As I've argued repeatedly over the last year, Andy Carroll is a major barrier to Liverpool FC's forward progress. With a passing accuracy figure of 57% last season (!), the 35m man does not have the technique, football intelligence, composure, balance, or passing ability to fit into a team set-up to play fast-moving possession football. I dread the thought of having to watch Carroll's lumbering, technically inept brand of football slowing Liverpool down over the next 3+ years, which is why I'm overjoyed to see AC Milan expressing an interest in signing him.
In an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport yesterday, Pier Silvio Berlusconi - the son of AC Milan Owner Silvio Berlusconi - uttered the following magical words:
"As a future target I’d like Andy Carroll. I must admit that for his body build, and after seeing his header in the Euros, I would like to have Carroll at Milan."
This is great to hear, and if Berlusconi has any influence with his dad, it represents an amazing opportunity for Liverpool offload Carroll. I sincerely hope that John Henry was on the phone to Milan five minutes after Berlusconi made these comments.
I know my views on Carroll sound harsh, but it's important to take an overview, and look at the bigger picture. It's nothing personal; objectively, Carroll has certain strengths as a player, but he is just not suited to Liverpool's style of play, and we've seen ample evidence of that over the last 18 months.
The key question here is this: Is it in LFC's best footballing interests to keep Carroll as the spearhead of the attack for the next 3+ years?
In my view, the answer is unequivocally NO. There are plenty of other strikers out there who are a better fit for Liverpool. Additionally, it's not as if the club will miss Carroll; 6 goals in 42 league games since January 2011 is compelling proof of that.
Yes, Carroll's form improved near the end of last season (not hard since he'd been so atrocious for most of the season), but it's irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. No matter how good Carroll plays, he's still not a good fit for Liverpool, and that's the reality I hope Rodgers and FSG can see.
Can you imagine Spain playing with Carroll up front? Given their style of football, he would be totally out of place, and he would undoubtedly disrupt the entire flow of the team with his poor technique, misplaced passes, misdirected headers, and egregious lack of balance.
The same applies to Liverpool. The club needs to be prioritised over the individual, and if Carroll remains at Anfield, forward progress will continue to be stymied.
The only way Carroll can be successful at Liverpool is if the entire team is set-up to serve him. That means making him the focal point of the attack, and having a predictable approach of peppering the box with crosses and long balls.
In other words, the 'Emile Heskey approach'. Seriously, is this what we want to see at Anfield? That outdated style of football is a depressing historical anachronism, and belongs in the dark ages.
Liverpool do not have the time to hope and pray that Carroll will 'come good' at some stage. He's 23 - if he hasn't learned the basics of ball control, balance, positioning, passing and technique by now, then he's never going to get it.
The point, however, is that no matter how good Carroll becomes, he is ostensibly a one dimensional target man; a player who needs constant service to produce (and even with good service, end product is not foregone conclusion); a player who creates precious little for himself, and that's just not what Liverpool need.
Carroll is in the same boat as other players from the club's recent history. It wouldn't matter how long the club kept the likes of Voronin, Dossena, Morientes, Pennant etc, they'd never be right for the club, which is why they were allowed to leave.
Sometimes, you have to be cruel to be kind. It's not Carroll's fault Kenny Dalglish wasted 35m on him, but the club must always come first, even if it means dumping a player after only 18 months. Liverpool will inevitably make a loss on him, but that's always going to be the case. The club just needs to take it on the chin, and sell now whilst his stock is high.
Rightly or wrongly, Rafa Benitez got rid of Robbie Keane after only 6 months, and the same kind of ruthlessness is required now.

i want at least £30m or zlatan ibrahimovic for him
ReplyDeleteRafa made about 80% of Keane's transfer back when he sold him and most of that went to help Hicks & Gillet pay off debt. (It was the first time Rafa had to earn significantly more revenue in the transfer window than spend.) Anyway, we won't make even close to that back by transferring Carrol. LFC may have decided to see how they can improve him and sell him on for more money later on, it it's the way forward. Get used to it, Carrol isn't going anywhere this season.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't say he wanted to buy him, and seeing as he is only the son of the owner and just voicing his opinion that he likes Carroll's physicality.
