Who cares? 11 reasons why LFC fans should be glad Sigurdsson chose Spurs...

After signing for Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, Gylfi Sigurdsson argued that he chose Spurs ahead of Liverpool because of the London club's 'world class players', ability to play 'good football' and future 'ambition'. That's fair enough, and I wish Sigurdsson well, but Liverpool fans shouldn't be too disheartened by losing out on the Icelander, and here are 11 reasons why.

1. Not key to Swansea's style of play. Yes, Sigurdsson scored some goals, but it was pass-masters like Joe Allen, Leon Britton, Ashley Williams and Angel Rangel who really made Swansea tick.

2. Only at Swansea for five months (!). The club was playing superb football for ages before he arrived. Five months of the Premier League experience is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

3. No feeling for LFC or its history. Sigurdsson had the chance to join one of the world's most prestigious and respected clubs, and if the attraction of Liverpool wasn't good enough for a player with only five months of Premier League experience, then quite frankly, I'm glad he signed for Spurs.

4. Lack of experience. As we've seen with Andy Carroll, buying players based on only half a season of Premier League football is a risky proposition. Sigurdsson did well for Swansea, but there's no guarantee that he'll be able to replicate that form at a top club.

5. Brendan Rodgers let him go. If Rodgers really saw Sigurdsson as a vital component in his LFC revolution, he would've moved heaven and earth to sign him. He didn't, which to me means that he saw the 23 year old as a decent player to have, nothing more, nothing less. Indeed, in an interview with LFC TV today, Rodgers confirmed that he 'was not prepared to pay more' than what had been previously agreed for the player, which suggests he didn't feel Sigurdsson was worth the extra money.

6. 10% conversion rate. This is significantly lower than some of LFC's other midfielders, including Gerrard (23%); Maxi (23%); Bellamy (19%). Okay, his rate is superior to the likes of Henderson and Downing, but that's hardly a difficult achievement.

7. 43% shooting accuracy. Only 32 of Sigurdsson's 73 shots for Swansea were on target. A creditable amount, but no better than LFC's other players, including: Shelvey (43%); Bellamy (52%); Kuyt (45%); Johnson (47%); Henderson (45%); Gerrard (52%); Maxi (47%);

8. Not a genuine game-changer/match-winner? The Swans failed to win 12 of the 19 games (63%) in which Sigurdsson played, 8 of which were defeats, including a 4-game losing streak in April and only 2 wins in the final 9 league games of last season. Where was Sigurdsson's individual impact for the team then?

9. Top-level impact? Sigurdsson's goals came against: West Brom, Wigan, Fulham, Blackburn and Spurs, which suggests that he finds it easier to score against the poorer teams in the league. Conversely, he failed to score or assist against Liverpool, Newcastle, Man United, Man City and Chelsea (granted, this point is rather tenuous, but what the hell!)

10. Poor assist rate: Sigurdsson's assist rate for Swansea was one every 6.3 games, which is not great. Extrapolated over a season, that would be 6-7 assists in 38 league games. Stewart Downing - an experienced Premier League player - got 8 assists in his final season for Aston Villa, but ended up with a big fat zero in his first year at Anfield.

11. Mercenary? According to LFC Legend Steve Nicol - and then later confirmed by Rodgers himself - Sigurdsson's wage demands derailed Liverpool's bid, which suggests he's a bit of a mercenary. In public, he'll say the usual stuff about ambition etc, but the reality is he went to London for the money.

Stats: OPTA

Don't get me wrong - Sigurdsson is a good player, and he would've been a decent squad-enhancer at Liverpool, but losing out on him is not the end of the world! There is no bitterness here, just an acknowledgement that life goes on, and the loss of the Sigurdsson is not some paralyzing blow to LFC's future progress (!)

Spurs are a great club, and like Rodgers, I - and I'm sure the majority of LFC fans - wish Sigurdsson well.

Having said that, I hope he has a crap game when Liverpool play Spurs (that's if he can even gets into the team...)

REMINDER: Spurs fans are very welcome on this site, but please debate in a civil manner. Anyone hurling insults/derogatory comments will be permanently banned.

  6. I agree with the majority of article - as a Spurs fan, my feelings would be similar had we not signed him - however, the reason you should care, is that a player has chosen Tottenham over Liverpool - not sure this would of been the case a couple of years ago. how much further behind can you afford to go? i'd be worried.

  7. I never saw any point in Liverpool signing Sigurdsson because it would have meant hindrance in progress of Shelvey who has shown potential to be a top player. Also i would be delighted if Aquilani is given a chance at Liverpool instead of signing another midfielder.

  8. Get a grip, sour grapes much? Enjoy mid-table mediocrity, history means absolutely nothing to modern day footballers its all about the here and now. Its a sorry state of affairs but we all know its going to get worse before it gets any better. Liverpool fans need to realise they aren't the same team they used to be and with the Manchester clubs and Chelski with their spending power they wont be for a long time.

  9. Lol bitter, we have a wage structure in place which up until Bale was around at max 70k, so it's not like we offered him an ridiculous amount. You lot splashed 22mil on Henderson and 35mil on Carroll, you may see where I am going with this. Plus 3 years we ended up above you.

