Ex-LFC manager slams 'pretty average' Luis Suarez. Harsh or fair...?

After a very eventful year, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez ended the 2011-12 season with just eleven league goals, a disappointing return given his undoubted talent. Along with Andy Carroll, the Uruguayan's lack of goals has directly contributed to the club's poor showing in the Premier League, and former Liverpool manager Roy Evans believes that it's imperative that Suarez is put under pressure next season by another top striker challenging for a place in the team.

Speaking to LFC TV, a clearly frustrated Evans bemoaned Liverpool's profligacy in front of goal, and laid the bulk of the blame at the feet of Suarez. He said:

"You can give me all the stats in the world about hitting the woodwork, but striking is part of the game, and you've got to score goals. Suarez gets into positions and creates chances for himself, but unfortunately, his ratio for finishing has been pretty average. It's not good enough for Liverpool Football Club".

With a conversion rate of just 10%, I don't think anyone can argue with that: Suarez's finishing has been average, and Evans believes that the Uruguayan is not being put under enough pressure within the squad:

"When you're not under pressure from an out and out striker on the bench, you feel like our place is always there. There's nothing better than having competition in all positions".

I totally agree with this. Suarez doesn't really have any competition for his place in the team. Basically, if he's fit, he plays, irrespective of performance level.

This needs to change, and hopefully in the summer, Liverpool will sign another top class goalscorer; a first-teamer who will make Suarez and Carroll feel uneasy about their first team places, and force them to work harder to stay in the team.

  1. You know Jaimie, you should be banned ... you deliberately take everything out of context and never support any of our incumbent managers.

Your disrespect to Kenny Dalglish is a disgrace and I don't believe you could have attended any games this last season.

We all accept the results haven't been good enough, but those of us who actually watch the games can see we're due a bit of luck as we've played more cracking stuff in one season than we have in the 20 that preceded it.

I agree that what's needed is some continuity rather than changing manager yet again.  We've got the right guy in ... now we need a bit of luck and for the younger players to mature again.

I'm sure we'll have seen that you were one of Lucas's fiercest critics not so long ago - but being fickle you'll now be his champion no doubt.

Your website is deliberately misleading - which of course gets you tons of traffic for which you get paid rather well.  No problem in that and fair play to you.  But a Liverpool fan you are most definitely NOT.

  2. I agree with Evans. Credit to Suarez for his dribbling and good movement to find those positions but at the end of the day, he has to put those chances away he has had. He has missed far too many for someone that is put up on a untouchable pedestal.

  3. so where in the statement by Roy Evans has he SLAMMED Luis Suarez ?

    ReplyDelete
  4. As i said before , we already have the players to offer competition - we blought them last year ! We need starting XI quality players.
Unfortunately if KD is still in charge , he will only sign young or second grade striker who will be happy to be on the bench offering little competition to either Suarez or Carrol.

  5. Well why don't ya just MARRY him?!

  6. I'd hardly describe Evans' comments using the word "slams". I suppose you have to sensationalise things though. Par for the course.

    ReplyDelete
  7. He slammed his lack of goals. Calling someone's goal return 'pretty average' constitutes being slammed IMO. Also, if you watched the interview, you would see how frustrated he was.

If you have nothing better to do than snipe then please go elsewhere. Any further posts along the same lines will be deleted.

  8. The problem is that Suarez has to make his own chances.  By the time he's taken the ball past a couple of players, when he gets a chance to shoot he's not always balanced enough to get a good shot away.

See his goals against Norwich and Everton in the FA Cup, when in a one on one situation he's deadly when he hasn't h ad to do all the hard work before.  Torres was lethal cos of Gerrard.  Suarez needs to become lethal cos of someone else

  9. I agree that purchase of top class goalscorer would
(probably) put some pressure on Suarez and Carroll, but it can bee achieved
with man management also. While he wear Liverpool
jersey, Torres was not under any pressure, jet he score goals regularly.
Creative midfielder and winger should be priority

  10. Its all on Suarez for why he misses the chances he has. Its his composure, his feet, etc. To blame someone else for his shooting is just odd.

