Liverpool striker Andy Carroll continues to polarise support amongst Reds fans, and World Cup winning defender Frank Laboeuf insists that the club may struggle to progress with the inconsistent Carroll leading the line.
Speaking to ESPN recently, the former Chelsea and France player - who famously man-marked Brazil's Ronaldo out of the game in the 1998 World Cup final - argued:
"My concern about him [Carroll] is that he's not the type of player who suits Liverpool's kind of football, which is why I'm not a big fan of him.
"Liverpool try to play on the floor, but Carroll is someone who is only useful when you play in the air".
This has been obvious since day one; Carroll is just not suited to the style of football Liverpool try to play, and I can't see how that is going to change. Carroll belongs in a team that's set-up to play to his strengths, and according to Labouef, he's suited to a typically English style of football:
"Carroll is a big guy - you use him when you launch long balls, and try to get the second ball".
Harsh but true. If Carroll had better technique, balance and close control, it would be a lot easier for him to fit into the team. A good comparison would be Peter Crouch; he's even bigger than Carroll, but he would (arguably) fit into Liverpool's current team because he has good technique and great close control.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who found it ironic that on the day Kenny Dalglish was sacked, two of his biggest flops - Carroll and Downing - undeservedly made it into the England team. Dalglish gets sacked because of their failure, but they get the ultimate reward? What is this, the Twilight Zone?!
I can only hope that Liverpool's new manager - whoever that is - shares Laboeuf's view, and sells Carroll as quickly as possible once he takes over at Anfield. Seriously, can you see the likes AVB, Fabio Capello or Frank Rijkaard building a team around Andy Carroll?

Stranger things have happened...
ReplyDeleteThey won't get rid of carrol. He showed in the last month that he can fit in and either way his performances up to that point have devalued him to the stage where we can't sell him without massive loss. A bit more time and a decent euro run will be his making.
ReplyDeleteGive Andy a chance he was starting to show promise in his last few games so lets just see, besides he only really got a consistent run in the team during the last part of the season. give him 6 months to prove himself. As for downing that's another story.....
ReplyDeleteOver the whole season you've got to say that Carroll has been disappointing. He didn't look fit, his touch and control was poor and he seemed to be misjudging the flight of the ball when it was in the air. But over the last six weeks of the season he began to look the part. He looks fitter, his touch and technique have improved (FA cup final goal) and he's dominating in the air. His performance against Chelsea at home was very good considering the centre back pairing he was playing against. I'm not sure if the last six weeks justifies a place in the England squad though, sure Crouch will be a bit upset by that. If he takes that form into next season I'm sure he could yet be a success at Liverpool and fit into whatever system we play.
ReplyDeleteI can understand Carroll getting picked basically down to the fact there just is a total lack of English strikers about. I think Bent would of went instead of him if fit. I think Woy tossed a coin and Carroll won and Crouch lost.
ReplyDeleteAs for Downing being selected 36 goals no goals no assists, even the Everton goalkeeper scored more than him.
I cannot recall Downing ever having a good game for England, when he signed I couldnt believe they paid that much money for a crock of shit, I used to despair when I saw him playing for England, Adam Johnson who cannot get a game due to City's much larger squad is twice the player Downing is. Not sure if he is English or not but even Moses at Wigan would be better, he is exciting and unpredictable. Dyer and Sinclair of Swansea are better than Downing. He must be the worst player ever to play for Liverpool I have nightmares about the guy he should be sold to Hartlepools or someone he is so useless.
I agree, we play better football with out him. Just need a clinicle striker.
ReplyDeleteHe was bought tax wise. Torres decides to go last minute, we have 50mil to spend before the end of the tax year or the tax man is going to take 25mil in tax. That was the last transfer window to spend it. We paid 35mil for Carrol. 17.5mil was tax money 17.5 LFC. We sell him for 20mil, LFc make 2.5 mil profit , 15mil loss offset to the next tax year. good business deal. But not good football deal. Who did buy him ????.
I see progress in Carrolls technical play the last games. Dribbling and bicycle-kicks etc. Give him time. His workrate and stamina also seemed to increase towards the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, Dalglish never managed to create a style who would use his extreme arial ability. That does not mean that another manager wont.
