Ex-Red blasts Dalglish's handling of Raheem Sterling. Mismanagement...?

Former Liverpool defender Jason McAteer has criticised Kenny Dalglish's handling of Raheem Sterling, arguing that the Reds manager should've should've started the young winger against Fulham last night's premier league match.

Analysing the game for the official Liverpool FC website, McAteer was clearly disappointed by Liverpool's 'poor' performance, and bemoaned the 'lack of guile and craft' on display.

Sterling was thrown on for a 15 minute cameo near the end of the game, and Macca could barely hide his frustration with that decision, insisting that Dalglish got it wrong, and should've had the youngster on right from the start. He said:

"I would've liked to have seen Sterling start.

"If he's on the bench, he's obviously good enough to play the game, so why not play him? Just throw him on and see what he can do!

"It was an ideal opportunity for Kenny to play him; for the fans to see him, and for him to get some much-needed experience.

"He didn't get the start, and I think it was crying out for him to come on at half time, and it would've done no harm whatsoever".

I totally agree with McAteer here; just play Sterling already! What is the point in restricting him to ridiculous 15 minute cameo appearances?

Dalglish would argue - as he has already this season - that it's not fair to rush young players, but it's not as if there's a long, draining season ahead; it's two games before the end, and playing a full 90 minutes is not going to ruin Sterling's career development, is it?

I would like to see Sterling start the final two league games of the season; what does the club have to lose?

  1. Lets face it, had Sterling started he would have been our best player, head and shoulders above the rest. Unfortunately i dont think Kenny rates him, whether it be his footballing skills or his skin colour, and it appears that he will not get a fair chance under the 'King.'

If Dalglish stays on as manager (highly, highly unlikely) then i can see Sterling moving on, but fortunately our (non-racist) owners appear to have more sense (they were at a reserves game recently) and are more interested in the young players than Kenny is. For this reason i think they will sack Dalglish and install a manager who isnt afraid to use young players such as Sterling and Suso (both of whom are infinitely more talented than the likes of carroll, downing and adam).

  2. Just for the record. Dalglish only gave Flanagan first team break- because he was forced to .
However, against popular belief- Kelly, Spearing , Shelvey, Pacheco were all given first team opporunities by either Roy or Rafa.

  3. Its not really hard to be more talented than carrol, downing, adam and henderson. One of the biggest travesties in football transfers i have seen. Then to sell Miereles and loan out aqualiani just even more unfathomable.

  4. kenny doesnt like starting people who are under 20 in the first team. he has always thought that they should wait untill they are more developed before placing them in the first team. sterling will get his chance

  5. My biggest worry about Dalglish is the failure to use the obviously talented youth squad we have at our disposal and his insistence on continuing to play players who are, quite honestly, awful such as Downing and Henderson.

  6. KD is still trying to justify his poor purchases with only a handful of games left?! Or could it be he doesn't want to be left with egg on his face if Sterling and Suso were given full games and demonstrated they are much better than Downing, Adam and Henderson?

  7. Agree totally with what Nickm_147 has said, been saying for a long time now that Sterling, Shelvey and Suso are better than Adam, Henderson and Downing and should be given their chance to prove it, those 3 have been given all season and are still gash!!

  8. Totally agree with u, sterling showed more talent in 8 mins against wigan and then was dropped till last nights game. Shocking decision by kenny and just doesn't make sense.

  9. I agree Sterling should be given more minutes in the last couple of games. However, I think it's also a good thing that he hasn't been exposed to much into a team that has had such a losing mentality this season. He should be given more chances to prove himself starting fresh next season. It was a second rate team put on the field on Tuesday that was pretty much destined to lose, isn't it a good thing that Sterling wasn't bunched with the rest of them?

  10. coady is another who should have gotten some more first team experience this season.

  11.  If a young player starts and plays really bad it could seriously knock his confidence, just look at Flanagan, he's a bag of nerves. The last 15 minutes the other team gets tired hence Sterling could play better. Kenny is no idiot.

