David Fairclough slams Roy Hodgson for 'restricting' young Liverpool star...

Liverpool legend David Fairclough believes that the 'penny may have dropped' now for midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who enjoyed a very productive loan spell at Blackpool before being called back to Anfield by Kenny Dalglish as cover for Lucas Leiva.

Speaking on LFC TV, Fairclough argued that Shelvey's recent loan spell might just be the 'spark that was needed' for his development, and that he might be less restricted working under Kenny Dalglish:

"I think Kenny seems more in Shelvey than Roy did. He was harnessed under Roy Hodgson, and he was restricted in where he could go. He did break out from that at times, but Roy still wanted him to play a more disciplined role.

Liverpool reserve Team manager Rodolfo Borrell recently noted that loan spells can sometimes be counter-productive for young players, but the Blackpool loan was undoubtedly a good decision, and Fairclough agrees:

"I think there were one or two people questioning whether he was good enough. He's gone down to the Championship, and although it was only short-lived, I think he made an impression.

"I think he will have learned from that experience; things didn't go completely the way he wanted [when he first arrived at Liverpool] and the penny might have dropped a little bit now. The loan spell might be the spark that he's needed"
.

It's kind of ironic that when Liverpool were struggling to score goals, Shelvey was banging them in for Blackpool (!) If he gets a chance in the first team, hopefully he'll be able to continue his goalscoring form for Liverpool, though we should't expect much as he's still only 19.

  1. Shelvey is most probably Rafa's best young signing so far he has got drive, strong for his age and is n't scared to show what he his capable of on the pitch with his shooting and passing. He showed in the second half of last season he wouldn't let the manager down and deserves a chance in the team.