    ReplyDelete
  11. This is an unfair criticism labelled in the direction of Suarez considering how very poor Liverpool had been last season. Downing, Carroll, Adam, and Henderson have been very average to poor all last season. They are all Kenny Dalglish's signings.

  12. Slam? Are you falling into the trap of the gutter press and sensationalising?

  13. I make Evans right.  His ratio for finishing is pretty average when you look at statistics!  But he is hardly slamming him as you state.  Your headline is misleading. Despite the lack of goals I am fully behind Suarez and the team for that matter.  theres nothing like creating a bit of negativity Mr Kanwar!

Evans is stating the obvious nothing more, nothing less.  And in turn you are acting like a Mark Lawrenson impersonator by stating the obvious.

I do not beleive we need a huge influx of players, a top class striker would be nice but will it happen? - we need the current squad to gel and improve.  if this team is allowed to do that and be given time to improve then we will see great things happening.  i think a lot of fans are missing the point, this is a young team in transition but most fans think its FIFA 12 or Issy Pro - every pass must be perfect.....every shot a goal.....

on another point - I hope Dalglish is given time - lets not jump on band wagons and act like others - Lets reassess in 2 or 3 seasons time not straight away.

get off your soap box and try and comment on positives - no point in stating the obvious!

I'm off my soap box but let me say this.  "a fan is a supporter, not a critique" - lets get behind the manager and the team and stop looking for cracks or negative points!!!

  17. So. Here we go again. Let's slate and blame the best player we've got. Did he put any blame on the crap players he's playin with. One thing for sue and that's 100% that if we put all KD signings up for sale most of the European clubs will come in for Suarez.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Richardmcgill2410:43 am, May 16, 2012

Suarez has been shit this season imo. He gets past people well but runs into blind alleys far to often. As nor blaming midfielders for his shot to goal ratio that's just ridiculous . Our mid whether you like them or not have created more chances than nearly every team in the prem.the job of a forward is to score goals he has not done his job just like Carroll he has failed this season. Buy a forward? No buy 2 forwards and lets surprise the doubters and go for everything next season.oh and the best player we have got on this season is Skrtel who actually has done his job unlike Suarez

    ReplyDelete
  19. To be fair, Evans did slate some of KD's other signings in a different part of the interview, he just didn't name them specifically.

    ReplyDelete
  20. He's got great feet, great balance, ball control and anticipates well but his finishing is nowhere near as good as it should be. The goals are the same size for every team and the posts are the same thickness for everyone but Aguero, Van Persie etc hit the back of the net rather than the woodwork. The amount of chances he misses is worrying. It's like Andy Cole was when he first joined United, with the difference being that United had other strikers to make up for it

    ReplyDelete
  21. Still of the opinion that if Suarez supported by better midfield and partnering strikers a'la Norwich consistently, he will deliver - if not you are asking one man alone to do everything. Those saying, if he is shooting and misses he only has himself to blame... that is an obtuse position to take.
If you must make your own runs, dribble, push, weave, shove, nutmeg and stumble into a space, see the smallest of opennings and you take what you can muster, by that point your chances have watered down to zilch... but he has NO choice but to do that at the moment. Most of the time you see LFC crossing the ball to noone, not giving him the through balls he thrives on. LFC also have an unhealthy obsession for playing back ALL the time, very frustrating. So, yes, he has to try and do it all himself.
    -
Only when you see other team-mates working the one-twos running into the box with him we see real results, more of that and things change. Only Maxi seems to understand this mindset and occasionally Gerard.
Meanwhile, crosses and more crosses, crappy long balls, hence guaranteed loss of posession each and evey time for an off chance of a header... rubbish strategy imo.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well I guess your opinion is a media attention seeking headline .
There is no way that he has slammed Suarez... Fact.
    Roy Evans isn't like that...Fact.
One of the reasons he didn't succeed at LFC as a manager is because he wasn't hard enough on the players.
What he said in the interview was called a " Constructive Comment" nothing more and nothing less.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Have took a screen shot of your comment to me ... And posted it on Twitter .. I havd over 800 LFC fans on my account . Your an attention seeking knob who will twist the words of others . Shame on you .

