What a tragedy! Carra confirms LFC almost signed £30m 48-goal striker...

After missing out on England's first Euro 2012 game, Andy Carroll continued his improved Liverpool form on Friday with a crucial goal against Sweden. Reds fans will be hoping that the £35m man continues to improve his game, but if things had gone differently in January 2011, a different striker would be lining up for Liverpool next season.

In his column for The Telegraph, Jamie Carragher revealed that Carroll was not the club's first choice to replace Fernando Torres. He said:

"Gómez and Carroll may have had contrasting fortunes in domestic football over the last few seasons, but their similarities can be underlined by the fact Liverpool almost signed the Bayern Munich striker before we moved for Carroll.

"The move for Gómez fell through at the last minute - when Hodgson was Liverpool manager - and since then Gómez has not stopped scoring".

What a tragedy it was to miss out on such a great striker. Goal stats for Carroll/Gomez since January 31 2011:

* Carroll: 56 games - 11 goals
* Gomez: 65 games - 55 goals

Gomez grabbed 48 goals in total last season (including 7 for Germany), but domestically, he hit 29 goals more than Carroll. Just imagine how those extra goals could've transformed Liverpool's season.

On second thoughts, don't imagine that; it's too depressing...

  1. Wow! 100% of people that participated in the poll voted for Gomez!

  2. This is hardly a revelation. The deal was very highly publicised in the press and on numerous websites at the time - even on Sky. There was talk of a loan, and then talk of a permanent deal.

  3. WHY COULDNT WE HAVE GOMEZ???!!! AAARRRRGGHHH!!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm not sure how many people have voted but it's SURPRISINGLY close at the moment with that difference in goals!

  5. read that article earlier.
thought it was funny when the long ball merchant carra said england can more out of carroll by not playing it long.
how many times a game does carra aimlessly punt it?
shame about gomez,he's a lethal finisher.

  6. gomez's stats in first two germany games in the euros-
had the ball all of 23 seconds and scored 3 goals.

  7. hodgson not dalglish was the manager?? don't get it, hodgson didn't have the money to sign Gomez, Kenny did carra's mixing something up

    ReplyDelete
  8. would be the same problem for gomez............................lack of service.
andy carroll is part of the future for liverpool and england.
he is trying and getting better all the time, give the boy a break.
one season and hes a bad player and always will be...............christ!!!
he could be the same kind of player and impact of drogba, minus the diving etc.
its not like kenny played 4-4-2 all the time with him and the support of another striker. we need propper wingers, end of.
    judge him then

    ReplyDelete
  9. hodgson was after him in the summer, the club were still interested in january when kenny took over.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Did I say it was a revelation?  Read the headline:  Carra CONFIRMS.  It was a rumour before but this is the first official confirmation that LFC were in for Gomez.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Give Gomez service, he is absolute quality. But I guess if we gave the likes of Suarez and Carroll better service, than they would have scored more than they have. Though rather have Gomez as he actually has proven himself somewhat, whereas Carroll was always a gamble as he didn't have a lot of experience at the time we signed him. Gomez was definitely close to leaving when Van Gaal was there. Even though he might not have much else to his game, he is terrific in the box.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Carroll played 10 minutes in a large portion of those games. Gomez has had his share of dry spells. It seems like this website revels in pointing out the negatives only.
Where's the column about Carroll scoring the opening goal in his first competitive game for England? (and what a goal it was!)
Oh yeah...that wouldn't fit into the slate Liverpool at all costs ethos.

    ReplyDelete
  13. wow what a hard question, to be honest I didnt know who to vote, its so difficult!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hard? Are you serious? :-) 11 goals vs. 55 goals during the same period? What has Carroll done in the last 18 months that matches anything Gomez has done?

    ReplyDelete
  15. If you don't like it, leave. I'm not interested in your bitching.

    ReplyDelete
  16. In gomez first season in the bundesliga, he got 6 goals in 30 games. He turned 21 that season.

