Defensive DALGLISH blasts: "It's disrespectful to us..."

Kenny Dalglish has given the clearest indication yet that Liverpool will not be making any new signings during the January transfer window.

In his press conference earlier this morning, Dalglish was once again overly defensive when asked simple questions about Liverpool's January transfer activity. He said:

"We've got an option to be active if we want to be active, but we said at the outset that we'd be quiet. If we needed somebody to bolster up, we could do it - but I said right at the outset, we don't.

We said right at the outset, if anything there will be very little (transfer activity). We're not really chasing after anybody that we want to bring in in January.

"It's a wee bit disrespectful to us after trying to be honest and saying there might not be much, that we get accused of not being active."

"I don't think it is unusual when we said at the start we would not be very busy. I think it's unusual when people try to invent things, get it horribly wrong and then ask us to justify it".

I know I keep going on about this but why does Kenny have to turn everything into an 'us vs. them situation? Look at the language: 'Accused' - 'Disrespectful' - there's no need for it, especially in response to the most innocuous of questions.

Plus, none of the Journos present made any kind of accusation that Liverpool were 'not active'.

It's January - obviously, there is going to be speculation about transfers! This should be expected, and the Press has the right to ask about it.

And let's remember, Dalglish was responding to questions from a local Liverpool reporter, not some London hack.

Dalglish concluded that he's more than happy with his current squad:

"It's work in progress for us. We'll just keep doing what we're doing, and the boys will keep working as hard as they can, and we'll see where we go. We've been happy with what they (the players) have done since August".

If Liverpool don't buy anyone in January, is the squad good enough to finish 4th?

  1. It would be stupid for Liverpool if they don't buy because their is serious lack of quality in their attack and with current squad i don't see Liverpool finishing in top 4. Liverpool need a quality winger and a striker.

  2. Jamie Kenny is following Shankly's footstep here i guess. don give a damn bout others n only think bout ur team. Shankly blasted Everton to bits. hope Kenny doesnt do the same else the FA will be hoggin on his neck... :)

  3. dont think we re good enough for top 4 finish, for the simple reason that we are not scoring enough goals, we cant always rely on captain Marvel to get us where we want to finish, Downing & Carroll have been way below par for £55mil.

    ReplyDelete
  4. surely he can se we need a striker?
unnless suarez is spending hours practicing his finishing during his suspension.
i'd move for another wide man too.

  5. Assuming Kenny isn't keeping his cards close to his chest, I agree with Lion Heart - we MUST get a striker and a winger who likes to cross.

  8. Kenny is trying to prove his buys are good enough by not buying anyone. big mistake imo. He waffles far too much and has a siege mentality. he should shut up and get us playing well, and consistently.
if we don't buy anyone, 4th is out of the question, and kenny will be sacked, should we not achieve 4th.

he should be able to see why we need a proven finisher.his stubbornness is reminding me of rafa.
if stevie gets another injury we're i trouble.

  11. I think Kenny is spot on in telling the journos off given the unfounded stories that are circulating - The us vs. them is a clever tactic to bring unity within the club and clearly tell the current players that he has belief in them. If only some of the fans commenting here had half of his belief instead of being genetically prone to kneejerk reactions at every given opportunity. The current squad is more than good enough to get us 4th spot -  we are currently 6th and we haven't hit the heights yet, Stevie is back, Henderson is finding some form, Downing and Carroll have just scored, Bellamy is on fire, Skrtl and Agger boss the meanest defence in the PL, and we just beat Man City away to set us up nicely for the return leg. Doesn't sound too bad considering we're only halfway through the season and it's Kennys first full one after returning. Have faith my fellow reds, we will return to the summit. YNWA

  12. Kenny's waiting the end of the season for a complete review of team's performances, looking to high and lows, strenghts and weaknesses of side, in order to reinforce the team for next campaign. This is not unusual for a great manager Who has a long term view. In addition, January transfer window is inflated, stupid and totally non sense: the summer is the right time to get a bargain.

  13. It's not possible to sort any problem with the "spend money now and spend much money as you can!!" strategy

  14. I'm sorry to deny your expectations to see another manager sacked in three years, but Kenny Dalglish's contract runs in three years, and He will stay in charge. If Kenny's place was under a real threat, then He would spend all the money to save his job. He's following a long term strategy because He needs that his job is safe.