  12.  I dunno about not rating him but Dalglish has shown himself to be a very conservative manager, not so much in a Hodgson tactical fashion but in his handling of the squad - Carra over Coates for example. He is too cosy with the remnants of the homegrown old guard at the expense of others.

As for the young guys, he is wrong to restrict game time with the league long since dead and buried and I do wonder if the vision Kenny D has is sympathetic with the work being done by Rodolfo Borrell and Jose Segura.

  13. Kenny is best placed to know how to manage Sterling's development. To say Kenny doesn't rate him is ridiculous, but I must admit it is highly frustrating to watch a poor performance when you know the best young talent since Michael Owen is sitting on the bench. The next 12 weeks will shape the future of Liverpool FC for at least the next 3 years. Expect big changes and lets all hope the right choices are made as we simply cannot continue to be inconsistent and mediocre.

Its not just Sterling that has been mis-managed , the way he has played then dropped and played and dropped Carroll defies all attempts at logic  - Go on Kenny , give raheem the last two league games  - it can only be a positive thing and may give the young man the appetite to stay at LFC.

Off topic  - Jaime , I would love to read your views on Gerrards praise and support for Roy Hodgson in todays press conference , probably just me with my tin foil hat on but when he praised Roy for his tactical nous and preparation I detected a slight dig at Kenny  - am I just reading too much into it ?

That '2nd rate' team cost almost £ 100 million to assemble  - the apologists would do well to remember that when they write things like 'dead rubber, leagues gone anyway  - only the 2nd string ' etc

  16. Come on KK get the kids involved, FFS!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I realise that. Just stating by the form of the players that were on the field, not what they are supposed to be "worth". It shouldn't have been regarded as a dead rubber because if they had any pride they should've gone out to win and finish ahead of Everton which won't happen now. The point is it was a team made mostly of underachievers and Sterling shouldn't be grouped in that catergory.

  18. A shameful waste, the lad should have been playing some part at home all season, i have been his biggest fan since the day i first saw him play, i thought he was a certainty to be a great player, i have studdied his play ever since and he is magic, unstoppable due to his cleverness, natural ability, fitness and low centre of gravity.

  19. Was at the game last night and agree the kid could 've been on from the off what a boost for him especially as like the rest of us he watches Downing do zilch in most games and must think if only I could get on there , he was much better in them 15 minutes and caused more threat than Downing did in the 45 he was on , and the " it's not fair on the kid " is just pants . Or is it ? Imagine the players Owen , Rooney , Giggs , Messi , Ronaldo and many many others might have become and the careers they might have had if only there managers had of waited till they were 28 or 29 to to blood them , and if the answer is they were special , well tell this kid you think he's special build his confidence not knock it out of him 28 29 is a joke by the way but you know what I mean

    ReplyDelete
  20. kenny has  lost the plot he dosent want to lose face with the bad buys he has made he sould give the kids a chance look at folwer owen were they not kids.if he dosent get his act togather  he will be on his way out of anfield i think that the owners have already made up there mind and are just waiting till the end of the season.we cant go on like this we are the laughing stock of the of the whole country how many times have we been beaten at anfield all the records we have had are gone but we have to stand strong and we will get through this y.n.w.a

  21. Well said. I read an interview with Michael Owen recently, he has placed the blame on his injury ravaged career on too much too soon. Sterling is a wonderful talent but he is still developing, i.e. his body is still developing. He won't last long if he's getting lumps knocked out of him week in, week out. A bit of patience is in order.

  22. at the beginning of the season my Blue mate said Ross Barkley will be the greatest player since Dixie Dean, however he failed to impress early on and was banished to the reserves and youth team to continue his development. Same with Sterling he needs to be nutured, developed and brought in at the right time. One would hope he will make his breakthrough in the forthcoming preseason as that is the best time for a kid to show his merits and ability to get into the tea. . It is very difficult to bring a kid into a team struggling in the league, a Liverpool team of the past had no problem in blooding the youngsters because of the quality of the players around him but this present lot is not of that level.

