Lawro warns: Liverpool need to solve their 'big problem' against Arsenal...

Liverpool face Arsenal later today in possibly the most important Premier League game of the season so far. Defeat for the Reds would mean Arsenal open up a seemingly insurmountable 10 point gap between 4th and 7th, and if Chelsea also win, things will look even bleaker for Liverpool's Champions League chances.

Kenny Dalglish's players have struggled to convert their chances this season, which has led to situation where Liverpool are one of the lowest scoring teams in the league.

Speaking to the BBC yesterday, Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson warned that Liverpool will need to come 'back down to earth' after the Carling Cup victory out last Sunday and focus fully on the task at hand. Lawro also bemoaned the club's home form, and urged the team to get players in the box as much as possible. He argued:

"The Reds' big problem, though, as I've said before is that I just don't think they get enough people forward and into the opposition penalty area at key times. That has been the story of their season at home. Their failure to convert their chances almost cost them against Cardiff City at Wembley but I think they deserved to win the game.

"This is a big game in the race for fourth place and the final Champions League spot, and I think it will end with the points being shared".

A draw would suit Arsenal much more than Liverpool, and I think most fans would agree that today's game is a must-win. Hopefully, Steven Gerrard will be fit to play some part in the game, but after spending so much money, the club shouldn't still be relying on Gerrard so much.

  2. We should be out of sight by now. Arsenal's defending as a team and as a back four is shocking. They are so lazy as a team. We are taking advantage of it well but we have got to finish the chances off. Like to see more of Adam popping up on the left now and then (not constantly), as he has a better cross on him than Downing. Suarez shows great dribbling but no real penetration in terms of the pass or the finish. Bit like Hleb, great feet on them in terms of carrying the ball.

  3. We deserve what we get - bloody pathetic missing penalties every week - drawn 7 at home - NO EXCUSES - We are not unlucky - we are not good enough - Henderson could not go past a bus stop.

  4. PLEASE NO EXCUSES IF WE DONT WIN - We were very fortunate against Cardiff so lets stop kidding ourselves

  5. Kenny as always doesn't remember he can make substitutions, until it's too late

  6. Bellamy on with 2 minutes to do - MarkWright thinks we were brilliant but unlucky - no wonder the Mancs laugh at us.

  8. As soon as we couldnt go one goal up i knew that we were gone. Dalglish has a lot to answer for. He DOES NOT play our best side and he should tell all the fans why! That is fucking pathetic!!!

  11. Liverpool do not have the creativity or good enough players to be a Top four side, today proves it. Our defence is good. But the midfield onwards is hopeless apart from Suarez, Lucas, Gerrard, Bellamy and occasionally Kuyt. No creativity or any1 who can unlock teams

  12. The big bad norwich is just 4 points behind us, who would have guessed

  13. It somehow makes it worse to lose after dominating the game. It should be a consolation to have outplayed our opponents but now it just seems like the same old story...

At least JK will be happy.

  14. That was pathetic, i can not believe we were ever talked about so highly this season. Dalglish has to tell us all why he deosnt play our best side cos my god there are some duds in our team. Europa League here we come!!!

  17. People ask yourselves Our team has went backwards sooooo much (apart from the terrible Hodgson era). How we wish we had midfielders of the likes of Xabi Alonso, Mascherano again. Heck I'd even take back Raul Merelies or Aquialani.

  18. i think this one hits the hardest out of all the dissapointments for the season. Not only did we lose for the first time at home and dominate the game but it also puts the final nail in the coffin for us getting fourth spot.

We would want to win the FA cup now more than ever i would've thought.

  20. Too much money spent on average players. Poor decisions have cost us in January and the summer. I have held out hope for a top four finish but today has ended that. Someone needs to take responsibility for spending 35 Million on a Striker who doesn't fit with our system (or is just poor), 20 million on a poor winger and 16 million on a poor centre midfielder that plays on the right wing! Also why did Kenny wait till five minutes before time to change anything? I know people talk about knee jerk reactions but with the money spent we should be still in the mix for league never mind the champion’s league. The Carling cup win has just covered up a poor season so far. We were also very lucky to come away with that cup. The defence has generally been good it’s the midfield and the forwards that have let us down. Much better than last season I don’t think so we have replaced all the away losses/ draws with draws at home instead. Hope some big improvements happen over the summer or we won’t be in the mix again.

  25. What game were you lot watching? Yes we lost poor finishing again.
You all come out of the woodwork when we lose but have nothing to say when we win.

  26. JJ - people can have whatever opinion they like; please stop attacking others just because their opinions don't confirm to your expectations. People don't have to drool with praise when we win; some people prefer to look at games in the context of the season so far, and not just revert to short-termism for a quick feel-good fix.

  27. You call that attacking other fans saying they only comment when we lose?
Was it a bad a performance as what some are putting?I have been abused on here plenty of times and you have said nothing!

  28. What's hilarious is that we took Lawro's advice and got people into the box, but a gooal was just not meant to be! By contrast, Arsenal did it the way we typically do - without outstanding chances, and momentary lapses by Carra and Pepe respectively gifted Arsenal the points.

  29. It was the impact of the ball against the woodwork that forced them out!
