Craig Bellamy and Maxi Rodrigues have spent more time warming the bench than playing this season, but both started against Chelsea on Sunday, and both played a vital part in an excellent Liverpool victory. Clearly, having Maxi and Bellamy in the starting line-up works, so Kenny Dalglish surely has to stick with them for the Man City game this Sunday...right?
Like many fans, I believe that:
* Where possible, a winning team should not be changed.
* Attacking players who score should never be dropped for the next game.
With huge price tags to justify, there's always the possibility that Carrol, Henderson and Downing will all come back into the team, but should they? What do you think?
I would be extremely disappointed to see Maxi or Bellamy dropped for the Man City game on Sunday. The players lots of time off in the intervening period, so it's not like Bellamy won't have enough recovery time. Maxi has barely played this season, so he'll be full of energy, and full of confidence after scoring against Chelsea.
The Suarez-Maxi-Bellamy triumvirate works perfectly for the type of football Liverpool want to play, and if players are genuinely chosen on merit at Anfield, then there's no reason to make changes on Sunday.
If keeping Maxi and Bellamy in the team means that 75m worth of talent has to continue warming the bench, then so be it.

I've made my opinions of Maxi (which have not changed at all after Sunday btw) perfectly clear, but if it was my call I'd allow him to continue for another game; if only to show players that they have to fight to keep their places in the team. I've said that Bellamy should've been starting from a few games back also so he'd be in too.
ReplyDeleteKuyt should still find himself relegated to the League Cup teams though...
i thought that since we would be home,it would be important to push Bellamy now to partner Suarez, play a 4-3-1-2 where Maxi would be alone behind them and Adam Kuy and lucas infront of the back 4.From end of last season,i always thought there would be continuity and the gradual introduction of new players because the likes of Maxi and Kuyt were scoring hatricks which could have only been good for the football club not for individuals.I too would be extremely disappointed.
ReplyDeleteIf you want a true vote i wouldnt advise not putting your own person feelings and opinions into the question. Especially like the 'Like many fans, I believe that:' bit.
ReplyDeletemaxi and bellamy did really well we looked more lively and threatening than in any other game this season , henderson looked good when he came on adam was good and involved in both goals , what did lucas do ? not a lot , play the same side against city but with henderson for lucas , lets have a go at them obviously if gerrard fit play him instead of henderson
ReplyDeleteAfter a Man of the Match performance and 2 goals from Jay Spearing in the reserve game today, does Spearing deserve a place in the team? Does he do Lucas' job but with a greater goal threat?
ReplyDeleteThere must not be any change to current set up. Maxi, Ballmey and souraz are capable of scoring they are best player for liverpool type of touch and move game. I think we must sold carrol, He is completely not a type of player which can fit in Liverpool set up. He is new castle type of player
ReplyDeleteYou're under estimating the destructive role Lucas played on Sunday. He continually frustrated the Chelsea attack and made some vital tackles. Henderson would be a liabilty from a starting role. I'd much rather him come on after Lucas anchors the midfield like on the weekend. Henderson would not have that ability and we have to keep a measure of security when looking to attack city at Anfield.
ReplyDeleteLeave it alone Kenny, same again and attack them like last season, with Carroll on the bench as a plan B!!!. City will attack so we can hit them on the counter with our pace, If we need to get men behind the ball, we can do that too!!!....4-2-3-1 for me.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see Dalglish shuffle again.

I think you have to fully respect Man City. They've scored more goals in their opening 12 games than anyone since Spurs in '62/'63. When Man U played City at home they dominated for the first ten minutes with a 4-4-2 and then faded badly. We don't want to make the same mistake
I think there's a chance we could see a partial repeat of the White Hart Lane a la game if we don't play a 4-5-1. A
It won't make for a pretty game but Spearing would be a great asset in breaking up Man City's passing game. Johnson on the right and Bellamy on the left would give us the pace on the flanks to attack and to cope with their potent attacking full-backs. Lastly, I'd love to see Adam play further up the field against City. He could break-up City's play further up the field, be closer to Suarez and the wide midfielders and he'd get more chance to try his shooting ability from the 18-30 yard range. I
The game at Stamford Bridge showed a long-overdue return to tactical flexibility from Dalglish and Clarke. We need to consider the opponents and pack the midfield to have a good chance against an excellent team this Sunday.
how did he we battered them in the first half and he did nothing , then the second half they got the better of us and he did nothing so he added nothing going forward and nothing defensively in the 2nd half he is a waist of space well a waist of a place we would be far better without him he keeps a decent player out week in week out
ReplyDeletewhat match were u watching
ReplyDeleteI like your suggestion it looks very good, as you say we are flexible now, City can be beaten, no doubts about it.
ReplyDeleteWe're talking about playing Man City here not some reserve side!
