MACCA: "He's been given ENOUGH chances in the team...

Since arriving at Liverpool in 2006, Fabio Aurelio has spent an incredible 23 months on the sidelines recovering from injury, which makes him the most injured player in the club's history. After a frustrating spell on the sidelines this season, the Brazilian made his return in the 5-1 victory at Oldham. Thankfully, he made it through the game unscathed, which is great, but former Liverpool defender Jason McAteer still can't understand how he gets injured so much.

Summarising the game for LFC TV, McAteer observed:

"I like Aurelio. He's been given enough chances in the team but he just can't keep himself fit, and I don't know why that is.

"In the modern day game now, you're got every 'ologist' [sic] under the sun to look after you.

"I just don't know what it is, he keeps breaking down with one injury after another.

"If he wants to sustain a long-term place in the team, he has to stay fit. It's certainly not his quality that'll take him out of the team".

Aurelio's contract is up in the summer, and given his injury history, it's probable it won't be renewed. Is that the right decision?

  1. Unfortunately it is the right decision really if his contract isn't renewed. At the end of the day he is behind Enrique in the pecking order an on Enriques performances to date i cant see that changing, so he's back up, but it's no good having a back up that's injured a lot is there? If we could get him on a pay as you play, or pay as you are available then great, but if not its a shame but probably not worth the gamble. A bit like Jamie Redknapp, career could have been so much better. Also Flanagans development may stutter a bit by somebody playing who may always be too injured to develop or improve.

  2. If Enrique had Aurelio's crossing power we would have the perfect left back!

  3. I really like Aurelio and he is as good as any other leftback in the league but he has chronic injuries problems and hardly plays 2-3 games before getting injured again, does he deserve a new contract?? IMO definitely a no. Though i won't mind him staying on a pay as you play basis as backup for Enrique till Jack Robinson is ready.

  4. Why dont we try him on the left wing and downing can play on the right wing

  5. of course it is the right decision. No club can afford to throw money away and Liverpool is not a health centre.I believe Aurelio is a very good player ,but at the moment he is just a very good patient.

  6. what has aurelio got to do with Flanagan they play on opposite sides of the pitch. If anything if Flanagan had an injury prone player ahead of him sureley this would help him because he would get more gametime.

  7. I meant Robinson, d'oh. And how would that be in the best interests of LFC? We'd still have someone taking wages on a full time contract with Enrique ahead an if he's not fit, Robinson. What a snivelling little response that was from you by the way.

  8. Love his ability and when he has been on the pitch but there is just no room for being sentimental. If he was to stay it could only be a pay as you play contract. I would not be surprised if it is already?

  9. We can forget about him and groom Jack Robinson or get someone in the interim.

  10. keep him. he will outperform Adam in his position. Pin-point passes and crosses are his strengths. He has been unlucky with injuries which never seem to be the same one, always a different injury.