  15. Better a Dalglish press conference than 'Appy 'Arry cracking lame gags and his drink addled  journo mates laughing on cue. These buffooons are no friends of Liverpool FC and never were. They couldnt wait to put the knife in over the Suarez case. They are currently running a vendetta against the club so why should Dalglish launch a charm offensive to woo these goons ?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Right, so the in-house journalist for LFC TV is 'no friend of Liverpool FC'?! This guy is employed by the club, and always asks most of the questions at LFC press conferences. Despite this, Dalglish got on his back too. He is way too defensive for no reason, and it reflects badly.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Downing and Carroll have just scored against a non premiership side. ok after that what did they do against a weak man city side, performed like have done so far this season, very poor!! So u reckon we dont need a winger and a striker!! Where have u been for the last 6 months, in a fish bowl. I agree its work in progress and its kennys 1st season, but its clear we need to invest as it will give us a better chance of getting 4th spot and if we take a MASSIVE risk and see how it goes for remainder of the season this could determine the next 2-3 years for us. Are u fully aware of the implications of us not qualifying??? Players will leave, will be unable to attract top.names etc. Kenny has to man up and admit some mistakes ref his signings and put them right asap!!

  18. Jaimie, it is Dalglish and his manner with the press. Some people like it, some don't like it. He's always been like this and is not going to change his way just because some overly sensitive blog-writers read too much into his words.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Majestic Spot On. Finally I hear sensitive thoughts, from a true Loyal Supporter.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's not overly sensitive. Look at the last few months and the overriding attitude associated with the club is one of defensiveness, belligerence, and unreasonable pigheadedness, and much of that is down to Dalglish, his manner, and how he has handled things.

The press don't need to be on Liverpool's case so much, but they are because Dalglish hands them the opportunity on a silver platter.

In today's press conference, it was the club's inhouse journo who got it in the neck, and all he asked was whether KD planned to bring anyone to the club in January.

Given it's the january transfer window, is that not a reasonable question? Is it not a question that should be expected?

Dalglish went on about being 'accused' of 'not being active', but nothing of the sort was mentioned in the press conference, and no in the media has accused him of being 'not active' in the transfer market.

It's needless defensiveness that serves no purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Plus, the press are picking up on it, which creates negative articles like this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2080811/Patrick-Collins-Kenny-Dalglish-needs-home-truths-flattery.html

  22. We don't need a winger and a striker... we need 2 strikers! I am really hoping we sign Luc Castaignos. He looks like the perfect partner for Suarez. We will also need a good partner for Carroll.

Kenny likes his lop-sided 4-4-2/4-3-3 where we use 1 winger who operates as a forward and another who tucks into midfield. Henderson is pretty much reprising Ray Houghton's role, or how Rafa played Gerrard in '05. We have 2 senior wingers already in Maxi and Downing, and they seldom play together. Our other 'winger' will always be a midfielder(Henderson) or striker(Kuyt/Bellamy/Suarez).

I also think the management and the club has accepted that not being in the top 4 is a very distinct possibility, hence Gerrard signing a new contract, as an alternative means to attracting ambitious players. Furthermore, if we do win the league cup, we will be playing in Europe, even if it's not champions league. Both Man U and Man City are now playing in the Europa league, it can't be that shabby!

  25. I have watched the interview and I don't see or hear any problem it's just like all the other press conferences this season cool at the start, good point about a sliding tackle that players studs are always going to be out, sternness about the transfer talk last week that Carroll had been sold, Carroll mentioned again but Kenny pointed out it was a TEAM performance, reporter talks about inconsistency but we have won our last 2 at home .Same questions Kenny points out but still gets asked them we are a TEAM ,consistency and Andy Carroll! Good job Stevie signed a new contract something else to talk about, the silence between questions says it all no one with nothing new to talk about no creative questioning. Kenny is a Scots man who don't take fools likely Paul Lambert and Fergie are the same stern to the point but you get journalists and reporters asking the same bloody questions every week what must he think?
    Funny old game, aye Kenny!

