Kenny Dalglish: We can't put too much pressure on Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard has shouldered the burden of being Liverpool's 'talisman' for years now, and when the chips are down, everyone seems to look to the captain for inspiration. Such over-reliance on Gerrard has arguably been a handicap at times, and with the team struggling to score goals, the pressure is once again on Gerrard to come in and solve the problem.

Kenny Dalglish spent 75m on Stewart Downing, Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson in the hope that they would provide goals, but with almost five months of the season gone, they've hit the target a measly three times between them.

Clearly, Gerrard's goals are needed, but Dalglish is determined to ensure that the weight of expectation doesn't drag him down, as he noted in his weekly press conference:

"Steven will help because he’s got goals, he’s got charisma and he’s got presence. He’s got everything but we can’t throw everything on to Steven.

“We can’t say Steven is coming back, he’s going to be the one to do this or that.

“He has only played 20 minutes. If we are going to be a one-man band then we have no chance"

I doubt that Gerrard will start the Newcastle game tonight, but like most fans, Liverpool legend Jan Molby hopes he does:

"I really hope Steven Gerrard starts tonight. It's great to see the skipper back fit and I'd like to see him in that free role behind Carroll.

"I would rather Gerrard played the first 65 minutes and then came off than started on the bench. We'll miss Suarez but with Gerrard back we should be able to cope".

  1. Gerrard's presence alone strikes fear for opposing teams. Play him if he is ready and don't rush him into it. Me, Ashfah loves Gerrard.

  2. dude, as a Liverpool fan i appreciate your views, but why do you always refer to yourself in third person like a gangsta?

  3. Playing Gerrard in out of position as a lone striker is more productive coz of his qualities than playing Carrol,Henderson and Downing put together as an attacking team for their sheer lack of qualities.

  4. As soon as Gerrard replaced Adam we became a real threat..with Adam in the team we will struggle unless we play a team with a useless midfield ..Adam is starting to cost us games now..

But then again we can pretend that he is awesome and better than Alonso

  7. poor andy carroll had to wait 60 minutes for gerrard to come on to get a decent cross into him, regardless of the missed opportunity to score, he looks like a man who hasnt been passed the ball for years. gerrard looks strong and cool headed on the ball as usual.class.
adams is struggling to do basic passing at the moment
downing is getting worse, shooting! and crossing are none existant and poor.
henderson looked like he didnt know where to be untill gerrard came on.
my point is, without gerrard tonight would we be looking at another draw.
bellamy brilliant, defence good, especially the full backs we played well over all

  8. Admittedly, Dalglish got us a donkey (Carroll) and a couple of mules (Henderson & Downing).

  9. We are undergoing a reconstruction and it takes time. Our fans need to be patient. We have not had worthy owners or executives for a while. We've had some good managers that have come close to bring the title. they were either nt given sufficient funds in 1 go or time. We have to remember that Alex Ferguson has been at Man utd for 25 yrs that wud probably imply that the technical staffs have been there for long as well. It took him 7 YEARS before he brought any silverware to the club. So plz be patient. No reconstruction is made overnight. Dalglish is the best person for the manager's position for LFC. Hope he gets sufficient time to make us the best again. Many new players have been brought in. Some have settled straightaway and proved 2 b excellent deals others not yet. Some have been expensive others have been really cheap. So plz PATIENCE !!!!
