Liverpool on the verge of signing a South American "phenomenon"...

There should be quite a few transfers in the Premier League over the next week, and Liverpool fans will be hoping to see some new blood at Anfield, especially up front. Things are quiet at the moment, but last week, Bruce Grobbelaar revealed that Liverpool were tracking a Holland-based Uruguayan striker. It transpires that FC Groningen's David Texeira is the player in question, and with five goals in his three games, the 20 year old is attracting a lot of attention, and a lot of praise.

In an interview with TalkSport last week, Grobbelaar tantalisingly hinted that Liverpool football club were interested in signing TWO strikers in the January transfer window:

"There are two strikers [Liverpool are interested in]. I know that [Kenny Dalglish] is looking at a South American striker who is playing in Holland and I know that he’s quite close in getting another striker".

This site was the first to reveal that Texeira was the player in the question, and Liverpool's interest has since been confirmed by the BBC's South American football expert, Tim Vickery.

Texeira has scored five goals in his last three games for Groningen (including a hat-trick against NEC last weekend), which has prompted the Dutch press to label him a 'phenomenon'.

After the NEC game, Texeira spoke to reporters, and shrugged off the effusive praise being thrown his way. He said:

"A phenomenon is a big word. Football is a team sport, so we do everything together. I always try my best for the team and try to make contribution with goals. I am just happy that things are going well for us."

Of all the strikers linked with Liverpool recently, the Texeira deal is (IMO) the most likely to actually happen, for the following reasons:

* Youth and inexperience = Comparatively cheap transfer fee.

* Strong South American presence at Liverpool, including fellow Uruguayan's Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates.

* Signing an inexperienced 20 year old will not be perceived as a slight on Andy Carroll. If Liverpool were to spend big on a striker, it would basically amount to a vote of no confidence in Carroll, and a tacit admission by Dalglish of failure in the transfer market.

  2. only seen bits of him since his name cropped up, been trying to get a few ful games to watch but to no avail. If he is cheap and has potential then it is worth a go.

  4. I hate to disillusion people but the only confirmation of anything can come from LFC itself; not outsiders.

  7. i am actually trying really hard to have slight optimism about carroll. i dont really like british players and the way they are overvalued and overhyped and there were certainly better and cheaper options but to be honest my biggest disappointment is a lack of wingers and pace. carroll is young so could improve the technical side of his game whereas downing is the big let down. id more than welcome texeira but we still need service from the wings. we must therefore sell at least two out of downing, maxi and kuyt and buy two pacey wingers. by the way im not justifying the 35 million for carroll, no-one is more angry than me when i see some of the other strikers we could have got but i have to accept it now. bellamy shows what pace can do whenever he plays and i genuinely believe we are really strong in all other areas. also shelvey should play instead of adam or henderson sometimes, he has a lot to offer. back to topic, i really think texeira will help add depth to our attacking options.

  8. Rassell077..

Send Carroll on loan to a team that sits above us in the table? I can't see the sense in that. Whilst I feel we will finish above Newcastle, there are no guarantees of this. Give Carroll time, like any other young striker and forget about the price tag. He is a Liverpool player now, how much we paid is in the past. As for Texeira, I think that would be an interesting signing. It's surely better to take a punt on an inexpensive young striker than do nothing at all.

  9. Is Texeira the 29th or 33rd player that LFC has been linked with this January? I am rapidly losing the will to read any more rumours.

  10. i like your optimism but i dont think liverpool will turn cavani's head just yet, i agree he would be a great signing but the only way he will be coming to the prem is to go to the likes of city or chelsea, he will come for a bag full of money, but you never know!!

  12. Then don't read the rumours about Cavani which have been popping up all day. Be nice if true though and, even without Champions League football next year, I think we can still pay better than Napoli.