  10. This is laughable. If he had been in a red shirt you'd write 11 reasons spurs should be gutted!

    1. He was 8mil or less. Downing and Hendo 20 mil each haha
    2. He's 22... Young talent
    3. Reading player of the year. Scored against you in FA cup.
    4. Not stupid wages (not over 100.000) you have no money after paying joke wages to awful players.
    5. He scored lots of goals and will improve spurs. If he scored 15 in a season that's 13 more than Modric!

    C'mon sigmonster!! You're the man

  11. only 11 points...get a grip....we bought him so he could enjoy a team that plays football...both clubs going in a new direction your just bitter cos your pants

    Good evening my Liverpool chums,
A Happy Pre Season to you all and thanks for the first present - a fine young iclandic chap with lots of characters in his name for shirt sales!
I tend to agree that he is not the finished article and will need time to develop, but some of the arguements you have made here could just be levied at your new manager. After all, he was in charge of Swansea!
And as for your point about only scoring against the poorer teams (including Spurs!!) how many points did you take off those teams?? - I'll tell you - Blackburn 4, Wigan 1, West Brom 3, Fulham 0 Spurs 1! Thats why King Kenny went and thats why you can spout about your history but currently you are what you are - mid table and will be next year too!

Re no.7: 32/73 shots is not 32%, that would be 32/100. 32/73 is around 43%. Only a few percent lower than your apparent superstars (one of whom you've already let go). Stupid scousers.

  21. 9 stupid reasons, 2 possibly valid ones. He might not have been the perfect signing for LFC, but you sure seem bitter that he didn't come.

  25. I somewhat equate it to two guy's ogling  an ugly bird outside a club at 3.00 A.M, One makes a move and the other one hesitates slightly without ever being that interested to start with. The ugly bird just wants some attention and off he goes!
For a minute the other guy is a little upset until he takes a look at what he just missed out on and then it hit's him, At some point the first guy is going to wake up and think "What the f#ck did i just do"?
Morale of this story is....... Be careful what you wish for!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Exactly, thanks.  & I don't this Levy 'll pay him much higher than what he is worth either.

He went for the improving club with a better Manager; as a LFC fan, actually I am quite worried.  An Iceland International is now rejecting us, we might have to confine us with in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, North Ireland & Championship is England in coming days.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Perhaps the mistakes made by Liverpool in the past is why Rodgers did not want to pay more. The new season is coming and all errors of the past can be corrected... will be interesting to see who he does buy now!

  34. im a lfc fan and id much rather have gylfi (£7m fee, wages prob at a guess £60k) over downing £20m fee and prob 90k wages. same for henderson although i think time is on his side in his career to improve. we are shocking at finding quality players for cheaper expenditure, unlike spurs ( gareth bale from southampton, van der vaart £8m, adebayor on loan, modric etc etc) and newcastle (papiss cisse, demba ba, krul, cabaye) for example.
We sign charlie adam, downing, aqualani, joe cole..... awful to be quite honest. We prob been paying aqualani whilst on his 2 year holiday in italy.
I hope this time the structure at lfc has changed. many fans are fed up with what seems, the ineptitude of the transfer/contractual negotiations

Small club ...great squad at the moment..with  great fans ..i always enjoy your support at anflield ..but dont forget your place ..everton ...and arsenal will always be bigger and more established than yourselves ...p.s 22 mill for henderson ?? stop reading comics ..theyre not true you know !!

As a Spurs fan with a brain, I can't disagree too violently with any of the reasons. Players that are developing are always a gamble to some extent. This one may pay off, it could just as easily backfire.

We've either bought a bargain or a cheap flop but as we've brought some seriously expensive flops such as Bentley, Gio and Pav it pretty much puts us in the same boat as you with Downing Carroll and one or two others.

If there is any kudos in this deal for Spurs fans at all, it's that he picked us over you, but that only matters if he's a success and if his wage demands were so great that you felt unable to match them and we did then I'm amazed as we're not know for paying big wages.

    ReplyDelete
  39. so he only scores against inferior opposition didnt he score against liverpool for reading and yes he scored against us but we finished 4th in the league and were robbed of champions league football just because chelski won it and we have finished above liverpool on the last 4 occasoins so yes we are better than you lot and you have alot of catching up to do .

  40. Silly artical, heres one great piont for you all you "mighty" yids, can anyone of you tell me whats the point of a team existing if they NEVER win anything??????

  42. Wow spurs fans Thnik they going to win something this year spurs where never the top club in England or one of them and won't be going forward good luck with avb who couldn't even do the job with Chelsea

    ReplyDelete
  43. i used to like spurs but because they got into the champions league once, they think they deserve to be there. Liverpool, both manchester clubs, chelsea and arsenal have things to brag about and because Spurs signed one player ahead of Liverpool, some fans think that Spurs are now a fantastic team. I'm not saying Liverpool are anyway near perfect but neither are Spurs

    ReplyDelete
  44. 32 out of 73 on target would be 43% accuracy. Do they not teach maths on merseyside?

