During the infamous summer of 2009, Anfield hero Xabi Alonso left for Real Madrid after rebuffing a potential move to Juventus. Liverpool fans still miss Alonso's elegance in the centre of the field, and after two and half years at the Bernebeau, Juventus are again trying to sign the Spaniard.
Alonso will forever be a hero to Liverpool fans for his vital equalising goal in the 2005 Champions League final. The Spaniard's unrivalled range of passing was a joy to behold, and he was an integral part of Liverpool's 2008-9 push for the league title.
It will never happen, but I would love to see Alonso back at Liverpool. I like Charlie Adam, but he's clearly not in the same league as Alonso.
Real Madrid are favourites for the La Liga title this season, which would represent Alonso's first title with the club, but will he be moving on during the summer?
Alonso's agent, Inaki Ibanez, doesn't think a move is on the cards, as he told Calciomercato:
"I think a move to Juventus for Xabi is an impossible thing. It's not a money problem, now the player has a great time at Real and I see no possibility that he moves, neither to go to Turin nor to another club.
"He still has two years and a half contract, then we will see. Finishing his career at Real Madrid? It's a possibility, although in football you never know.
"Juventus had the chance to buy Xabi Alonso two and a half years ago [when he was at Liverpool], but no agreement was found. I think it's a train which has passed and now it is no longer possible to take again"
With his pursuit of Gareth Barry, Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was arguably responsible for pushing Alonso towards the Anfield exit, and in all honesty, after that, who could blame him for leaving?

come back home to liverpool
ReplyDeleteLosing xabi was the most stupid move i have seen the club do in recent time!!! We are continuing to struggle with the ramifications..
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons why Rafa should never be allowed to be the manager of Liverpool again. Swap Alonso for Barry, what the hell was you thinking?

ReplyDeleteIt was not a swap move, Barry was cover for Xabi
ReplyDeleteAnd king kenny the best manager in the world got us the new Alonso ....CHARLIE ADAM...
ReplyDeleteWonder which is the bigger mistake....lets hope juventus don't realise we have the new Alonso and try signing him.
Alonso was unhappy with 50% tax increase coming in
ReplyDeleteHe clearly stated this in interviews
His deal at Real earns him €4.5 million nett per year (AFTER tax), possibly up to double his nett earnings at Liverpool - oh sorry, NETT figures don't count on here :)
Now that tax laws have changed in Spain, from 24% to 54%, quelle surprise!!! Xabi might move somewhere else
Taxman had more of role in pushing him out than Rafa me thinks!!!!
But who brought Alonso to Liverpool? We also have to remember that.
ReplyDeleteBarry would have played along with Alonso it's simple. Alonso,Barry&Gerrard some midfield that would have been
ReplyDeletewhy the fk is there a manure ad on this page. ps come back xabi
ReplyDeletethe 50% tax increase is a myth, player get paid half there money into trust funds to avoid a lot the tax like yaya torre at city. they are losing next to nothing now. so when they say he is on 200k a week it is more like 180k but with tax savings it is ,more like 200k
ReplyDeleteYeh, alright mate(!)
ReplyDeleteand Masch? ****ing hell, some people and their blind loyalty
ReplyDeleteDear Jamie. For some time i did enjoy reading what you had on mind. However i am getting increasingly tired of you constant negativity. I see it as a sign of you being impatient. I do very well understand that, but i am afraid i have to ask you for a bit more. A bit more trust, a bit more faith, a bit more respect - simply a bit more patience. I think no one can argue that we aren't slowly progressing, nobody can argue that we do not have a better squad now than we had this time a year ago. We have improved under Kenny, we have. Not as much as we could have hoped for - but progress is being made. The Mickey Mouse Cup, yes maybe the least attractive one, but at least we finally have something to show. Top four or not, our squad will be a bit better again next year and so on - we will keep improving and sooner or later win the league. I have no doubt we one day will see Liverpool back where it belongs… But please everybody, we have waited so many years - keep being patient. Be it sooner GREAT, be it later - well, we would still have that to look forward to. Let us embrace our club with a positive vibe - let us have gun, enjoy what we got, not dreaming of our neighbors wife. I think you are guilty of that Jamie. Please put you personal agenda in the background and channel all that energy of yours into something positive, something that will lift the place - and thereby the institution that we love. Liverpool Football Club!
ReplyDeleteKind Regards
McManaman,Owen,Alonso,Mascherano,Torres and Meireles.6 players that left the club because they was hunting a bigger salary.F**k them
ReplyDeleteAlonso coming back?Nooo I wont buy the ides of bringing him back to Anfield. His football calibre has reduced.Lucas has grown and matured now and we also have Spearing coming up.I think we ae OK now but dont doubt me hes still a hero to us.
ReplyDelete....and they have better tapas in Madrid.
ReplyDeleteSo basically anything to absolve Rafa, is that how it goes?
Four of them went to the big Spanish sides. Understandable, its not as if Liverpool have been at the peak of their powers in the last two decades is it
ReplyDeleteIf Real Madrid win La Liga, who's to say that Alonso might not return to LFC? He is certainly a superior player to Adam with a better passing range. Alonso's experience will contribute to LFC pushing for a higher finish next season and allow one of the youngsters to be groomed for the first team.
ReplyDeleteNo it wasn't
