Like so many other top players in the Premier League, Didier Drogba is a shameless diver, and against Barcelona the other night, the Ivory Coast International disgraced himself yet again with a sickening display of sustained cheating. Drogba is by no means the worst diver in the Premier League; that honour belongs to Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, who, during the game, had the chutzpah to criticise the Chelsea striker for...diving. Talk about hypocrisy!
After one of Drogba's many dives against Barcelona, Rooney tweeted::
"Drogba. Your a good player but pls get up".
Given the fact Rooney is one of the Premier League's most prolific cheats, he is the last person who should be passing judgment on other divers.
In 2006, Rooney laughably stated the following:
"I'd never dive. I’d like to think of myself as an honest player. That’s the way I play. I don’t like diving, football doesn’t need it.”
Then, after he dived to win a penalty against Arsenal in September 2009, Rooney made the following claims:
"Everyone who watches me play knows I am an honest player. I play the game as honestly as I can".
What a load of BS. The following evidence contradicts his claims:
Exhibit A: Dive v Blackburn (2008)
Exhibit B: Dive v Spurs (2008) Rooney was booked for this one:
Exhibit C: Dive v Arsenal (2004)
Exhibit D: Dive v Arsenal (2009)
Exhibit E: Dive v Chelsea (2008)
Exhibit F: Dive v Slovenia (2009)
Exhibit G: Dive vs. Rangers
Exhibit H: Dive vs. Aston Villa (2009)
Exhibit I: Dive vs. Arsenal
I would include Rooney's infamous dive against Villareal in this series but, alas, there is no video footage of it anywhere. The Villareal incident proved once again that Rooney is not only a cheat, but a self-confessed cheat. After the game, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Rooney had actually apologised for the dive:
"He apologised to me and said he didn't mean to do that. I think he's been watching Robert Pires too much. At least he apologised to their players. You'd never see Pires do that."
Players like Rooney and Drogba are the living embodiment of everything that is rotten and corrupted in modern football, and I will take any opportunity I can (no matter how tenuous) to highlight their cheating.

Any player could have said what Rooney said about Drogba and you could have found video evidence of that player diving. It's a part of the game now and unless clubs start punishing players or authorities such as the Premier League, FA, UEFA or FIFA do something about it, it is here to stay. Sadly, clubs won't punish players for diving because, simply put, there is too much money in football for clubs to do something about it because a dive can mean the difference between winning and losing. Also, if a club fines a player for diving, that player will most likely throw toys out the pram and you'll have people like Gordon taylor claiming an infringement on there human rights. As for authorities, they are so out of step with what football really needs, they won't do anything because they are inept and haven't got the guts to make football better and to serve the fans
ReplyDeleteGlass houses..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVb2gbMtN3I
ReplyDeleteYes I admit United players dive, and I hate it.
ReplyDeleteI envy your club for the fact that you don't have any cheaters in your team. You are an example for everybody to follow.
Refreshing to hear a fan say there team has players who dive. Every club has players who dive and have the potential to dive. Some people are deluded and can't see past blind loyalties I am afraid
ReplyDeleteRooney didn't "die" on pitch like Drogba in any of these videos which I believe he was pointing at with his tweet.
ReplyDeleteidiots
ReplyDeleteLiverpool is such a perfect club, as some users have pointed out. I admire that fact and that all players at your club (including your manager "King" (?) Kenny) are perfect. Ps. Rooney wasn't talking about Drogba's diving, he was talking about Drogba going down easily to break up Barca's link up play and stall time. (THIS IS FACT)
ReplyDeleterooney is jealous of Didier,..drogba is playing in the CL and rooney aint,..hmm who wouldnt be jealous?..drogba has played in very many countries and rooney can only survive in english prem...we are the best team in england at the mo!..comming from a chelsea fan.
ReplyDeleteHipocrisy is normal at that club. Biggest hypocrit at that club is their manager. He accused Torres while playing at Liverpool and not long ago Suarez when he said Suarez dives all over the place. Rooney will never b punished cos he's English. When foreign ones dive is shown on Sky tv non stop till u get f****** bored of it. When the English players dive u hardly see it and even than foreign players get blamed for bringing diving to PL.
