Thomas insists: £7m playmaker will sign for LFC "without a doubt". Good news?

Earlier this week, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hinted that he is interested in signing Icelandic international Gylfi Sigurdsson. Prior to Rodgers' departure from the Swanswa, the coveted midfielder was all set to sign a permanent deal with the Welsh club, but Sigurdsson himself has today confirmed that he favours a move to Liverpool, and according to BBC Wales pundit Mickey Thomas, a move to Anfield is practically guaranteed.

Speaking to the BBC, former Wales International Thomas - who scored 15 goals in 110 games for Manchester United during his playing career - seemed absolutely certain that Sigurdsson would soon be a Liverpool player. He insisted:

"Without a doubt, he’s going to choose Liverpool. They’re a massive club with massive history and more potential of winning things as well. He has to look at it from that point of view.

“And yes, he’s done fantastic at Swansea, he’s been a great player for them. But he’s got to look after himself and I think his future will be away from the Liberty Stadium"

£7m-rated Sigurdsson grabbed seven goals and three assists in seventeen starts for Swansea last season, and he's desperate to continue his Premier League adventure. He told MBL:

"I expect not to stay at Swansea. My desire [is] to continue playing in the Premier League and Liverpool...is a big club that has a glorious history. English Premier League is the platform that I want to be [playing on] and hopefully I will continue to play in that division".

After the Andy Carroll debacle, is it wise to spend big bucks on a player with limited exposure of top-flight English football? Ordinarily, I would be wary of such a move, but Rodgers has already worked with Sigurdsson, and knows what he's all about/how to motivate him, so it's arguably not as much of a risk.

  1. I must admit that although I have seen his goals, I'm not familiar with his other attributes.

I would imagine that the goals and assists are a bonus to other attributes which match Rodgers philosophy.

I feel as positive now as when Rafa joined us, coming after his triumphs in La Liga.

Looking forward to this revolution and 65% meaningful possession as normal.

Brehon Law, don't even reply to me unless it's an original thought of your own. Enough mindless bleating

  2. what?! 10 mill ? i thought it was under 7 mill ?, price just went up exponentially for liverpool as usual ?

    (i voted yes)

  3. He looks like a good player to me. He's got good skills, a good shot from distance, good dead ball taker and he's only young. Think he would be an excellent buy. As for Carroll Jaimie, yes he's had a poor season and hasn't scored the goals he should have but, he has started to look like a player in the last six weeks of the season. He looks fitter, his touch and technique have improved and he's dominating in the air. Can't you give him a bit more time before writing him off?

  4. How is it 10 million, when the fugure for Swansea was 6.8million???

    ReplyDelete
  5. Mickey Thomas never managed Wales. He played for Wales but never managed us!

    ReplyDelete
  6. LFC should stick to the £6.8m or less quoted to Swansea if they really want to sign him. The price can't go up by £3m coz LFC came calling. The club should not be held to ransom, £6.8m minus or STUFF him!!

  10. Think he could do a good job for us cant be any worse than Adam, disagree completely with your Andy Carroll debacle comment. Carroll will be a revelation in the euros and next season in the PL. But hey to satisfy you Andy Carroll is sh1te supporters lets get rid of him for a massive loss and let another club reap the benefit of a fit and confident Carroll. IMO I would get rid of Suarez before Carroll purely because of the disrepute he has brought to the club (IMO he was innocent in the Evra affair)

  11. Never seen such a high precentage for supporting a signing on this website.

  12. Hes going for 6.8 mil, the fee hasn't changed a single bit. Sigurdsson may well negotiate a higher wage, but the actual fee is still the same as it has always been. It's a yes, based on the fee. Comparing him to Andy Carroll shows a lack of understanding of both the players involved and their respective fee's. We agreed Carrolls fee in light of the Torres fee. I wonder how many times this will be used against Andy Carroll? Sigurdsson is a totally different player from a totally different club who we happened to have just taken their manager. Sigurdsson will sign for us if BR wants him, which seems inevitable.

  13. I agree I dont belive this Kanwar is an LFC fan, he denied money to one of the Hillsborough Charities after making a bet and losing, he constantly slates the club and everybody involved whilst supporting some ludicrous views on how the club should be moving. I think he is a false who is simply trying to stir as much trouble as possible.

