Rafa BENITEZ: "Football is like a game of chess...or basketball"

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is known for his prodigious attention to detail, and calm, detached approach to management, and in a recent interview, he provided a fascinating insight into how different sports have enhanced his own managerial qualities.

Speaking to El Grafico, Benitez revealed he learned different things from an array of diverse sports:

"Since I was little I have had different interests and I played different sports: football, judo, basketball, right down to chess which was one of my hobbies.

"From all of them I have taken something which has helped me on different occasions. Basketball interested me because of its constant evolution and has a lot of usable ideas.

"Anyone who knows me can tell you, without doubt, I took things from chess. In football, like chess, you have to think and analyse what’s going to happen, to have a plan A, plan B and even a plan C.

"To calmly evaluate action before you put it in to practice and be prepared, foreseeing the different options of the opponent, is what is required in modern football".

When it came to tactical assessment and preparation, Benitez was often in a league of his own at Liverpool, but it has to be said that watching his teams was sometimes as boring as watching a game of chess.

Benitez also outlined the qualities that he believes are most important when it comes to gaining the trust of players:

"Players always respect the coach’s knowledge and that is fundamental. Then his personality, his professionalism, his capacity to lead will be important to complement each other, but I think the basic principle in order to earn respect of the squad is his knowledge".

  1. Bloody hell. For a man that is out of a job, he is giving interviews/public comments left, right and centre. Enough with the PR campaign, Rafa.

  2. The best football Liverpool have played in last decade was played under Benitez. IMO 2008-09 season was the best one where Liverpool were really attractive to watch, I don't understand why people are saying that Liverpool are playing better football under Kenny as i've felt that Liverpool have been one of the most boring team to watch this season. At the end of last season under Kenny Liverpool played great but this season Liverpool have been boring and unless they start scoring more goals they will be boring.

  3. In the second half of last season, for me was as good as anything we showed under Rafa, if not better. I think we were the best team in that period, statistically, which is quite a long period of time.

But KK had to go ruin it all by selling Meireles and signing the players he did in the summer.

  4. Be great to see him back at anfield someday. I miss them classy Spanish players. If Kenny had his tactical brain or Benitez had Kenny's style of play(without zonal marking) we'd have the perfect manager.

  5. raffa put us back on the map back in 05. we never got humiliated by any team with him. and i thought we played some good football and pleasing to watch. one the main things i liked which kenny is the same, they are not yes men, who are going to please people who dont matter, ie the press and silly pundits

    ReplyDelete
  6. no, instead they come across as paranoid madmen that think the whole world is against them

  7. We've conceeded a lot more goals from set pieces with man marking this season that we did with zonal (except maybe in Rafa's first season while we were still getting used to it)

  8. the press write paper which  pretty much the whole of the world gets to read dohnut. and chumps like you obviously take it in as gospel. so why suck up to them and give them a chance to twist things. actually im wasting my time here.
must be anti raffa because im obviously pro raffa lol

  10. Are you stupid?  He didn't have a choice in selling Meireles.  And it was Comolli who signed Downing and Henderson Kenny signed Bellamy and that was a good deal

  13. This rafa business reminds me of the apple boss Jobs who has sadly died now.Jobs built apple up from nothing then a new ceo comes in and thinks he can make a name for himself,Jobs leaves because he cant work with the bosses.Apple without Jobs think they can do better, they almost go bankrupt and all go crawling to Jobs to go back, which he does and he makes apple great again. Those fans who wanted rafa out,i wonder if you go through life and never ever in your whole life have admitted youve been wrong about anything,my guess is this is the case and your lives are one laughing stock keep denying the truth and dont realise you are the village idiot you are so self consumed by your own pathetic ego and refusal to admit what everyone else can see.Rafa will be back John Henry believe me can and will be ruthless to get results and he will get Rafa back,he listened and went for Dalglish whi is graeme souness mark 2.

  14. Oh what? Someone put a gun to his head to sell Meirieles? Forced? yeh right. Meireles didn't want to leave and the club asked Raul to submit a transfer request.

Oh right, so all the bad signings are Comolli's fault but the good ones are KK's?

    Bloody hell.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Rafa didn't build from nothing. He won the CL with a squad that was mostly not his. Built 'from nothing'? Ha!

Jobs was a genius, a true genius. Amazing lack of disrespect to compare Rafa to the genius that was Jobs. Rafa is just a ok football manager who did well at times but made out to be some sort of messiah by fans.

  16. Most of the players Rafa was left werent fit to play i n the championship never mind win the champions league. The 05 champions legue win has got to be the biggest and most important sporting event in history, even if it only proves miracles can happen  under the right leadership, tactics and orgaisation, the underdogs can prevail over the better teams.Believe me Rafa winning the CL was the equivalent of David vs Goliath.Or put it another way its like Wigan athletic winning the premiership.