ReplyDeleteLOL.. the sarcasm is lost on some... doh...
ReplyDeleteWhy is this even on here? i thought this was a Liverpool site? I couldnt give a crap what Rooney has said about another player diving. The majority of players do it!
ReplyDeleteSteven Gerrard dives sometimes.
ReplyDeleteGerard end of
ReplyDeleteSarcastic on not, he showed more honesty than some Liverpool fans on here. United players dive, chelsea players dive and yes, Liverpool players dive. It's a fact. So instead of sniping and insinuating that I am stupid, grow up and get real
ReplyDeleteType Steven Gerrard dive in to YouTube and you will see that Rooney is not the only hypocrite, I am sure there are plenty of diving videos for Suarez, and other LFC players, past and present.
ReplyDeleteArticles based on nothing apart from highlighting what a rival player does or does not do are no way near as interesting or useful as an article based on our own team. Especially when we are guilty for the offense in question ourselves. Stop being another bitter Liverpool fan and concentrate your energy on highlighting the positive aspects of the club you apparently love.
Sometimes we are just as bad as the rest, our club is not perfect and probably never will be, and you will only fool a fool with an article like this.
Regards
Dave.
this is on here to show the hypocrisy of a player not only diving himself but then going on and critisising others for it
ReplyDeleteAgree. Look what the media did against that poor African guy Ashley Young.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Just like the media did against the kid from Brazil, Ashley Young.
ReplyDeleteHypocrisy was personified in the Suarez race row with the false allegations made by LFC and the constant lying from members of LFC.
ReplyDeleteTechnically everyone's a hypocrite, ie Hillsboro n Heysel.
4 words.
ReplyDeleteLuis Suarez, Steven gerrard.
We're Ronaldo's dives highlighted more than Rooney's. I think they were.
ReplyDeleteChelsea aren't even the best team in London, Arsenal will show that tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteYes rooney is a cheat but the exact same could be said michael owen - then he won that 'penalty' against argentina & another in the prem shortly after.
ReplyDeleteThe prem has had some awful cheats in robben, ronaldo, rooney, young etc etc etc etc even our very own stevie g isnt a saint & more recently carroll & suarez (again & again) EVERY team has someone who goes down too easy but NO-ONE comes close to the extraordinary continuous examples of cheating we see from drogba - it honestly makes me feel physically sick & ashamed for him!! To see a huge power house like drogba going down like a cheap hooker whos been punched in the gut is just so damn pathetic.
Jaimie please, if you want to do something useful - start up a petition to FA, UEFA or FIFA or whoever the hell ever to ban & fine the hell out of these cheating shites who are destroying 'the beautiful game'.
Thanks for listening!!
Rooney and Young are the two worst divers.
ReplyDelete1) Rooney
2) Young
3) Bale
4) Drogba
I only seen once all year Suarez looking for a penalty.
Gerrard maybe in his younger days, but he got some sense into himself now.
sorry mate but the manc was not being sarcastic he was taking the piss you are stupid we are grown up and real
ReplyDeleteI really wish that there was some action taken against diving, at all levels and of all players of all clubs, because it just spoils the game. It ruins results and leaves me cringing with embarrassment when any of my favoured teams are involved in it.
ReplyDeleteIt the games authorities would just retrospectively punish it like they so with fouls (or are supposed to anyway) it could be wiped out, one match ban the first time, two the second and so on, it wouldn't take long for managers to make their players pack it in.
Always funny hearing/reading the likes of Rooney and Gerrard moaning about other players' antics.
ReplyDeleteThe CL games during the week were full of theatrical bits. Really disappointing to see that but seems par for course on that stage.
Suarez is the worse diver/theatrical player in the league, along with Ashley Young.
Drogba was prolific initially with the theatrics, then went quiet a little when the diving spotlight was on him but now it seems to be 'on the up' again.
Rooney and Gerrard don't dive as much, compared to the former players but because they preach against theatrics, it makes them look just as bad, if not worse.
Suarez is up there with the worse, i.e. Ashley Young, in this league.
ReplyDeleteThats because Ronaldo dived a lot more than Rooney and anyone else in the league.
