LFC LEGEND: "They're the SECOND BEST team in the world' - Is he right?

Manchester City may be top of the Premier League, but they were poor against Liverpool last night, and Kenny Dalglish's team arguably dominated for long periods of the game. Despite the ineffective performance, Anfield legend Steve Nicol still believes that City are the second best team in the world.

Nicol made his dubious claim on ESPN a few days ago, and whilst summarising the game for the channel last night, he was challenged to explain why he believed City were better than Real Madrid. Nicol explained:

"Madrid are cantering through games week in week out; they're scoring four and five every week, but Man City are tougher physically, tougher mentally, and if add that to their ability, that's why they would be second.

"If they get Kompany and you back, and they have their main team, and you stick Man City in La Liga, they might not beat Barcelona, but they'll be on top of Real Madrid".

Man City the second best team in the world? I don't think so. They've been underwhelming in all the games against Liverpool this season, and they didn't exactly set the Champions League on fire. What do you think?

  1. nonsense from nicol. they failed in europe and failed badly. lots to prove

  2. why is it jaimie, when ever we beat a top 4 team , its because they played poorly? no credit for closing them down not letting them play? player for player last night we were better. not including the goalies obviously!
sorry i think steve nicol talks rubbish sometimes, man city are not proven to be better than united yet, they are behind madrid, barca and bayern.
with citys strongest 11 they are capable of beating anyone, but hey so are liverpool!
city will be at least 2nd best in the future i think thats for sure

  3. Just because I said they played badly doesn't mean Liverpool didn't play well; that's an interpretation you are projecting, not me.

  4. Bollocks Man city are miles better than Liverpool. In both Carling cup games Liverpool played to their potential, where City played poor. If City had played to their potential Liverpool would have been battered. Look at the league table young man before you blurt rubbish

  5. Nonsense comment by Nicol. Real Madrid are easily the second best team in the world. Watch them more often Steve!

  6. I have to say I agree with him to a certain extent. I think their squad is full of class and we have seen the power they play with at times. Put it this way it certainly isn't exactly an outrageous statement to make.

  7. hahaha City are so poor, thats why theyre top of the league you scouse muppets, dezko should have had a penalty and Liverscum's wasnt even a penalty, you needed theRef's help to get through both games.
Cardiff will hammer you at Wembley and humiliate you all

  8. Its not about who played better or who is the better team. I am a Liverpool fan and even though we went through, Man City is still a better team than us, has more quality throughout the squad than Liverpool, and plays more entertaining football than Liverpool. The question is are they the second best team in the world, and the answer to that question is no. Let them begin to consistently win premiership medals and champion's league trophies and then who knows. Right now, they haven't won anything to suggest that. On performances in the league and on points, they are currently the top team in England, but as the champion's league elimination tells you, far from the best team in Europe, let alone the world.

That being said, they have potential to become a great team, and if they continue getting better they might just become one of the biggest teams in Europe, but only time will tell.

  9. We are a good while away from evan being considered in that bracket imo, after our dissapointing champions league run and being knocked out of various cups, we need time, but if we win the league that will change our status greatley on a global scale, and maybe then we can have a good champions league run next season and then we might be able to say were amongst the top teams in europe/ the world.

  10. didnt mean to!! my point is we did not allow them to play well, thats all. it reminded me of how we used to play chelsea in some way. and maybe didnt get the credit we deserved, because some people dont think we pehaps have the right to beat them. but it was like a european night at anfield and the fans were superb, some of the city boys were maybe affected by the atmosphere.
we all know, we need to play like that week in week out

  11. no one has a squad like citys, so they should be top, miles from liverpool. but proved one off big occasion your not complete yet. as you got found out in europe this year.
we could end up with silverware you may not.
    ( hope ye do) lol
id like to add we do have some players better than citys!

  13. all that money and nothing to show for it and by the way baloteli should never have scored against spurs cos he should ave been redcarded so karma isnt it  yous will never have aworld wide fanbase just another chelseaall money no respect

  14. Some players better than City's?

Stevie and Luis no doubt, but after that I think we have some players to match them but not better surely?

    ReplyDelete
  15. To be fair pal, Luis and Stevie is 'some' isn't it? And I believe Agger, Skrtel and Enrique would be in their first team or challenging for a place in it. Reina Would keep Hart on his toes too. I think City are better then us but to be fair we have played them four times this season and been better on three occasions in my opinion. Certainly twice. As for the second best team, people are assuming its Real Madrid but what have they done on the world stage? Nothing for a while so I think maybe waiting on the outcome of the champions league will tell us.

  16. I think to name 6 is seeing things through Red-tinted glasses.

    How about:
                           Hart
    Richards   Kompany    Agger  Enrique

                        Toure Yaya

    Silva    Gerrard    Luis          Aguero

                        Balotelli
                   (flawed genuis)

  17. Were they really that undetwhelming when they beat Liverpool 3-0?

  18. It's really tough to decide which team is the best, as every team has strengths and weaknesses ..... let's put it more platantly, Manchester City belongs to the elite now.

And just because you have won or played really well against one of the best teams in the world doesn't make you better than them all of a sudden ....

To be honest, there is no "best" team in the world .... it's just the most consistent that's regarded as the best ....

