Alan Hansen blasts: No more excuses - Liverpool have a big 'flaw' to fix...

Every Liverpool fan is still reeling from the inexplicable defeat to QPR on Wednesday, and Anfield legend Alan Hansen is no exception. The former Reds defender watched in horror as his old team capitulated at Loftus Road, and after the game, Hansen called for excuses to stop, and urged Kenny Dalglish to fix the 'flaw' that has held Liverpool back all season.

Summarising the game on Match of the Day last night, Hanse was quick to praise QPR's 'tremendous effort' to get back into the game and go on to win, but conceded that Liverpool handed the game to them on a silver platter. He observed:

"Liverpool were 2-0 up and absolutely cruising, and you're thinking it could 3, 4 or 5, and if that happens, there's no way back.

"Liverpool just fell apart though, and now it's four defeats in five games.

"You cannot keep on saying that they're playing great but keep getting beaten; there must be a flaw in there somewhere, and they've got to eradicate the problems that they've got."

Flaw 'singular'? Try flaws plural (!) - Liverpool have lots of problems at the moment, and it doesn't look like Kenny Dalglish is the man to fix them.

Indeed, many of the flaws are of the King's own making, and they persist as a result of his damaging intransigence, and misguided mollycoddling of grossly under-performing players.

The crisis we're in would be far easier to bear and deal with if so many of our fans didn't keep looking at things from their pink glasses and support-means-blind-faith attitude.

  2. Spot on. Kenny is not the man to take this club forward.

  5. i hope adam is injured and we give some youth a chance. talk of sterling leaving disturbs me greatly. surely he cant be worse than henderson or downing and must be given a shot.
KD is running out of excuses, and when the fa cup exit happens, the walls will be closing in.

  6. Maybe Kenny isn't the man to take us forward but anybody wanting Rafa back is crazy. Rafa was far too defensive, was a terrible man manager and wasted ridiculous amounts of money on very average players. I don't know if Guadiola would be available or interested but I would love to see him at Liverpool.

  7. The mismanagement of lfc is the reason we are in this mess, 20 odd yrs without a title, all the money we have wasted on aqua, keane,Carroll, Henderson , etc the owners are really the main culprits of this, from hicks gillet , to David Morgan, by employing shite managers and backing them with loads a money to buy crap players they are to blame now it is quiet clear the fans of lfc are one the best most loyal and devoted set of fans and deserve better the one thing we need to change is our stupid fkn loyalty to our managers , let's face it Lenny daglish has been fkn shocking in every way he is a dinosaur of the old division one he has made a show of us to the media with his paranoid bollox every time he does an interview , why don't we give someone like been dan rovers a 2 try deal and see wat he can do at least he will play the likes a sterling and good football style , we have class in our side we just coach the skill from them to play the worst footie in the prem most boring predictable shite , I want the new owners to prove they are different and just fkn sack daglish and fast fk the old Liverpool way

  8. Kenny can start with admitting that he screwed it up. He is still under illusion that Liverpool is playing the best football for a decade now, its only results.

He can't fix nothing until he admits that there are problems.

  9. Once in a while, would be nice to see KK have a go at the players in public. Just to let them and the fans know that he isn't taking any rubbish and putting some public pressure on them, instead of backing them all the bloody time.

He even refused the thought of complacency when suggested to him that it was complacency that let us down against QPR. It was simply 'don't know what happened' kind of answer as per usual. Though some times he says 'bad luck', which just winds me up as this so-called bad luck has happened a lot for us.

I just hope at least behind doors that he realises the problems with Charlie Adam, the contradictory tactics when he plays Carroll, Gerrard in a two-man central midfield, the long term right wing problem as Downing and Hendo just can't cut it out there, etc.

  10. Another dark night of absolute humiliation and embarrassement by Kenny
Dalglish and his squad, the squad he has personally chosen and set up for the
current season. Kenny Dalglish and his squad tarnish the heritage that Bill
Shankly and Bob Paisley left for this historic club. Kenny Dalglish and his
squad are committing the biggest crime in this club's history by molesting on
this heritage. Everybody is feeling fed up by listening and reading all the
time different irrational statements by the side of Kenny Dalglish as he can
persuade first and above all himself that under him the team is progressing!
Everytime he leads this team to another humiliating and embarrassing defeat he needs
to realize that he places a gravestone to LFC fans' dreams and expectations in
all over the world to see their beloved team returning back to where it really
deserves to be! I personally can't explain it otherwise; Kenny Dalglish is on a
denial stage! He doesn't realize that by not seeing the raw reality, that he is
not a capable manager for the modernized football and the manager who can turn
the fortunes of this club around and as long as he behaves in a selfish manner
he causes a serious damage! Back in 1991 he stepped down as LFC manager in a
period which that was unnecessary and now that it is imperative to do so, why
doesn't him? ISN'T THAT A REAL PROOF OF A SELFISH, EGOISTIC, AND ARROGANT
    BEHAVIOR?