  17. 'biggest and most important sporting event in history'

    Haha

    Holy shit.

    Comedy gold.

So some Liverpool fans have to resort to such nonsense, after a long time being no longer the top dogs. Desperate times indeed.

  20. LFC need RAFA back 'NOW'. He brought back Dalglish for specific reasons but Dalglish undermined him! Dalglish should stick to the ambassador role that he was given because he will 'fail as a manager again'.

  26. How about outwitting Mourinho's Chelsea backed by Abramovic's millions in CL, our thrashing of Man U in the league that time we came 2nd. We did not lose to any of the top 4 teams home and away. We reached the CL final twice, which is an achievement in itself as well.

Who signed Skrtel, Agger, Reina, Lucas, Alonso, Arbeloa, Garcia, Mascherano, Kuyt, Torres all for bargains in my opinion and revamped the academy which is starting to bear fruit now (Kelly, Shelvey probably the most prominent).

To belittle one of our best managers in LFC history is a disgrace. Daglish has been out of management for many years and I hope his British experiment works out but I am not holding my breath.

  27. This post alone destroys all other anti Rafa arguments... NNIIICEE!!

  28. Shelvey was bought by hodgson last season from charlton. He's not a youth academy graduate.

  29. Yes I admit I made a mistake there. I meant to write Spearing.

    ReplyDelete
  30. KK has been great for us and we need to believe he can turn this around but it does look a challenge. Adam (clumsy clout) downing henderson are good players but not good enough for LFC sadly. They all look like trying to be great instead of just being it like suarez for example. The Stoke game turned it for me in terms of Kenny. I realised that the technical classy players we are crying out for have been shipped off! Cole, Aqua, Raul, Maxi (benched), even babbel. In terms of technical ability these guys are miles ahead of Kuyt, Downing, Henderson, Adam, Carra, Carroll, Spearing etc. FSG probably encouraged these purchases due to the business sense of things and how LFC can save going forward with the new laws coming into play.

Rafa was simply brilliant people. If he had FSG behing him instead of Hicks and Gillette we would be something I tell you. He would have spent the 120 million much better than Kenny and Damien and that is my honest opinion. He brought in no name brands like Torres, Alonso, Mascherano, Reina, Arebeloa, Garcia, Agger, Skrtel etc and made them into worls class players! He made us a hefty profit on them too! Lucas was our best player last season. Rafa paid 4.5 mill for him. Reina costed 6 mill and we had turned down 22 million for him. He tried for Ronaldo, Dani Alves, Gareth Barry, Vidic, Silva and LFC did and could not support him for these purchases. He always tried his best for LFC and proves it up to today by staying in Liverpool. They say he was not emotional enough yet he cried like a baby at the Hillborough memmorial service at Anfield. He won the UCL with Igor Biscan and Traore etc. He got Gerrard to score 23 goals from right wing. He donates funds to charity like he has a bottomless pit of money. Not bad for someone who is umemployed hey....

    In Rafa I trust...

  31. Shelvey was NOT bought by Hodgson, he was bought by Rafa as was Sterling and Suso

  32. I won't become a knee jerk sack Kenny Daglish now supporter because that won't achieve anything constructive and it will be tarnishing the image and name of a Liverpool legend.

Nor do I think Rafa was untouchable. He was human also and had several flaws. But for the life of me I cannot understand how a Liverpool fan cannot appreciate what the man has done for the Club. He poured his life and soul into the Club and was dedicated to getting the Club back where it should be.

Through all the pressure he put on himself, the expectations after winning the CL and the xenophobic British media giving him “HELL” because he was probably one of the biggest, long term threats to Ferguson’s Premier League reign; stressed and weathered Rafa to the point he lost hair, put on weight and even became wrinkled in the few years he managed the Club.

Even Houllier had his glorious moments but after the heart bypass surgery health scare he was never the same. I feared Rafa will go down that same path but he definitely had the mental strength to deal with the pressure even though it was taking its toll on his body.

Houllier introduced the first phase in modernising LFC to European standards: academy, diet control, fitness etc. and Rafa took it a step further for the academy bringing in former Barcelona youth coaches, sports scientists, modern tactics and top scouts.

Anyway, at least we have new owners now which is a step in the right direction and for the first time in a long time our Club is not in serious debt. KD cannot work miracles and it may take years to bring LFC back to where we were in 2008-2009 thanks to the damage caused by the former owners but we will have to be patient and hope this long-term project started by Rafa and continued by Kenny will pan out.