  24. how can he score wen we no winger to give the balls for him to score why is he blamin saurez were the likes of downing did nothing the whole season.hw cn he score wout a gud striking partner and midfield cut the guy some slack

  26. Has anyone got stats on other strikers and the ratio they get, particulary 3 strikers who came in Jan and scored loads, Cisse, Jelavic and Pobgrynak
(Fulham guy pardon the spelling) so we have something to compare Suarez with.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Cisse:13 goals and 1 assist since January
Jelavic: 11 goals and 3 assists since January
    Pogrebnyak: 6 goals since January
Yakubu: 18 goals and 2 assists
Demspey: 23 goals and 6 assists

    And the list goes on...

  28. Luis Suarez

17 goals and 7 assists in his first full season in English football. This despite playing in a team of donkeys, a poor manager having a 9 game ban. Fernando Torres played in an excellent Liverpool team with an excellent manager and only scored the amount of goals in the 2008-09 season.

Oh and something you seem to not understand. LUIS SUAREZ IS NOT A NUMBER 9. HE NEVER WAS AND NEVER WILL BE. Over and over again you say "Suarez was brought in to score goals", "he's a striker". This is wrong. He was brought in to partner Torres not replace him. And at Ajax he never played as a number 9, he played either left or right of a front 3. His job was not and is not scoring goals. That would be Andy Carroll's job since he is the number 9.

When will you guys understand that our midfield is 5hit and gives no support to the forward ?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Suarez has to create and score and mostly running the midfield individually with his talented skill and no matter how good you are you''ll always need someone to compliment or helping you,so far i don't see any of kenny's summer signing or liverpool midfields are capable of doing that,in fact our midfield is like non existance, henderson, downing, adam carroll and jonjo do you see any creative in them??? and i don't blame jonjo cause he's only starting to play a few first choice starting, this is the most awful midfield i've ever seen in liverpool team. No matter which team kenny in charge of he is always spending money on useless or average players, the only thing he is good at is men management. For me suarez is doing very good in midfield by himself, don't expect miracle and try to talk senses.

  31. It is disgraceful the lack of respect being shown to Mr Daglish by the owners and it is not going down well at all with real fans also only an idiot would criticise Saurez, as for Mr Evans He needed only to drop a miste ridden keeper to win the league, anyone could see it, He never dropped him and it cost us the points that would have won the league, so shut up Roy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am pissed off most not signing Jelavic, and listening to the Evertonians in work drooling over him because KD a said he isnt any better than what we have when he could of signed him.
Am told by Rangers fans he was something else, maybe the price tag of only 6m put KD off, if Rangers wanted 20m he would of gone for him.
There is one lad in the lower divisions who has ability beyond anyone else down there ie Jordan Rhodes, 40 goals, he has pace and movement, the pundits all say he will make it, for 2 or 3m he would add depth to the squad which is not there and could be a hidden gem.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You talk about 'lack of respect' then tell Evans to 'shut up'?! Evans is perfectly entitled to his opinion, and having spent 33 years at LFC, and worked under Shanks, Paisley et al, he probably has more right to voice his view than even Dalglish.

Why is it a 'disgraceful lack of respect/ being shown to Dalglish by the owners?! What about the disgraceful lack of respect show by Dalglish all season to the press?

And pray tell, what exactly is a 'real fan'?

You going to blame the manufacturer of his boots? And compare it to using a good quality knife instead of a average run-of-the-mill home one? Pffft, only one person talking out of his arse and that is you, with your laughable inept analogy.

  39. Out of curiousity, is their a definitive statement by the club that Suarez was bought to play alongside Torres or is that just speculation and instead, just planning for the future without Torres?