    ReplyDelete
  23. it seems the way to get a game for kenny is to go in the papers and praise  him..works for carra ....hes garbage and plays despite not being part of the future of the club...sick of kenny sick of his old guard click..he needs to go after the final.....i want a manager who has no allegiance to any player and picks on merit and tactics....is that to much to ask for on the millions there paid

    ReplyDelete
  24. We have been shocking this season!! If any other manger done what kennys done with the buys and form in the league this season would of gone ages ago! This season could of been so different if another manger had the 100m kenny had to spend! Really do feel sorry for the owners cos they've put a lot of money into the club and it's been wasted big time.

    ReplyDelete
  25. When Sterling came on, he was practically showing the seniors like Downing, how to cross the ball decently. It doesn't matter how we finish the season now looking at the way we played against Fulham. Just start Sterling in the next game.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow that means Sterling has along wait ahead of him at 17. By the time he turns 20, Chamberlaine would already be a 3 year veteran first team for Arsenal no wonder he chose them ahead of us.

    ReplyDelete
  27. All due respect to our boss but KD has to go....his style is old school. Learn from Wenger, Fergie or Pardew, use the youngsters n watch them shine! It cost very little too...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why? He is miles better than any of the wingers in the first team so what's the point in waiting? He clearly shows the ability to play at the highest level already.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I reckon Flanagan's nerves were broken by Dalglish. I mean he was awesome last season when he got regular games. Same with Kelly and Robinson. Then this season they're completely banished to the reserves? That will knock anyone's confidence.

  30. Liverpool are unwatchable at the moment. Suarez's hat-trick was the only good game this season and guess who was playing just behind him? Gerrard! It's not rocket science. Gerrard's best position is just behind the striker and Suarez needs to play up top on his own.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My friend told me that he'd never go to Anfield at the moment because they'd be so boring to watch. And he's right. We can look so fluid and barca like in the midfield at times, but as soon at the ball enters the final third they are clueless! There is no confidence or tactical nous! One of the biggest examples is Downing. He only uses one foot, he rarely beats the player and he never even shows some trickery to beat defenders. He kicks the ball past them and hopes he beats them to the ball. In the Norwich game we had a brilliant goal scoring oppurtunity with downing, suarez and (gerrard I think?) leading an attack down the middle. Downing had the ball on the right and he only needed to simply slide the ball into the box for suarez to tap it in. However he instead decided to cut back in and let that chance go down the drain as Norwich reformed defensive shape. The commentator mentioned how he thought it to be confusing as to why Downing is on the right, and why an international footballer has no confidence in playing a simply cross with his weaker foot. It's just an example of our poor tactics, cluelessness and inconfidence in our side. Wouldn't confident players be able to bury more than half of the shots we have missed this year? I am perplexed as to why Kenny didn't play Sterling. Someone here mentioned maybe its because he doesn't rate him. If Kenny doesn't rate sterling it clearly shows he's past it- against wigan he promised more in 10 minutes than downing has the whole year. Our remaining league games don't mean anything, so there is nothing to lose. Kenny should have rested downing instead and started sterling.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Your freind is a fool then as we not boring to watch, we havent been scoring alot but have been creating plenty of chances and playing some good looking football. Results havent gone our way but to say we are boring is incorrect. Tell your mate to not bother going to Anfield at all, the idea is to support the team if we are winning or not, fair weather fans should move on and find a new club.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have put a £50 bet on with my next door neighbour, who will be the biggest star next season Sterling or Barkley.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sterling, regardless of how old he is, deserves a chance because the others are terrible. None of Downing, Adam, Henderseon et al have earnt a place in the team. They've been woeful and don't deserve as many starts as they get. Sterling should be given a fair crack of the whip because let's face it, he can't do any worse than the donkeys that get in every week.

Look at Wenger at Arsenal. Jack Wilshere was only 18 when he got his Arsenal debut and has grown into their best midfielder. He's also given Oxlade-Chamberlain playing time and he's done well whenever he's been on - for example, when they nearly beat Milan at the Emirates.