    ReplyDelete
  17. why would one goal in an england game deserve an article? is it because he scores so infrequently that you think one goal merits an article all to itself?

    ReplyDelete
  18. At bayern they have robben...ribery..lahm.. They deliver brillant balls n gomez scores from it? It isn't carroll fault we are not providing the assit.. If we get the ball in he will get onto them...like he showed against sweden. We need better delivers into the box

    ReplyDelete
  19. gomez has had service from ribery robben muller kroos and shwinstiger
carroll is only getting service and from gerrard and sometimes suarez

so if gomez came to liverpool i dont think he would get more goals then carroll

    ReplyDelete
  20. another shite story

    ReplyDelete
  21. If that's the case, how did Suarez score 17 goals?

Top quality players do the business, and Gomez would (IMO) score way more goals than Carroll.

    ReplyDelete
  22. hindsight is a wonderful think. More Liverpool player bashing. here goes another comment that will never be seen. Reckon its about 6 now. All with valid points. Nice. No wonder everyone else laughs at this site.

    ReplyDelete
  23. And this is going to help Carroll's confidence in what way? I mean, we've got Carroll, not Gomez, so what's the point? Carroll's just starting to show some of the form he had at Newcastle, and confidence is a fragile thing, so why write articles like this? It can only harm our chances if you think it through.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If you're referring to the 2005-6 season with Stuttgart, Gomez got 9 goals overall in 32 appearances, only 7 of which were starts.

Additionally, Carroll is 23, not 21; and when Gomez was 23 in the 2008-9 season, he got 33 goals and 7 assists.

    ReplyDelete
  25. carroll is crap simple as dat we need finishers not donkey shit

    ReplyDelete
  26. I hope it was sarcasm, but you can never tell sometimes...

    ReplyDelete
  27. A few people have said it

Ribery, Robben, Schweinsteiger, Lahm = decent service

He is class though. Big, strong, powerful and confident.

Hodgson was jettisoned on January 8th 2011, Is this when the move broke down?

    I don't believe this story.

Carra shouldn't be talking about this anyway, way too soon and could potentially be detrimental to Carroll

    ReplyDelete
  28. Give over.  As if stuff I write can damage the confidence of LFC's players. If Carroll read this and it affected his confidence then it would confirm that he's not mentally tough enough to make it at LFC.

I haven't slagged him or denigrated him; I've just stated facts: Gomez has scored signficantly more goals that him.

It's no secret that I think Carroll is wrong for LFC; the club will never prosper with a lumbering target man upfront.  That tactical plan belongs in the 1980s, not at Liverpool.  The likes of Villa, Bolton et al might be able to get away with a system that promotes hoofball, but Liverpool should be aiming for fast moving, technical pass and move football, and progress towards that will be stunted as long as Carroll is a first team regular.

    ReplyDelete
  29. not without service he wouldnt

    ReplyDelete
  30. Carroll had plenty of service, he just wasn't good/fit/technically proficient/balanced/intelligent enough to make it count. Gomez is infinitely more mobile and balanced that Carroll, who spends half time time on the deck after falling over.

    ReplyDelete
  31. If Carroll was playing in the Bayern team over theame period he would have scored more. As the cute little meerkat says on compare the market, SIMPLES. You can not compare apples and pears!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Could have, would have, should have. Hindsight is 20/20, there's been a lot of articles on 'the one who got away' and not just Liverpool either. I'm sure it was at Euro '96 that Fergie sent a scouting team to watch Zidane but, as he was injured and didn't play, they ended up with Poborski instead.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, Jaimie, you might be right that Carroll will not suit our promised new style of play and maybe didn't suit the brand we were playing last season, but for people to say Carroll is crap is a bit much.

Rodgers may decide that he can adapt Carroll to his style and as an option, rather than the spearhead of our attack he may have value.

Your comment about mental toughness just doesn't stack up. Many world class players (and I'm not saying Carroll is such) still have periods of poor form due to loss of confidence. We are all capable of succumbing to criticism and I really don't think you help the teams cause by constantly knocking our players.

