have a strict wage policy, we are not Manchester City. We offered him a quite reasonable (in footballing terms) 50K a week.

Be honest, when you heard you had offered the same as Swansea you must have been a little more sympathic? All week I have seen on twitter pool fans claiming their club had offered 50K a week in comparision to Swansea's 30K and our 70k. In reality, the only club to offer him a reasonable balance of sporting and financial success was THFC. 50K a week is appropiate in today's market. The fact that you felt you could offer him half the wages of players like Adam and Henderson is comical.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Uhm...don't know about you Alan, but I wouldn't pay 50k a week, for 4 years, for a guy that's played a dozen EPL matches. Carroll scored 9 goals in his first dozen or so matches, it didn't mean he would maintain that rate. And, while we're at it, Henderson has played 100 matches, won young player of the year for his club, is an England international and is a year younger than G. S. Regardless of what G.S's form was at the end of last season, do I think Henderson has deserved a 50k a week wage package (over and and bove G.S.)? Yes I do...

    Now you

  96. Newcastle were relegated a few years ago, now look at them. To say we (Liverpool) are on the decline just shows how naive people really are. Liverpool generate more revenue overall than Spurs, have a larger fan base, achieved more last year (I'm not going to mention our history), but because of our poor finishing (note: NOT performances) we finished lower than we wanted, and lower than Spurs. Unlucky for Spurs that theres no CL football, but if the shoe was on the other foot and Liverpool had finished 4th, Spurs 8th with 2 finals (1 winners), then he would have chosen Liverpool because we'd be offering more MONEY. He stated Spurs have plans; I'd be very worried if any club didn't have plans. He mentioned world class players at Spurs, but I'd argue that Liverpool have more, and better, world class players. Matter of the fact is, he chose the extra money. If it was a difference of £10k per week as speculated, then that is £520k more per year. Even if I was a billionaire, I'd accept the £520k improved offer, who wouldn't? As Brendan said, if he really wanted him, he'd have matched Spurs at least. No disrespect to Spurs or their fans, but our problems "behind closed doors" are behind us now, and complete with a new backroom, we're determined more than ever, to prove that we are still a big, big club in world football.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Haha - OK that's far better.

Let me guess, you continued to pay some of this 90K whilst he was on loan at Lille? Same goes with Aqualini at Milan?

My point again, Liverpool are paying now for a champions league wage bill on a Europa budget.

You are now forced to attempt leveraging past glories to attract players on uncompetitive salaries.

This tactic, if continued, will see you fail to attract several players and I am sure your club, in a PR exercise, will publicise every single failed target and bemoan the 'excessive' demands of modern day players.

Perhaps on par with that other institution of football...Accrington Stanley.

    ReplyDelete
  98. well considering liverpool are paying aqiulani and joe cole 80-90k a week, i don't think you can say much about spurs paying over the odds wages wise

  101. Let's call a spade a spade
True Liverpool fans are uneducated scousers but most Liverpool fans are plastic glory hunters latching onto the success of the 80s when in reality they wished they were born a few years later and could have latched onto United.
Rodgers is pandering to these imbeciles who can't bear the fact their club is an also ran.
    But that's the reality
    Liverpool just aren't very good

    ReplyDelete
  104. Sigurdsson agreed 30k a week at Swansea and this is the figure Mr Rodgers was privy to so it must mean Spurs improved this markedly despite whatever you may say about Daniel Levy.
A few articles that are not necessarily true have intimated that most of the Spurs first team squad are on £45k-£60k so it could very well mean if Sigurdsson fits this profile, he may have got 50% to 100% more than he was willing to take at Swansea.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Spur's are welcome to view the European Cup as we have one permanently on display, that comes with winning it 5 times...............dream on Spuds??????

    ReplyDelete
  106. 2001 and 2005 were quite successful years, no? Just because we're unable to win the league, you're clutching at straws that we live in the past (Although I mentioned 2001 and 2005, that was as an example that we have had good years after the 80's too) and our fans are either uneducated or plastic glory hunters. The latter is quite funny coming from a United fan. Yeah, we're piss poor, 19-18 etc. What did United win last year? Oh. You just keep thinking that and focus on City while we become the dark horses.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Spurs fan here .... heis at Spurs, like you say because of the money. Isnt that just true of 95% of players today. There are exceptions I am sure, maybe Gerrard is one. But then there was Torres, he left Liverpool, because of the ..... money.