ReplyDeleteHe has no input into the clubs transfer policy, but the stupid press and web sites take it all out of context. Nobody in their right mind would give us more than £7mil for Carroll so selling is not an option. And seeing as nobody has even asked about him it ain't going to happen
Dude, we are talking about the same cheapskate AC Milan who didn't play Aqua in most games because they didn't want to activate the auto buy clause in his contract and then turned around and tried to buy him at a much cheaper price? They will probably offer Liverpool 5 mill or something like that.
ReplyDeleteBe realistic bro. They will no way in hell pay anything close to what is needed to get rid of Carroll.
Please post the sentence from my article where I stated that Milan want to buy Carroll.
ReplyDeleteI didn't - I said PSB's comments represent a good opportunity to offload Carroll. PSB is the son of the owner of the club, so I'm pretty sure he has his ear.
5 million is enough
ReplyDeleteI was waiting for you to spread this rubbish, do you ever research what total garbage you constantly post.
ReplyDeleteIf you did you would find out that all this started when berlusconi's son said likes carroll,
so what ! if John W Henry's children said they like messi does that mean Liverpool are after him and you'll soon be writing a story about it. - I wouldnt be surprised at all - IDIOT
**yawn** carroll is getting good with his touches an can score with his feet. He will be at liverpool next season. End of story :)
ReplyDeleteExactly.
ReplyDeletestill slaggin' everybody off i see, jamie - the only positive thing about you is your extreme negativity - give the guy a break !
ReplyDeletecome on!!|
ReplyDelete@Ertre5rt carroll is coming good..give him a chance!
he really is a good impact player
No take £20m and put in a buy back (first refusal) & sell on clause. You never know he may grow in the Italian league into a monster player. LFC simply dont have time to accomodate his transition from a 1 in 4 games to a 1 in 2 goal scorer.
ReplyDeleteConsidering we wont be able to get decent money for him, our best bet (economically) is to keep him and guide him to better form. Target men peak later in their careers most of the time and Andy is well ahead of the curve.
ReplyDeleteIf AC came in with £20mil and we had someone excellent lined up, then it may be worth taking it but that isn't likely.
No point in dumping him if we're not going to benefit substantially.
keep him for game where we need to change the style of footy for the last twenty minutes.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. If he gets the service he'll score, you only have to look at the recent Sweden game to see that.
ReplyDeleteyou never know he may come good.
ReplyDeleteExactly. That's it in a nutshell. Plus, all these people saying he'll 'come good' are missing the point. Carroll will come good for HIM, not for LFC. Carroll at his best is still not a good fit for LFC because if he's at his best, it means the team is not playing the way LFC should be playing; it means the team is geared towards endless cross, long balls and punts into the box, all of which lead to possession being easily lost.
ReplyDeletesigurdsson signs for tottenham. we will find it difficult to sign anyone for some time.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, even if we sold Carroll and didn't have a replacement, I don't think it would make any difference. With only 11 goals in the last 18 months, it's not as if he's contributed much. One of the reserve strikers would probably score that many goals in one season as a replacement for Carroll.
ReplyDeletecould this be an oppertunity to swap carroll for pato
ReplyDeleteI think, everybody is teasing & itching LFC, for the stupendous idiocy of the highest order by KD in transfer market. It 'll be hell of a task for us to off load those over paid & over priced British garbage. Among most expensive 4 KD purchase (Suarez was not KD's buy; he won't have bought any Uruguayan, instead of a Brit), only Henderson has some merit, for his age, rest are ..........
ReplyDeleteI don't think Milan 'll buy AC, Seria A much more technical than EPL, & for 5-7mn, anyone can get a more skillful player than AC in Latin America or Iberian peninsula, playing in 2nd division. Also, where are they going to fit; on top of the quality JK mentioned (lumber, technically poor, no skill on ball, poor first touch, slow & heavy in turn, no passing vision, wayward header etc.), AC is a poor, poor defender, so, they can't use him as sweeper.
I think, we are stuck with the 3 English AC, Downing & Cole; worthless players with high price tag & unworthy salary. Nobody is going to pay near about the stupid money we paid for transfer or wage, & these players are not going to leave the best deal of their life (even at 26, being a free agent, 3 years after, AC 'll not get half the salary than his current; because he 'll finish in Championship).