You have a different opinion, so you'll keep doing it, but do some proper research on sports psychology and you may see it differently.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You make it sound like I am the only one who criticises LFC players. Every fan - including you - has players they don't rate, and they criticise them endlessly, whether it's with friends, on forums, or at games. Yet these same people get on my back for being critical of players?! Total hypocrisy. Players receive a hell of a lot more criticism from the national press than they ever receive on here. I don't personally attack players, I use facts to back up any criticism I may have. You may not like it, but that kind of criticism is valid.

    ReplyDelete
  35. PS, how come you deleted the response from Margaret..... To my earlier comment. It didn't seem to break any of your posting rules?

    ReplyDelete
  36. It was a sniping comment, which denigrated the site. All such comments are deleted.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What if City, lets say, signed Carroll and Liverpool got Gomez?

Maybe the same people would be voting for Carroll and cursing "flop" Gomez.

    Just something to think about.

    ReplyDelete
  38. ur an ass jamie k carrol is shit

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm not actually saying that it's not valid and yes there are many players in our squad that don't impress me, but isn't it better to praise the good players, encourage those who could be better and accept that we are not City or Chelski, so what we've got is what we've got.

Rodgers will have to spend carefully after the profligacy of previous LFC managers in this area (and I include my beloved Benitez in this) as FSG will not be giving him an open Chequebook. This means that some of our squad will not be of the quality that we would all like over the next 6/12 months, so I feel that we should get behind all our players, at least until they are moved on.

Let's back all our boys while they wear the shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  40. spearing is better than carroll ynwa

    ReplyDelete
  41. I take your point, and what you propose is definitely a valid way to proceed. I guess we just see things differently. For me, the critical approach is a cornerstone of LFC's success. If you read anything about the Shankly/Paisley/Fagan era, a key component of success under those managers was continuous improvement, and never settling for the status quo. Player accounts from that era detail how the likes of Ronnie Moran et al were always critical, even when the team was constantly winning. The same goes for Rafa Benitez - read any of the biogs of players he managed and they all say the same: he was never satisified, and was constantly critical and looking for ways to improve. I'm not the greatest fan of RB's management style, but his approach took the club to second in the league in 2008-9, so his internal style of always pushing for improvement obviously had an impact.

Criticism = winning mentality, and always pushing for the highest standards.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Rafa tryed to get him on loan but at the time bayern wanted 10 mil,lfc said no and the rest is history

    ReplyDelete
  43. how old is gomez ? gomez is on form, carroll was on form at newcastle, gomez has not been overly consistant has he?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm 52, so I was around in the Shanks/Paisley era and times have changed. Back then, when we were winning everything and arguably the most successful club in the world for a time, more players wanted to play for us.

After successive seasons away from Champions League football, we are not so attractive, despite BR's comments saying that everyone wants to play for us.

Criticism is the Policeman style of management. Positive reinforcement and encouragement is the Coach style of management.

Actually, both styles can = winning mentality, and always pushing for the highest standards.

Much as I rate Benitez very highly, I feel his man management wasn't the best, although he did most of his criticism privately, based on player comments. Pointless, I know, but just imagine if we'd kept some of our best players, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres etc.

A harsh critical style will be counter productive with the pampered, overpaid, prima-donnas that largely inhabit the game now.

Praise them for what they do well, show them how they can improve with the right coaching, and encourage them by saying that you know they've got it in them.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Criticism is valid?
Only when it it's Jaimie K doing it.
When other people do it, he calls it sniping, denegration & harrassment!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. people, i admire Gomez, for me he is a world class, maybe the best striker (in my opinion),but we must have faith that one day we will be proud to have Caroll amongst us...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Again, this is a meaningless comparison of 2 footballers due to the gulf in standards between them. I always think AC should cost 10 mil pounds and nothing more. Having a serious thought, even at 10 mil pounds, he was a flop last season. But some dudes that were previously in LFC thought John Henry is another oil oligarch landed in EPL and started throwing his money furiously. Even then, those abysmally ignorant dudes got it all wrong, 35 mil pounds for a boy that scored 11 top-flight goals in his short career. This should go down in history as the most silly transfer dealing in the world of football unless we manage to pull off another even more silly deal, highly unlikely though since those champions were removed. Do not think Torres and Shevchenko were bigger flops, they were world class footballers before Chelsea paid silly dollars for them. They were gambles that did not pay off.

