LINE-UP vs vs. Newcastle: Maxi dropped AGAIN?

Despite scoring in the last league game, Maxi Rodrigues has been dropped AGAIN for tonight's game against Newcastle.

Full Liverpool line-up:

Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Skrtel, Agger, Adam, Henderson, Spearing, Downing, Carroll, Bellamy.

SUBS: Doni, Maxi, Kuyt, Gerrard, Carragher, Shelvey, Kelly.

I'm sorry, but continually dropping players who actually SCORE is a ridiculous policy.

  1. calm down buddy dalglish said maxi wont be playin sum games due to his age same with bellamy. i guess maxi is being saved for d game against city which is on 3rd Jan!

  2. Come on, Jaimie, Henderson is obviously far superior to Maxi. With that firm conviction in mind I also predict Carroll will score a hat-trick.

  3. par for the course - Kenny's up for another draw, and any continutiy would ruin those hopes.
    Prediction: 2-1 Newcastle

  4. With Spearing and Henderson in the line up that is a compliment to Newcastle, despite us being at home KD looks like he is packing up the middle instead of penetration in the final third.

How things have changed in just a few short years.

  5. Well done Stevie G

Thanks for glossing over Carroll's finishingWell, well, we still are a one/two-man team yet again, despite £100m spent.....great(!)

  6. Andy Carroll was truly terrible and I note the amount of players Enrique and Henderson having a go at him for not trying.
You can swing crosses in all day long the boy Carroll couldn't score in a brothel.

  7. Phew, luckily for us Newcastle were pants, so we got away with carrying the likes of Carroll and Henderson, as well as still having Stevie G around to save us.

  8. TACTICAL GENIUS........AND IT WORKED!!! Must sting.

  9. Bullshit......Today he looked dangerous as soon as SG started giving him decent service. He has not had that all season so understandably hes a little rusty.

  10. For Christ's sake, Maxi isn't fit enough to play every game. Same with Bellamy. The fact they still score more or less everytime they play shows they are being managed properly. A shame they can't though, they're excellent buys and to think they were both free (shedload of wages I imagine though).

I thought Carroll, finishing aside, wasn't too bad. Looked fitter, stronger in the challenge and quicker on the ground. Movement is still not up to scratch and occasionally sloppy in posession but not bad at all. If he wants to be a long-term success then obviously, he needs to play much better, lightyears better in terms of finishing and movement, but as an isolated performance, or as a sign of progress, it was not bad. Encouraging even. The team seems to have learnt not to just throw it at his noggin every 6 seconds or so.

Adam needs to pick his game up with Gerrard back. He looked to have cracked good consistent form after the Chelsea game but then went on to solidify his current post-Lucas slump against Wigan.

Thought Spearing had his best game since last season. More natural a defensive mid than Henderson (though I think it is neither of their natural positions). Better than Adam today for me. Did well in the 50-50s and made a few smart passes.

Also- what a clearance by Skrtel. Incredible. He's grown so much having calm Agger rather than screaming Carra beside him. He's playing his best football since his first six months with us. Agger won us the decisive free kick too. Harsh on Newcastle though, not a free kick.

Johnson had a good one today and I think Downing looked that bit more confident. He needs shooting practice though. Glen could do with some too. Enrique, solid, as always. Best left-back in the league by a good distance this season. Freak goal unfortunate. Maybe Johnson/Downing should have gotten closer to the crosser.

Henderson needs to do better. He was playing the attacking role in a 5 man midfield, a position that can be very flattering but he lacked the drive of a Gerrard or the vision of a VDV. Seems more like a box-to-box player with his engine but he needs to improve his range of passing and movement if that is to be his future. Set up Gerrard at least.

  11. Dangerous??? you've been watching the wrong game! Gerrard put it on a plate for him, yet he still misses. He nearly prevented bellamys second goal. Luckily he made no contact with the ball.

  12. I think we are playing better football under Dalglish. Just one thing mystyfies me is why he keeps playing Carroll and henderson.. Henderson has taken Kuyt out of the team..LOL! And carroll gets a look in ahead of Maxi, who has scored goals for fun.