Carroll is very good on the floor too and his link up play with Suarez was excellent at the end of the season. The only thing he needs to add to his game is goals (as do many of his teammates...), but for a number 9 he clearly needs to score a lot more.
ReplyDeleteThe Carroll of the beggining of the season was the one Labeouf described. The Carroll of the end of the season was the one you compared with Crouch. I think that says it all. Carroll should stay and is a valuable player.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. Carroll bucked up his ideas to get into the England squad; why didn't he perform with the same desire all season? Irrespective of how well he players, he's still a limited player, and Liverpool should not (IMO) build a team around a lumbering, technically inept target man. How many top teams in world football do that?
ReplyDeleteThat's the reason he's made the England team. England with RH will play like Liverpool under him. That's why he didn't like skilful players like Agger. The good thing about him taking the England job is that his friends at the London press will find out just why exactly we didn't want him at Liverpool.
ReplyDeletei think downing is much more effective than Hendeson who is to scared to hold on to the ball and can only pass sideways and backwards.
ReplyDeleteAgree completely bout Adam Johnson, would love to see him at Anfield next season. I'm not a big fan of Downing but not so sure about worst player ever, I'd go for Voronin. Everytime he started in front of Crouch it made my blood boil!! Cheers Rafa.
ReplyDeleteWe should never have paid £35m for the guy, but there's no point in selling now and getting a minimal return.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately we paid peak fees for a guy still in his development stages and it's going to be another couple of years before we see the best out of Carroll, but once we do, we should see a very good striker.
No i don't agree at all we should give him all his chances to make him a success for our team as we saw him against Chelsea in the FA CUP final...
ReplyDeleteMy main drawback on Crouch is the amount of petty fouls he gives away going up for headers, he hasnt got the physical ability of other similar tall men now and in the past , Carroll, D Ferguson, Les Ferdinand so he tends to climb all over you, on the continent they are clever though, they just let you win the flick headers and concentrate on the area it is being flicked too.
ReplyDeleteThe only other problem with tall players is that European refs give fouls against them constantly even when they havent done anything.
bicycle kicks?
ReplyDeletei didn't see any of them come off-just him landing on his arse alot.
when you say a 'style' that would suit his ariel ability, what would that be?
long ball/hoof it up to the big man football?
because carroll doesn't have the ability to hold the ball up well enough to bring others into the game.
Henderson has two goals and one assist in the league this season; a poor return, but Downing has zero, so clearly, Henderson is more effective.
ReplyDeleteI like Carroll and I think he will do well for us in the future. Watch this space. U remember having ago at Lucas and look what happened to him. He just needs more time.
ReplyDeletehow effective?
ReplyDeleteno goals and no assists in the league effective?
have you seen him play?
I recently read the book by Alan Ball, in 1966 he said Alf Ramsey's game plan was Nobby Stiles to win the ball, Alan Ball to pick it up run with it and then put it on the plate for Bobby Charlton who will do the rest as per the Portugal semi final game.
ReplyDelete' Alan my boy' Alf said 'your job is to get the ball from Norbert give the ball to Robert and he will do the rest.'
Sadly we dont have many players like that anymore, so the England song will be for the Euro's will be 'Homeward Bound' by Simon & Garfunkel
Give him a chance! Only played 11 prem games for Newcastle before we bought him! He has improved and will be a beast in seasons to come. Did you not see his goal in fa cup final? Great close control and finish. Suarez can teach him all that in training !
ReplyDeleteI've never had a go at Lucas; I was never on the 'Lucas is crap' bandwagon, so I don't where you got that from.
ReplyDeleteJaimie,
ReplyDeleteAgree with you 100% here! Carroll has shown his selfishness. I would sell him for playing better towards the end of the season. It proves he was a lot more capable than the efforts he put in whole season. I would say it is very unprofessional of him to take high wages and not giving 100% for team.
He may have improved in 2 games at the end of the season but I'm still not convinced.
ReplyDeleteCarroll would work well in a Sam Allardyce team but if you're a pass-and-move team, I just don't think he fits in. He's too clumsy, not quick enough, doesn't anticipate well and has a poor shot - a powerful shot - but a poor one in terms of accuracy.