I think FSG 'll be wiser to buy out the contract of the garbage 3 under mutual consent; otherwise we 'll have to loan out these utter rubbish players & yet 'll have to pay good percentage of salary.
You have got to be the only tit on the planet that believes this press made up rubbish.
ReplyDeleteThe man said he liked him - the press said he wants to buy him.
Poor effort, and sloppy journalism!
There might be some credence to this comment emanating from Milan, and then there might not. What is indisputable is that AC Milan are totally untrustworthy when it comes to ' agreements ' over buying players. They are about as honest as the directors of certain UK banking institutions !
ReplyDeleteJamie, How is Carrol's stakes high now? We will never recoup the money spent on him. We are stuck for now. He will stay. How much will you rate him now? What do you mean Carroll's stakes are high now? I am baffled.
ReplyDeleteZlatan?ddnt u see how he floped at Barca?and we are abwt to play the passing game.he will not make it!AC want Carroll because he is the Ibrahimovic type of player(tall' strong, paceless, contrls earial balls well,e.t.c).we want a pacey striker who can score many goals given a few chances he gets, not not few goals after a series of criticism
ReplyDeleteWe spend too much to let him go for nothing. Might as well use him as designated header specialist. 90th minute corner kind-of-thing
ReplyDeleteSell, sell, sell, sell
ReplyDeletemy friend, dd you read the article?i think you just want to criticize the writer.well if you have any personal issues with him, pliz take it somewhere else because LFC sites are not for solving your personal grudges
ReplyDeletewhich also means "he may not" try looking at both ends will you
ReplyDeleteJamie k, i like your replies to some funny comments I'm seeing here.people are failing to note where you pointed that he doesn't fit in Liverpool's style of play.
ReplyDeleteYour title says "Why LFC must grab this amazing transfer opportunity ASAP"
ReplyDeleteThis suggests an offer exists..... How can LFC grab an opportunity that doesn't exist?
Total horseshit. Who here really thinks Milan would blow large some of money on Carroll?
ReplyDeleteDream on
Crikey, you don't half talk nonsense. "he'll come good for him?" You're a wasted talent Jamie, why not go into management yourself? You appear to have vision beyond any others capability.
ReplyDeleteonly for silva or pato in return lol. you can't be serious milan don't have those kind of funds even if liverpool were prepared to sell him for 15 million or less. as for a pato swap be careful what you wish for his injury history is worse than torres van persie and essien combined.
ReplyDeleteI think he mentions the media and and websites in general as its all over the web.
ReplyDeleteThe title of the article would lead people to believe that a transfer is possible although no one at the AC has said they want to buy him.
The fact that he was injured during those 18months?
ReplyDeleteDelete now Jamie delete now!!!
Bet your not even from Liverpool fuck off he's a good player
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely spot on. AC Milan, just like Juventus the season before, 'pulled a fast one' over the Aquilani loan by deliberately playing him a couple of games fewer than the total needed to trigger his transfer. AC Milan got a good player on the cheap. How much of his salary were LFC paying?
ReplyDeleteWith regard to the club's playing style, or projected playing style, we are all making the assumption that it will be similar to Swansea last season. LFC is not Barcelona and, if a team 'parks the bus' as Chelsea did in CL, then what will be our Plan B?
'getting good'
ReplyDeleteis he child learning to read or a professional footballer?
i'd sell him,he's worth taking a big loss on.
While I wouldn't deny the chance to offload Carroll to any club, it would have to be for at least 20m. However, I don't think that Carroll would be a bad option from the bench. Like Barca and most recently Spain, they were in need for a plan B, they needed a target man like Carroll to just change things around. Carroll wouldn't be a bad impact sub IMO. Also, the partnership of Carroll and Suarez looked very promising towards the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteCarroll is nothing like Ibra technically, nowhere near. Tall, strong and good receiver of long passes, not much beyond that when it comes to similarities. Even though he doesn't always make the best use out of it (which was the case at Barca me thinks), Ibra is technically pretty good.
ReplyDeleteRightly. Rafa got rid of Keane rightly.