ReplyDeleteYou are trying to convert the "heads in the sand attitude" sect with this one. If Lucas scored seven goals in each match and even stood in and saved three penalties to boot these guys would still be attacking him week in and week out!
ReplyDeleteEcclestone as well when he came on two great goals one with a brilliant turn and finish and the other out paced the defence from the half way line and slipped it past the keeper could be our Sturridge.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone actually tell me what else Maxi contributed to the match except for one shot at goal which he scored?
ReplyDeleteMaxi is tactically more aware than most on the field and thats how he gets into goalscoring positions. Did you not see him making clever runs and almost get through on goal 3 times in the opening minutes?
ReplyDeletePeople who cant see the brilliance of Lucas need a b*tchslap I think...He leads almost every stat defensively and is still improving offensively.
Maxi did not make one tackle, he hardly had the pace to beat any player and he also did not make one cross.
ReplyDeleteSo again I ask what else did Maxi provide to our play other than his goal?
Can anybody actually answer the question besides saying he has game intelligence? What intelligence did he provide for the team other than a goal? Answer please...
Did n't Chelsea sub their defensive midfield player Mikel because he was n't having an influence on the game where as Lucas was tackling hard breaking up play taking no prisoners Ramiers,Luiz and Lampard all had a taste of it from Lucas new hunger in him on Sunday.
ReplyDeletelet maxi play again. give him chance. he already prove he is good player
ReplyDeleteFunny that people like you keep coming back to ask 'What did Lucas do???' Even after Lucas has been the one with most attempted and won tackles in the league. Last year he was the one who attempted and won most tackles not only in premier league, but the one in the top 4 European leagues including Spain, Italy and Germany as well.
ReplyDeleteCharlie Adam was responsible for two goals for us, but if you watched the match he was also the one who left Malauda into our box which ended up in being Chelsea goal... Now that's something Lucas would have stopped... instead of just jogging behind the attacker.
Ill take one shot on target and one goal from him every time
ReplyDeleteAnyone saying what does Lucas and Maxi do, must be blind or daft in the head!!!
ReplyDeleteAll Maxi did was score.................
ReplyDeleteWhat is the number one contribution possible in football, oh yeah, scoring a goal!!
Maxi has a knack of getting goals for us under Kenny, hope he gets more game time
Bellamy showed his class by laying the ball of for a tap in
Hopefully Bellamy starts anyway........
Maxi scores goals! This guy had been doing so well for Liverpool and was dropped by Kenny for no good reason. He comes back into the side and gives a goal! That is a big contribution considering Carroll and Torres can't find goals and Luis Suarez is not clinical(yet!).
ReplyDeleteHe is professional. Makes great runs. How often is he in goal scoring positions? Everytime! This guy is a superb squad player!
COME ON U MIGHTY REDS.................YNWA
ReplyDeleteyou like so many underestimate and undervalue lucas. He did well at breaking up the play and let adam go for hollywood passes and be attacking because adam knew lucas was covering for him. It would be suicide to play hendo instead of lucas against man city. I for one am very scared for the match and will hope we dont get thrashed like man u. But we will come through it no matter how much we lose by but i really hope we give em a good thrashing like last time
ReplyDeleteno lucas is far more effective defensively
ReplyDeleteremember without lucas against norwich. Complete disaster. The norwich players dominated midfield and were unfazed by our midfielders. Lucas gives us that cutting edge in the defensive mid area and is able to break up play really well. Without him norwich waved and flooded our defense and eventually scored. He comes back against swansea and does his job we keep a clean sheet
ReplyDeleteadam tries to break up play but gives away fouls in dangerous areas
ReplyDeleteheres an answer. would downing have scored that or even gotten into that position on the field. Is downing more effective than maxi. Is maxi better at scoring goals???? Is maxi a better overrall player than downing
ReplyDeletePlease dont associate lucrap with maxi...
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you kirk dale. After watching the match on sunday I was asking myself one question: "Did lucas play?" I was really pleased with the performance of our midfielders. Maxi scored a goal. Adam had a part to play in both goals and even henderson played brilliantly and his efforts may have led to a goal if the other idiot kuyt learned how to shoot properly. But lucas did not do anything that was worthy both defensively and offensively. As you said he is just a waste of space and place.
ReplyDeleteSpot on
ReplyDeleteMaxi has played 57 matches for LFC. He has scored 13 goals in that time. 6 of those goals came from 2 matches via hat tricks. Nothing seems to suggest that he will score on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteFunny how none of you can actually tell me (and I have asked quite a few times) what Maxi contributes to OUR GENERAL PLAY in matches?
Instead of asking us what a player liker maxi (who have scored countless goals and provided numerous assists since the return of kenny dalglish) contributes, why don`t you ask yourself what a player like lick-ass contributes besides his mere tackles and short useless passes?
