Serie A Champions Juventus continue to be linked with a summer move for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, and now, ex-Juve and Uruguay star Daniel Fonseca has fanned the flames of speculation by urging his former club to drop plans to sign Edinson Cavani and go for Suarez instead.
Speaking to Tuttosport last night, Fonseca - who won two league titles with Juventus in the mid-1990s - argued that the Italian club would be making a great choice by signing either of the two players, but added:
"Of the two, I'd prefer to see Luis Suarez go to Juventus. Suarez is more powerful and deadly [than Cavani]. Both have been proving themselves as lethal finishers in the area.
"Suarez would fit easily into the Juve system: he is a mobile forward with great goalscoring instincts. Juve should make a great effort to sign him. Uruguayans are always a success in Italy and the pressure of playing for a big team is not a burden."
With a conversion rate of 10% for Liverpool, I'm not sure Suarez could accurately be described as a 'lethal finisher' (!), but that description is definitely accurate when it comes to Suarez's form for Uruguay.
Juventus is probably an attractive proposition for Suarez, but a move seems unlikely, especially in light of Brendan Rodgers recent comments on the subject:
"I've had a brilliant chat with Luis. He's really looking forward to being here and we are obviously hoping that we can get him on to another new contract. He's really looking forward to the new season."
Actions speak louder than words, however, and you never know what might happen over the next two months. Is Suarez 'more power and deadly' than €30m-rated Cavani?
* Last season: Suarez = 17 goals/8 assists/1 league goal every 232 mins.
* Last season: Cavani - 33 goals/5 assists/1 league goal every 126 mins.

When you see them both on the same pitch suarez upstages him 9 times out of 10
ReplyDeleteAm not sure about Cavani would be as lethal in EPL. Suarez always a better player when they play together.
ReplyDeleteOnly reason Suarez hasn't been as effective for Liverpool as he has been for Uruguay is the difference in quality between the two attacks. At Uruguay his main job is to score goals but at Liverpool he also had to create those goals on his own along with finishing.
ReplyDeleteSuarez is destined to be LFC legend. If he leaves? We will never know.
ReplyDeleteI'd have Cavani over Suarez tbh, what with all the cringeworthy antics last season...., if Kenny lost his job over the Evra racist incident handling ertc.... then Suarez should be offloaded also, wouldn't surprise me if Suarez does the off anyway, Marcotti seems to think that its far from a done deal that he will be staying at LFC...
ReplyDeleteCavani would be a good replacement.
i am a manc though i would have suarez over cavani simply because his style of play and nut megs are exceptional his always doing something
ReplyDeleteNow only we could off load you.
ReplyDeleteGive Suarez more service and then he won't have to concentrate on providing for himself as well!
ReplyDelete£50 millions + if they are serious
ReplyDeleteunfortunately you can't. He will never go to Manure. Never.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of finishing, Cavani is more deadly in front of goal, in my view, and he isn't just a goalpoacher either. He tends to do more of the workhorse stuff for Uruguay than Suarez and Forlan, as he has played plenty for them in a narrow right midfield role and Suarez plays forward and Forlan in the hole. In terms of being the main striker, I'd take Cavani over Suarez as I prefer the dynamic he offers in the main striker role. Somewhat Batistuta-eque, in terms of style. Suarez behind Cavani at Liverpool would have been interesting but I don't think that will ever happen.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Kenny got the best out of anyone of his players. Suarez is definitely good for 25+ next season!
ReplyDeletethey got rushie on the cheap . owen mcmanerman we got no poke 4 them. he is under a decent lenght contract no less than 40 million . we got decent poke 4 alonso and maseronio . we must play hardball and they wont him they pay the goin rate.dont want to see him go but bussiness is bussiness. itailian football is skint so it wont happen.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you
ReplyDeletewho is the better player Suarez who is the better finisher Cavani.
ReplyDeletenow i don't like what this new manager said about pulling for engish players, i hope luis and coates leave lp.
ReplyDeletepress liked then!
ReplyDeleteJaimie, you must be praying for this to come true...
ReplyDeleteIf u honestly think Kenny lost his job over the Suarez issues then you are kidding yourself mate. Maybe wasting a shit load of money on players worth less than half of the original transfer fee. Maybe our worst league finish in years along with shocking home form. Also playing players no where neer good enough to start in order to justify his recruits. His press conference's didn't help either. He played the price for more than just one issue. He will always be a legend and a champion. But the show must go on.
ReplyDeleteLosing Suarez would be a catastrophe for Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteAt this stage he is our only World Class player, available week in, week out.
Juventus couldn't afford him anyway. It would be €40 million minimum. Gadaffi family not ruling Linya anymore, therefore no money in Juve