ReplyDeleteNo. When he came he was injured last season he was in and out of team so he lost his confidence but that came back Near to the end of the season some times it takes time for people to inbed into a team (eg bale when he joined spurs) but next season he will come back off a positive end of season run and euros. Give the lad a chance.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think that Carroll doesn't fit the type of play Rodgers want to implement. It's no coincidence that Llorente, a far superior player with the similar build, didn't see a single minute of playing time during the Euros for Spain (the role model for all tiki taka). We need shorter, more technical players with great pace. Zlatan is maybe the best footballer coming out of Scandinavia since Michael Laudrup but he couldn't cut it at Barca because he is not that type of tiki taka-player because of his height. Same with Carroll. But it is also obvious any tiki taka-based game needs a plan B in form a large target player hence the need for Carroll on the bench. My two cents worth.
ReplyDeleteI agree that he's coming good and I believe he'll continue in a good manner. The question is whether Rodgers can make use of him. If the playing style is going to be highly technical and focussed on low short passing, it might still be best to sell Carroll. I personally hope that Rodgers has a vision that involves him, but if not, there's no use in hanging on.
ReplyDeleteHow long was carroll injured/fully fit in those last 18months? where you at blackburn away or the fa cup semi and final? englands form striker going into the euros and scored a beast of a goal aged 22 and you want us to loose what 20million on him even though he has potetial to improve his wages are low in comparison and contributes towards the home grown policy. we need a striker in the mode of a hernandez/defoe a finisher who accepts rotation with ac and suarez (who you also want us to sell....) #unreal
ReplyDeletei imagine one of rodgers main remits from FSG is 'get the most out of what we've got'. You can see by our new wage sturcture that we are more akin to the arsenal now, hence missing out on sigurdsson and lacina traore already.
ReplyDeleteeven if carroll doesn't suit the style of play, somehow he need's to be made into an asset. at the moment he's probably worth about 12m to a mid table side like villa (i dont buy into the milan waffle at all).
that means that rodgers needs to buy someone who is good enough to play every week and keep carroll on the bench, thus making carroll try even harder. he has responded to the challenge of late, so the omens are not all bad. either way, either, somehow he fits in at LFC or his value is increased so he can be exchanged.
the fact that rodgers was a known , keen admirer of lacina traore indicates that he's not adverse to big forwards. lest we not forget graham from swansea, who is half the player of carroll and played regularly for them under BR.
On another note, it came out today that BR tried to take sterling on loan last jan, which is a good sign.
my feelings re that BR will bring in some non household names/bargains and look to the youth set up PLUS work on improving what we've got.there will be no fantasy signings.if rafa was the manager, we may be playing a more defensive game but we'd be bringing in javi martinez and munian. ah well, can't have it all.
Great points. Totally agree.
ReplyDeletehe scored one goal and started on game in the euros,is that somehow a massive confidence booster?
ReplyDeletei just don't believe in this blind faith.he was injured for awhile,so what? that's part of being a footballer,if he doesn't have the mental capacity to get over that then he isn't worth having.he's been at lfc 18 months and has had probaly 5 good performances.
i'd like to be proved wrong but i agree with jamie that lfc need to be ruthless and sell him.
milan turned down a 40mil psg bid from psg.
ReplyDeletethey'd hardly swap him for carroll.
how did spain manage without that 'plan b'?
ReplyDeletethey managed just fine without having to resort to lumping it up to a big man.
jaymieeee top yourself plz you moaning c-nt and all you other pric-s i support my team wotever and whoever fookn wooly bastar-s moan moan fkn moan i bet uve never been 2 anfield you cnts we dont want ur support ha support my arse moan moan fkn moan i bet u all gave lucas loads you fkn rats ps top yourselves plz
ReplyDeleteWhen you are finished giving out, have you actually got an opinion on the topic?????????????????????????
ReplyDeleteJaimie Kanwar, U are a cock
ReplyDeleteYeh getting goals gives u more confidence. An yeh if your not fully fit then you can't perform to your fullest FACT. An sell him? Nah give him another season
ReplyDeleteLeave carroll alone let him have a season or 2 to proove himself of his ability.. Its not easy when fans like u and other things like media get on ur back.. Give him time
ReplyDeleteA season or two to prove himself? So you're basically saying your're willing to watch LFC slip further behind the pack just so Carroll can try and prove himself? That's putting the individual before the club.