Hand on heart, I wouldn't feel confident if FSG turned round and said, Andy carroll will lead the line for the next 10 years.
Exactly, Deebo. We only have finite lives; I don't want ten years of my LFC-watching life to be wasted having to endure Andy Carroll up front for Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteFalcao, man that is a bicycle-kick expert!
ReplyDeleteSome fantastic finishes in the recent friendlies that Atleti have had in the past 2 weeks such as the game against Cali. Check them out on youtube. Though don't know why Atleti are playing friendlies at this time of the year
Kanwar my dear boy, who exactley is going to pay anywhere what we paid for Carroll ? do you think FSG are willing to take such a hit on a recent investment that was bought for the long haul ?
ReplyDeleteEnd of the day Andy Carroll is a Liverpool player and will be for the forseeable future, unless your a journalist i take it you are a supporter, so do what your suppossed to do and support the team !
What even are your credentials anyway ? what you know about football could fit on the back of a postage stamp.
Carroll's problem was confidence which he seems to have gotten towards the season's end. His goal in the FA cup wasn't in the air was it??? He'll be better next season, no point in selling him. Adam is the the definite that has to be gotten rid of in a hurry.....if anyone would take him.
ReplyDeleteLets see if the new manager plays him cos obviously his attitude wasn't good under Kenny which is why he had such little game time r
ReplyDeletedifferent players suit different positions, its not just strikers, midfielders etc! you can't play modric and van der vaart in the middle of the parl together and still get the most out of both of them! this isn't fifa!
ReplyDeleteseems my comment was deleted, funny that.
ReplyDeleteBlind you might be. Haters always hate and see just what they want to see.
ReplyDeleteCarroll did a GREAT job holding the ball, tackling and winning back the ball, holding up the ball, bringing others into the game the last 3-4 matches.
He had a great bicycle-kick saved also.
What he need is early crosses. He got that, and scored a lot at newcastle. I dont believe he just suddenly turned into crap when he came to Liverpool.
Strangely.. ALL our players, new and old... even Reina, turned into crap under Dalglish.
Give them a chance under a new manager, maybe they turn out to be such a letdown after all.
Carroll CAN play with the ball on the floor, all this nonsense about him only being good in the air with long balls is a joke, think about how influential he has been since the Newcastle away game he's woke up and starting to live up to his potential, why crucify him now when he's on the up? Just be a fan and support your team, and the player who arguably has been our best player since March. - Justified by the fact he's won man of the match for 80% of the games he's played since then!
ReplyDeleteif someone wants Andy for 15m, sell fast n consider profit. If not, keep him as a useful sub. He is slowly fitting in but won't impact like Torres or Owen did....V still need 1 or 2 productive strikers.
ReplyDeleteHe has only had a mere 6 months of first XI football in PL before joining us. There really isn't much to go on, in terms of how good his goalscoring is in PL prior to Liverpool. So crap or great, either way, there isn't a long enough precedent, which makes it even more frustrating.
ReplyDeleteIf we sold Carrol now, the max we would get for him is 12 milion, because no team in the top six would bid for him and no one else has the money to give away. 12 million would also be a stretch for the clubs outside the top 6. We also, however do not want him losing games at liverpool while he learns how to play. The best solution as I see it is to send him out on loan to a middle table side that needs a striker. If he performs well then great that boosts his value, if not, well at least he wouldn't be underperforming in our team.
ReplyDeleteTechnically, Carroll is generally very mediocre at best. Crouch has a better touch than he does. Just keep things simple and direct with Carroll, as that is the way to play with him but whether that is the way the new manager likes his strikers to operate, who knows.
ReplyDeleteCarroll only bucked up becouse of the oncoming euro finals,he is not even half the player Crouch is,as for Downing he just irritates me.Off load these two and buy a technically gifted stricker who knows where the net is.Sorry but Carroll just is not a liverpool player imo.