  40. Jamie, The press dont deserve respect see Leveson inquiry. There is obviously an underlying problem with sky, His Daughter Kerry worked for them (and you did i think) did something happen that upset Him ?.
Perhaps there are other things but that would mean the  "THE PRESS" actually researching facts, not lazy gossip invention and hearsy.

  42. Suarez primarily is not striker, hes more of a creater, but due to the King wasting all FSGs money on garbage he has to try to adapt, hes now has to create and score himself as he rightly has no confidence in the players the King bought.Suarez is basically a one man team now,the sooner the King gets the message hes not wanted as manager anymore the sooner we can move on.The King has ran to Carra and Gerrard for support to put pressure on them fantastic yanks, yet im thinking i would rather have Rafa and all 3 of Mr LFC go,go on all 3 of you get lost.We want Rafa back.

    ReplyDelete
  43.  Speculation like Kenny signed Carroll (almost took for granted) yet he was the caretaker manager. It's all speculation, especially on this site :o]

    ReplyDelete
  44. For a 'creater', he has more goals than assists in his league career in Europe so far (yes, assists aren't the be all and end all but one would think he would have a lot more assists, even before joining Liverpool, for a so-called creater striker). Though that doesn't necessarily make him a typical no.9 striker, just maybe someone that likes to score, when his starting position is deeper/wider (Like for Ajax, although he has often played as the main striker for Uruguay).

  50. If in relation to me: Not with the whole post, no but a bit here and there, I guess. I don't see him as a creater, just see him as a forward who likes to/can attack/run at from deeper/wider positions a la Villa. He is a goalscorer, just not a orthodox one (e.g. not like Hernandez, Bent, etc)

  53. Suarez said it in an interview. Also, we had been in negotiations with Ajax/Suarez for weeks before we signed him. And Torres to Chelsea only happened right at the end of the transfer window. So Liverpool were signing Suarez while still under the impression that Torres was staying as there had been no word form his camp about leaving. That came later, far too late.

Tsk, tsk jaime  - dont you understand that if it wasnt for a corrupt FA , Fergie , the freemasons and the alien agenda that Suarez would have been nailed on for the ballon d'or as well as this season EPL golden boot ?

he's our only real world class player - dont you know ?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Evans is right, Suarez has not been good enough in front of goal, im 100% certain that he is better than what he's shown this season, for sure he isn't the same player that he was last season when he seemed to be a lot more on target with his finishing....

Competition for places is a must, but i don't think thats the issue tbh, for me there is a question over his commitment to the cause this season.....i don't buy the argument that its the team etc, he's had plenty of service and messed up plenty of good opportunities which even a championship player might have put away....

Not convinced by Suarez's "performances" this season at all, think there are issue's as to why he has underperformed.......a little like Reina in fact....perhaps they have become good mates?

Basically, i think we need to sort out these player issue's BEFORE we sort out our managerial one.....

Could be wrong about this but i suspect that the Club is being held to ransom by certain players at the Club who seem to be deciding who they will play for and who THEY won't....

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if rafa were to come back for instance that Reina Suarez and Enrique would up their form almost immediately......and then we will all be told how it is down to the genius of said manager witha few of HIS additions....

VERY suspect if you ask me....

One thing is certain, Suarez has not been good enough for us this season.

  57. I don't know if you have ever played but when the moral in a team is down than all players are effected by it the truth of the matter is Evans is full of shit because if we had someone who could keep up with Suarez, his playing ability and his mind for the game then he would be more confident about where they are at. Do not be fooled what happened with Torres can happen again these players want to believe but when you put shit beside them on the park after a while everything just smells like shit. There are times when even the greatest could not hit the side of a barn, Suarez is the best thing LFC has and find someone who can play at his level (whether in mid or up front ) and you will see the goals flow.

    ReplyDelete
  58. No, he's a Liverpool fan. Bringing Rafa back just happens to be in Liverpool's best interests.