  11. If Kenny is not the man to take us forward than I hope he moves upstairs cos I would like to c him b involved at the club. I wouldn't like to c him get the sack. For me there is only one man for Lfc R BENITEZ.

  12. Biggest flaw is Kenny got most of his big signings wrong.

Second flaw instead of playing his best 11, he has persisted with team of  his expensive flops and it has affected the results. Still can't believe he doesn't play Maxi when he is one of our most prolific player in front of goal and specially when we have struggled to score goals.

Kenny should have built on the success he had last season, but he instead changed everything for worse, selling Meireles was a mistake and bringing Adam was bigger mistake. His most baffling mistake letting go Aquilani because he couldn't fit him in the team, when Aquilani was definitely our best player in the pre-season.

Kenny hasn't shown any tactical nous either, many times we haven't got the right result because he doesn't goes out for a win, he leaves it to chance rather than trying to change things. His substitutions are always really late when their is not much chance for a player to make an impact.
For me he plays it too safe.

Kenny did a great job as a care taker manager but don't think he has done enough to show that he is the right man for the job long term.

I would though still persist with him next season but if nothing changes for good then i would like to see him out.

  13. The most annoying thing for me is we are missing a winger and a prolific striker and potentially we have both playing in the reserves in Morgan and sterling. We have nothing to play for now in the league so if KK doesn't give them a chance for me this will be inexcusable.

  15. I agree. I do hope Adam is injured & out for a while. That is a sad indictment on LFC & I never thought I would be saying that about any LFC player. He is not good enough & he along with a few others need to go. Pepe Reina also needs to take a look at himself as I am not sure he really wants it any more. Kenny has his work cut out!

  17. Is anyone else getting annoyed with Kenny's press conferences? When he gets asked a perfectly reasonable question, he either doesnt answer or reacts like the reporter just asked him the stupidest question in the world. Its embarrassing. And he thinks we can still finish fourth? Deluded.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I've been making this point all season. The fact he can't deal with the modern press is another indicator that he is out of his depth.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Dull, dull, dull. He was rubbish and would have got the sack under any other board if it were not Tom & Jerry. He was for to defensivly minded for LFC. We need a passing attacking game with pace not zonale marking.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Spot on mate! Kenny has shown his true colour since he became permanent manager. As soon as he got 3 years contract he screwed up in last 2 games of last season.

He was definitely different manager when he was care taker. He got all his signings wrong and bigger problem is Kenny is not realizing it. He should give up on his signing and change things. If he does not, those flop players will cost him his job.

Majority of the players Rafa bought valued a lot more than what we bought for after a year with Liverpool. What would we get for these Kenny's British lot if we want to flog them off ?

What a cursed luck Liverpool has got. After decades we got a big money to spend and the chance is wasted by our legend. Wish it was someone else. Liverpool lost in many ways....

  22. What facts have I got wrong? He wasted vast amounts on players like Aqualani, Dossena, Gonzalez and Riera. He alienated Alonso, Crouch and Bellamy so they had to leave and continually played players such as Voronin, Nunez, Kyriakos, Degan, Morientes and Kromkamp who was never good enough to play for Liverpool. When he finally left he took a large amount of compensation with him at a time when Liverpool was struggling financially, money that could of been spent on the awful squad of players he left us with.

  23. 205 shots on target last season
163 shots on target this season
229 shots off target for the whole of last season223 shots off target this season already with 9 games to go.
Seeing at how many shots we should have already won games before subs are needed.
The failure of Kenny and the club to bring in a goal scorer in January is the main problem with Suarez and others still struggling to put away one on one chances with the keeper.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Out of curiousity, do you know how many shots were taken from the period Kenny took over last season (inc. caretaker period) to the end of the last season? I ask because we terrific in that period, in terms of overall impact.