    ReplyDelete
  45. You've got it all wrong. Spurs fans don't think they're entitled to anything, we're not bigging ourselves up, or at least I'm not. I didn't write an article called "11 reasons why we're better than Liverpool cause we bought a player ahead of them". Liverpool fans just seem to come across as very chippy. I couldn't give a fuck about Liverpool personally.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh Dear poor bin dippers

    ReplyDelete
  47. We spent 15mil on Bentley, yeah didn't work out. But at the end if the day in the last 5 years our net spend is 6mil or so according to Sky Sports. Spurs are run extremely well by Levy.

We haven't broken the bank for him. I doubt our wage structure has taken a big hit either.

I never once compared histories you are one of the top clubs in Europe no doubt and I am even a little jealous of your history.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Really, Tottenham aren't exactly 'great'. To be honest Spurs will always be left behind Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea. As for Arsenal and Newcastle, Liverpool will not 'always' be left behind because quite frankly without RVP, arsenal are nothing and newcastle will not be in position they are in 10 years time

    ReplyDelete
  49. Mitchworldtrip, and Manure will always be a bigger greater, better supported club than Everpool hahahahaha.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Spurs fan here.

You make some good points above, but I do believe that points 4 & 6 don't really apply.

Point 4: The price for "Sig" is no where near what Liverpool paid for Carroll or some of the other young English talent. I'm sure most Liverpool fans would agree that a maximum of 20 mil for Carroll was what should have been paid, considering he is a young English player with potential. 35 mil was ridiculous, but hindsight is 20/20.

Point 6: I think comparing "Sig" to the likes of Gerrard and Maxi is unfair. He is much younger and does not anywhere near as much experience in the Premier League (or any league as a matter of fact) in respect to them.

It's also important to note that "Sig" is NOT considered to be our big signing. He is a young squad player who we aim to develop into a proper Premier League footballer. He will add depth to our squad, providing cover and starting when needed.

    Best of luck next season,
    Elwehbi @ibleedhotspur

A teacher starts a new job at a primary school on Merseyside and, trying
to make a good impression on her first day, explains to her class that
she's a big football fan and supports Liverpool. She asks her students
to raise their hands if they, too, are Liverpool fans.

Everyone in the class raises their hand except one little girl. The
teacher looks at the girl with surprise and says: "Mary, why didn't you
    raise your hand?"

"Because I'm not a Liverpool fan miss," she replies. The teacher, still
shocked asks:"Well, if you're not a Liverpool Fan, then who are you a
    fan of?"

"I'm a Spurs fan, and proud of it," Mary replies. The teacher can't believe her ears. "Mary, how come you're a Spurs fan?"

"Because my mum and dad are from North London and are Spurs fans, so I'm a Spurs fan too!"

"Still," says the teacher, annoyed, "that's no reason for you to be a Spurs fan as well. You don't have to be like your parents all the
time, do you? What if your mum was a prostitute and your dad was a drug
addict and car thief. Would you be like them then?"

"No," smiles Mary, "I'd be a Liverpool fan."

  53. You are a cock. He chose Spurs because the scousers are a has been, mid table team with no wolrd class players. Except it this aint the 70's anymore and no one wants to play for Liverpool except average players, hence why you got an average mid table manager

    ReplyDelete
  54. Shelvey has shown nothing in a L'pool shirt, very poor player who Rogers will not have anywhere near his first team

    ReplyDelete
  55. so brendan didn't fancy him? strange how he signed him at reading then at swansea and tried at liverpool ha ha ha

    ReplyDelete
  56. you talk as if Liverpool are the only club to have a history
tbh I'd rather just focus on the football that's happening today rather than bang on about past glories, but let's play this game for a minute:
Only non-league club to win the FA Cup?
1st team to do the double?
1st English club to win a European trophy?
Winner of the first UEFA Cup?
1st club to win 2nd and 1st divisions back to back?
First club to play pass and move football when the rest of you were just lumping long balls up to your strikers? (RIP Arthur Rowe)

The answer to all these? Tottenham Hotspur
Other clubs may do better than us, but never forget we did it all first!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I guess that is all we need to know about you Karl, except for your crap spelling. I support Spurs not because they win things, but because they are, have always been, and always will be my team. I inherited my support from my parents, and have passed it on to my sons. I guess now that Liverpool are mid-table mediocrity, you be moving on to a team that is winning things, Manchester City would be a good bet.

    ReplyDelete
  58. OK - potentially unique perspective
(although I did get bored mid-way through reading the responses, so maybe not)
but I had always followed Swansea as my local team, but Spurs as a team I grew
    up supporting.

    In short, I am
happy that we signed Gylfi as, from what I saw watching the Swans, and all of
my die-hard Jack mates comments, know that he showed true quality last season.

A lot of the points in the article were
    rather moot.

He wasn’t key to the Swansea style of play,
that was instilled by Martinez years ago.

The 5 moths he was there, he was fantastic
and all Swans fans were desperate to land him permanently.

No feeling for LFC or its history – with all
due respect, so what..? Many clubs had a history but are now languishing in
lower leagues. History is history. Players are more concerned with recent form,
and Liverpool have ‘underperformed’ on that basis (I expect potential abuse,
but honestly believe that it’s not deserved).

The statement from Rodgers suggested that a
‘market price’ had been agreed to join Swansea, and that same price was on
offer to come to Liverpool – the Swans wage cap I extremely limited, I would be
surprised if he was offered more than £15k pw. That puts Spurs gazumping into
context if Liverpool were only willing to match Swans’ original offer!