Even Fergie has given players like Wellbeck time on the field and they're all developing into good players. If you're good enough, you're old enough

KD needs to come out and give an explanation as to how Downing earns a place in the team despite his shambolic performances throughout the season.

I mean, seriously, what have we got to lose by giving Sterling a couple of starts?

  35. What would you like Kenny to do Andy ? play Flanagan, Kelly, Johnson, Agger, Skirtl, Enrique and Robinson in a 7 1 1 1 formation. At present we definately have to pick and choose Flanos games he is a head strong player and he is at times reckless in his challenges. Give him game time yes but lets continue his education and developement as well.
Regular contributors to this site have demanded game time this season for a lot of the youngsters. Shelvey in particular. Has he made a difference to the team since he has been selected ?
This next bit is really general about this article. McAteer like all people is entitled to his opinion however we should remember that he is not knownfor his clever footballing brain or coaching methods. At Tranmere Rovers John Barnes was Known as Dumb and McAteer as Dumber.

  36. i'm totally agree. look at Sunderland under O'Neill, he isnt afraid to introduce youngster into 1st team. and only this season we heard about McLean

  37. look at arsenal injured list. what happen to wilshere and ramsey? soon it will happen on chamberlain.

    ReplyDelete
  38. so u mean, as long we can score that it would be boring? and we play like barca but cant score and that make it boring to watch?

  39. then what is modern football formation? do you like us to play like chelsea on barcelona game? pack the penalty box with defender and striker and wait for chance to counter them

    ReplyDelete
  41. agree. i think its better for Dalglish to blood some youngsters into First team now. there's only 2 games left now. and surely many fans will be more understand and accept it if kenny start with the youngsters now. take this chance or it will be difficult next season (if we want to set higher)

    ReplyDelete
  42. mayb chamberlaine will serve 2 year in medical room? :) arsenal curse i guess...play young player injured for 1 or more season...come back and cant perform

    ReplyDelete
  43. true. whats the point of continuing to secure signature of young talent if they will not get a chance in the 1st team. are you sign players like suso, sterling, shelvey to win the reserves. thats why players like moses arent joining liverpool

    ReplyDelete
  44. sorry but as much as i cant wait to see him play 90 minutes this is one thing (the only thing) kenny is gettin right .... look what he did for a young lad robbie ... he created god!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Ramsey suffered a broken leg, that's nothing to do with playing too much, he was on the end of a bad tackle. Wilshere played too many games last season and that was wrong. But the point is he grew into a brilliant player with each game he played. At least Wenger saw that he had a good young player and played him. And don't forget, they finished above LFC, so maybe it's not such a bad way to go. Just saying.

    ReplyDelete
  46. They should sack Ken Daglish, Liverpool is becoming a laughing stock.

    ReplyDelete
  47. if only for 2 game...i totally agree with you but play sterling for long term is definitively a no for me. KD need to protect him as he is a potential player for us. You cant overplay a young player too much. once he injured, the confident that he gave will be gone.

i thought kenny already starting to use youngster - kelly, spearing, jonjo, hendo and coates

    ReplyDelete
  48. from my point of view on arsenal is, arsene wenger or alex ferguson has create a system for the player to work on. no matter who left the club or replace by other. most of them play the same style.both of the team has create a rhythm or game flow.

that why KD need more time to create his in liverpool squad.

    ReplyDelete
  49. it is ironic that Englands young players are all injured, is it overplaying or down to training methods, Wilshere going to miss the Euro's, Rodwell probably will miss the Euro's (5 hamstring pulls this season) Walcott is now out, ok he is not a youngster but Bent is out too.

    ReplyDelete
  50. KD is total failure. He should be sacked.  He failed to give our young players more chances. We have quality in reserve but this nuts are pouring money for waste.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Totally, totally agree. He has been trying to justify his purchases all season and it appears he is going to continue to try and justify them right until the very end. Downing, Adam, Henderson and Carroll have scored SEVEN pl goals between them, and have assisted TWELVE between them. What exactly were these useless people bought to the club for? They are all AWFUL defenders so dont help out at the back, yet all four combined have scored less than Cisse has and hes only played 12 games!!!