  14. With Aqua and Cole coming back we've got 8 midfielders. Why on earth do we need another? Wingers, wingers, wingers - like Eljero Elia not predictable premiership mediocraty

  15. no need for wingers with suso, sterling and silva in reserves... feeling really good about BR and i believe he can bring usw back to glory

  16. Although I agree, I don't think we had anywhere near the creativity we needed last year in central areas or on the wings. If we sign Sigurdsson thats effectively 3 new creative midfielders for the squad when counting Aqua and Cole. We need this creativity, we do need to focus on the wings too and i think Rodgers will deal with this in due course, however my main concern is a finisher, we do not have a finished article striker like we have always had. The lack of goals last year reflects this. This is not a Carroll or Suarez bash however,  I feel Carroll is a player who is improving and will soner rather than later hit the goals left right and center and Suarez will always be the creator in my eyes. If we buy a good finisher on top of the mentioned previously, could be a good year to be a red.

  17. yes i agree we need wingers we should go for adam johnson and affelay will cost 16m for both, sell downing and charlie adams for abwt 10m and finally get a proven goal scorer like maybe hunterllar, or if we can gt higuain

  18. Charlie Adam was doing a great job at Blackpool before joining us, but didn't bring that form to us. Hope Sigurdsson can, if he decides to join us.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's not a massive amount of money and it all comes down to how highly Rodgers rates him. I'm sure that Rodgers understands the difference between the kind of player you have at Swansea when all you're trying to do is survive to the next season and the kind of player you need at Liverpool, especially when you're talking about challenging for the title and competing in the Champions League. Rodgers isn't stupid and he'll know if this kid is good enough to be a star in the Premier League rather than a good player in an average team.

And I can't see us keeping all these midfielders together, certainly not if there will be new signings. Charlie Adam is bottom of my list right now and I can see him being sold if we sign anyone new. Rodgers will asses what Aquilani is capable of and what he wants to have personally as a player. He's still a player that commanded a 20 million pound fee. Cole can try his luck and if he's good enough to work well in the new system then let's keep him. It would be a shame for guys like Shelvey and Spearing if they didn't get regular roles in the team but this is where we are: you're either good enough right now or you're not. No more waiting for potential to come good. Many of our young players have had plenty of game time to show their stuff and there should be no more room for bedding them in.

  23. At 7m, and as a tried and trusted player under rodgers(at 2 clubs now), keeping in mind his goals tally and overall play, id say its a risk worth taking. we are not in the big league of signings anymore, we need bargains. Sigurdsson would be under relatively little pressure, he understands what rodgers wants, and he is a goal threat.
He plays behind the strikers, and has a fierce shot on him.
if we can move adam on, who clearly won't fit into rodgers plans, financially we'll be level. everything points to this being a good bit of business imo.

  24. not to mention that he's only 22.

    ReplyDelete
  25. his stats were more or less the same, he had less work to do at balckpool because the whole team was playing to help him and protect him, being at Liverpool just showed how weak his overall game is

    ReplyDelete
  26. LFCSense getting rid of our ONLY star player in the squad certainly makes no sense. Preferring to keep someone like caroll over suarez is utter nonsense...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Everybody who was at Anfield and involved in the Evra Suarez affair have left the club. This could be coincidence but Comelli, Dalglish, Cotton etc hardly covered themselves in glory. Suarez id without doubt a fantastic player, I happen to believe that he was innocent in the Evra affair, I also believe then if you dont like someone why should you shake his hand. In Suarez case he according to KD himself told the club he was going to shake his hand and thenchanged his mind. Suarez also doesnt for me play the game in the right spirit. I stop short of calling him a cheat but every self respecting Red would at least have to agree he takes gamesmanship to another level. If he played against us and did some of things he has we would all be baying for him to be banned etc a la Ronaldo when at Man Ure. I would sell Suarez because of the baggage that comes with him it would also be a massive statement of intent that no player is bigger than the club.
You will eat your words over Carroll just watch him next season

  28. Aqua may be a good player but he will never cut it in the prem we need to get shut premanently. Cole I think would be a great asset if BR can get him playing.

  31. If we sell Suarez, who is one of a very select few genuine World Class players left in our team on a basis of a left wing, Manc favouring, OTT, blown out of proportion, media crucification we might as well give up.

No doubt that French pansy milked the situation for more than it was and almost everyone including our own 'supporters' bought the crap.

Could it have been handled better by Liverpool yes. Was it an absolute f'ing farce. Again, yes it was. Pacheco's friendly twitter to Johnson just exemplifies how a 'none story' cultural misunderstanding was turned into an ugly affair. It was on par with an elementary school bust up. Embarassing.