As Jaimie admits, the other points are
really just thrown in there to bolster the view. He offers potential, but at
the moment is a prospect and not a ‘star’ signing.

What I would say to all the Liverpool fans,
is that Rodgers is a quality manager. It might be too soon for him to step up
to the big stage, but he is definitely a ‘hot’ prospect (I hope it’s not
another AVB at Chelski – note the irony)

    ReplyDelete
  59. He is a talent. I match him up to what we had with Kranjcar. I don't think Liverpool fans need to feel bitter. This is part of the game. Players choose teams judged their last season or two. Liverpool simply have to get back to playing attractive football and then they'll look appealing again. As a spurs supporter though I am really glad we managed to get a good young player with a lot of future potential.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Look to the future not at the past. I know it looks bleak for LFC. For spurs there is a new ground going to be developed, new training facilities now being used. Also we are in the ascendency, whereas Liverpool are in decline!

  64. Its called journalism... some fans feel let down by not signing him .. jamie as always writing what needs to be said .. nice read :-)

    ReplyDelete
  65. You may be good at maths but not English, where does Jaimie mention 32% re no.7?????

    ReplyDelete
  66. You Spurs fans seem to forget that Brendan Rogers more or less had the deal done for Sig with Swansea before he came to Livepool, so he will have known what the transfer fee, players wages etc would have been mentioned by Hofenheim (they really thoght a lot of him by sending him on loan). As soon as Spurs came along his agent starts asking for more money so all this loyalty with BR goes out the window. He's just another football mercenary and thats what is wrong with the game nowadays - Greed.
well I hope he fits in at Spurs and does well because I am sure we will see at diferent Andy Caroll, and Jordan Henderson can only get better and I'm sure BR will give the likes of Sterling, Coady some game time this season.
Spurs will loose Modric (excellent player), King (leader and was an excellent player), Parker (getting on and suffering from injuries too often(like Gerrard). So I will look forward to this season to see how it pans out.

  67. he must go suck eggs, he cant be bigger than the KOP!!!

  68. Full credit to Brendan for what he did at Swansea, but now he's at Liverpool, he will need to lose the small club mentality regarding values and wages. Hehas to remember that he's playing with the big boys now.
By the way I think Liverpools biggest mistake was getting rid of Kenny, and will be surprised if Brendan will improve your position.

  71. hahahaha i feel sorry for you livercunt fans

    ReplyDelete
  72. Oh, so you have heard of net spend then?? You may be interested to be reminded then that Carroll's fee was subsisidised by Torres' ridiculous transfer fee, was sanctioned just ahead of the new ffp rulings window taking place, so don't have any impact on the club long term.

And Henderson isn't breaking the bank for Liverpool either, who just happen to be debt free, yet that's all everybody wants to bleat on about, as if it makes any difference to what is going on at your own clubs.

    ReplyDelete
  73. bet the 10% conversion rate was 10 out of 60 odd as well lol

    ReplyDelete
  74. look up Tottenham's trophy haul if you want to see pathetic...

    ReplyDelete
  75. Can someone translate this into English please?

    ReplyDelete
  76. tbh most of the reasons are a stretch really. The guy is a midfielder and he was scoring goals - pass completion percentages mean nothing if none of the passes are going to actually hurt the opposition, and you don't have anybody to stick the ball into the back of the net, which is what Sigurdsson did and what made him key to Swansea's play. He'd also proven himself as a goalscoring midfielder before joining Swansea, so it's not like it was just a short term fluke.

Well done to Spurs, they've most likely snapped up a very good player here. Just give them credit, move on and hope that we move on with somebody even bigger and better.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Spurs fan.  Come on guys, we love our respective teams to bits and we have had some great fixures in the past and will have more in the future. We dont need this

    ReplyDelete
  78. We've won more FA Cups than you. We were the first British team to win a UEFA trophy and the first club to win the league and cup double this side of the war...

May not be as illustrious as Liverpool (but who cares about them nowadays anyway) but it's certainly not pathetic.

Bam. Schooled. Must be quite disconcerting (look it up) for you considering you're a Scouser, y'know...being 'schooled'.

    ReplyDelete
  79. tbh the article does look pretty bitter and it's all unnecessary.

Just give Spurs credit for picking up the guy they wanted, move on and hope that we move on with somebody even bigger and better.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Haha , where as spurs have a manager with 6 months premier league experience , I'm looking forward to AVB looking like a fool again next season

    ReplyDelete
  81.  I agree who cares about an average player, we got Rodgers..

I can’t wait till Liverpool go back to being the most attractive club
in England and play the best football. Rodgers couldn’t possibly do it
in one season tho, so give him time, even if things start bad with the
difficult fixtures Liverpool have. In Rodgers We Trust..

  84. Who cares about Liverpool? Judging by the amount of attention paid to us by fans of opposing clubs, including yourself visiting a blog called Liverpool-Kop, I think it's fair to say that plenty of ppl do... lol

Who told you that I'm a scouser though anyway? Liverpool just happen to have fans all over the world you know - travel a bit and see for yourself.

    Bladow!