  13. I thought the big lummox confused Krul by running in front of him for Bellamys second goal,so if were being kind he sort of assistsed the goal.Gerrard is different class and when he was putting chances on a plate for the big lummox he still couldnt take them. This surely shows Dalglish would have been better buying real quality who make a difference.Adam to me is not fit to lace Gerrards boots and he knows it he is a greedy get he could have played Carroll in but kept going and going until he lost the ball, championship player.Im sure Ferguson couldnt stop laughing when he said Adams left foot was worth £10m alone,he definitely got one over on the King there.

  14. carroll has a first touch like voronin.
truly laughable that he was deemed lfc standard by kenny.he wouldn't get in the current newcastle side.
we were poor tonight, downing is always looking for a runner overlapping,he never chooses to take a man on and stretch the game.
enrique and johnson look far more natural in wide positions than him.
big transfer window coming up for daglish.
let's hope we sign better than henderson, carrol and downing.
as fans we deserve much better.

  15. Why all the negativity? We did win if you hadn't noticed! The seasons not been brilliant of course but we are in touch with 4th spot without playing well which can't be that bad. Arsenal completely rely on van persie (who is due an injury) and Chelsea are no better than us. If we take more of our chances we have a great chance. I'm sure someone will be brought in in January to help out too. Everyone complains about no youth players coming through but then get on the back of the likes of Henderson and Carroll. Both did alright tonight and Carroll clearly needs a run of games before being judged which he hasn't had yet. Even the he's come close to scoring many times. Try supporting the team instead

  16. definately needs to incorporate a few stepovers and tricks. as a winger he should know how to implement them

  17. Downing and Carroll both were terrible.  Both lack skills and look certain to be bad signings with low resale value.

  18. Very accurate, couldn't agree more with you.

  19. Its known in and around anfield that Maxi has fitness problems (keeping the level) and cant play every game. Maybe you'd know that if you were ever there!

  20. I wasn't talking about goals, talking about the impetus and the drive that makes the team play well. Despite £100m spent in the summer, its only really Gerrard and Suarez that are truly good enough for a club of our stature in midfield/attack. Several years ago when people were saying  we rely too much on Gerrard. It wasn't for his goals but the drive, the burden, the inspiration he gave. So I'm not sure why your banging on about how the goals are spread out, in relation to my point about one/two man team. Odd, really.

  21. Totally pants in front of goal against Newcastle. Its finishing (lack of, more like) like this that costs us points and nearly did today.

  22. I felt his best games at Sunderland were on the wing such as the game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He has a great cross on him from the wing, really does. I just don't think he has the intelligence or the subtlety to play a central midfield role.

  23. For a club of Liverpool's stature, its not about 'just getting by'. We have standards and so far, they aren't being met. Add that to the expectancy that comes with spending £100m on a few players. Sorry, if we should just sit by and watch mediocrity fill the side just because we have been lucky enough to be in touching distance of 4th place. This is Liverpool, ffs.

  24. Agreed. The boy has pace, stamina and tricks galore. He could very well be our Nani. Only problem is he doesn't make himself available enough or seem to want the ball that badly. Can't really see the game from deep either. Shelvey would be much better suited as a CAM.

  25. Both fair points by you two, but it is still early days for him. I don't think his position is settled. He doesn't look like he has the belief to play right midfield for me, even moreso than Downing who seems reluctant to beat his man, but if Glen gets down the wing like tonight, then cutting in could be a good option for him and us. He'll offer good cover to Glen as well since he puts a shift in.

    Time will tell.

  26. "Getting by" is relative. I think he meant "getting by" by our own standards, however, I think we aren't and we're in fact hard done by. We have the options, we have the creativity, we've got the squad depth. Indeed our 3 English signings have been somewhat disappointing, but they are visibly improving. I personally do not feel they are mediocre players, but it is evident they aren't playing to their potential. All 3 players could work on awareness of their teammates and their positions on the pitch and I believe we'll see the best of them in due course.

  27. Just as well! In the absence of Suarez and with Gerrard likely to get a key role, Maxi wouldn't be half as effective! Gerrard has to be surrounded by pacy forwards and Maxi is not pacy for all his intelligence and great movement. Gerrard's presence worked a treat for Carroll too, who got more dangerous touches than he would normally get in and around the 18 yard box, even if none eventuated in a goal.

