Manchester United fans never miss an opportunity to gleefully remind Liverpool fans that when it comes to winning the league, United are now in the lead with 19 titles. It's one of those depressing, inescapable facts that every fan knows about, but Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish claimed today that he did not know that United were challenging for their 20th league title this season.
During his weekly press conference today, Dalglish was asked the following question:
"Do you think about stopping them [Man United] or at least doing something to stop them making it 20 league titles?"
Amazingly, with complete sincerity and without sarcasm, Dalglish responded:
"I never knew that figure, so for us, we're just concentrating on looking after Liverpool football club against Manchester United, and that's the next fixture.
How could a manager of Liverpool *not* know that Man United had won 19 league titles, and are challenging for a 20th? Okay, it's possible Dalglish was lying, but what would be the point? And let's not forget that today's press conference was closed off to all media but a selected few, mostly Pro-LFC journalists.
I've seen every Dalglish press conference since he returned to Anfield, and on many occasions, he's claimed that he didn't know something completely obvious. A prime example is regularly claiming not to know how many league points Liverpool have; I always thought he was just being flippant, but perhaps he genuinely doesn't know half the stuff he claims?
As I noted earlier, it's possible that Dalglish just decided not to be truthful (for whatever reason), but if he genuinely doesn't know such a simple fact about Man United, then what else doesn't he know about?
Is it even important that Dalglish knows facts like this, or is it irrelevant to the job of managing Liverpool?

Was it not just a sarcastic comment? Not watched this yet myself but pretty sure it will be in keeping with his previous comments. I don't think anyone can believe he's not aware of the facts mentioned.
ReplyDeleteBit of non-story this one, and I usually enjoy your writing.
oh lord
ReplyDeleteiTS IRRELEVANT HE TAKES EACH GAME AS IT COME,S
ReplyDeleteI hope Daglish remains at LFC for a very long time
ReplyDeleteHe has taken LFC backwards and dragged your club through the dirt with his pathetic behaviour
It's an irrelevant fact, but when any SCUM fan says otherwise then remind them to visit Anfield and see the only CL trophy on British soil....
ReplyDeleteNo, it was not a sarcastic moment. As I said in the article, he was completely sincere. Also, the press conference was closed off to only an invited few, i.e. pro-LFC journos.
ReplyDeleteHe is making a point about not caring about what another team is doing or how many titles they have and saying he is focused on Liverpool and Liverpool alone. The way he said it is just his style.
ReplyDeleteOr, it could be that he genuinely didn't know that United had surpassed Liverpool's 18 league title haul. Why would he lie, and specifically stats 'I don't know that figure'?
ReplyDeleteLast week, he blasted the press for suggesting he was lying about signing someone during the transfer window, so the idea that he would deliberately lie herre doesn't really wash.
I hope Kenny stays at LFC for a long time also for he will make you eat your inaccurate aspersions. What a good loyal supporter you are distracting your energies from your own team to right pathetic inaccuracies about other teams. Lol.
ReplyDeleteYet another person who is incapable of having a civilised discussion about football without an ingrained persecution complex taking over. What has this post got to do with Dalglish's tenure as LFC manager? Absolutely nothing.
ReplyDeleteHow exactly has he taken the club backwards? I too hope that he stays for a long time though. Nothing like beating Utd in cup compititions and taking points off them in the league. I look forward to the day that Sir Alex retires (great manager), as his love child Howard Webb will stop handing points the Utd on a plate!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if he knows about Suarez's interview on Uruguayan radio the other day, just after he told the world that 'he should never have been unavailable'.
ReplyDeleteAs a Liverpool supporter i DON'T aknowledge any achievements by ManU ONLY their defeats, this is what KD is really saying...
ReplyDeleteKenny continually belittles man united and doesn't want to be drawn into the kind of bitter irked responses that we saw from benitez with the infamous 'Fact' rant. Although i thought benitez was spot on and it was quite humourous it gave sky et al an opportunity to twist his words and project a image of rafa loosing it. Kenny knows what's going on!
ReplyDeleteErm,Man Utd have won the CL twice,I think
ReplyDeleteHa ha.....(ill play along then...........)
ReplyDeleteKenny also once said Hodgson should keep his job, that everyone at the club was pleased with Andy Carrol, that Downing is better than he originally thought, that Suarez did nothing wrong and judging by the following article he was also unaware uniteds 19th title was coming up....or was he.............?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1362549/Kenny-Dalglish-United-19th-League-title-weve-got-European-Cups-Anfield.html
Kenny's Jedi mind trick lives on......LONG LIVE THE JEDI!!!!!!!!
Sadly, it's three times: '68, '99 and '08
ReplyDeleteKenny's job is to help Liverpool achieve their next league title, not worry about what other teams have done.
ReplyDeleteHe can't control what happens at other clubs, only at Liverpool.
Nothing to see here..... best to just move on.
DC was responding to Hashim.
ReplyDeleteNot important but 3 points is to me,
ReplyDeleteMy bad. Sorry about that.
ReplyDeletewzup Gab.
ReplyDeleteCan you put up a link plz haven't read that one.
God he even tipped Taggot to be the next England manager. From scot to scot thats a joke!!