Sad fact, there is no loyalty anymore, ANYWHERE

    ReplyDelete
  108. Nope - how many times has Assou-Ekoto gone on in the press about how he's only at Tottenham for the money, he doesn't play for the badge, I'll stay at Tottenham "if more money is made available".... FACT - players go to Tottenham for the money.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I really like the way BR conducts himself.

Sigurdsson is a decent player but he had one good season in a team that nobody expected to do anything. He had no pressure on him. Similar to one Charlie Adam and look how useless he turned out to be when the chips were down.

If he has been bought as a replacement for Modric and has to step up to the plate, we'll see just what he's made of.

BR worked with him last season and knows what he's capable of and what he's worth.

Spurs fans who think they've got one over on us should hold their tongues for a while. You thought Pavlyuchenko had potential...and Giovanni Dos Santos...and Helder Postiga....and Milenko Acimovic

    ReplyDelete
  110. BR has thrown down the gauntlet.

If he is lying Gylfi Sigurdsson will defend his honour.

    Let's see.

  117. Don't think so.  In LFC, some Tom, Dick or Harry can't overrule KK, or purchase player without his consent.  Every purchase was wished, planned & executed by KD himself, which he agreed several times after deserving sacking.

DC was there to negotiate the terms & he was sacked not for the transfer howlers by the Manager, rather for failing to convey the message to the owners that KD is wasting money on garbage.  Don't you think that, after KD experience, FSG tried to clip the wings of the manager in transfer market, by appointing a DoF on transfer issues & a Director Technical for strategic & planning (which eventually 'll happen, I am sure)

    ReplyDelete
  118. Wonder if Brendan would of signed Andy Carroll for 35 million? HAHA

    ReplyDelete
  119. If we wait for few days we 'll get the answer.  If BR buys someone like Ramirez, Rodriguez or Lavizzi, he 'll need nothing to prove.  But, somehow, my feeling is BR 'll go to Bolton Wonders for Sigurdsson's replacement.  He was chosen ahead of a world class Manager like AVB, because AVB won't agree to chase a top 4 finish with the likes of our target from Championship or Relegation battlers.

By the way, I personally feel that, playing under AVB, instead of someone Brendan Rogers itself is good enough motivation for a 23 years old developing player.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Thanks David.

Both are great clubs, LFC with a much better history but, Spurs having a slightly better present.  I don't think GS was paid over the board money by Levy, Yank owners are not like oil rich Russian or Arab, with lot of easy money.  Spurs has a better team, based in London & definitely has a better Manager.

I was really upset when FSG didn't appoint AVB & we have started to pay for that already.  I think, AVB 'll take Spurs to CL, while we 'll be looking for our next manager, come May '13, but AVB 'll not be available then.

Hope not though, & I am a LFC fan for 29 years & counting.

  122. Talking of mancs, has anyone taken into account that gylfi sigurdsson is a huge man utd supporter?

Anyhow, given that Rodgers KNEW exactly how much Swansea were gonna pay him, how would it have looked to the outside world to have 'given in' to any and every demand that player/agent makes. Not great for any negotiating in any transfer window!
Someone earlier made the comment that when going for a more prestigious club, the price will rise.
Yes.....but, the 'gentlemens sgreement' is that you use PR to do it; it's not obvious that your ripping them, even though everyone knows it! Ie when man city go in for a player they are suddenly worth double and want 4 hundred million per week, that's ok because it's done in a certain way where both parties come out looking good.
Here, with sigurdsson it's not the same, one cannot levy that increase without BR and LFC management and owners looking like total mugs.

Finally, we have a tough manager, one who I wouldost certainly like to have on my team if I had the choice, well done to LFC, no ransom demands met, the hostage takers are watching!

I look forward to Liverpool making more dazzling signings such as Carroll, Henderson and Downing. Truly the level at which Liverpool choose to operate. Expensive and crap.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Solksjaer was a Liverpool supporter. Carra was a Everton fan. Not always/necessarily a huge factor a player's childhood support of a club when making a decision as to which club to join, it seems. That is the cold (or smart, depending on outlook) nature of football.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Lavezzi has gone to new moneybags PSG.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Charlie Adam had a lot more pressure at Blackpool (than Sigurdsson) because the whole team was set up to get him at his best as he was their main playmaker. Whereas Sigurdsson was one of quite a few equal parts of the Swansea tactics, as the likes of Allen and Britton were just as important/vital to the possession style of Swansea. So different circumstances in that regard, between the two. At Liverpool, Adam was a mere cog of the KK's tactics but he wasn't one of the key players in those tactics, at Blackpool he was. Maybe too early to judge but I feel Adam, like Riquelme (no way am I saying Adam is anywhere near as good as him!), needs the whole team playing to his tune to get the best out of him. This is something that is unlikely to ever happen at this club and rightly so, in my view.