Cisse also cost £74million less than those four did. That has to be one of the most embarrassing statistics in world sport.

I am certain that if Sterling and Suso had played even half the games these four baboons have they would have outscored and out-assisted all of them combined and then the owners would KNOW he had wasted their money on dross when there were better options already at the club.

Instead Kenny has consistently hidden his incompetences by claiming we have been unlucky in just about every game this season. When it happens on such a regular occurrence it isn't bad luck, its bad habit. And by telling his players that, and telling them to keep on doing what they are doing he has bedded that mentality of being nearly men into them and so the bad habit continues, this will only stop unless Kenny finally sees what he is doing and starts lay in to the under-performers.

Instead he lays into a bunch of players who have never played together, thus, absolutely destroying their confidence. Why does he never do this to HIS buys? They get an easy ride from him and are allowed to be crap!

    ReplyDelete
  52. There isn't one.. but it appears that Chelsea's tactics worked on that occasion. So,if it works, do it!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Kenny D has lost his wits and mind. Thou I hated to say this but he seems to be unfit to be here next season. Totally wasted our resources of young talents.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yunus , i have said before and i say it again, KD has to go , he has no clue as to what management of players is about , we are playing artrocius football , since when has a once famous team like ours given priority to win the tickey cup and the facup and deemed that as success.our priority should be firstly is to win the EPL then the Champions League Cup , the rest of the cups should be bonus.KD has to go , get Jurgen Klopp or Rafa back.

  56. Could you imagine if the likes of Owen, Rooney etc had to wait until they were 20 and only got to play reserve games until then? I don't know if they'd have turned out as well as they did...

    ReplyDelete
  57. Fabregas started young. He looks like he can perform to me! Ever heard of a kid called Wayne Rooney. He was pretty young too and didn't turn out bad. Plus a certain Steven Gerrard!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Plus a certain....almost the entire barca first team!

    ReplyDelete
  59. You HAVE to start these young players. There is a feeling of invincibility that older more 'mature' players don't have and if you nurture that it can give the whole team a boost or a kick up the arse depending on what is needed.

The sad thing is that not playing these guys works the opposite way of what is intended and actually kills their confidence. Just like playing too defensive often makes you concede goals.

    ReplyDelete
  60. You all should stop playing FIFA 12 you muppets u r all wanna reds u all make me sick

    ReplyDelete
  61. What has that got to do with giving young players a chance and the amount of injuries they pick up?

I agree that Wenger and Fergie have blueprints that every team at every level follows and I agree with the need for one at Liverpool.

My issue is whether a Dalglish blueprint would be any good. All season, Liverpool have looked tactically naive and with no strategy of any kind. Are we direct? Are we pass and move? Nobody knows.

Personally, I wouldn't trust the building of a blueprint to Dalglish. He hasn't addressed any problems all season, in terms of personnel or tactics.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Sorry mate we play nothing like Barca. To play like Barca you need to know how to pass the ball properly 3 yards. We are definitely still struggling with this. Our midfield is the problem if you look deeper. Yes the strikers have been awful, but the kind of chances we create are very reminiscent of most of the other middle of the table EPL teams. We have an extreme fascination for crossing the ball from deep-the easiest thing in the world for EPL defenses to deal with, and what they are most used to.

Negative nineties old-fashioned English football. Whichever way you look at it, its embarrassing to be a Liverpool fan right now. And don't get me started on our "youth policy!"

    ReplyDelete
  63. Yeah, but what if we don't want to see his style. I wouldn't invited Tony Pulis to be manager even if someone could guarantee that it would make us win the League (which of course could never happen with such a negative style of play).

Personally don't like KD's signings, any of them except for Bellamy (and maybe Enrique).

I don't like the fact that he continues to try and play under performing players simply because he payed too much for them.

I don't like the way he seems to think that he will ruin a player if he starts them too young, when generally the opposite is more true (especially with attacking/creative type players).