    ReplyDelete
  26. So what if they ask the same questions - that's what journalists do. Get over it already. The same issues arise over and over in football, and KD gets paid to represent LFC to the media. He should he doing a better job in that regard (IMO)

  27. Wonder where the goals are going to come from

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, I do agree with your stance that unnecessary defensiveness only makes the press dig more. But in that article someone called Patrick Collins is trying to teach Dalglish how to deal with the press with humility, etc., and brings example of his handling the whole Hillsborough thing.
Well, we all know about the press coverage of the Hillsborough tragedy, and it is clear that Dalglish never trusts the press ever since.
He doesn't make things easier for himself by confronting the press. But you can understand him in a way, especially given the totally one-sided and agenda-driven coverage of the latest events.  He doesn't like these hyenas and doesn't want to hide it.
They want to hear some criticism of Andy Carroll from him. Well... they'll have to wait long.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Which side are you actually on eh Jamie? Are you a closet Manc or something? Or are you a journo whipping boy like Evra and go crying about some 'hurtful' words - shame...here's a tissue. I've been watching the interviews for years, and man the journos, whether ours or others, really do ask the most bloody inane questions AND half the time they get Kenny to repeat himself at least three times in the SAME bloody conference - how stupid are these chaps - I mean even some kids come up with more creative and positive questions.

Kenny is our spokesman, but he is not here to make journos look good - he is primarily here to succeed with the team - I would also get annoyed lilke he has - I mean journos who are IN the industry, and are at the SAME conference, surely brains and ears are open and should know by now not to ask stupid repetetive questions, and don't ask rumour questions where the man, who is old enough to be your father or grandfather has already told you the honest truth and not some other b.s. - respect IS lacking.

Sorry Jamie, but even footie talkshow hosts appreciate that Kenny doesn't suffer fools and respect him for it - that's his style - if ya can't stand the heat... Also, you are always critising KK about this issue - so I need to ask - have you achieved what he has as a player never mind just an LFC player? Are you a legend? Have you ever managed a Premiership side? Have you won anything in Football - at all? Please mate, have a little respect - that's what we do - I know you are trying to be objective etc. but really some of the stuff you say is what I expect on a Manc site - even the Blues have respect for KK.

To end - I appreciate your views usually, just a shame you taint it with some like these.

    I don't.

  34. I agree with you mate, we cannot rely on gerrard playing every game and scoring for us, risky business, we need options and apart from bellamy i cannot see many others in the team. i agree jan is not a good time but we need to give ourselves the best chance of getting 4th spot otherwise it will be huge setback for us. If only some of our summer signings had shown more passion and class we would not be having this conversation about jan transfers!!! Some people just dont get it how important it is for us to get that 4th place. whats the point waiting till the summer when we dont

  36. Kenny Dalglish IS UNDER PRESSURE hence the reaction.
    Not that complicated

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jaimie who knows whats going behind the scene?
My opinion is and rightly so KD is under pressure to get Andy Carroll scoring from the owners.....the fans...and the Journos.
So yes your right he's defensive.

    ReplyDelete
  38. KK is exactly the same with the press as he was when he was winning everything back in the late eighties as manager.
He is probably sick of the pointless stories being made up about Carroll returning to Newcastle, the press have always got an agenda and 1 question leads to another and even the Club Journalist will have a job to do.
Atleast KK does not act in the arrogant and disrespectful manner the way Fergie conducts himself.
Fact of the matter is any club need to be desperate to do business with the market in January. Striker and a winger I keep hearing, Like who? From a club out of Champions league? Again, people wanting to rush into 2nd rate signings and make mistakes we made continually throughout the Benitez and Houllier era.
After the mess we have landed in with a player like Andy Carroll not suiting our style of play we would be mad to rush into signings in January.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm sure you're right, Septimus. KD made his bed re Carroll, and now he has to lie in it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Scally it's one thing to sign a player that's not good enough but here's where your argument falls down.

1)The Managers JOB is to make sure the people he BUYS DO suit he style of play

    2) I would argue that Benetiz when given money bought much better than when he was like some starving urban fox scavenging around the bargain bins...Torres is testimony to that.