To be fair, every club has had its stinkers when it comes potentially quality players such as Cheyrou, Tallec, Franny Jeffers,,.....Bebe! (Sorry had to put that one in there, as that still one stills amuses and bemuses me!)

  134. That's all well and good originalchan, but we don't know what goes on in someone's head, their subconscious is always working.
Given that he knows BR so well and that he gave him a big chance when his original club couldn't get rid of him quick enough.
The pull between them is obviously there and I'm sure an agreement to up the wages if/when performance decreed would have been discussed.

    And yet......

    Everyone's different.

    Just saying';-)

    ReplyDelete
  135. Exactly, we don't know what has gone in his head or behind close doors, yet you implied that we should take into account that he is a Man United supporter.......on the basis of very little in relation to the Sigurdsson deal, bit like a tabloid journo's musings in that sense. So I'm basically saying that a person's childhood support of a club doesn't always necessarily play a part in a footballer's decision to move clubs on the basis of the numerous examples. Its hardly a surprise that a big deal hasn't been made of his childhood support as it usually isn't a big deal. Just saying... :)

I don't think Hoffenheim were that desperate to get rid of him when Swansea took him loan as I recall the likes of Swansea, Celtic, etc, wanted him on a transfer but Hoffenheim would only let him go on a loan. On top of that, you got Babbel saying in the last few months that he would like him back, if a move doesn't work, as he wants to work with him. The lad was their top league scorer in 2010/11 but he wasn't a first XI player for them, though he was only 20/21 at the time. He wanted to play regular first team football and basically he was in UK since he was like 14/15, so it was more him that wanted to leave Hoffenheim and come back to the UK, rather than the club wanting him out desperately. So I don't think at all that Hoffenheim were as desperate as you make out to sell him then and now.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Agree with you.

But it's 'go', Jamie, not 'went'!

  138.  I still fancy all of those 3 players as a Liverpoolfan so you can think whatever you like.....

    ReplyDelete
  139. If a player wants to leave, isn't a first XI player AND wants to go to a foreign league, the fee isn't likely to be big (unless he is a teen and is hyped up to be the next Messi, which Sigurdsson wasn't), no matter how much you want to keep him. The combination of those three factors  (wants to leave, not a regular and leave for foreign shores) together makes it hard for selling club to set a high fee. I don't think Hoffenheim were desperate to sell but the circumstances meant they didn't have much room to play with, in terms of demanding a higher fee.

  143. Juvenile series of posts here. Tone has really dropped to schoolyard taunts.

Sigurdsson chose a few grand extra over reuniting with a manager he has done well with. He may one day rue that decision, it's a bit of a gamble - not knowing what AVB is like first hand, but I think he will do well at Spurs.

Professional footballers have a very short career, so he is entitled to sign for whoever he wants.

I wish him all the best, although I hope Spurs get a good hammering at Anfield.....

    ReplyDelete
  144. Our owners actually have a strict finanical policy, and Kenny and Commoli were sacked partly due to their negligent use of finance

    ReplyDelete
  145. Tottenham are "on the up" because they aren't underachieving anymore as they have done for lets face it, decades, they have had the players there and have flattered to decieve, now they are in the top 6-8 in the league, they think they are the next big thing, which is funny, cause the manager that took them there is ironically no longer their manager.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Let's face it, Sigurdsson couldn't even make it at Hoffenheim, he was loaned out for several seasons, he agreed a wage with Swansea, the deal was almost done, and then a team come in offering more than he is worth at this stage he jumps at the chance, which means it's about the money, if Tottenham had offered the same amount, then it would be for footballing reasons, however it's about the money, he was a big fish in a small pond at Swansea, and that was only for 6 months, but will he drown now?

    ReplyDelete
  147. Who does Tottenham have that are world class? Modric, he is leaving, Bale, will be leaving if not this season, then next, Van der Vaart, leaving. No one else. Liverpool, Reina, although didn't have his best season, he is still world class, Daniel Agger, world class, when Martin Skrtel plays alongside Agger, he is also world class, Glen Johnson, borderline world class, Lucas, world class, Gerrard, world class, Suarez, world class. How many World Cup or Champion's League champions to Tottenham have? 0 I believe. Liverpool? At least 3. Plus, we have recently won a tournament, even if it was a "Mickey Mouse" tournament, it is still a trophy

    ReplyDelete
  148. Yes it is and always will be!!!