I do hope one day Rafa becomes involved with LFC because he understood and embraced our values and is one of a select few managers that has encyclopedic knowledge of the game and not only experience but success in different leagues. It was a huge achievement winning 2 La Ligas with Valencia despite being financially dwarfed by Madrid and Barca that were taking it in turns dominating the TV Revenue, titles and Cups.
The same can be said in England sparring with an established manager in Arsene who has had significantly more years developing the style of play and team he wanted; Alex Ferguson who was not only established but was able to purchase multiple 20-30 million + players and had years of success and the media/officials backing him; not to mention Chelsea who had Abramovic’s billions out powering even Man United’s spending power and managed by a very cocky but able manager in Mourinho.  Is it no wonder that we couldn’t win the league with 82 points and how 3 out of 4 teams in the CL finals were all from the Premier League until they cancelled each other out!

Some people may argue that KD has it tough getting into the top 4 now with Spurs and City on the rise but don’t let that fool you. Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United are a shadow of the teams they were a few seasons ago. No Ronaldo, an ageing Drogba, an Arsenal side losing to Swansea, a Man U team getting knocked out by FC Basel??? Even City could not manage to get through the group stages of the CL struggling against Napoli distinctively average European opposition. If Rafa’s 2008-2009 Liverpool side was playing this season, we will most definitely be competing for the title not languishing below New Castle.  All that was required was the CL funds to keep funding Rafa’s first choice players to keep on improving and gaining a stronghold but of course H&G had other ideas and the rest is history.

  35. YogiBear I totally agree and also one of the main people that undermined Rafa was Carragher...this man is a poisonous toad.
I hope John Henry is as ruthless as he was with Boston Red Sox, if he is then Kenny Dalglish's feet wont touch the ground at the end of this season.
No amount of fan power will persuade Henry nor will Dalglish's reputation.
He's had his nostalgia tour He's had his British experiment and it's NOT WORKING.
My only fear is would Rafa want to come back?
    Don't assume he would

  39. Someone twitted that there are only 2 seasons in which Liverpool scored fewer goals after 21 games: 1923-24 (23 goals, 16th place) & 1970-71 (23 goals, 6th place).  The go-British project does not seem to cut it.

I would rather have the Spanish chess master in charge and his "boring" intricate football than the "exciting" direct football we watch now.

  40. Still believe that Rafa is a good manager, but for now I still trust KD to lead the Anfield Gank to the highest level.

  41. No please don't make fun of this guy. He is right. Before 2005, no underdog had ever won. Nobody won under the right leadership, tatics and organization. all this was proven to be true only after 2005. Heck football din't start in 1992. It started in 2005. Also a team containing the likes of Gerrard, hamman, garcia et all was like the Wigan of today. Also by this same logic I have been able to deduce that Northampton beating Liverpool (69 places above them) on penalties being taken at the 'kop end' was the second most important event in history. It proved that under the right leadership, tactics and organization ...

  42. Hodgson signed Shelvey but it was under Rafa the deal was put in place. Similarly with Wilson and Jovanovic though Jovanovic didn't work out.

  44. Wow so we've gone from challenging for the Champions League to scavenging for Carling Cups and FA cups which we ALL KNOW are not the pinnacle of success.
I don't trust Kenny Dalglish because he WASTED £35 million on a terrible player.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'd imagine club did ask him to put in a transfer request. I don't think Comolli nor Dalglish wanted to sell Meireles, but if the board collectively decides they want rid of, they don't have to put guns to anyone's head, they only needed to tell DC/KD their directives.

All I see is quotes from Meireles that doesn't seem to suggest that KK was forced to sell Raul

Instead all the other money spent under his reign was spent on chocolates(!)

Genius(!) Give the man a Nobel(!) Lets start a petition(!)

  50. Actually, Kenny does have Rafa's tactical brain. If you've read his chalkboard analyses when he had a weekly column for The Daily Mail it was very evident. Zonal marking is also superior by far to man marking, it allows for a team to keep tactical shape while defending and winning the ball back and is more effective against teams with too many players to mark.

I personally feel Kenny trusts his players a little too much and doesn't put them through enough drills, but at least his methods have boosted team spirit and togetherness. Our attacks certainly lack system/discipline as do our counters and this is certainly a sign that our boys haven't been doing attacking drills and are just going by flair/instinct. For our English players(except Shelvey and Stevie), perhaps it might be better to let them know specifically what they have to do so they don't appear so clueless which they do. Henderson needs to know what he's allowed to do, Carroll needs to know how/where to move, Downing needs to be more aware of his teammates - all these can and should be instructed.

Carra and Enrique study the game, Maxi, Kuyt and Bellamy have the experience, Jay, Shelvey, Gerrard, Adam and Suarez have their own ideas. These players can be trusted to do their own thing, but it's certainly not a 1 size fits all game. Both Henderson and Downing are pacy and Henderson has the ball skills where Carroll has demonstrated his quality with Newcastle but none of them have truly applied themselves effectively on a regular basis for us and for top professionals, surely it can only be a mental thing and it is the responsibility of our coaching staff to give them extra classes for not making the grade. Rafa would have told them exactly what he wanted, but I think that's just not Kenny's style.
