Ex-Liverpool star claims: I could come out of retirement like Paul Scholes...

In the last month, Paul Scholes and Thierry Henry have made goalscoring returns for Manchester United and Arsenal respectively, and clearly inspired by their exploits, 40-year old former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has made the bold claim that he is fit enough to come out retirement and do the business at the highest level.

Speaking to The People, Collymore - who formed a superb striker partnership with Robbie Fowler between 1995 and 1997 - argued:

"I thought about making a comeback a few years ago, and in all honesty I know I could still do a job right now in any division if I was to come out of retirement.

"I’m approaching 41, but I run 10km every day and whenever I get a ball at my feet I feel as sharp as ever.

"If I was to sign for a side there is no doubt in my mind I could come on and put in a good shift for the final 15 or 20 minutes. And I’d still know where the net is".

Collymore is reviled by many Liverpool fans but he was superb for Liverpool, scoring 35 goals and getting countless assists during his two years at Anfield.

Collymore was everything Andy Carroll *should* be: A big, strong, quick, intelligent player with superb technique and a great eye for goal.

And who can forget his most famous goal for Liverpool?

Magic memories...

  1. yeah it's a shame he didn't hang around anfield a bit longer as a player, always thought he had fantastic ability but off-the field stuff always got in his way. have you any idea what's happening with defoe jaimie? any truth in it or just media speculation?

  8. Scholes was rubbish in last match. Just in 6 months he forgot that he was supposed to kick the ball, not opposition players. He was just lucky to get a goal.
If he starts regularly, he is soon going to see a red card! I would love him to start against us in FA cup tie.

  9. scholes is closing in fast on our top scorer.  will he get more goals than Downing, henderson and Carroll individually and collectively? damn right he could.

  21. I remember Collymoore saying he was coming back a few years ago saying 'I retired early, my body has less mileage than most' and then went nowhere.

'I feel as sharp as ever'. Remember that no-one can kid themselves more than a player who is past it.

That said, us Liverpool fans give him a run for his money on that count!

Whether or not Stan is in the shape to play physically, which is hugely debatable in and of itself, he wont be mentally. He never was. That may be because of his depression, in which case it isn't/wasn't really his fault, but regardless, the arrogance involved in comparing himself to two of the VERY best to play in the Prem is unbelievable.

  24. To me that may be his most famous, but the best goal for me was against 'Boro in a cup semi-final. Picked up the ball on the halfway line and ghosted thru the whol 'boro team to score. On his day he was brilliant, a joy to watch...but those days were few and far between. Shame great player on his day.

  26. If there's one man who we really could do with coming out of retirement it's Ronnie Moran!!!
Over the past 10 years, we've had a whole host of strikers with outstanding scoring records who arrived at Anfield and turned into defenders.
I've been saying it since 2004. Something is seriously wrong in the coaching department.
Doesn't matter who we sign, they will go the same way.

FWIW. as much of a disappointment as Stan ended up being, I'd take his LFC strike rate over what we have at the moment every day of the week.

  27. These sad stats sadly points to us once again being a Cup team.  Kenny welcome to the land of Houlier and Benitez.  Winning the League and Fa cup for the next 3 seasons consecutively but finishing 7th place in the league can never justify our huge outlay.

  28. Stan was that era's Tevez!! He didn't want to play football. Stan is fooling this generation's football fans but i remember pretty well. Stan was often fined for being absent from training or coming late the few times he would appear for training. He was a terrific player though with lots of talents but unless, he was not really interested with football career!! he hung his boots at age 30, it was disappointing!! From age 28-30, in 2 yrs he played like 20 games?? Stop fooling us, Stan!! People from that generation knows you're a spoiled lazy lad!!