  25. Right its now seems that probably 96% of this site now want KK gone. The reason why i have used this non- specific percentage is it is the same percentage that wanted Roy out and the same percentage that wanted KK in. Right the fans have spoken again, they are using the same ultimate wisdom that UNANIMOUSLY got KK to get the job. Its is quite laughable when you think, most fans who are saying negative comments now, 12 months ago where praying for KK to get the job. I do find it funny that people come on here and express their veiws with utter conviction and an air of specialisation. If these fans are so knowledgeable, why did 96% of you all vote against KK at the time of him taking over?? You did'nt because everywanted him to be given a 3 year contract. Ok this year has not gone to plan in the league and there is work to do, i accept this and so does KK. We may get a consolidation by winning two cups, but ultimately, I like every other liverpool fan, was happy when he signed for 3 years. KK has given this club more success than anyone on this site put together, so my main question is. Will you give time to get it right? I wanted him at the club and i wanted him to sign the 3 year contract so i will stand by my original stance and give the man time. At the end of 3 years if we are still the same and we have not gone forward in the league then. I will descretely say it is time for a change. But what i will and never will do is slate one of if not the greates player to have ever played for liverpool and is still the only manager to win the double with liverpool. I will give him respect and if possible slate him in a dignified manner!!!!

  26. I really hope that KD doesn't get next season, if so Liverpool will end up as 11 or 12 in the BPL.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No sorry Chan. It would be good to know and our conversion rate for the second half of the season seeing we seemed to be scoring goals for fun at one point until the last 2 games of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  28. In 2009season we scored more goals than the team who won the league mate. Is that defensive. We all have opinions mate. But for me the win in Madrid than beating them 4:0 at Anfield, MU 4:1 at OT will live with me 4ever. There is the game against olimpiakos, Chavs game and than Istanbul. If that's dull, dull, dull for u than fine. But just keep dreaming that u will ever experience those nights again under the messiah KD.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ah ok, pity, as it would be interesting reading and maybe help to concoct a 'guesstimate' (emphasis on guesstimate, as I know its not a fool-proof way of looking at it) correlation between some of the tactical/personnel changes KK has made between then and this season.

Maxi scored most of his 10 league goals in the second half of last season, though six of them were two hat tricks which does, admittedly, hype it up in a certain way.

    ReplyDelete
  30. On the LFC website you can compare players from this season and last season if you go to the Team header.
Maxi has been treated poorly came an important player when paired with Suarez and so was Meireles who now seems to be suffering at Chelsea for all their problems.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Odd seeing Meireles used sometimes as the sole holding midfielder at Chelsea. I think in the Napoli away game, he was used there and no wonder that game was a messy fun end to end game. Been used all over the midfield by Chelsea, along with Ramires

Liverpool is not going to get the 4th place to qualify for CL,we'll play in Europa league for winning the Carling Cup so it won't matter if Liverpool lose the remaining league fixtures , at least it'll ensure Dalglish be sacked.Rafa to me is also not the man to win us the league.LFC should try to get Mourinho,Hiddink or somebody like that but the key to win the league is we should buy the proven and technically excellent players.Stop buying British dross.

Philip, since the reign of Houllier there have been maybe 6 players who when signed really captured the imagination of the Anfield faithful (or maybe its just me!).  Litmanen, Torres, Kewell, Alonso, Babel and Suarez.  Thats a grand total of 2 players in 5 years for Houllier.  3 players in 6 years for Benitiez and 1 in 1 year for Kenny.  I don't think we necessarily expected to win the league this season but we were half expecting Kenny would end the drought of potential world class players that have been brought into the club over the last 12-13 years.  Liverpool's business model of buying flair less workers in every position is the complete opposite model to that of United and Arsenal who have been intent on trying to sign technical excellence and have both in the process signed players like Pires, Viera, overmars, Henry, Chamberlain, Fabregas, Ljunberg, Ronaldo, Rooney, Veron (ok he flopped) nani, Anderson, Van persie, Hleb and the list goes on.  All of these players had the potential to go on and compete for the crown of best in the world.