  86. The point I am trying to make is we have spent not a great deal compared to what is spent on some players. The wages won't be a lot compared to current wages being offered around by some clubs, especially if you knew anything about Daniel Levy and how he operates. So I would be surprised if this deal was about money. if we did trump you wages it would not be by a great deal.

  91. looks like someone took the Siggurdson Liverpool snub a little too hard.  When i  initially saw the fuss being made about the player i got excited until i found out that the players is from Iceland. I know for a fact that they do not produce a lot of dominant foot-ballers from there. Last big name i am aware of was Eider Gudjohnsen. Maybe Siggurdson is the next big thing in a long time from there but compared to the other talent we can get from Latin America or Brazil he is a waste of time. There youngster unknown  currently playing pick up foot-ball on the beaches of Sao Paulo who could outrun and out dribble and outscore Siggurdson all day if need be. We just have not identified them yet. The club could definately do better than him that's for sure.

No one told me - but I imagine only a Scouser could stick by Liverpool these days. Maybe you're considering moving your allegiance to the power in Pool these days...Everton.

Bladow isn't a word. Only a Scouser would think it was. (the urban dictionary, contrary to Scouse belief, doesn't count...)

He joined spurs cos you lot is shite, take gerrard, reina and suarez out of your team and you is wigan. Look at the clubs, who runs them and how there run and at the moment only one of them looks a contender and if I was offered an extra 20 grand a week, see ya

Gio and Pav expensive flops? We paid less than 5M for Gio and will undoubtedly recoup at least that amount this summer if he is sold. Pav we managed to get about what we paid for as well, hardly expensive.

  99. rodgers has explained it - he agreed a 6.8 million fee while at swansea and agreed wages. That's all he was prepared to pay at liverpool. Why should he pay any more just because liverpool have more money than swansea. Spurs were prepared to pay more so good luck to em. no need to be pricks about it though. spurs fans used to be funny and self deprecating, quite an endearing quality. Couple of seasons on the top table suddenly you think you're real madrid. get a life. enjoy it? yeah! smug it up? nah!

Liverpool have loads of centre mids with cole and aquilani coming back so we don't need him as much as you do. especially with modric about to jump ship. hope he turns out to be a decent player cos the premiership will miss modric and if he can replicate some of his qualities it's gotta be a good thing. But please, please don't come on here later saying 'we told you so' or 'we discovered this guy  . . . ' . if it wasn't for our manager no one outside of reading would have a clue who he was

    ReplyDelete
  100. Kenny needed to go. Liverpool were lacking creativity and very boring in their approach 90% of the time. I'm a Spurs fan, and I always mention to my Liverpool supporting friends that I miss the Liverpool from the Benitez days. They were way more exciting to watch.

Rodgers, if he pulls off the same Swansea approach, can bring a lot of that creativity and flair back to the Reds.

Note: it's strange to even mention that Swansea's style of play is something to be replicated. Hats off to Rodgers for that.

    ReplyDelete
  104. ok, my point is that Liverpool may have overspent on certain players, but we are not alone in that by any means. And the club remains financially sound, so I don't understand everybody's obsession with our spending.

Honestly, all I can see from this transfer deal anyway is that Sigurddsson felt that he deserved higher wages for going immediately to a bigger club, rather than using Swansea as a stepping stone to the same destinations, LFC/Rodgers decided against offering that raise as a matter of principle and Tottenham had no qualms in offering what they perceived to be at or below market value wages still for a good young player. No biggy, life goes on.

  105. christ almighty!! would have expected shite like this from a united fan but not a liverpool.  he had 4/5months at swansea, his first time playing in the premeirship, he's still young and naming a spurs under poor teams.

  107. Iceland has a population of about 300,000......no great surprise they don't produce many star players. Your comment is idiotic. We all know Brazil produces lots of quality ball-players but no premier league side is going to fill their squad with them....for starters work permit rules won't allow it. This guy is a squad player for 7-8m which is standard spend on a half decent premiership player who's only 22 years old. It's potentially a decent acquisition. By the way, this article is comedy gold....how someone can write this stuff without realising how bitter they sound is beyond me.

    ReplyDelete
  108. ...yeah cuz spurs haven't got any midfielders. Tool.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Britton and Allen were vital to their play last season but it can also take complimentary players who can also add something different to make a team like that good. Fabregas and Pedro suits Spain's and Barca's football as they are technically good but also have a eye for goal and can be direct in their movement in relation to goalscoring, whereas someone like Iniesta less driven like that, in relation to scoring, despite being crucial to the possession. Sigurdsson has a eye for goal, despite being a rotational player, he was top league scorer for Hoffenheim in a season. He scored Swansea 7 goals in 17 starts & 1 sub appearance (as well as 3 assists). Goals matter, even if a side like Swansea. He helped to provide a end product to their passing as well as complimenting it.

Yep, he was only there for a short while.....yet he still finished 3rd league top scorer for them. One goal and one assist in the league behind Scott Sinclair who started more than double the league games Sigurdsson started. Despite the results, he did make a positive direct impact on quite a few games, as his goalscoring form shows. Scoring a goal is game changing, usually. Yep, he didn't do the business against the big sides in terms of goalscoring but I watched that City game, he played a key part in the build up for that goal, with his hold up play. Was impressed with his maturity in that game. Yep, he didn't score against the big sides, although more leeway at a small club, instead of say at Liverpool, City, Manure, Chelsea, etc.