Anyway, I should be able to see this beloved term 'net spending' very soon. It is really hard to explain the term to normal people from a business point of view. Though it should be easier to explain it to an oil oligarch, 'No problem, only 35 mil pounds into the drain, I'll give you another 300 mil pounds to make the term 'net spending' looks even more silly'. Also, I should be able to see phrase like 'Relax people, AC was FOC since we got 50 mil pounds for Torres'. IMO, we might have made a negative sale in Torres deal if the following is true, Torres=AC+15 mil pounds. Torres cost 22.4 mil pounds, so I paid 7.4 mil pounds for a replacement that contributed 11 goals in 56 appearances. Though, I will never bitch about a 7.4 mil pounds young unproven striker. After a wasteful 2011, it set us back at least 3 years from a CL spot. It is only 3 years if and only if all the other top teams come to a standstill which is, impossible! My personal goal for LFC this season is to narrow the gap for fourth position and not finish below Everton FC again.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think thats a blinkered view. Zlatan is a big lad, Drogba are the two that come straight to mind. He's shown he is strong on the ball and has technique.

23 is young for a striker of that style, most tend to peak in their late 20's rather than the smaller, faster ones, like Owen, Torres etc who peaked earlier and are now finished.

    ReplyDelete
  49. jaimie you make me laugh dude ,you just say you havent slagged him then not a sentence after , you call him a lumbering target man ,you tell me how that isnt describing him in a negative way ? , tell me honestly jaimie have you ever played football in your life and succeded at it i bet not ,but some how you write articles ,that are hypothetical crap , you just say that liverpool isnt suited to a lumbering big man up front isnt gomez a big man up front ,needless to say dude your talking about 2 different players , i could sit here and be hypothetical and say carroll might score more then gomez next year but doesnt mean a thing , and im pretty sure back in the 1970s toshack was a big man up front with a little man and well im pretty sure keegan and toshak worked well with each other , im sure brendan rogers can still get liverpool to play keep ball and still find a way of still wipping ballls in the box for carroll , im sure if gomez was playing for liverpool the same mentality in the players of playing hoof ball like you describe would still be the same regardless if it was gomez or carroll

  50. jaimie,
i have read this blog/posts/comments for a good year or two now, and mate you really need to grow up. its clear that you have a big influence in the liverpool web community, and as a liverpool fan (which i assume you are) you are not helping the club or supporters. Often i understand your point, and there has been a lot to question and even be dissapointed with in the last few years. but please mate, get on board, start posting some positivity. the internet is the most influential tool we have these days, dont spread hate of the club just to frustrate people. you wanted dalglish gone and a new young manager in, we have that now. please, dont just focus on the negative. its importnant to not be biased and one-eyed, especially when writing about something as emotive as a football club, but i think that you are an inverse rose-tinted fan. there is enough happening at the club to think that the future might be positive, so lets get behind them, and maybe this new system will work out. you really do play a big role mate, an increase in positivity would be admired by all.

  52. its amazing you debate against others so your points heard the minute we debate back and its not to your liking you dont let our posts even make it to your wall ,so whats the point lol specially when your talking about criticism and you cant handle it your self lol

    ReplyDelete
  53. You write articles in which you criticize everyone and everything. But no one may then criticize you. If you can not take the criticism, you should stop writing.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Carrol is our player not Gomez, stop being so negative...We can all say what if we signed this or that player, fantasists are us!