  35. Spearing showed he was out of his depth but Shelvey showed greater potential.

  36. Good player. He'd fit in well and improve our midfield by miles. He's skillful, fast, strong and has a hell of a shot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think this is a bad signing, when he was at Swansea, he had the team around him, and was a key man, completely different to Liverpool, where Gerrard is the Key man and play maker when fit. Gylfi is also very selfish player, when he started with Swansea he fed Graham well, then 2nd half of his spell Graham hardly got a look in from him as Gylfi just shoots.  Liverpool does not play this way that suits him, and BR will not re create the success that he had ar Swansea, as BR did not employ it, he continued it that is all. he is not as great as people make him out.  but he is possessive

  45. Good signing! Creative, threat from outside the box and relatively cheap..

My main worry is our midfield as a whole. To press the opposition as BR requires will take structure, practice, and above all - Pace & Mobility. Our midfield is very slow over all and I think this is a major obsticle for BR.

Maxi - Hero, but lacks the yard of pace necessary
Adam - No need to comment
    Cole - Not quick enough
Stevie G - I feel he may have to re-invent himself (possibly as a holding mid, or be used very carefully. Prob not appearing every week)
Spearing - No doubt determined and tenacious but not all that quick.
Bellamy - Won't have the legs to press every week. But we knew that already.
Downing - I'm not convinced (at all)..
Aquilani - pace has never been an asset of his

    Players who will work:
Lucas - might just be the most important player in the BR system
Henderson - not a fan favourite, but extremely mobile and a tidy player overall
Shelvey - Needs to up his game, but he has all the attributes.

Overall, if we don't win the ball back quickly, the BR system won't work effectively. We need pace and mobility in Midfield!

Andy Carroll will have to work extremely hard to make the grade for this defensive effort. But I won't judge just yet.. And as for the kids - Well, just let them enjoy the game for now, and leave them out of the spotlight..

  46. Like his comment that ' Liverpool are a big club with a glorious history '! No mention of the fact that we are not in the Champions League that so many of these players nowadays seem to be obsessed with. Seven goals in seventeen games is a pretty good return. why is the enevitablr carrol this or that talk always happening. didnt anyone notice what he did to the european champions last game please for the love of what the priests say is god stop it. hes our player back him hes trying hard you can see it . as for this lad did you notice hoe swansea played us of the park at anfield now we have the ex swansea manager andhe seems to rate him .wether you like you tube clips or not is neither here nor there. we are lfc thats us all of us of course ave your say but back our lads back the new ideas back andy carrol and remember that we are still a team capable of beating anyone with some of south americas better player. whats relevant isnt your opinion but your support you sing the song i suppose so sing it and think about the words it a special place ive had some of my favorite moments at anfield and worst ones ie rises own goal yet no matter what the rest say we are respected in europe asia austrailia america every football person has heard of liverpool fc ands thats due to its fans as well thats you lot support our boys they are there because they were sought and bought and they will come good have faith . i like rodgers hes honest and that may prove his greatest attribute along with elouquence which kenny didnt have and dont think i dont love kenny but king an all that who needs kings its a hierarechy we are liverpool shankly said it and he made it itd be good to remember or find out about shanklyand what he said about fans so leave it out and lets get 100 percent behind our man and stop looking for idols i feel it our sickness . individual worship were the club is a unit a team it is lfc .YNWA

  52. Worth the risk at £7m and of course, a player that Rodgers is familiar with. He'll add the killer instinct from midfield me thinks that has been missing in central areas in the last third, especially in a attacking midfield role behind the front man, instead of Hendo. Wouldn't say he bossed the Swansea midfield as that was the likes of Britton and Allen, two very wise keepers of the possession but instead, he added to that possession ability of those two with his movement going forward. He is not afraid to receive the ball and take some responsibility in the last third, especially in central areas, which is where Hendo is not all that comfortable in. I like the look of him as a player and add in Rodgers factor, its worth it me thinks.

I am still worried about who is going to be Lucas' partner in central midfield (as I think this Iceland player is better further forward), as I don't rate Gerrard as a central midfielder in a two-man central midfield, let alone in a Rodgers system but who knows. Adam is just too sloppy. Hendo's conservative use of the ball could be a possibility in the right system but I have my doubts. Aqua-man, well, I don't know if that kind of deep role would suit him but there is potential there me thinks, with his technical ability. Shelvey has potential but maybe a season too early to be a first XI regular. A few maybes and most of them young ones, so I guess if FSG are going down the patience-route (i.e., two/three seasons of building) than I guess we should be patient too in letting some of the current players improve and adapt, especially Shelvey and Hendo (I don't rate him all that highly but could do a job in the long run I guess)