Having said that KD is consistent in his clear dislike for the media and as a previous poster stated.
His reaction may be down to his experiences after the Hillsborough disaster.
That having been said again is worrying because there is ONLY ONE WINNER IN MANAGER VS PRESS.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 2 strikers...sorry dont agree, I think you're own your own their my friend as everyone, including past players, footballing pundits, state there's not enough quality from the wings or infront of goal, hence we need striker and a winger.  Downing and Kuyt not performed to the standard required, maxi, where is he theses days, so big question marks around your current evaluation of the squad.  Enrique and Johnson have been pretty much our wingers so far (now there's a thought) and have played out of their comfort zones.  However, did like your finish off, fair point!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. So what?  Who cares what the press think or write?  It doesn't make a blind bit of difference to how the team perform which, ultimately, is all that matters.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Kenny had 6 months to review the team last season (ignoring the time that he spent at the club prior to becoming manager) before going into this summer's transfer window.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Benitez had just extended his contract a year before he was sacked. Hodgson still had another year on his contract when he was sacked. Contracts don't mean much in football.

The owner's haven't said much (recently), but they did say that the expectation was at least to finish in the top 4 this year. For you to assume they'd be happy to invest so much money in the club for such a minimal return is a little naive (remember that with ffp kicking in and the relatively few high value players in our squad, the longer we stay out of the CL, the harder it will be to get back in from here on out)

Dalglish has had the time and money to get the club back on the right track to meet those expectations, and if he does fail then he deserves the sack. The idea that we should blindly hold faith in some long term strategy while other teams continue to pull away from is in the short term is ridiculous as far as I'm concerned.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Being 'loyal' and being a 'yes man' are two different things...

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm pretty sure that he's under pressure to get the club to deliver, not any particular player. If Carroll didn't score again all season and we won the league, it wouldn't be much of an issue.

As long as his signings continue to underwhelm AND the team continues to flounder amongst the also rans, then it's only right that he should be put under pressure though.

    ReplyDelete
  47. nope, asking for permission is not enough - you have to become a professional footballer and at the bare minimum eclipse the achievements of whoever you may talk about before you are allowed to have an opinion about football.

Just write down everything is being done as it needs to be done, we've been unlucky and next year will be our year. Leave any critical analysis to the likes of Shearer, Redknapp et al...

    ReplyDelete
  48. It's arguable that our players do care and that it is affecting their performance though, so yes, it does matter - all of this is just creating a negative air around Liverpool, and our club is clearly not thriving from it

    ReplyDelete
  49. You did read and hear about the Andy Carroll story? You write about FAKE transfer stories but expect Kenny to have a laugh! When the press were reporting he had been just about sold back to Newcastle?
I think you need to get over how Kenny is or IS N'T in press conferences! Yes he can get his back up but he also has a smile on his and puts some humour in as well in press conferences but that's to boring and positive for you!
If you don't mind me saying!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Don't think we need to spend in jan we are out of title race which is disappointing very disappointing , but we are 3 pts off 4th our home form has been awful , so with just a little improvement at home 4th is well do able

    ReplyDelete
  51. But take today's press conference, effectively Dalglish is saying that we don't need any more players because the ones we have are good enough.  Whether or not you agree with him, surely the players  like to hear that their manager has faith in them, and this can only help their confidence.  In my view, the manner in which he says it is neither here nor there.  Any 'negative' stories resulting in the way Dalglish talks to the media tend to be about the way he talks to the media, and aren't about the players at all.

    ReplyDelete
  52. For a Liverpool Fan I find it strange that you don't understand Kenny's philosophy? Kenny praises the team as one and criticises the team as one he rarely singles out one player for praise or criticism, like with the interview today about Carroll and his City performance he praised the team, why his Kenny going to change his Liverpool Way to please the few?
Kenny is trying to get them to play as a team on and off the pitch with the way he talks about them, in stilling team work like the defence already are operating like the way they play the ball out of defence is brilliant including Strkel who showing he can play football and not a long ball merchant!
Work in progress like Kenny said and so is Kenny with him getting back into management and all the hype and crap that is put into football now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Have you watched ALL of the press conference?

    ReplyDelete
  54. i perso nally find daglish's press conferences predictable-
we're happy with where we're going etc
we'll do our work and not worry about anyone else etc

same evry week,if he finds it that boring or intrusive let clark or keen sit in now and again and we might get a bit more insight.
kenny spent 35mil on a striker who isn't doing what he was bought to do.obviously there's going to be questions asked.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Exactly.As Bob Paisley said:

"One of the things I keep reminding players is that when you're lost in a fog, you must stick together. Then you don't get lost. If there's a secret about Liverpool, that's it."

