GILLESPIE: "Jamie Carragher has no God-given right to get back in the team..."

Jamie Carragher was on the bench against Chelsea after recovering from a recent injury, and many fans will probably be expecting him to be restored to the starting line-up sooner rather than later. However, Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie has suggested that Kenny Dalglish may stick with the Daniel Agger-martin Skrtel partnership.

Gillespie has been impressed with Liverpool's defensive performance recently:

"Defensively, Agger and Skrtel have looked solid in all the games we've seen them play.

"Jamie's just coming back from injury, and he has no god-given right to get back int the side, even though his leadership qualities are special.

"I think he'll understand the reasoning behind that, but two clean-sheets speaks for itself".

I agree with Gillespie: why break up a successful partnership. Players should be played on merit, and right now, Agger and Skrtel deserve to be in the team.

Should they both start the Man City game. or should Carra return? I would stick with Agger-Skrtel.

  1. Carragher should have to work his way back in from behind Coates - so good luck to him in the League Cup!

  2. I agree its got to be Agger and Skrtel and at the back its a shame to say it but carragher's time is running out as a player for Liverpool.I still think he could be an important bit part player for us.

  3. This applies to all of our players, It's a bun fight for places now!!!!. It doesn't matter who you are, If you don't do the bizz then out you will go, KK has the squad to bin players unlike before!!!!

  4. It's a tough one - yes, LFC had two clean sheets; against WBA & the swans, not exactly blistering attacks, but the way the defence backed off against Chelski for that Sturridge goal, as well as for the cross to Ivanovich which brought such a great save from Reina; would that have happened if JC was in defence? I don't think it would.

  5. I think we should learn from the Chelsea goal (schoolboy error) and stick with agger and skrtel, or maybe play carragher aswell, with 5 at the back, maybe like the Chelsea game last season. I say this because I think City's attacking threat is maybe too strong and if we go toe to toe with them we may get smashed like United. We couldn't go toe to toe with Spurs so I think it would make sense.

  6. You don't think Carragher would've backed away from a player running at him with pace, in the same manner that Terry ran away from Johnson for our winner??

Or do you really believe that Carragher is/has ever been a dominant force in the air that would dominate Ivanovich (in a manner that wasn't seen when the same man was bulletting goals against us in recent years)??

Absence really must make the heart grow fonder...

  7. He's said many times that he'd rather play elsewhere than be a bit part player for us.

Coming from some players that attitude would be deemed as arrogant or selfish, but for some players it's deemed as a sign of leadership or determination I guess...

  9. My main point was the way the whole defence backed off for the two incidents I mentioned; but no, Carragher would have put a challenge in against Malouda one way or another - this is why Carragher is such a great leader in defence.

The problem with Ivanovich's header was not the challenge to the player, but the cross that reached him. It could & should have been prevented, but our defence again was backing off Drogba, who'd hardly had any touches in the game. It's fine to have a deep line, but when you do, you absolutely must commit into challenges. This is basic football

  10. since the totenham match liverpool have not let in more than one goal in any match, most of them matches jamie was playing, against chelsea liverpool did not defend very well that sturridge goal was dreadful defending. Jamie is still our best defender. we have defended well this season but the defence goes to sleep once and we are punished. for me our biggest problem is finishing off teams for example, Sunderland, manchester united, swansea and norwich all games we should have won as we had so many chances but only scored one. if we had won these 4 games we would be second above machester united. we need to improve in the later 3rd of the putch as we are defending well.

  16. I lke your comment, Gary Gillespie. Everyone should fight for a place in the team, even Gerrard and Torres is no exception.

  17. You clearly haven't been watching Carragher - his form as gone backwards for three seasons now. When Dalglish first came back we kept a successions of clean sheets without Carragher. Funny how without him again we've looked much more secure.

If you have been paying attention it is Carra, who backs away to the 18 yard box because like John Terry he has lost any pace he once had. He has been a liability as he has been at fault for the goals we conceded at Stoke (league) - he played Walters onside when all the other defenders had moved up and fouled for pen, the goal vs Bolton and Brighton. Even debutant Seb Coates was telling him to move up the pitch in the debacle at Spurs. Carragher missed the header from the corner vs Utd at home.

Time and tide waits for no man and I think it's way past time that he is a guaranteed starter. Agger and Skrtel was still only 26 years old each and they are the future.

  18. I think KK has realised that you play the best team available and not play on reputation.

Carra has seen his best days but can still do a job on a short term..a game or two in a row .

But his experience will help the youngsters coming through..he has been fortunate to have played under Houllier and Rafa to gain the knowledge.

  19. No use explaining that to him... Even if the article Jamie writes deals with financial meltdown, Kirk is gonna come out and blame Lucas for it. LOL

  20. Sturridge goal if you watched carefully could have been avoided if Charlie Adam had closed down Malouda... Charlie could have tackled Malouda well outside the box. But then once he entered the box twas alway going to be difficult... anyway Malouda's mis-kick found Sturridge.  I was just thinking if only Gerrard was there in place of Charlie, Malouda would never have gotten inside our box.