ReplyDeleteYep, Drogba betters Rooney by ONE, when it comes to playing in different top tier leagues...
ReplyDeleteredredman - Stop belittling other posters please. Any further posts like this will be deleted.
ReplyDeleteyou have no idea what rooney was pointing to... rooney is a wanker, hypocritical one at that... cheats on his woman and on the pitch
ReplyDeleteWouldn't say Liverpool is a perfect club. All clubs have players who dives at some point in time. Its just that some players does it more often than others. But Drogba is a die hard "easy to fall player" and worst of all, he fakes the severity of his fall. Officials should punish players like these.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, i think Rooney was saying Drogba goes down easily. Notice that Drogba does it all the time at every opportunity especially when the opposing team is building up for an offensive. He is a good players and he does not have to resort to these sort of acts.
Exactly - Rooney was diving to win penalties. Drogba was feigning injury to break up Barca's rhythm - he wasn't calling for anyone to get carded, and he never dived inside the area. One might say that Rooney's dives were thus more egregious.
ReplyDeleteThe point wasn't that Rooney's a dirty cheat (he's no worse than a lot of others) - it's that he's a giant hypocrite for trying to call out Drogba. I'll give credit to players who criticize opponents for diving once they start going after their own teammates.
ReplyDeleteGood job by rooney and fergie. Dives for penalty and blame foreigners like pires. Well done!
ReplyDeleteOh Shut Up.... As If SUAREZ Is just too innocent... If you talk about Diving Then PLEASE DONT FORGET TO ADD SUAREZ"s NAME.. LIVERPOO CUNT BLOODY
ReplyDeleteThat's not true! Suarez gets booted all over the park, no matter who he plays against.
ReplyDeleteHis style of play, however, does leave him open to be fouled but he is getting fouled. Kinda like taking one for the team, maybe that's cheating too???
(rubs his eyes)....Are you sure?
ReplyDeleteSomeone mentioned on here that Suarez reminded them of Diouf in terms of attitude. Both are ticking timebombs. We are yet to see Suarez's nuclear capabilities....but no doubt....it's coming.
The British and their selective memories! Love it.
ReplyDeleteI hate twitter by the way and those who use it....LIVE YOUR LIVES!! lol
The "theatrics" from Drogba the other night does raise an interesting point (in my mind anyway!)
ReplyDeleteIt was obvious Drogba was trying to disrupt the fluidity of the game, and consequently any rhythm Barca could generate in their play. The other day we had a debate on "cheating", whereby JK said that he would "sack" Suarez for admitting that if the need arose he would handle the ball on the line [v Everton, which would effectively have ruled him out of an FA Cup Final]. On the Wednesday we see Drogba 'simulating' fouls all game, but then popping up with a goal, and instant hero-status (amongst the Chavs anyway). The antithesis of Drogba's performance was Messi, who could have gone down in the box twice, but because he has so much faith in his ability to score goals resisted the temptation. Ultimately, because of Messi's honesty, (and horrific misses by Fabregas and Busquets) Barca lost the game.I already know the answer from JK, but imagine IF Barca did somehow bollocks the 2ND leg up and Chelsea go through. Will their supporters be thinking, "Messi should have gone down" ? Because ultimately, his lack of "professionalism" could cost his team a place in a European Cup Final. So would you want to be in the Final, or sit at home thinking, "Oh well, at least our player was honest"?Original hinted that Drogba toned down his theatrics, for a while at least. I think that was mainly because he had faith in his own ability to score, whereas now age is catching up on him so he is having to adopt other 'tactics' to get an advantage. The stupid thing is, he doesn't need to do it, as anyone who saw his goal in the semi against Spurs will testify. Even my Mom said, "What an arsehole".......
Rooney slams Drogba for diving (!) Does it get any funnier than that...?
ReplyDeleteYes it does, Liverpools season is twice as funny.
Oh and ps.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVb2gbMtN3I&feature=youtube_gdata_player
hes been sarcastic,you plum!!!!