    ReplyDelete
  149. You must be confused mate if you think Lucas is a stupid signing. Lucas has turned into a world class defensive midfielder, considering when he signed, he was an attacking midfielder and had just won the award for best player in the Brazilian league, the youngest player to win that award by the way. Going by stats alone, he is the best defensive midfielder not only in England, but in Europe. Aquilani is a very good player, I remember in his first season, when he came back from injury in the second half of the season, he ripped Tottenham to shreds. The fans still love Rafa because he was an excellent manager for Liverpool, we also still love Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, nothing to be confused about there. The reason he lives on the Wirral is for one reason and one reason alone, because he wants to. Everyone else has been saying that GF was offered 50k by Tottenham, we offered him more like 30k, not because we don't have the money, if he was worth it, we would, BR who had previously worked with him, not once, but twice, he also worked with him at Reading, made a judgement call that he wasn't worth 50k a week, after all, Ledley King is a senior player, when he first started at Tottenham, he wasn't on anything close to 50K. Van der Vaart in my opinion is a better player than the so called 60-70K that you put on his head. Bale is on 100K. You clearly don't know the workings of any team.

    ReplyDelete
  150. i can tell one thing after looking at all fan's comment that now days it's rarely a player wud choose liverpool over spurs or even newcastle only bcoz of our legendary history so it's better to pay some money to gud talents & prove that still WE ARE LEGENDS of europe..i dn't blame siguardson bcoz recent history worth than anything..

    ReplyDelete
  151. They are great at flattering to decieve

    ReplyDelete
  152. You do realise that BR has some footballing clout as he worked under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, he knows how big clubs work. AVB tried his hand at one big club in England and frankly failed, he lost the support in his dressing room, and will no doubt do the same at Spurs. I for one am glad that AVB wasn't appointed as Liverpool manager. If you think we will be looking for a new manager come May '13, you are not in fact a LFC fan as your name suggests as true LFC fans support our managers and players.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Why do you use y for everything? Please use correct grammar, makes things a lot easier to read

    ReplyDelete
  154. Now you got AVB who had a fantastic team at Chelsea, who lost his dressing room and was fired after not even a full season in charge, and Chelsea finished in 6th. Cue the sarcasm, good luck Spurs

    ReplyDelete
  155. Truth is, both Cole and Aquilani are proven talents, Sigurdsson is not. THAT is the difference. The better comparison is a player like Shelvey for instance, a player who is around the same age, has around the same amount of talent and potential, and yet Shelvey isn't on that kind of money yet.

    ReplyDelete
  156. One cannot levy unless it is Daniel Levy

    ReplyDelete
  157. Wonder what that has to do with anything? Andy Carroll was a Dalglish signing and only reason he cost 35 million is because Torres was sold for 50 million

    ReplyDelete
  158. You should be ashamed of yourself, not supporting our new manager, even before the first game, let alone the first season. The transfer window has only just technically been open for a few days, I'm sure there are targets. And btw, Chelsea has gone to Bolton Wanderers twice for transfers, namely Anelka and Cahill, I think Rodgers would more likely go to Wigan for Moses. "Oh no, but Wigan is a small club"

    ReplyDelete

For me, club comes first & the bitter truth is that, a young talented player has rejected a bigger club under a Manager who has brought him under lime light.  He had a chat with another Manager on his first day of appointment & was convinced enough to join; tells lot about the 2 Manager.

Money has little to do in it; Levy 'll not pay much higher than what GS is worth & a 23 years old budding player won't bother to join better manager/club just for 5-10k/week more; anything around 50k/week after tax is already lot, lot of money.

  167. Old LFC owner Tom Hicks pretty much bankrupted his baseball team, the Texas Rangers, by outrageously overpaying a two players, Alex Rodriguez and Chan Ho Park. John Henry, current LFC owner, tried to get Rodriguez for the Red Sox for a reasonable price but couldn't and Hicks ultimately paid the Yankees to take Rodriguez off his hands. Hicks' baseball example seems to have made John Henry cautious about throwing money at players  deemed "absolutely essential". John Henry in fact withdrew from bidding negotiations on some occasions rather than get involved in a bidding war. Henry and Rodgers seem to agree in the principle of placing a value on a player and not exceeding that value.

  168. Liverpool FC has a glorious history. None can deny it. However, FSG is trying to build LFCs base of support and gain sponsorship money so that the club can compete with the best.