ReplyDeletePlease, if not for AC's nationality, he's worth the most 3-5 mil pounds. I will gladly sell him for that to Milan and not asking for anyone in return. As long he's still in LFC, we will not be able to move up the league table regardless of whatever style of football we play. As the main striker in the team with a price tag of 35 mil pounds and scored 4 league goals in 35 matches, he is the worst flop for LFC for the longest time to be.
ReplyDeleteIf Milan really wants to buy AC, it would be the another great step forward for LFC after the sacking of KD. They can actually put AC on sale for about 5 mil pounds and approach Milan directly. This should be the fastest route in offloading this huge liability of LFC. Do it and do it quick. This is going to be the opportunity of a life time for LFC to progress after KD's reign as manager.
ReplyDeleteI've already accepted the fact that all these KD's signings are worth 20-30% of the whatever fees they were bought for. If FSG are thinking the same, then it will be the best for them to offload all these players on a cheap. There's no point hanging on to these players, an attacking midfielder with 0 goal 0 assist and a main striker with 4 league goals the entire season. Even at 20-30% of their transfer fee to LFC, it will be a huge gamble for any club that takes them on.
ReplyDeleteThe transfer fee of AC is like spilled milk. We will never ever be able to recover that silly amount of money we paid for him. It will be a blessing for LFC if we can get able 20-30% of that amount. This is a failed investment, so we need to get rid of this liability and move forward, not point thinking about how much we paid for him then. Just move on and I'm sure BR will bring us back to where we should be.
ReplyDeleteYup,and we pay him wages while he takes his time? That's a lot of money calculated on one season. Time is not on our side.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure Carroll fits into Brendan's system of play. Carroll's type of player is for teams that uses him as a target man. But in Brendan's possession and penetration football philosophy, he looks like the odd one out. So, it might not be a bad idea to offload him.
ReplyDeleteI am afraid we are stuck with AC. So we have got to wait & see what BR`s
ReplyDeleteanswer is, its looking more likely each day that we are going to start
the new season with more or less the same squad, with the addition
of Aqualani,Cole, & Lucas.Sterling will be given a chance, & maybe Suso.
As long as Carra , Adam & Spearing play no part in his plans,i will be quite
happy, maybe a bit happier if he signs a very quick striker.
There can only have been an expectation on the part of KD that Carroll would grow into a much much better player than we have seen. It's hard to say what he based that on, only Kenny would actually know. What we'd probably all like to know is what kind of analysis of Carroll did the club put together to justify the 35 million pounds and where did they see the potential? I'm genuinely curious because I find it hard to believe that a football club like Liverpool with such an experienced manager in charge would have made that purchase without having a very very good idea of what they were getting. It's fine with me if the idea was that he had potential to improve, that's the kind of mistake that managers make all the time and it's not something they do on purpose. But what was it that he saw in Carroll? What did he think he could do with him?
ReplyDeleteI'm indifferent over selling the player or keeping him. We'd never get a top offer at this stage, at most something in the region of 10 million. If there is a place for him in the team in terms of how Rodgers wants to play then maybe he can contribute. If he doesn't fit then we'll know soon enough because he just won't end up on the pitch. Makes me think the most likely scenario is to loan him out to someone who'll use him to best advantage, hope he has a big year and scores plenty of goals and then cash in when his profile is a bit better.
Alternatively Andy will surprise everyone and work himself ragged doing whatever is required by Rodgers to be effective and earn himself a starting spot in a winning team. That will depend entirely on him and the manager. Maybe it's possible, or maybe it will never work. He'll be given at least the pre-season and some Euro games to show what he's got. I think Rodgers will work out pretty quickly if that's worth keeping or not.
I think Andy Carroll has a bright future at LFC. He has a lot of learning to do and he has the drive and ambition to achieve great things. Every team needs options and he is a great option to have, against certain teams he will show his strengths, it's up to Rodgers to work out when best to play him. The club paid silly money for him but the famous quote from that time was whatever Andy Carroll costs add £15 million to it and tell Chelsea that's what we want for Torres. If Newcastle wanted £15 million for Andy and we quoted Chelsea £30 million for Torres we would still end up with the same balance sheet, so the transfer fee to me is irrelevant. As an avid supporter I find it disgraceful that fans and fan websites are slating our players before the season has even began. Every player has a clean slate and every player is playing for the shirt, if Andy or any other player fails to do what is required I am quite sure Mr Rodgers knows what to do. I doubt he will be on here looking for advice somehow!