Lets face it. We were shit before Rafa. And we are shit after Rafa. But during Rafa, we got to to 2 Champions League finals winning 1, had our highest Premier League points total TWICE and finished runners up with a points total that would be enough to win it in most years. Not to mention beating Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Milan and Inter in that period and signing some of the best players in Europe with a relatively tiny transfer budget.

    ReplyDelete
  59. why hasnt anyone considered selling suarez? depending on how much we can get for him- say 45m or so i wouldnt be overly sad to see him go. 45m plus our transfer budget for the summer could bag us gaston ramirez, the successor to suarez, as well as falcao or higuain-both goal poachers. problem solved- we win the league, the european cup the domestic trophies and soundly thrash man utd a coupla times for good measure.

  60. Source please, for the Suarez interview, thank you, appreciated.

For the rest of your post, doesn't prove conclusively/definitively that Suarez was meant to be signed to play alongside Torres. Torres may have made his wishes to leave earlier in the season and the club may have said 'we will sell you in the winter/summer transfer window' and 'we haven't got sorted out a replacement yet', etc. Its all ifs, buts, maybes and guesstimations, in relation to whether Suarez was bought in mind to play alongside Torres.

Until it is confirmed by the club, it is just guesttimations on your behalf, so far, in my view.

There was players putting pressure on all the other shit players your mate bought but did that have any effect on Hendo, Downing, Adam, Carrolls performance no KK your mate just kept on playing them. evans kept us in the top four. and if you had done your homework you will know that the club would not give him the money to bring in done deals ! agreed deals with a marseille player for 3 mill yes zidane and they would not back him to purchase deschamps and thuram. if they had of done this we would not be talking about suarez or carroll as they would of been far to low a level of player for us.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yea except Rafa was successful in Spain and England. And he had success in the Champions League, something Dalglish never achieved at any of the clubs he managed. Oh and Rafa was 2 years, Dalglish was 20 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Don't know the source, I remember reading it. But let's just say it didn't exist. Why would Liverpool scramble to pay £35million for Carroll on the last day of the window if they knew in advance that Torres was going as per your theory? If Suarez was replacing Torres why was Carroll even bought?

Remember, Torres only handed in a transfer request 2 days before the window shut. No one knew he was leaving. Suarez was coming in to play alongside him.

    ReplyDelete
  71. 2 years, let alone 20 years, is a long time in football. Many things with the club have changed since he has left and the gap between the other clubs ahead of us has gotten bigger. Whether the new signings that are now at the club are tactically suitable for Rafa is questionable and is a issue, as I don't see the club willing to cut their losses so soon and make a considerable loss as well as fund considerably for Rafa to bring his type of players. So it isn't necessarily in the best interests of the CURRENT Liverpool to bring back Rafa.

I don't call one season of being genuine title challengers as being a success 'in...England'

    ReplyDelete
  72. Its funny...Carroll used in the same sentence as Suarez. One wanted by Real/Juve/Barca the other dont think Panatinaikos wants him.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Winning the Champions League doesn't make you a success? Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Evans is not good enough to clean Suarez boots what a joke. He has been our best player all season and has had to endure some life changing events, and for Evans to go after his goal performance is a disgrace, he scored more than Hendo, Adam and Downing put together who are you kidding, give him someone who is at his level of the game and sit back and watch the ride because at the moment our midfield and  the other strikers can not keep up with him, you all want the lfc way pass and move football but yet there is no one that can keep up with him in that aspect.

    ReplyDelete
  75. So, Evans - who worked alongside Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley; coached Dalglish, Souness, Hansen et al; made stars out of Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman, and brought Michael Owen into the first team, is not fit to 'clean Suarez's boots'?

    Right, I understand now.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Just because he handed in a transfer request, doesn't mean the club didn't know he wanted to leave, informally, beforehand. A transfer request is a formal step (he could have let them known informally well before). That doesn't mean anything conclusively in relation to when exactly Torres made it known to the club that he wanted to leave.

You have given nothing but speculation, I'm afraid. Just I like have with my quick theory on Torres-Suarez.