    ReplyDelete
  56. We do need another forward player but they will only be mistakes if we fail! But seeing no trophies are won in January we will have to wait!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Best team unity I have seen in Liverpool FC for years! Have we had any player coming out moaning?

    ReplyDelete
  58. OK Jay, so if the owners decide that Kenny aint up for the job then who exactly will they replace him wit at this point of time? The next manager will have the exact same problem of getting the team back on track. The replacement will also need something called time, not just one year FFS.

Who do you suggest we replace Kenny with then?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Just like those who were being loyal to the previous manager even if he did not win anything in is last four seasons. I get what you are saying. huff, huff, huff...

    ReplyDelete
  60. What you see is what is what you get, Kenny does not give anything away and he will not change his ways for anyone. Even if there had to be conflict between him and players, owners or whoever it may be then he will keep it behind closed doors WHICH IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.

In recent years our club has been dragged through the mud by previous owners and managers AND IT MADE OUR CLUB LOOK LIKE A CIRCUS.

January is always a difficult time to make decisions on signings, I will however admit that we need a top front man but with no CL at the moment it is unlikely that we will find the right player. Maybe we should go for a loan move of those that are available? Getting into the CL is the key and is also not out of the question yet.

We need Carroll to start firing on all cylinders and maybe with regular apps he might just find some scoring form. He has not had a proper run of matches and now is the right time for Kenny to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I didn't say that Daglish's job should be up for consideration at this point in time. I said that it should be if he fails to secure a CL spot at the end of the season.

18 months (plus the time spent behind the scenes at Anfield) and full support in the transfer market would be enough to fairly demand results.

I'd advocated a move for Riijkaard as soon as he became available, when Benitez left and again when Hodgson was failing. Everybody said how foolish unrealistic I was being. Before seeing him go to Galatasary and then disappear into the middle east. Likewise those fans who suggested Pelligrini, before he ended up at Malaga.

There are PLENTY of managers that could and would jump at the opportunity to do a job for Liverpool, just as there are PLENTY of players around that could and would do a job for the club given the chance. And just because they haven't been given the opportunity to prove themselves as yet, that does not prove that they would be incapable of doing matching the success of more reknowned/established counterparts.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Riijkaard knows nothing about the English game. Even Mancini, spending hundreds of millions still is not looking guaranteed for for the EPL trophy.

We had our most disasterous season in many years in 2010, Rafa's last season and Kenny did quite well last season. I would give Kenny time, just like all our other manager except for Hodgson has been given, it is the right thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Kenny is defending the players, he would have been watching players come to Liverpool and fail for the last 20 years with not living up to the hype and pressure of playing for Liverpool we want players who are going to be successful for 5 to 10 years not 2 or 3 years.

    ReplyDelete
  64. How do you know what Riijkaard knows about English football? And what does that even have to do with anything anyway?? Football is football, and even in the unlikely event that he knew absolutely nothing about English clubs, playing styles and players, I'd much rather have seen him come and bring in his style and the best available players from across Europe for the £100m that has been spent than on the best players that England had on offer.Riijkaard speaks English and had/has a great standing in the game and proved himself to be a much better manager at Barcelona than Mancini at Inter. Barcelona were in a worse position to LFC when he came and turned them into the best team around again by looking around and picking up top quality players with the money made available to him, whereas Mancini had his titles handed to him and flopped in Europe every year.As I said, by all means Dalglish should be given time, but 18 months should be enough to get us back into the top 4. Moreover, with all the support he's had in the market we should be looking to improve on the results he delivered upon arrival last year, not starting all over again and comparing his team to the worst aspects of Hodgson & Benitez's tenures again

    ReplyDelete
  65. i dont care wat he says to the press, they are mainly scum. and they have hardly been respecfull to liverpool over the years.
i like kennys interviews, wats he supposed to be able to do?? make broken promises and get hammered for it. they just twist things to suit there headlines. its so obvious its been like it for years.
kenny is a top football man in all aspects, he is not a tv presenter for lfc!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thank you for sharing the above interview!
Kenny is rather stubborn and it works the best for him, imho