ReplyDeletePerhaps you can point me in the direction of comments made by Suarez or Gerrard about Drogba diving. It is about HYPOCRISY or did you completely miss the point. Why do people like you always turn into cheap versions of Vicky Pollard ( Little Britain )?Ah yes, but, no, but. If and when Steven and Luis come out publicly and criticise Drogba then, and only then, will they be guilty of hypocrisy. Did Wayne criticise Splashly Young. Of course not, nor would I have expected him to. All the more reason for keeping quiet about Didier.
ReplyDeleteI heard a Liverpool fan come out with a great comment about Drogba on the radio. He queried what might happen if he really did go down with a serious injury and the ref chose to ignore him? In a worst case scenario he could suffer the same fate as Muamba. Before people dismiss that possibility, let's not forget that the same thing happened a few weeks later with utterly tragic consequences.
Jaimie, I've given you some stick recently over your 'negative' approach, but overall you are doing a great job, Well done!
Surely you musy have realised by now Jamie that it isnt cheating when playing Utd. Its called gamesmanship. :)
ReplyDeleteThere is only one way to interpret his comment, it was sarcastic, to say it wasn't makes you look like a moron!
ReplyDeleteWe get it, players dive, ashley young is the next greatest diva and he is under the tutelage of one Mr. SAF! Explain that one will you...
Sorry i meant playing for utd.
ReplyDeleteFerguson slaughtered Suarez earlier in the season for diving. Then in utds last two games, Ashley Youngs diving antics have secured them the title. He rather belatedly said he had a word in his ear about it. I'd say more a pat on the back.
I thought our club had some pretty deluded fans. But, reading some of the tripe on republic of mancunia you would be led to believe the utd players were angels and the club beyond reproach. Its pathetic and why football is im sad to say a game played by thugs and watched by idiots.
Im not suggesting our team doesnt have its fair share of players who dive/ go to ground rather easily. I expect it from the S Americans. Mascherano was one of the worst. Suarez is at times annoying to watch because while he's writhing about he could be working to get the ball back. Im not trying to justify his play acting, but if you watch some of the treatment he gets without protection from the ref id say good on him. Defenders in this country get away with practically kicking seven shades of dog mess out of strikers in this country. This in my humble opinion shouldnt be allowed. It is a contact sport. But, there is a world of difference between assault and winning the ball fairly.
I dont think Drogba's antics started till after the Barca players started writhing about as if they had been shot when tackled by Chelsea players. So, to be perfectly honest i have absolutely no sympathy for Barca. The best team in Europe and still resort to cheat tricks. I thought Drogba had been a bit more honest since his outburst when they lost to Barca. I could be worng, just an observation. On a side note, i thought the ref had a great game.
ReplyDeleteBut as Liverpool fans, why would we care what an ex EFC, now MUFC player has to say about a CFC player? This is a LFC site isnt it?
ReplyDeletethe refs should start handing out yellow cards for diving especially to the socalled "first line" players like Rooney,Drogba Ronaldo, etc. The refs can usually tell a dive from a real foul.
ReplyDeleteIt seems Ferguson is quietly behind the scene encouraging players to dive at the slightest chance, as told by Jaap Stam in his Bio. Guess whatever Ferguson told Young to stop doing is complete hogwash. Manager encouraging players to dive and the FA completes the task by assigning referees to award dubious penalties for utd.
ReplyDeleteAll hail Man Utd, the FA assisted champions for so many years
Theres so much thats innacurate about that comment that its not even worth engaging it I think , i'll just reply to highlight that fact! (with sarcasm accounted for by the way!!)
ReplyDeleteThere is a difference, though, between not having any cheaters and those cheaters calling someone else out for cheating, can't you see that?
ReplyDeleteWell, at least Barca could console themselves with our manager's favourite line, they were unlucky.
ReplyDeleteas disgusting as rooney, drogba and young etc have been with thier OTT theatrics I have never been so ashamed for a player as I was for our own
ReplyDeletenumber 9 against NUFC the other week - that must be the most cowardly attempt to earn a penalty LFC has seen in many a year - thankfully it seems to have been a watershed moment as since then he's been a much better player with a much improved attitude.
diving is disgraceful no matter who does it and in what shirt - its as bad when stevie g does it as when its ashley young !
SUAREZ ??? 2012 worst diver by far. FAR.
ReplyDelete