He is more of a goalscoring midfielder, rather than a assist maker. Bit like Lampard in that sense but he has a solid passing ability that made him a good fit for Swansea.

Some are reacting like a 'woman scorned' over Sigurdsson.

He is a talent. He isn't the next big thing but he is a talent. Liked the look of him ever since I watched a few games of his at Reading.

I just think the club has had to be more frugal with wages as we have a high wage bill and no CL football for yet another season, hence why the club didn't push the boat out for Sigurdsson and now we have Rodgers doing the PR spin on the situation. That is just my view on that of course.

  113. 5 reasons I'm glad I'm not a Spurs supporter right now:

    1) Modric on his way out, replacing him with.... Sigurdsson???
    2) Bale is leaving
    3) There is a wage structure that will not let them compete with other CL hopefuls, despite one of the highest ticket price structures in the premiership
    4) Just sacked the only manager who has been able to guide them to the top 4 consistently, and replaced him with a muppet who can't steer a 500M club to a home victory
    5) Losing the club's best striker last season because, again - wages

Yes - Liverpool wasted millions on transfers and crap players; we are all aware of this.  But IMO Liverpool's future is on the up with the appointment of an exciting young manager, solid financial backing, and hopes/plans of a bigger stadium in the long term.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Jay hes making a fair point mate,Bentley cost 15mil which turned out a bad buy but spurs record transfer fee is about 18 mil and the wage structure is very tight. Its hardley the same as 35mil on carroll and 22mil on Henderson.Wasnt aquilani about 20mil.The point here is that Spurs wont have offered him shed loads of cash.I hope he works out but like the article said half a season means nothing, look at carroll and can anybody remember Reyes for arse???

  126. Scott, aren't you concerned that the argumentative banter you once had with Man U has been relegated to the point of arguing with spurs fans? Do you not feel that your comments of optimism are just that as opposed to realistic possibilities? Spurs finished 17 points above you last season - isn't that a concern?

    ReplyDelete
  127. We were earning a lot more money than Spurs for an extended period of time, so you'd expect us to be able to spend more money too. But all I see is an obsession with the money perceived to be wasted on Carroll and Henderson (who was closer to £16m like Phil Jones or Anderson, not £22m like a James Milner).

Btw, Sigurdsson has been scoring goals and playing well for years now, not just during his cameo appearance with Swansea. As I keep saying, I've got no issue with the player, or with Spurs taking him on despite Liverpool's interest. And nobody said that the wages offered by Spurs were out of Liverpool's reach, just that they paid more than Liverpool were willing to pay for him, which is entirely different.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Hopes for a bigger stadium are conservative, going by Henry's comments in June. Though thanks to Henry's contacts in US, we picked up a juicy sponsorship deal with Warrior, so FSG did great on that. Reckon they will concentrate on the commercial revenue, instead of new stadium, for a good long while as we have neglected that side of things for far too long for a club of our popularity (and the potential of such popularity), going by what he said. Sat on our big backsides for the last two decades whilst Manure have exploited the pull of the PL to big effect to get big commercial revenue. Their revenue from 'new media' and 'mobile' ALONE is at least a third of what Arsenal make from ALL of their commercial revenue. The longer we go without CL money, the more important it is that our commercial income rises to help compensate the loss of CL money, especially with our high wage bill. In the short term, a new stadium can hold us back financially big time. We're heading in the right direction but we got a long way to go, in terms of fulfilling our commercial potential. The new stadium isn't the be all and end all for that.

Bale isn't leaving for at least another season after signing a new contract.

We have a high wage bill, up there with CL clubs, yet they have finished above us for the last few seasons and far closer to CL in those times. Its not always about how much but also about how effective that wage bill is on the pitch and we have shown our wage bill isn't value for money. The more we go without CL money, the harder it gets to sustain such wage levels.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Jay, everyone's entitled to their opinion so don't take things personally. What irks most spurs fans is the clear arrogance liverpool fans display when hey come out and state that this player clearly didn't sign for them due to money. That's completely disrespectful to spurs who have performed better that Liverpool in the pl for a number of years now.

Too many Liverpool fans need to snap out of this delusional thinking whereby you expect to still be one of the very top teams. It takes time and Liverpool were close to going under 2 years ago. Sadly for you guys, the mancs and London clubs have moved well ahead....

    ReplyDelete
  130. So because he wanted more money to join Liverpool, which is a bigger, richer and more demanding club then Swansea, he shouldn't ask for more money? So does that mean that Mr Rodgers is on the same money at Liverpool that he was on at Swansea. That must be the case as I'm sure Mr Rodgers would not want to be a classed as a hypocrite. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Dreamland......just sour grapes........you can just ask one question to ALL of your points......why did you try to sign him then?