  57. Hey Jamie what are our chances of getting Mohammed Diame from Wigan on a bosman, he looks very strong on the ball, pretty quick aswell for a big fella, not to mention he can find the goals.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I watched him play live a few games and got to say hes a real talent. He was playing alot of games behind the striker and in front of the midfield last season for Swansea.
Hes only 22 years of age (23 this year) and his first season in the Premier League was outstanding. I watched the game @ Swansea V Man City and he was the best player on the pitch. He keeps the game moving with quick and accurate passes and has got a quality left foot.
I feel with Lucas defending the back 4 Gerrard and Sigurdsson can attack the opposition.
I hope we sign him along with Adam Johnson from City. I can see us selling Aqua and having Joe Cole back who I think will come good for us.
Next season for me feels different to any other. The pressure is not on us just like England at present. ( We agree Rome wasn't built in a day, we need to be patient)
The interview with Brendan Rodgers was real class. If Carlsberg done football interviews that's it!! He set the tone on how we will go forward so we all have to give him time. Any LFC supporter that thinks we will go forward without supporting the Manager is crazy.
Lets get the KOP rocking next season like the old days, and build Anfield to the fortress it always was.

  59. No one player has had more chances to prove himself than Andy Carroll. No one player has had so many people make excuses for him than Andy Caroll. I for one am tired of hearing about Andy Carrol's potential. I must say though that he did start to like the player he was supposed to be near the end of the season. I think that the lack of available strikers for the English national team has helped him immensely. I happy for him that he get's a Euro spot. I would pick Welback over simply because he had a better season than Andy.

As for Sigursson , i haven't really watched him play but a lot of people say his goals made a great difference for Swansea's strong performance in their first season in the PL. I don't know if we need another midfielder since we are getting Cole and Aquilani back. With Shelvy fighing for more first team foot-ball it is going to be a headache for the manager to keep everybody happy. I am in support for anybody who can score goals. If Sigursson can find the back of the net then i say let's keep him and get rid of Adams.

My take on Suarez is he never dives .

Once or twice in frustration I have noticed him over emphasize the foul committed against him but like I said that is born out of frustration over the biased prejudiced FA & its referees .

As for this supposed "Evra Affair" ?

I find it hard to understand how you can be so 100% against LFC & so 100% for Utd id in this matter especially after Evra acknowledged that he instigated the confrontations & insulted Suarez's family .

As far as I'm concerned Evra is a lucky man that Suarez didnt beat the living shlt outa him like he was begging for .

He made a terrific difference when he came on. Just think ifhe had started the result might have been different and KD might still be in charge. 86. most of your posts in response to what i write are sacastic Suarez never dives for instance is silly because he does we all know that so from now on dont respond to my posts then i wont need to be insulting

  87. suarez is a victim of his own stupidity nothing else. again the my club thing is sarcastic whats your point i made a typo

  88.  I wanted rid of him and I still do. He's crap. But why do LFC fans keep making the same comments about how brilliant Lucas is? Who the hell are they trying to kid? I must have read 500 times how he's proved the doubters wrong. The only conclusion I can come to is that they feel if they keep repeating it someone will believe it.

  89. If he's skilful, fast, strong and has a hell of shot he will be in a  class by himself at Anfield.

  90. True. Shelvey is thrice the player Spearing is. Quite frankly, Spearing should be kicked out hard but Shelvey is worth keeping a while longer.

  91. Very true.

  92. Why is it that LFC supporters are so terribly unfair? Some players - no matter how utterly dreaful they are - are merited worthy of one chance after another. Henderson is a case in point, but there are stacks of others. Other players only have to have a mediocre game and everyone is slating them. Peter Crouch did a bloody good job for Liverpool and is twice the player hopeless Carroll is, but nobody ever had a good word to say for him. I suppose winning six home games all season is really what the fans deserve. Very unlikely to improve next season without a huge change - and that simply isn't going to happen.

  93. Yes, it certainly is. So expect Liverpool to do it.

  94. real fans support their club whatever the state, good, bad or utter shite. we have no devine right to be the best, you have to work hard to get there. great, fu*k off elsewhere, we don't want or need turncoats like you. totally pathetic and embarrassing.

  95. Liverpool Supporters are generally credited with being extremely fair. I can only speak for myself IMO AC has taken a lot of stick this season from people outside of the club and from a few supporters but look at his games. He has had absolutely no support or service from the midfield or indeed his strike partner ..... Downing has been woeful and there are no excuses he is not a young inexperienced player we are talking seasoned international and I cant remember any other player who has performed so badly in a debut season. Adam again injured towards the end but he has performed awfully and there can be no excuses for his poor performances. Now Henderson is young is learning his trade. He hasnt set the place on fire but generally he has been tidy in his performances without being spectacular he needs to improve. There is no doubt next season will be a BIG season for both Carroll and Henderson.