    ReplyDelete
  19. I wasn't seeing anything through rose tinted glasses at all and I think you've took my players that I feel could play for City too literally so I'll explain. I would go along with your team actually, I said Skrtel and Agger would challenge or be in the first team (and I mean alongside Kompany, but if Kompany was banned Skrtel would be in, he's been excellent this season), I also think Kelly would be a quality back up for Richards. And by saying Reina would keep Hart on his toes I would go along with your choice of Hart-on present form. I think City are a top team and will be one of the best in the world, they have a top squad who h has so much depth and with a lot of money to improve it too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. City have undoubted class players, who wouldnt have Hart, Kompany, Richards, Silva, Toure Yaya and Aguero if they had a choice but how can they be 2nd best team if already out of Champions league, FA cup and Carling cup?

One comes with the other. Lets reserve judgement for 12 months and then count the trophies.

  21. Pointless totally pointless doing a bloody poll for City on a Liverpool website, Liverpool fans are far more inten on voting Liverpool as the second best team in the world if not first.

One thing Liverpool fans have in common with United fans is a god like high arrogance.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Fair enough I just think maybe people have been getting carried away with reaching the final. We are still 20 odd points? behind City and the scum in the league.

There is still a long way to go if we are to get back in contention for the title in forthcoming years.

I would be surprised if Chelsea and Arsenal are this poor again next season?

How many of our other players have the potential to play there way into that dream team? IMO Kelly has great potential and Pepe could comfortably keep goal for that team, after that I have grave doubts.

  27. That honour must currently go to Bayern Munich, but we'll be in with a shout in 2 seasons. As it stands, I would be surprised if we are this poor again next season.

  28. I think second best team in the world is stretching it a bit far.  No doubt they're on the way to becoming a major force in european and world football but they still need to get that first major piece of silverware under their belt (by that I mean Premier League or CL, no disrespect to the FA cup but that's just not seen as that major anymore) and show consistency in winning trophies.

  29. That's the impression I got from what you wrote Jamie.  Maybe you didn't mean to project that, but that's how it came across.

  30. City Blue,if you know anything about Liverpool fans its that we definitely do not see ourselves anywhere near the top teams. As long as number 19 eludes us and we have no champions league, we cannot justify ranking ourselves highly. Besides, this article is not about who is the better team, because City are miles ahead of us, its if City are the second best team in the world. Without a premiershipcrown or a champion's league title yet, there is evidence to suggest that yet....

    ReplyDelete
  31. City Fan Here - No we are not the 2nd best team in the World with good potential for the future. Just wanted to say what a pleasant surprise to read some reasoned debate from the Liverpool fans on what could have been a very provocative thread.

PS you are are moving in the right direction under KD ....but you're all still dippers :)

  32. Apparently Werner got all lovey-dovey over Downing because of a poxy EDITED (he didn't actually put the balls into the bins, just computer magic) accuracy video, where he puts balls into bins.

Well I'm sure Comolli and co were a bit more professional than that, with their judgment reasoning for bringing in Downing....surely...

  33. 3-0 ring any bells with a stronger team selection. Played 2 days before the game let Liverpool have a ls much of the ball as they wanted and hit them hard and fast on the break without having to get out of 2nd gear. League cup games were against weakened teams and it took 2 hours 50 mins to score an open play goal and that had to be something special to beat Joe. Luckily for the "not racist"!!!!! Scousers the ref had a shocker at Anfield otherwise we were looking at another 3-0 at least. I wouldn't say we were the 2nd best but one of the only teams that can beat anyone on our day. One very happy blue enjoying the new era in English football.

  34. Ignore that city fan on here, he is not representative of us all.
Your statement about handball is wrong. Handball HAS to be deliberate and that certainly wasn't but you deserved it overall so good luck in the final.
Also i think you will go backwards with King Kenny.

    ReplyDelete
  35. This is why former Liverpool players make the worst of the worst managers.  It is a miracle we won anything in the 80's and 90's with football minds like these.  I have divorced myself from their foolish quotes and urge the rest of you to do the same.

Our icons have nothing of any significance to say.

  36. Can i jus explain to people avin ago at citys champs league exit. City had the group of death n ok prob shud of stil gone thru but we finished on 10 points. Thats usuali enough to see a team thru the group stages init so i thought they were really unlucky and if they were to hav got thru they would of grown in the competition n had a good chance.

    ReplyDelete
  37. any reason why city were poor? maybe our defensive abilities? and they did fail in europe, not sure how you can argue that

    ReplyDelete
  38. backwards till were like we were in the eighties? why thank you very much

  39. right cause obviously you deserved to win the game. in fact i dont remember hart making a save at all..

  40. Liverpool got to the final by virtue of a gift penalty at Anfield that should never have been given. It's as simple as that. Had it not been for that ridiculous decision Liverpool wouldn't have got through. Only the most biased and idiotic can view the Richards handball incident and insist that it was the right decision, because it so obviously wasn't. Added to which City have taken four out of a possible six points from Liverpool this season and top the league by three clear points. At full strength City are currently the best team in England by a mile. City aren't the second best team in the world, YET, but the club is ahead of schedule and it won't be long before they are.