    ReplyDelete
  55. There is an easy fix for your depression:

Replace Ribery with Downing, and Robben with Henderson ......
and Gomez would have scored a lot less than Carroll has.

Carroll is a better player than Gomez, time will prove it, just as long as we replace our winger donkeys with real players.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Its all down to service, Carrol has started to work for the ball, there is no time for any player to be paid all this money for nothing, Gerro has made a difference in that he supplies that service.  Andy is as good as Gomez bar the service, we need him to play deeper, look at the last game for England, he is never in the box when the crosses come in, but Wellberg is there, we need to twick his tactics a bit, so that he can threaten opponents with tap-ins too.  Any will come good soon.

    ReplyDelete
  57.  Just as he is a 'Big Man' doesnt mean you cant play fast attacking football along the floor etc. It is an option for a quick clearance but he is also capable of joining a slick passing game. His ability to defend set pieces is also a bonus.

    ReplyDelete
  58. spearing is not. he is sh*te. huffs and puffs but ultimately falls down.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Sorry but you cannot compare Carroll's stats to Gomez's stats ,for 1 he played with much better players and in a different country were the football (imo) all round is not as good as the all round capability of Premier teams. Gomez is better for sure but the comparisons are not worth the mention.

    ReplyDelete
  60. not 100% fault on player...for me is d mgr tactical prob...never fully utilize his player...e.g. just look back at torres at chelsea same prob....

  61. You say you don't personal attack players. Your attack no downing with your DVD cover a while ago says otherwise!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Gomez is a finisher pure and simple. Watch him at the euro's, he never works back and doesn't move outside the lines of the pen area. Bayern tend to dominate 90% of the games they play in Germany and create loads of chances for him. Would we do that at the moment? If we didn't do that you would get nothing else at all from him.

  65. My thought exactly MG.. This isnt something that we are just reading about. When we were after Gomez it was all over the news and on every website. Short memory...

    ReplyDelete
  66. I have to say this is bad "journalism". You are saying that Gomez was a replacement for Torres, Gomez was meant to partner Torres, Carroll was the replacement for Torres. It is much more accurate to say that Suarez is the man we may not have bought had it of been for Gomez signing, afterall Suarez was bought to partner Torres. Also you state that Hodgson was in charge when we went for Gomez, which is true, however Dalglish was in charge when we signed Carroll. Very misleading

    ReplyDelete
  67. Not too quick on the sarcasm huh?

  68. God there are some morons that post on this website. Accept it, any sane person would have 55 GOAL!!! Gomez over 11 GOAL!!! Carroll. So I guess you would rather have Suarez over Messi too...

for caroll to have 55 goals wouldnt he need the same service

    ReplyDelete
  76. What's to say Gomez would have come to England and been a massive Flop??? Hardly set the world alight in the champs league final and ultimately cost Bayern the Cup!!!!

Brilliant Header by Carroll on Friday night!!! Who knows, if the system suits carroll he may well just prove you and millions of doubters wrong!!
Everyone has got to accept he looks more hungry and much better physically than he has ever been since joining for stupid money.

12 league goals and plenty of assists next season!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. jaimie your going on stats and facts right???? since jan31st 2011 how many games has gomez started compared to carroll???? the fact you think had the service for carroll just shows which end your talking from mate pure and simple!!!! lets forget carroll and gomez for a minutes last season, our main player to whip a cross in or provide carroll with the service was downing..... now tell me how many goals and assists downing got for us last season???? and now how many did hendo get as he was used as our main right midfielder last season???? i pretty sure 1 single player on the wing for munich got more than both liverpool players put together which just shows the fact the service is not there for carroll....... you have also said why did saurez get 17 goals if the service is not there..... well thats simple really saurez made alot of his chances through his ability to take on 3,4 or 5 players and through the smallest of gap 2 complete different players...... its like comparing messi to shearer complete different style even shearer was mid 20's before he started becoming a world class striker...... secondly carroll had that awful injury lets face it could have ended his career which would have taken alot more time than people actually think to get over........ i think you need to give the young bloke a break and have your say after a season or 2 before slating him.......