ReplyDeleteCarroll strong in the air..don't make me laugh.Am sorry but he can't even judge the flight of the ball, and spends more time going down pushing into the back of players instead of competing than any other player i have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteIt's much too simplistic to say that because Carroll has the attributes of the "traditional english forward" he's not the right player for LFC, when I watched Liverpool play poorly this season, moves weren't breaking down because of Carroll we were poor all over the pitch, and when we played well (and still usually lost anyway) Carrol linked up fine with the midfield with the ball on the deck. I'm not denying he had a bad season but it's not because he's not the right type of player, he stuggled for confidence, fitness, and service. The first two seem to be returning, hopefully the team can provide the service next season.
ReplyDeleteCarroll playing well is an assett without a doubt, he gives us several ways of playing in attack, and gives us an outlet in defence. I hope he enjoys a good Euro Campaign, and comes back next season firing on all cylinders.
And how many Goals did he score on how many games in those six months may I ask?
ReplyDeleteI don't know off by heart but whether it is a lot or little, 6 months is not a long enough period to know how good Carroll is.
ReplyDeleteI agree, He is absolutely mediocre! But some make him out to be much less than mediocre. He is never gonna dribble like Suarez, and suarez will never win aerial challenges like Carroll.
ReplyDeleteVery few strikers can head the ball like Carroll, and at the same time be as technical as Suarez.
Look at crouch. He is tall, mediocre + technically (good for his size), but he could never head the ball like carroll still.
Dont expect to much too soon. If he continue to play like the last games i cant see why he should continue to get all the criticism.
But Voronin was free... Downing was £20m!!
ReplyDeleteCarroll is mediocre, in terms of technical ability but he has the potential ability to be a effective part of a direct and crossing-style team.
ReplyDeleteRightly or wrongly, he will always have the that big price tag around his neck and people will always bear that in mind when judging him. Hence, he will still maybe get criticism as the form he showed in the latter parts of the season still doesn't equate anywhere near the price tag around his neck (in my view). Harsh it maybe but that is football.
The only issue now is who will be the next manager of LFC? If the new manager is going to play typical English football, then AC will be alright. If the next manager is going continental, then he probably will take a lifetime to repay his 35 mil pound price tag.
ReplyDeleteAndy Carroll will be a fantastic player for Liverpool moving forward. I cannot believe any true supporter would not want to give him the opportunity to prove this. I know lets sell him to another club for 10 million and sit back and watch him develop into one of the best centre forwards ever to play for England. Frank Leboufes statement that says hes not a Liverpool type player so therefore I am not a big fan of him is utter drivel. Belongs in the same Bin as everything that Robbie Savage has to say.
ReplyDeleteYes true, 20million well spent. We have really wasted some money over the years.
ReplyDeleteMario Gomez, Luca Toni These guys are/were prolific but hardly fleet footed. A big lumberer can be a success if he's scoring. Plus, that nutmeg against Terry, the goal in the FA Cup final shows that maybe there's more to come from him (one can only hope). But you're right, I wouldn't build a team around him. For me if you was 12 mil and used as a plan B, that would've been fine. But for 35 mil, you expect an Aguero and that's the major problem. It's not Carroll himself, it's the fee. We're not City, we're not in the position to have a £30 mil player on the bench. We panicked bought needlessly.
ReplyDeletemaybe they should hire Duncan Ferguson as coach then to teach him a few tricks as he won everything in the air.
ReplyDeleteCarroll is a great player. His supply from the flanks were poor. The corner kicks and free kicks were shocking this year, so I dont blame him entirely
ReplyDeletewhat in your opinion is a Liverpool player
ReplyDeleteno one is free they take a huge wage in view of no transfer fee
ReplyDeleteThink Carroll still has potential to do a job for us and he was one of the better players, by far, at the end of the season. Think that the right manager can get results with him and we should pursue with him, as a plan b at least. It was always going to take time for a system that involved Carroll and Suarez to work, given their injuries and unreliability, but i think something was starting to come good towards the end of the season. Problem was the management were not able to set up the rest of the side.
ReplyDeleteIf Carroll could pull off a bicycle kick half as well as Peter Crouch then I would sit hear and say he has fully deserved his call up for the Euros. For Andy the bicycle kick is not an offensive weapon in his attack. It is more of a hilarious weapon in his attack.