  96.  You dont know me or anything about me therefore you can not state that my posts are anything other than what they appear on face value .

You are out of line insulting me for contributing my OPINION about Suarez .

In your OPINION "We" all know that Suarez dives , I totally disagree , at worst when he is frustrated at the biased treatment he receives from English referees he tends to show his disdain by over emphasizing the fouls committed against him , nothing more , he never dives , there is always contact , ALWAYS !

In my OPINION each & every impartial spectator can see that which is why Suarez has such a huge global following & support .

  97. seems bitter doesnt he !

    ReplyDelete
  98.  My point is Suarez is guilty of nothing other than not being English in England & being more talented & assertive than The English in England would like him to be , hence the horrendous discrimination , slander & persecution he is having to endure here .

  99. IMO our priority is to get the team playing like a team....that has to be the first issue to be addressed, hence Rogers coming in. Might be a bit underwhelming for some but i can see the logic behind getting him onboard.

If Rogers thinks this guy siggurdsen is a good signing and does look fairly useful then so be it, he's not expensive and would surely boost our current set up, okay he's not a top signing but he is young and talented and therefore has potential to become a better player for a better club...

We're not in the CL and we need to start afresh, which means lowering our expectations or at least accepting our limitations/pulling power, 2 seasons out of the top 4 and a poor league campaign under Kenny leaving us well adrift of the top tier is not exactly going to attract the current world class en vogue starlets to the Club....

As i said the priority should be re building and strengthening the team and working on our fluidity and cohesion, in short our style of play has to improve first and foremost, hopefully Rogers will know how to achieve those ends and more importantly the players need to be all pulling together unlike last season....

IMO we could do a lot worse than buy a decent playmaker who's a good dead ball specialist, knows how to score a pen and isn't going to cost us an arm and a leg.

  100. should have gone to specsavers mate

    ReplyDelete
  101. I actually agree a lot more with Brehon than with LFCSence about Suarez.

Suarez style of play is so tricky and all is made with so narrow movements and precise balance. That all contacts made upon him is crucial.

His trickery - that all of us love, has the consequence that some of you also dislike him.

the comment agout "Specsaver" is low.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Low blows , stupidity , arrogance & hypocrisy is par for the course here .

    ReplyDelete
  103. Which decade are you refering to?

Not since the 90's have Liverpool supporters been credited with being anything other than gormless deluded fools .

    ReplyDelete
  104. no not bitter, good luck next season.

    ReplyDelete
  105. not bitter at all, good luck for next year.i just dont think Rogers is the right man for a club who deserve to be at the top ,time will tell though.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I agree every bit, if i was suarez i would never have said anything back but would have ripped evra apart...he isn't racist, the way they use the word negrito in his country is completely different then to what we do here...and am not white and suarez isn't racist!!!

    ReplyDelete
  107. doesn't take much to excite you does it?
a handful of performances and the red tinted carroll glasses are on,looks like he won't start against france.some revelation.

  108. last time mate you write such garbage that I will not respond to any of your posts or replies again so write asmuch drivel as you like

    ReplyDelete
  109.  Negretto is the name of an ice lolly an ice lolly in Uruguay .

If yer goofing around with a loved one they call you their little Negretto like the French .

Or if a child is trying to annoy you you disregard them by refering to them as a little Negreto .

The nearest I think we have to it here  it is how the Irish modify the use of "Idiot" & make it multifunctional by changing it to "Edjit"  . as in ... "That guy is a fecking Edjit ! "... or  "go on & get out of my sight you bloody Edjit ! "

The Scots use the fruit "Plumb" similarly , its multi functional like if you missed a penalty they would point at you & laugh sayin "Ahahaha ... You Plumb !" Or like when a kid is trying to annoy you ... "Get outa ma'sight you Plumb !"

& Certainly like I'm sure yer aware both the Scots & The Irish have many more severe & harsh insults & I'm sure the Uruguayans have also .

It was nothing more than an English political witch hunt , killing two birds with one stone , successfully restricting the right to defend yourself & express yourself while also ell & truly putting the talented & uppity "Jonny Foreigner " well & truly in his place .

Suarez , his young family , his friends & supporters are the only victim in all of this .

Regardless of who you are or where yer from or how you look , if you step into a mans face & not once or twice but 3 times attempt to provoke hiim by insulting him & his family ?

Men have been killed for less .

    ReplyDelete
  110. That you'll what ?