    ReplyDelete
  78. It was Robben that cost them the CL and the league (bit of an over-reaction as its a marathon but it was a crucial game at a crucial part of the season)!
Missed the penalty against Chelsea and bottled it as he didn't want to take a penalty in the shoot out. Missed the penalty against Dortmund in the league in the crucial head to head game and played that Poland striker onside for the goal.

Oh and he was playing his own greedy game again in the Euros and the Dutch are out.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer person.....

    ReplyDelete
  79. 'how much it changed their season' - well without him, where do you think they would have finished? I doubt they would have got CL football.

  80. Gomez has predatory instincts and a great first touch. He is also a great headerer of the ball and has every asset that carroll has and better... Btw  Jenny do you have facebook ?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Why didnt Gomez demand to take the penalty? Because he missed 5 cahnces prior to extra time, he aint all that!!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Woah!i feel that i have to jump in here. I don't think that the lack of sufficient service is the only reason that Andy Carroll failed to score. Suarez has been the lone striker many a times and has been able to find the back of the net. He too relied on the poor service but was more successful in finding the goal. The difference between these two players comes down to the player's individual creativity. While Andy Carroll  usually thrives when somebody has already set the table for him, Suarez on the other hand can create space for himself in the box to score. Ofcourse Carroll is good in the air, he needs to add a little bit more to his offensive arsenal .

Mario Gomez on the other hand is a complete player.   Thrives off good service and can create his own shot. Carragher is wrong in saying that Liverpool almost signed "super Mario." I remember reading an article about it during that crazy period when Torres put in for a transfer with only 24 hours left in the window. Liverpool essentially tried to sign anybody who it thought it was available. Mario Gomez was one of the players that Liverpool inquired about . Gomez did not want the move turned us down and Bayern Munich was not prepared to let him go either (not for cheap anyway). The deal was far from being completed . It wasn't even close to being completed. So "almost" does not accurately describe the transfer negotiations at all.

    ReplyDelete
  91. i know that many players had a falling out with Van Gaal while he was at Bayern. I didn't ever play for Bayern Munich and I had a falling out with Van Gaal. I didn't know that Gomez almost left. I know he turned down an approach from Liverpool during that "crazy Chrismtas Window" that saw Torres put in a request to leave. If Gomez had come over to Liverpool he would have raised the level of play around the squad. He is a quality striker even when he was still with Stuggard.

    ReplyDelete
  92. different league, bet he wouldnt score half that in the prem , our strikers over the past few years including suarez have all failed to score torres was the last decent goal scorer and he went down hill after his injuries and benitez's sacking but its the rest of our team failing to give our strikers many one on ones or early balls into the box, i'm sure even if it was gomez we got we'd still be with out those extra goals.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Gomez has very little right to demand to take a penalty throughout the season as Robben is their designated main penalty taker. Hence the Bayern fans anger at the time for when Robben chose not to take part in the penalty shoot out. Robben has taken most of Bayern's penalties this season, ergo, he took them against Chelsea, Real and Dortmund this season.

Gomez  isn't the only good player to miss chances, Suarez missed loads last season but he is treated like fucking royalty.

  94. Don't forget that Gomez had a bloody awful match against Chelsea - unfortunately. I was rooting for him as I detest chelsea but the fact is that nobody could have done less. Still, it is clear he is a much superior striker to Carroll, fair enough.

  95. To start with, there is service. Downing is now worlwide known as the only winger in the entire world that will run at defenders and then run the way he came. As for Henderson, he's not even a winger!!! Carroll has not been given the service. How many of the Carroll apps were starts? He spent a bit of time on the bench! Then there was the time Carroll played in a 4-3-3 against Newcastle. Suarez and Bellamy either side of him, how is a 6ft 5 lump gonna head the ball with no crosses? I agree Gomez is a better player but Carroll has had little to go on. Yes, Carroll was expensive. Yes, in some games he should take full blame.