ReplyDeleteJust like Titi_Camara says Carroll being such a big lad should have more upper body strength. He should be able to hold up the ball better to get other team mates into the game. He should not be played up front as a lone wolf striker for this very reason
I like Andy, but I agree with Jaimie--not a good fit.
ReplyDeleteProbably the best post of the day, Well said, Roger and out
ReplyDeleteEXACTLY
ReplyDeleteThis argument is so tedious - Lucas WASN'T good enough at the time when his performances was being criticized, and the club was dragged down around him. Now he has matured and become more confident in his game he is a good player for the team and there is no need to criticize his performances anymore.
ReplyDeleteI'd much prefer we stopped building our team around players before they're ready. Carroll and Henderson will undoubtedly come good eventually (having manager's that have absolute faith in you have a lot to do with a players success), as Lucas did, but at this point in time, they just aren't and should be fulfilling back up roles while they gain the confidence (and know how) to best impose themselves on games consistently.
11 goals in 19 games.
ReplyDeleteIt's LeBoeuf, NOT Labouef!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGood point Billy, and you will of course remember that Rodney Trotter Played 17 consecutive games for us without scoring and no one was on his case all the time.
ReplyDeleteRodney was defo plan B were as AC gives us another option whilst the game is in play both offensively and most certainly defensively in our box.
Too many people bang on that he is not worth 35 Mill and we could have got Aguero and all that rubbish so I will point out the obvious facts on this issue so hopefully they don't BORE us again with it.
As we know, when Margy Clark sped off to Chelsea at the 11th hour it left LFC with a Big problem, as you know Billy you can't just pick up top strikers at the drop of a hat ( although Newcastle seem to ) and KD wanted him with us, we all know that he is not worth 35 Mill, even he knows that, and his true value was probably around the 15 Mill mark, however he had only played for six months in the prem with Newcastle aged 21 and was Colossal for them Scoring 12 goals in about 20 games (as they played to his strengths ie, wingers putting good balls in, I don't think we can say the same can we ) anyway, without any question of doubt Newcastle would never sell AC for 15 Mill, however, (again as we know we had had a touch on Margy for 50 Mill) when offered 35 Mill they bit our hand off to do the DEAL.
The 35 mill was only to do a deal and has nothing to do with AC.
Hence the sack for Comolli for doing deals so costly to LFC with AC, 35 Mill, Downing, 20 Mill and the love child, 17 Mill.
As AC has come into form it will be good for him at the Euro's and hopefully he will carry that form on for us next season, and hopefully the Love child, (although I cant see much difference between him and Shelvey and he would have still been at Blackpool last season only for injuries) will get better.
DOWNING, I pray will get better with us next season as I truly think he bottled it playing for LFC last season I really do.
A very interesting point was made by Roger the dodger above where he says that a lot of our players new and old went Backwards under KD, unexplainable really but never the less true.
I totally agree with you over Euro refs with tall players Billy, I really think that is down to refereeing all that crap slow then fast type of gay Football which is totally the opposite of the Prem
Here Here Simbarr,
ReplyDeleteLoved you in the Lion King by the way......

Jesus Billy, We have real Forensic Accountant on the show
ReplyDeleteIs that supposed to be a joke about the Twilight Zone
ReplyDeletethank you for that musical interlude Paul. We all need a little James Brown from time to time.
ReplyDeleteDrogba's first season with Chelsea was, as I recall, a bit average and look at him now. The way Carroll picked his game up in the FA cup final shows that he can actually play, all he needs to do now is put that sort of performance in for 90 minutes every match.
ReplyDeleteDrogba: 16 goals and 5 assists in 30 starts in his first season. If Carroll had delivered that., no one would've been complaining.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if we are thinking about the same player. The Andy Carroll I saw stomp off the pitch in anger in that game against Newcastle after Kenny substituted him was not the player you are describing. That Andy Carroll is the one that has been pretty much around all season long . That was the Andy Carroll that Kenny wanted to trade for Carlos Tevez.
ReplyDeleteNear the end of the season another Andy has emerged. One that shows more promise . This Andy is playing with a lot more passion, and has started to actually use his size better to his advantage. Purely a better Andy of that there is no doubt. Really enjoyed his goal in the FA cup , fancy foot-work before blasting the ball into the roof of the net. That is the Andy everyone want to see i am sure.