Until the club confirms that Suarez was bought to play alongside Torres, it is just speculation. I'll leave it there as, with all due respect, you haven't come up with anything definitive, just a bunch of numbers you are trying to add up to your get your answer. You don't know 'for sure' Suarez was bought to play alongside Torres in the long term. Cheerio.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I am talking about success 'in...England' as that is what you said, I took what you said, conveniently i admit, literally. Champions League is a European competition. Not a domestic competition, ergo, not 'in....England'.

  78. Goddamn, who's next on the rant book? Suarez can't do everything geez

  79. The only thing I see is... despite true Liverpool fans supporters.. Then the rest of England, yahoo and all media, others clubs.. Fergie and keep adding names if u want.. Have been a disgrace, and tried to make Luis Suarez's life a nightmare.. They are continuously looking for something to talk sht about Suarez.. Imo, Suarez did a lot more than everybody thought he was going to do. In like 2 games.. he became from the guy only known by a " hand"to one of the best epl players, and now everybody have been deceit for his under performance. Honestly, all LFC was sad cuz Torres left and he had no replacement, then Suarez showed his class,  they quickly forgot about Torres, and now, almost all of the LFC, expected him to be the best.. something, that before hand... wasn't meant to be.

  80. Are you forgetting the goals he directly was responsible for like the one that Essien put in his own goal not to mention the fact he was out for 8 weeks mate yes i will excuse him until he has the right players around him and he settles in England properly, there are a lot of people willing to put Hendo failure down to time and Carroll but yet Suarez has to score 30 goals in hi first full season.

  81. Yes it was said by KK himself because he told the press i did not want to replace Torres, Suarez was going to partner him, that were KK's intentions, which would have been fantastic.

  82. Well said totally agree with you

  84. Hit it in the head, Jaimie! The problem is not the hole in midfield, it's not the lack of results from his more expensive co-striker, it's not the lack of talent on the park as a whole or the non existence of analytical, tactical thinking from the manager. The problem is Suarez. Take him off and then Liverpool will no longer be mediocre. Brilliant!

  85. There you go jaimie, it seems that your dream is about to be realised. Suarez was interviewed by Marca and said that he dreams to play in Spain in future with Xabi and Messi. See: http://www.marca.com/2012/05/16/futbol/futbol_internacional/resto_de_america/1337182424.html

I guees, he will have to go to a second best team.

  86. Totally agree, in fact i can't remember many occasions where he has created anything for another teammate. His play is a bit like his character, mainly for himself!

  87. Since when has telling the truth been silly games? And who is everyone?

    ReplyDelete
  88. So, does that prove that the club bought him to play alongside Torres or that they did not tell him that Torres was leaving and did not know that they were signing Suarez when Torres started to get cold feet? If i remember rightly, after Torres' transfer request, the bid for Suarez increased by about 8 or 9 million.

  89. ok, in that case, i have it on good authority that Suarez has asked to leave the club and is changing his name to Gregorsz Traitorelli for the benefit of our supporters. No source, no back up, just a load of hot air to win a debate. Glad you believe me. Thanks.

  90. Too right. And this idea that people can say things like 'FACT' and then think that it somehow makes them sound right.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Why did Liverpool increase the Suarez offer once Chelsea came in with the 50 million bid, then? Up until then, the offers we were putting in were derisory for a player who now is the club's messiah, now that Kenny has gone.

Anyway, are you the judge of who the genuine supporters are?

  92. By the start of the 2013-14 season, Suarez will be public enemy number one as far as Liverpool supporters are concerned. I give him one more season at most. That's what makes it amusing watching everyone worshipping him now. When he does let us down again/decide he likes Spain more/just decide that our team is not good enough, he will be on his way and the 'love' that the supporters showed for Torres and show for him now will soon transfer to something a bit more recogniseable from the terraces. He should hope his team never has to come to Anfield to play.

  93. Well, our club did not earn much this season.

  94. Talk about living in the past? And you are a Kenny loyalist? Not that i want Rafa back either.