ReplyDeletei would sell him for anything more than 25M...anything less would be a major loss...
ReplyDeleteSo Carroll is a good forward because he had three good games in the last few weeks of the season. He scored with his head at Wembley and he scored with his head at the Euros. I will give you this, it is an attribute, but it is certainly not an attribute that a coach who names Vicente Del Bosque as one of his mentors will be looking to use. Carroll will either be sold or used as a plan B. He will never be a first choice striker under Rodgers. End of story :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think we should sell Andy for anything less than 15 M but no1 will be willing to pay more than that amount for him, so better keep him i'm sure he will get better this season and if at all we buy a Striker why not Oscar Cardozo.
ReplyDeleteWhat is this service you speak of? Your talking about long balls and crosses am I right? Do you know who our manager is? How many headed goals did Swansea score last year? Not many. How many passes did they make? I believe it was the 4th most in Europe. Yes Europe.
ReplyDeleteIf you think that all Carroll needs is service than you haven't come to terms with the style of play we'll be seeing at Liverpool next year. He will not be part of Rodger's plans.
Isn't our best bet economically to perform very well in the league, secure Champions League football and enjoy the cash injection that that brings. That is FSG's business plan. Kenny Dalglish couldn't see that and thought not qualifying was irrelevant because he reached two finals. That is a good achievement but the owners want Champions League football year after year, especially with no stadium plans.
ReplyDeleteWe will not win anything with Andy Carroll as our number nine because he is not capable of playing in a tiki-taka system. He will be at best an impact player off the bench.
If anything, playing him will harm the progress of getting the rest of the team to play attractive short passing football.
wait a minute ibra didnt flop at barca he scored 20 goals for barca under there style and it was his relationship with guardiola was the reason he left after 1 season
ReplyDeleteand make a £30.5m lost
ReplyDeletewere lucky your not liverpool manager
im not saying get rid of carroll im saying if were going to get rid of carroll thats what we have accept min
ReplyDeleteanyway i like carroll
go long with carroll or miss glorious chances like how alexis hit the post or busquets miss an open goal
ReplyDeleteif liverpool finish 3rd this season or higher they should try and get rvp for free as he wont be signing a new contract which runs out in 2013
ReplyDeletealso we should sign tello when i saw his ucl debut i was very impressed 2 goals from the bench
ReplyDeletebettr to sll hm and get a speedy fwd to make a great combntn wit gerrard
ReplyDeleteMy opinion i would like to keep AC for 1 more season...Well at moment we were very diff to attract Best FWD....Let said if the TIKI TAKA tactic we assume BR will bring into LFC this season DONT WORK this season (due to player we had at moment)...least we had AC to play long ball tactic (alternate option)...well may lot fans not agree but try think mgr POV is wanna keep all possible n option for gameplay...
ReplyDeleteMy POV : AC not clicked last season may b due to KD not really well use of him (or TOTALLY DUNNO HOW TO USE HIM)...least fair we judge him on this season under BR....does any1 think y he bcome failure out of sudden from NEWc to LFC??? player dont lose ability in 1 night...tactical n confident is major key point....
AC = ANDY CARROLL....not AC MILAN
Excuse me? Spain struggled badly against Portugal and had ONE shot on target in 90 minutes. It was a similar story against Croatia who missed an absolute sitter before Alonso, of all people, scored with a header. The first goal in the final was, believe it or not, also a header, by the smallest man on the pitch. The ability to head a ball has suddenly become a heinous crime. Heading a ball with power, direction and timing is just as much of a skill as the ability to pass a ball 5 yards sideways and backwards.