Whatever faith I had in Kenny declined as soon (and thats no exaggeration) as Carroll, Henderson and Downing came through the door.  To  spend so much money on slow workmanlike players with such a soft centered pampered British mentality and lack of technique was ludicrous.  I am not as arrogant to believe we are entitled to win anything but I do know the kind of players I want to see, the kind of player that makes the crowd go "Woooooooow" in unison.  The teams who compete in the prem have a top keeper, solid defence and a flair orientated varied attack.  At the moment we have 1 and a half...  a good defence and half a decent goalkeeper...Not good enough.

It is unfortunately the whispering fan who will take the club backwards.  The same way the whispering fan went mute when it was time for Carra to make way and will again when our legendary Dalglish drags us to despair.  No doubt when Gerrard has over stayed his welcome for two or so years the whispering fans will still be trying to operate their tongues.  I'm just glad that after Carra, Gerrard and Dalglish have gone we can finally start to treat everyone equally without the hero worship that is dragging us down.

Hopefully we will soon be adding Kenny's name to that off Hoddle and Howard Kendall...hero's who paid the price for taking 'their' clubs backwards.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thing is, when people have to hope that players are not available, then we really do have to look at the management! Agree, Reina has been living on reputation for some time now.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Perfect post, nothing else to add to that. Although i wonder if, by the time our local heroes retire, Suarez or Reina will become the favourites of the whispering fan! Not that i expect either to stay for that long if we don't improve rapidly.

Even our British signings have been poor. Chamberlain, young, quick, English, coming in at half the price of Henderson, young and English, does not make any sense.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Agreed, and we should not go back to Rafa either. The boot room days are long gone and we need to find a new way to get things going. Or if we are going to try to go back to that, we need to send out a host of our senior players to get their qualifications, let them manage at other clubs, or coach here together, under a top manager from outside, and then see how they get on.

I suspect that Carragher will be back as a manager at some point, whether he is up to the task or not. So the curse of the untouchables may still come back to haunt us at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  44. To be fair, if Kenny does get the sack dont expect the top end managers, FSG will ensure they pick a young person who they will be able to inflict their philosophy on and ensure that comolli is not interupted in his ideology. play the youngsters, sell players at their peak and become the next arsenal. win nothing, earn lots of money and skim off the top. As long as you get 4th spot the fans are happy and you get your cash. The best thing about a fan from a buisness point of veiw is where a customer will buy the best product and change allegences to things depending on how good they are, a fan will buy your product no matter how good it is. this is why liverpool is so attractive, lots of fans who will fill the staduim even of you dont win anything as long as you have the illusion you will nearly win something by coming 4th.

"If I did become a manager, of all the ones I've had, I'd probably be
most similar in style to Gerard Houllier," Carragher told LFC Weekly

    And the vicious cycle continues.........

I'd rather us get a manager in like Rijkaard.  Worst case scenario if it doesn't work out tactically for Rijkaard is he signs a group of incredibly talented players that his successor will be happy to use and the fans will be happy to see take to the pitch.

Agree about Rafa too.  An offensive coach has to be the way forward.

Arsenal have laid their foundations with their new stadium generating staggering amounts of money.  Combined with an incredible scouting network, wage structure, low transfer fees and the courage to field young exciting players Arsenal are merely keeping things ticking over until they pay for their stadium.  As soon as their outgoings reduce they will be a force for years to come making signings that most teams in the league will struggle to compete with.  This is real forethought.

LFC on the other hand make poor expensive signings, have high ages have no new stadium, will not be in the CL and are afraid to use our youth players.  WE are the anti forethought.

  52. Yes, we definitely need an attacking manager. I wouldn't mind us giving Villas Boas a go, to be honest. But, for results, even though he is not the most attacking, I'd still like to see O'Neill.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Like Newcastle, we like a messiah here, and our results, in the long term, will become like theirs if we are not careful. Those who worship a messiah usually don't have a matching term for 'messiah', so these people can never do any wrong. Let's face it, that's where blind faith takes you. Anyone still believing in what the team is doing, after Wigan, really is surviving on blind faith.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Couldn't agree more. I personally have nightmares about a team of Carraghers not dreams. Hard workers who don't have any technical ability. I'd rather a Babel (the one who started off with all the confidence) then a Dirk Kuyt who runs all day-yes-but aimlessly and very VERY slowly.

This is the reason we aren't winning to the "smaller" teams. We don't have that natural balance of players that all they want to do is attack for ninety minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Sterling is a talent but there's danger in throwing youth in and expecting them to perform. The issue for me is the system played and the formation which does not suit the players we have.