I don't even like the formations he chooses. 4-4-2 with Spearing as one of the two centre mids is never going to work. I know that there are useless players all through that formation, but to get the best out of these average players it is obvious you need to play a 3 man midfield, and play a more compact style of play.

But most of all I don't like the fact that every week that goes by everybody's expectations go down a little more, and we are slowly becoming a mid-table club, while our rivals are getting better and better.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think most people thought the same thing.  I've never seen the point in bringing on a young player for the final 10-15 minutes of a game.  Especially in this case where the personnel changes were so comprehensive it would have made sense to start Sterling, give him an early opportunity to stamp his mark on the game.
Well done the supporters at the game (wasn't there myself) who gave Sterling such great support though.  Hope we get to see more of him next season, starting games and being given real opportunities to show his obvious talent.

    ReplyDelete
  65. if i could play highly rated youngster raheem sterling in all 11 starting positions i absolutely would.  week in week out.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Last point is a good one.  Its outrageous of Kenny to criticise his team for losing 1-0 to Fulham when they were clearly so unprepared.  His admission "I guess I am partly to blame" is so half hearted he might as well not bother with the pretence of accepting responsibility.  Clearly a number of young players, or ordinarily benched players, did a less than fantastic job against pretty decent opposition.  But the supporters remained positive so why couldn't Kenny?

    ReplyDelete
  67. I admit, I was on the fence due to the whole Michael Owen too much too soon thing, and it really was a shame what happened to him, but when you think about it, how many has that really happened to. Fabregas, CRon, Messi, Xavi, Rooney, even less than world class players such as Milner, Andy Johnson have been first team since 16/17.

We tried to buy players with premiership experience(At the time I agreed with this philosophy). Now ironically we aren't giving our homegrown talent premiership experience. Glasg Jonjo is getting a chance but fans need to lay off.

  68. The board keep saying KD has their full backing, which is disturbing. KD has proved himself incompetent in more than one area. 1-he's overseen the most wasteful transfer spend this club has ever had, 2-his paranoid press dealings regarding conspiracies 3-stating that cups are as important as league position, 4-his handling of the suarez affair, 5-his insistence on consistently playing below average players to try to justify his wasteful spending. 6-not giving quality kids a chance 7-making average players worse(unlike rafa who often made average players better). the list goes on.
it disturbs me to think we have another season of this to put up with. the thought of watching adam spraying the ball around(to the opposition) in macedonia makes me want to cry.
if the board keeps kenny on, they really are clueless.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I agree with you here. It does seem that there is no synergy in relationship to the first team and the Academy. It seems to take a yell of frustration from the crowd to get KD to offer nothing more than a token to settle them. We have as you say known the league position is immaterial for a long time and that time has in my opinion wasted.

Sterling is a talent that needs some game time but only some game time. If as a light young man he shows he is okay then play him until he struggles a little. I do agree as a 17year old he is no strong Stevie G. A little and often and slowly eased in. Put him on at the start and you are putting too much pressure on him

  82. Flanagan is schoolboy material and rightfully Kenny banished him. Same applies to Spearing ! We need world class talent coming through the ranks.

  84. Spot on. LFC is a global brand & CL is the ONLY credible measure. The rest (CC/FA/EL) ,let me not say it.

  86. Everyone is a football manager these days aren't they?

It's easy on paper, the playstation or pc.  And who on earth are we to think we know 'better' than KD?

I think we all need to step 'back' and have some 'patience'.  Agree?

  87. It is a sad day for real supporters, when you can read such complete and utter drivel.
When you are 17, your body is still growing, and therefore much more in danger of being injured. What good will it do Liverpool, or Raheem, to play him the 2 last games of the season? Being kicked around the park by Terry is hardly a fortunate learningcurve.
You dont drop your son in the Mersey, and tell him to swim... or sink.
Give him the preseason, match him a half each game, and take it from there. He cant save Liverpools season, but Liverpool can sure ruin his career, if KK listen to this pack of "experts". Thank you and merry christmas.