The problem I have with your statement Phil is the fact that you say "he is good on the floor and his link up play with Suarez was excellent." I think that Andy's performances has been too inconsistent for you to make that type of comment. Most of the season his link up play was crap. He turned over the ball much too easily and he had a frustrating time up front. It got to the point that Kenny benched him and chose to play Suarez up front by himself.
To be honest if not for the lack of other viable strikers available to Hodgson Carroll won't be making his journey to the Euro's. I hope the experience only helps to help the latter Carroll re-emerge.
In my opinion this season has been a tale of two Carrolls.
other than Suarez during "the troubles" Carroll has been the next most controversial player last season. By this i mean it is not because of anything Carroll is doing that makes him controversial but basically what he is not doing in his case not scoring nearly enough goals.
ReplyDeleteIn defense of Carroll he is not to be blamed initially for the position he finds himself. It is really not his fault that he was purchased on deadline day for 35million pounds. A figure that was we have all come to find out is too inflated for his actual skill level. Due to the position that Liverpool found itself on deadline day when Torres turned in a transfer request. Comelli and Kenny had to quickly identify a quick replacement for Torres, and had no choice but to buy Carroll for what ever Newcastle was asking for. I am sure they would have purchased someone else if they had had more time to shop.
That being said Carroll was now expected to fill the shoes left by Torres. All the previous big target men for Liverpool have all been deadly finishers going back to Ian Rush, all the way to Peter Crouch with the exception of Fernando Morientes who struggled a little like Carroll to find the back of the net on a regular basis. Andy in my opinion was not ready for the pressure cooker situation that he found himself in leading the line for a big club like Liverpool. Sure while his goals helped propel Newcastle back to the premiere league a lot was not really expected of him with the Magpies.
In Anfield he was compared a lot to Torres and he found that he could not measure up. He is not nearly as skilled as the man he replaced, and not nearly as skilled as the man who replaced him at Newcastle. Cisse has who only joined the Newcastle in January last season has scored more goals in the short period than Carroll did all season. Andy Carroll is seen by many as a work in progress, someone who due to his young age has a lot of time to get his act together and raise his game to the next level. We have all seen glimpses of what his capable of near the end of the season.
I think that Andy Carroll is not the answer for Liverpool offensively right now. At this stage in his career he needs a less pressure scenario. Some people won't like what i am about to say but I will go ahead. I think that Carroll should be loaned out so that he can play without all the pressure he has had on him. I think a season away or even half a season away would do him a lot of good. He is now going to have to learn how to survive in a new environment at Anfield after the new coach takes over. He is going to have to prove himself all over again from scratch for someone new. He , Adams and Henderson won't have the special treatment they enjoyed under Daglish. In this new system I want to believe that only the best qualified players get to start. Andy is fortunate that Bent was not seen as fit enough to go to the Euro's so he was able to get a spot. I hope that the experience can help him raise his game to even higher levels.
Ultimately it is my opinion that Liverpool need more offensive firepower and I think that the club needs to purchase one more prolific striker to add to our striker pool. I think with three strikers Carroll will have good competition to prove to the new coach that he is the right choice to partner up front with Suarez. I also think that Liverpool should always play with two up front since goals have been hard to come by of late.
This is what the media have described it as and compared to his 32 goals the previous season with Marseille, it might have been seen as a dip in form.
ReplyDeleteAnd it was from 41 appearences, your '30 starts' stat, makes it appear more rosy.
Wasnt it Billy Jean not Billy Deane that Michael Jackson sang. Dont know what is was about maybe the tennis player
ReplyDeleteThe only other Billy Deane I have heard of was known as Dixie but dont tell anyone that.
But he spelt his name without an e on the end, so he is no relation.
My grandad was an Evertonian so he persuaded my mum to call me William with her not knowing who William Dixie Dean was. My dad wasnt into football he couldnt of told you what colour shirt Liverpool played in.
I got called Dixie in school much to my annoyance.
Hello Chibuzu, Nice to see you back.