  28. Be fair, he caused alot of confusion in dropping back towards the goal.  I will agree that it was a disheartening performance bar the odd touch here and there and the header against the crossbar.  I'm hoping it'll turn around over the next few games, not holding my breath, but hoping all the same..

  29. Well given the fact that your comment referred to Gerrard "glossing over
Carrolls finishing", I can see where Jevon was coming from. Even if he,
    like myself, misinterpreted your intention.

Good to see you're upbeat after a 3.1 victory over the team below us though!

  30. Gerrard with not only his goal but his overall impact took us to a more acceptable level against Newcastle.

I expect better from Liverpool, we're not a small club. So I apologise for not acting like we won the title or something because we won against Newcastle in that fashion and with performances like that from our £100m new signings.

Newcastle played like they feared us or something in the game...luckily for us but we still couldn't make it really count until a odd defending for the free kick and Gerrard substitution.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I get that, i'm just explaining how the misunderstanding was possible.

Who said anything about celebrating like we've won the title.  Nobodys falling over themselves in praise here, but there were certainly positives to take from the game.  There's no reason they can't be highlighted also.  I wasn't happy with that performance, far from it, but its atleast something to build on!!

  32. Absolute rubbish. Maxi has no fitness problem; that is a total myth. And perhaps you should stop overcompensating - it's always the people who go on about going to Anfield all the time that never actually go. I watch Liverpool live when I can, and that's quite often; I just don't ever feel the need to brag about it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Where is Mali341? He only seems to be able to leave comments when we do not win.

Did not see the match but we actually scored three and that was without Suarez and Maxi. Only time will tell if we are going to miss Suarez as much as some people think we will. Stevie G is back and please can he stay fit now!!! Well done to Bellamy for getting the other two goals.

4th still very much alive I would say. If we can build on this result and improve on our goal scoring even more then it will make a CL spot that much more gettable.

  34. Season ticket for 17 years in the lower cent mate and no myth, it's the truth! It's funny how someone runs a site about the reds and doesnt know a thing about them. Sad.

  35. How do you know? I expect the manager knows better than you.

    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11669/7400566/Dalglish-praise-for-Maxi

"Maxi is a very intelligent footballer. He knows how to play and he loves to play.

"He's not able to play in every game and we have to manage him as best we can. But when he does play he doesn't give you many bad performances. He's a real credit to himself and to his profession."

Seems very unlikely that Dalglish, or any manager, would publicly make these comments if they weren't true. Physiotherapy and the monitoring of players fitness is very advanced nowadays and I'm sure that Dalglish knows to listen to this kind of thing.

It isn't too big a problem, we just play Bellamy one game and Maxi the next.

  36. I'd be interested to see any *proof* that you have actually been to watch Liverpool play in the flesh recently.

I remember when you were supposed to be going to the game against Fulham that eventually got called off & you posted a whole piece about it.

    And yet nothing since then.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ok gloss so what do you expect right now from Liverpool? Yes we've spent £100 mill which is a hell of a lot and could have been better spent, no question. But it's not like the other top teams have not been spending cash too and the state we've been in since finishing second means we have fallen well behind. This is not the current managements fault of the curret owners and there is no question we are improving fast. It's not as simple as 'we are Liverpool', that doesn't earn you the right to be successful and the other top teams will all feel the same way with the money they've spent and the squads they have. Give the players a chance ffs!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Only so much we can blame our current failings on the past management. At the end of the day, it wasn't Rafa, Hicks, Parry, Gillett or Hodgson who spent £100m on the likes of Carroll, Henderson, Adams and Downing.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The failings of the team now are not the responsibility of the past owners and management. However the fact that we dropped behind our rivals instead of pushing on is. How can anyone deny it? The new management and ownership now have to close the gap again and we are doing that. Money has been spent, whether it could have been spent more wisely will become apparent but right now we are a lot closer to the top teams again than we have been since we finished second. With better finishing we could easily be In touching distance of the top of the table. Let's see what happens in the business end of the season before kicking off. When you think of the abuse players like Lucas, Johnson, maxi and skrtel got and now everyone sings there praises its laughable. We might be saying the same about downing, hendo and Carroll by the end of the season.