  134. The real reason Gylfi, MAN U die hard fan, choose Spurs is because it gives him more chances to play for Man U later in his career.  At least it plays a big part.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Liverpool may have more history than sprus, but that is all you are living off. It doent matter what you have achieved in the past, what matters is the present. What have you acheived in the last few years, the crappy cup doesnt count, the FA cup has lost is soul too these days, and i know tottenham havent won anything either. BUT liverpool are on the decline, and spurs are on the up, we are a team that is showing our ambition, liverpool are not. The "sack our best manager in years" arguement doesnt hold any value with tottenham fans. if you inspect tottenhams last few seasons under redknapp, you will see that he was extremly limited, and inherited a very tallented squad that anyone could have turned around, he was sacked because of his lack of dedication to tottenham, constatntly talking to the media about the england job and loosing focus at a very important part of the season, resulting in us losing a 12 point lead over 4th, and ultimetly loosing out on CL football. HR, didnt and wouldnt plan for the future with his team selection or signings. The direction that Levy wants to take the team now is right, and AVB will prove all the doubters wrong. the only way harry would have signed Siggy, is if he had played for liverpool for 100 years, and he was on a free transfer. He will be a great signing, great potential, and liverpool are deluded if they think they are better off without him, you are not in a possition to sign anyone better, take a reality check and realise that you are a midtable team battling for a europa league spot.

  136. Hi mate i think the Carroll and henderson obsession is due to the fact they are massive overspends, the fact youve got more money due to your successes isnt really important. The sad fact is money has gone mad in football and Carroll hadnt done enough with Newcastle to warrant that kind of price tag.Dont get me wrong mate i hope he comes good for you(accept when you play spurs) And im aware Sigrdsson has played longer than Swansea,my point is that hes not proven in the Prem.

  138.
Yes there is a hint of optimism, but I don't think this is really contrary to realistic possibilities.

League position is not really a concern, because we are talking about two very different teams going into the new season from last season (for both Spurs and Liverpool), so I and many others would agree that past performance for both teams is not the strongest indicator of future results (over the course of medium term, not just next season).
Spurs just sacked a successful manager and replaced him with a manager that is a bit risky given his time at Chelsea (IMO), and Liverpool sacked an unsuccessful manager and replaced him with an exciting young manager (again, IMO).  Is there risk with BR? Of course - all I'm saying is from a Spurs point of view, I would be less optimistic as a supporter of a club who midway through last season looked to be as dangerous (if not more so) as the Manchester clubs, only to have the manager sacked and replaced with AVB.

  147. You are completely missin the age factor as well as the fact that he outperformed each and every current Liverpool player last season both in regard to assists/game and goals/game ratio.

When Gerrard was 22 he scored 1 goal in 25 games, Gylfi scored 7 in what 17 games ?  The year after Gerrard scored 7 in 54 games I will eat my hat if it takes Gylfi more than 25 games to score 7 next season.

    ReplyDelete
  148. thats still 10 whole million pounds less than you paid, thats a hell of a lots extra for one player

  149. abramovich would not have paid millions to get avb unless they knew he was class, just because it didnt work for avb at chelsea does not mean he is not class and levy will not take the risk either as things were looked into this thouroughly before a commitment therefore its a great signing secondly, spurs have won on average about 3 trophies in every decade although since 1991 spurs havent won much but still have picked up more trophies than anyone else below the so called top for (until recently ofcourse as spurs are part of the top four now), spurs has a great tradition was always more of a cup team that has always played brilliant football, yes liverpool are a bigger and more succesfull club but look at chelsea what did they have 20 years ago? yes you got it nothing, no trophies, no tradition and no fans, and what about man city? nothing aswell, these clubs needed sugar daddies whereas spurs acheived everything including recent success by using their finances within their means and are on the way up without a doubt and lastly, sigurdson stated that he chose spurs because they have a better squad and are more ambitious, therfore this is the truth and there is nothing you can do about it, forget bitter stories that are made up, the player himself confirmed this period. its the begining of a new era and spurs are gonna shine beleive it and accept it.

    ReplyDelete
  150. £25 million per season for jerseys not bad though.

Spurs need to worry about themselves. Harry's ridiculous fiasco with the England job cost Spurs what I had hoped might be an outside pop at league title.

His failure could lead to you losing Modric. There aren't many players of his ability around.

I woud argue that Spurs need CL even more than LFC

    ReplyDelete
  151. Come on dude. It isn't too much of a stretch to believe BR's comments, is it?

Liverpool trying to get him on same wages as he'd agreed with Swansea, Spurs gave hima better deal, Sigurdsson chooses the better deal.

What's wrong with that? Short career, every penny counts.

Spurs have a new manager who will also have a long settling in period. It just seems strange that he would Sigurdsson would abandon BR, given that they work so well together, not because it's Liverpool.

Don't like some of the stats used above. Shooting accuracy..... If I drill 9 out of 10 shots straight at the keeper, I won't score many but 90% shooting accuracy looks good on my CV. If a player, like Sigurdsson, scores classy efforts in the top corner etc, he is bound to let a few stray slightly do shooting accuracy goes down overall.