ReplyDeleteThis is a non story as previously stated and beneath any self respecting kopite. Who in their right mind would really think that Kenny Dalglish does not know how many titles UTD have won. For gods sake he spoke at length about this last season. Looking forward to some good coverage in the future.
ReplyDeleteJaimie, I forgive you. I am neither incapable of having a civilised discussion about football nor do I have an ingrained persecution complex. The post I replied to indeed spoke of Dalglish's tenure. Normally a good site with interesting and some thought provoking articles. Disappointed to defend my team by way of comment for you to then basically call me uncivilised and having a persecution complex? What was uncivilised about my comments - sarcastic yes, uncivilised - no. Perhaps your comments to me should be levelled at yourself - your reply was less civilised than my response it seems. Sorry to disagree with you on this occasion, but keep up the good work on this site none the less. I still enjoy the intelligently written articles.
ReplyDeleteHere is the story as reported by El Pais, A Uruguayan Newspaper.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ovaciondigital.com.uy/120208/futinter-623276/futbolinternacional/luis-suarez-el-dia-despues/
I would've posted an article about it but I prefer to get the quotes direct from the source, i.e. the interview itself, but it's not available online. I've contacted the station to see if I can get a copy of the interview.
Yes, sorry about that. I thought you were replying to me, and raising the issue of Dalglish's job when there was no need to. I couldn't see that you were replying to Hashim (I was replying from a different interface).
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to apologise for disagreeing - disagreement is always welcome, it's just on this occasion, I got the wrong end of the stick.
I think "GH" is spot on, actually. Kenny has been very specific about one thing: He's not concerning his self with anything but the next match. On multiple occasions his standard reply to such questions has thus been to feign ignorance. Also I think it's mostly irrelevant to the point under what circumstances the conference is held, since it goes public either way. Only an incompetent manager eases up just because the journalists he's facing aren't out to get him.
ReplyDeletewe have won it 5 times
ReplyDeleteNo worries Jaimie. Keep up the good work. I enjoy reading your articles.
ReplyDeletewho but a complete moron would give a shite what is being printed on the biased daily mail?
ReplyDeleteHi MrBurt
ReplyDeleteSaw this on a few websites last night, seems that our star player has been on the radio at home. Due to the Capello business, it seems to have flown under the radar, but for how long, i wonder? I totally expect a load of people to change their argument now from 'he did not say/mean what was said' to 'who cares about that french ****?' now. This was on football 365 last night.
The Liverpool striker is due to face the Red Devils this weekend for the first time since sparking a race row in October last year.
A Premier League fixture at Anfield saw the Uruguayan accused of racist abuse by United defender Patrice Evra.
An independent regulatory commission found him guilty of the charge and he had to serve an eight-match ban.
Suarez marked his return from suspension on Monday as he stepped off the bench during Liverpool's tame goalless draw with Tottenham.
His next outing could come at Old Trafford in what promises to be a tense meeting with title-chasing United.
Suarez is aware that his presence is unlikely to go down well with the home support, but plans to use taunts at him as added motivation.
"I was not depressed at all," he told Radio Sport 890 in his homeland.
"I knew what I did and there is a kind of football law that says 'what happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch and that's the end of the story'.
"I know against Man Utd it is going to be tense because I'm going to face Evra. But I'm used to having fans whistle at me.
"I hope nothing unusual happens. I'll have to forget what happened for that moment.
"I do know Man Utd fans are going to try to make me feel uncomfortable. But I have to tell them, they are going to spur me on if they whistle at me."
"I know that people are viewing me differently in England,'' Suarez continued.
"For example, against Tottenham, when I was doing the warm-up, there were three cameras pointing at me. Even when I was sitting on the bench there were many cameras on me. I feel that people are watching me. I have to understand that - it's the price I have to pay because of the ban.
"I have to be more careful: I like to protest to the referees but I will have to control myself because all the people are watching me."
Suarez also praised the Liverpool support
"I have to thank Liverpool fans, because they supported me on the pitch but also on the streets," he said.
"I feel so comfortable at Liverpool because of them. They love me."
He says 'I know what I did', wonder what that was?
Sorry, would have been easier to give you the link!!

Only mindgames from our King !!
ReplyDeleteIts just silly gamesmanship, that all managers do. Bit of a non-story....I hope so.
ReplyDeleteLike Ferguson has done in the past, KK banned a few reporters (Talksport and one or two others) today apparently. He was always prickly with the press, maybe overly so at times.
Kenny's behaviour is getting odder and odder by the day, in my opinion. He was never the most straightforward character but some of his behaviour is downright bizarre now. I hope he is not going to turn into another Ferguson all of a sudden, just as Ferguson appears to be mellowing, slightly, and appears to have totally won the PR war against us over the last 3 or 4 months.
ReplyDeletewhat he means is, we won it 5 times and so were allowed to keep the original old big ears, all other cl trophies are replicas
ReplyDeleteBut they don't have the trophy. We have the only one I think..
ReplyDeleteWhat a complete and utter shite article . You dont even make a valid point . Even if he didnt know Man U have 19 titles so what ?? He is not managing them hes managing LFC .
ReplyDelete"Lie" is a bit harsh. Its like when managers often say "I'm only focused on the next game". Of course they aren't. They are managers of football teams paid to manage the whole club. I can't tell you it is not a lie but still, its like saying your girlfriend doesn't look fat today. ;)
ReplyDeleteBack to topic; obviously he knows how many points Liverpool has, he just doesn't want to explain why they are so few. Obviously he knows how many titles Manure have, he just doesn't want to acknowledge how far we've fallen since he left. I appreciate the consideration. Lie? I suppose so..but I don't want to be called fat today. :)
Question. How does anyone know utd have won 19 titles?
ReplyDeleteAnswer. Because they never bloody shut up about it.
ha!
ReplyDeleteI was responding to Kimme's comment about the CL Trophy
ReplyDeleteYou only get to keep it after you win it 5 times. So yes Man U have won it three times but don't have a trophy.
ReplyDeleteThanks fellas interesting read. 'what happens on the mile stays on the mile huh?' not good enough.
ReplyDeletey dnt u stick to the scums and stop pokin your nose into liverpool stuff.u dirty scum
ReplyDelete
