Ex-LIVERPOOL star admits: "You’d have to say he’s a waste of money..."

Hot on the heels of Liverpool legend Jan Molby claiming Andy Carrol would never make it Anfield, former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has argued that the former Newcastle man is a 'waste of money'.

In his weekly column for The People, Collymore - who formed a lethal partnership with Robbie Fowler between 1995 and 1997 - expressed some sympathy for the struggling striker, but ultimately concluded that Kenny Dalglish wasted a huge chunk of Liverpool's money:

"That £35m was a huge sum for Liverpool to spend but that is beyond the player’s control and all he can focus on is hitting the net.

"It simply hasn’t happened for him yet, though. Obviously there is pressure and it could take a couple of years before he hits top form.

"As a forward at a club like Liverpool you have the whole history of the Anfield team on your shoulders.

"I hope he can turn it around and if anyone can get the best out of him you’d think it would be Kenny Dalglish.

"One day he’ll eventually shake off the price-tag – but for now I’m afraid you’d have to say he’s a waste of money".

Collymore is a perfect example of what a big, tall centre-forward can do at Liverpool; he had pace, power, skill, great touch, confidence on the ball, and top finishing ability.

Carroll should be playing like Collymore did for Liverpool, but he seemingly just doesn't have the basic skills to carve out a successful career at Anfield.

Having said that, with Suarez facing a ban, Carroll will inevitably get a run in the team, and I genuinely hope he does well.

  5. collymore was a sulk, a misfit, let the club down by REFUSING to play for the reserves and going AWOL he was only a success when he played in the lower divisions . Carroll has just got on with it and just wait he will come good. He has the right attitude unlike Collymore who seems to make a living these days knocking LFC and its players. Dont forget the Angel Collymore also beats up women and goes dogging in his leisure time. A disgrace really to his fellow men, and he has the audacity to slag suarez.........

  8. we must loaned out him so that he can get regular playing time and overcome his problem and get his form return.

  9. Jass the issue with Carroll is abilty, not form.  He's one dimensional, slow weak in possesion and to tound things off can't head it.  If I didn't know better I'd swear he's getting one on one coaching sessions with Morientes.

  12. carroll may have the right attitude but so did Heskey.  We paid top dollar for an unproven striker in his second top flight season (the most difficult season for any 1st season over achiever) and are now paying the price.  If we want to play modern attacking football it is clear to most people in the football know that there's no place for old fashioned center forwards.

  13. When we signed Carroll last season did he look a poor buy? Not sure what has happened to him this season looks weak and lost any sense of control of a football.
Collymore knows himself what it's like to struggle and fail in the end at Liverpool the pressure of playing for Liverpool was to much for him and jumped ship when he was dropped.

  15. what the lad needs is games lots of them , every time he plays its like he's on trial , tell him he's gonna play from now till the end of the season with luis or bellers when luis is out , he is a good player but he needs to build understandings with team mates and confidence , with games it will come , but in for the odd game here and there its just making it harder for the lad he is a good player and could be a great asset , good luck andy

  16. Great couple of seasons though to start of with he wasn't a failure at the start but he does think losing in a FA Cup Final and finishing third as being successful at Liverpool which in the end shows he had no idea what was expected in his BIG money signing in that we wanted to win the league!
Collymore give Carroll some idea how to suceed in where you went wrong and that Carroll doesn't end up ill if he fails you would expect Collymore to be more supportive and not put a young professional player down seeing Collymore has a continual fight against depression.

  17. Yep, sadly we've known this for some time with regards to Carroll.
However does us no good harping on about it.
All we can do is support him as best we can and hope he bangs a few in for us, we're gonna need him to.

  18. Even with Suarez banned I wouldn't start with Carrol, he didn't earn the right to be a starter.. Bellamy up top by himself would be more effective
    with Gerrard just behind him.

  19. Collymore himself was a waste of money and wasted his talent....

We need to play to Carroll's strengths. He would be setting the Premier League on fire if he was with Spurs or Man Utd

We need fast right footed winger to play on right wing to service him

  20. he is just a piss head, thats whats wrong with him.

  21. Dalglish didn't buy him. Comolli did.

  22. The fact that Newcastle wanted less 15 million pounds to whatever price we sold Torres for ,is not to be concluded that Caroll is a waste of money. I am no Caroll fan but the signing was made in good intention. Why didn't anyone say the same when we paid hefty price for Sean Dundee 20 more years ago and turn out to the turkey of the year.

  23. Comolli didnt buy him. He merely suggested. John Henry and Tom Werner did with their cheque. LOL.

  24. Read the headline and then the actual comments of Collymore. He is saying it will take time but FOR NOW he is not good enough _ I hate misleading headlines

  25. We got a good deal, babel+torres for suarez+carroll.
    I know who id have!

  26. Dundee didn't cost 35million that's why

  27. I do wonder, what were Dalglish and Commolli thinking when they bought Carroll? With all their experience shouldnt they have foreseen this? In my humble opinion, the template of the modern striker was set by Ronaldo (Brazil). The truly modern number 9. Tall, Skillful, Power and PACE. If we looked at Torres, great example. Eto'o another great example. Ibrahimovic as well. A young player can lack in one attribute like power, but if you're young and you can build yourself up like Ronaldo did(he was skinny) thats okay. But you can never build up your skill and pace. That my fellow LFC friends, is not possible. Now if we look at Barcelona, they probably realised there was no player in the world that fit that template now and they changed their system a bit to incorporate this false number 9 strategy. Even Guardiola makes the odd huge blunder in transfers, but when he realises his mistake he accepts it, moves the player on,moves the team on. So i hope Dalglish can find the right way forward with this.

  28. I am a Newcastle Fan ,Although the Price Tag makes Caroll overrated , he is not as bad as he is projected , his aerial prowess is a real Handful, Liverpool Should be slowly looking to incorporate him , and overload the box with onrushing midfielders ( specially the likes of gerrard and Adam)and play for the thirdl ball , with AC winning the intial headers , that ll give him a lot of assists , that ll bring back  the confidence and eventually the goals , and Dont forget he has a thunderous left his goal against liverpool for NUFC proves that .
Good luck to andy and Liverpool
    Thanks for the 35m