Sigurdsson has the potential to score as many as Lamps, that's why I'm a little disappointed but I understand that BR couldn't be held to ransom in his first deal. Not a good precedence to set

    ReplyDelete
  152. you lot going on about avb hasnt got much premier league experience, firstly its good what happened at chelsea as he can see his mistakes(if he had any) and secondly, how many years experince in the premier league did wenger have before he won the league? and what about mourinho? and what about mancini? grow up no chairman will take such a risk these guys know the score, they research, they have advisors etc etc, trust me abramovich and now levy are no mugs there is a reason avb was employed and it dosent matter that it didnt work at chelsea as there must be plenty of reasons why it whent wrong that we will never know, but be assured avb is no mug and nor is levy, these guys know what they are doing.please grow up, i respect liverpool as they are a massive club with tradition and history, but please respect spurs because they are also a big club with a respectful history within the top 6 of english football who probably invented the push and run fast flowing atractive football and haver a bigger fan base than most clubs in the league and that includes chelsea, villa everton and city. please let this thing go and please accept that sigurdson came to spurs because of footballing reason and nothing else. we can all see spurs are the better team at the moment please accept that.

  153. Can everyone stop rising to childish taunts?

At the end of the day, it's our stupidity as football fans that have allowed some players to earn more in a week than we do in years of toiling in monotonous jobs.

So let's ignore the taunts and discuss things in a mature fashion.

Jaimie, why are letting these people lower the tone here?

    ReplyDelete
  154. Very bitter article. He's on 55k a week so i have no idea what liverpool offered him to 'come to spurs for the money' there is one player, bale who is on big money. All the rest are around 40-65k with the star players on 65-80k (vdv, king etc). He came to spurs because right now spurs are better. Have a brighter future at present and play the way he plays. That's why. Liverpool are no longer the club they once were. Forrest have history and tradition but aren't what they once were. Not saying liverpool are that bad but they have that history but aren't one of the top sides now. And spurs are a big club, a traditional club with a huge history of players and success all be it more cup success its still success. One of the best run and also have the support of a big club. So yes they are a big club.

  162. I think with everything said in the comments so far, we should just look and see which players come in and leave the two clubs over this transfer window. Both sides have new managers with points to prove within the Premier league and I believe both teams will start well. The truth of the managers true ability will shake out over the season and we will see how good Sig actually is with a quality team around him.
I am pleased Liverpool did not buy him in the end, at 23 I am sure we can do better in the transfer market for the money so lets just get behind the manager and not waste any more energy with this point scoring between two good teams.

Any supporters that hate the gunners and detest the mancs are friends in my eyes so lets just give our new managers the support they need and let the games begin on the pitch...

  163. Bale will have one more season with Spurs. He's too good to stay with a club with no CL and not challenging for major trophies. Unless he's on Man City types wages, which won't happen at Spurs.

  164. Actually it was 24 mil, so 11 less than what Liverpool paid. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, Spurs were primarily the only other team bidding for him so why pay that much more? I think he was worth a maximum of 20 mil based on his marketing potential as a young English talent, so I would have been disappointed with a bid of 24 mil. Still, I believe Carroll can come good for LFC this coming season; Rodgers just needs to figure out how to include him in his fast-paced style of play.

  167. There are massive overspends all over the place though, but EVERYBODY is overly concerned with what Liverpool are perceived to have done wrong - Chelsea paid £25m for a defender who doesn't want to defend and £18m for a striker to sit in the reserves. Man U paid £18m for Phil Jones and Anderson, neither of whom appear to have any defined position they're likely to prosper in. Man City spent £24m for Milner to sit on the bench and similar amounts for Dzeko etc.

The sums are ridiculous in each case, but all I hear about is Henderson and Carroll as evidence of transfer mistakes. It's understandable that Liverpool fans complain about the lack of judgement in our own transfers, but I just don't understand why everybody else is overly concerned with our perceived failures.

Irt Spurs, they may not have spent as big on individuals, but they were spending big on a bunch of proven quality players to just sit on the bench. That is/was a concern for you guys though, and irrelevant to what is going on at LFC (although I felt it should've led to a more concerted push for success, instead of just a top 4 place)

  170. No offense to lfc fans but I think this article is yet another attempt to put lipstick on a pig, something that Liverpool bloggers have done a lot of this past season.

Sigurdsson was Rodgers' meal ticket. It was widely expected that he would be able to bring Sigurdson with him to Anfield. The fact that he has snubbed Liverpool for Spurs is very worrying, and raises big questions as to what calibre of players Rodgers will be able to attract this summer. The fact that Rodgers has recently said "Gerrard and Carragher will play a massive role this season" speaks volumes.

Rodgers could still prove all the doubters wrong this season, but given his lack of stature, if he loses a few games early on he could be the first manager out the door this season.

  171. Meal ticket? Give over. Rodgers knows the player; he knows how much he's worth, and in the end, he didn't think it was worth spending big bucks. That's it.

And first out the door? You're having a laugh. Rodgers will be at LFC for years, mark my words.

  176. Strange - your comment was approved about 30 seconds after you first posted it, but for some reason it didn't go live. Sorry about that. It was only held in moderation due to the word filter. I wish I could turn it off but it's a necessary evil. Without it, the comments section would be flooded with trolls and all the other members of my fan club (!)

  180. How many more digs about Downing can this article fit in?? I've said it a thousand times, you put a good striker in a good team with Downing and he will get you 10+ assists a season. Last season only 6 players in the ENTIRE LEAGUE created more chances than Downing.  How is it some people cannot see the wood for the trees?

  183. Like i said "Some people cant see the wood for the trees"  If that is the only thing that matters then Jordan Henderson was better than the £40m rated Luca Modric in the 2010-11 season