ReplyDeleteIf you cannot pass the ball through a team which 'parks the bus' then going down the outside with pace/trickery, or passing the ball over the back line, are Options! Pirlo was one of the best players in the Euros. Why? Apart from his obvious general skills he demonstrated the ability to lift the ball over the defensive back line to feet or into space. They were not conventional 'long balls' which invariably run through to the keeper, but dipped quickly rather like modern free kicks.
so you can read rodgers mind can you, maybe you should become his assistant. The facts surrounding AC are clear
ReplyDelete1) The value of him is immaterial Chelsea bought him we received AC + 15million in return for torres whose true value at the time was probably 25m therefore the true cost to the club for Carroll was 10m which is probably about right. If Newcastle had said we want 45m for him we would have received 60m for Torres. The numbers in the books dont matter.
2) When he joined he was injured it took him 8 months ish to get back to a level were he could play 90 mins.
3) Dalglish never gave him a run in the side. All Strikers thrive on confidence the longer they go without scoring the less confident they become.
4) I have watched Andy Carroll play and thought he wouldnt get in my local pubs sunday morning team. Then I have watched him play and frighten the opposition to death including games v Man utd and Chelsea.
5) Is he worh 35m ..... absolutely not but if you consider the facts surrounding the transfer and accept that the actual cost to the club was 10m I think he is worth keeping. Most football experts including the current England Manager think he will do okay.I will go with that for the moment. Lets give him at least another 12 months. I would hate to sell him now and see him become a fantastic player for another club.
his injury was a serious one...... one that could of and has ended careers eg. jamie redknapp, robbie fowler ok it took a couple of these injuries to do basically but both redknapp and fowler were never the sameplayers after the first one...... ppl dont realise how long it takes to get fully fit after that kind of injury then the fact that KK played him here and there he was never getting match fit carroll was probably our best player in the last 2 months of the season give the lad a chance he is going to be in business this season...... everyone forgetting what he did to terry, theres going to be alot more of that just wait and see.....
ReplyDeleteIf he was manager:
ReplyDeleteCarroll would never have been bought to the club,
and we would have £36m more to spend on players that acctually fit our style of play!
Great chance to get some of the money back. If is true though.
ReplyDeleteHe's already had a season and a half, a full season more than Robbie Keane got, how much more does he need?
ReplyDeletei would rather give the lad a chance see what he does with his chance if not then sell him next summer just think he has to have the chance to prove so many wrong..... i think/hope he comes good but if he dont then im with on it...... just think its better to take the risk than losing 25-30mill by selling him now
ReplyDeleteBack Carroll and expect good things from him

I thought that heading the ball into the net was Plan B. Sorry, I am being silly now. You make a fair comment, but my main concern is that people will think that 'the Spanish way' is the only way to play football when palpably it is not. Is it down to the Spanish 'system' or simply that Spain has produced a generation of outstanding players, notable amongst them being Iniesta and Xavi. These two have played hundreds of games together with Barcelona and dozens with Spain. They have been the 'engine room' for the national side through 2008, 2010 and 2012. Significant? I think so and I wonder what will happen when they move on.
ReplyDeleteThe same line of argument used to defend KD...TBH Carroll is probably worth 7 to 8 mil only..
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer keep him as a "Plan B". However I realize keeping a £35m player on the bench is crazy. So I suppose I'd take £20m for him and sign someone else.
ReplyDeleteOpen your eyes my friend Ibrahimovic wasnt a flop at Barca he scored 16 goals in 29 games for them. Like many others would have done he got pi##ed off with the favouratism from Pep towards his love child Messi
ReplyDeleteJamie Kanwar, i really doubt your football knowledge. Every comment you make is there to be antagonistic.
ReplyDeletewhen xavi retires they have fabregas and thiago alcantra but spain are a one off.systems only work if you have players good enough for it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I bet you were one of the ones who wanted to get rid of Crouch when he went on his goalscoring drought, only to come back with avengeance, true LFC fans back all the players that put on the red jersey. That is why Liverpool fans are better than any other fans
ReplyDeleteRubbish! We have always found good signings and we always will. We have made some real juicy errors: Carroll for one, but we have often found just the right talent for the job when we needed to. And who says it has to be a big name? The way of doing things was often to go to a lower division team and find a promising young talent and turn them into a great player. We are too inpatient these days and want everything all at once: Rush did not become a great striker over night and I could name several others, but I cannot be bothered. We have plenty of young talent of our own. What is wrong with Stirling?
