As a Liverpool player, club legend Steve Nicol was rarely on the losing side against Chelsea. Last week, he tipped his old club to beat the Blues 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, and as we saw, Nicol was proved right. After the game, the Scot described Liverpool's victory as 'absolutely perfect', but still felt that his old manager Kenny Dalglish made one small mistake during the game.
Nicol, who scored 6 goals against Chelsea during his Anfield career, noted:
"This was such a huge win even this early in the season. If Luis Suarez was on his game, Liverpool could've been out of sight at half time.
"I think Kenny looking back at the end of the year is going to see this game as a defining moment. It's proof that Liverpool are real challengers, especially for that Champions League spot".
Nicol admitted he was surprised by the players Dalglish picked fore the game:
"Tactically it wasn't to much of a surprise - I think the surprise was the changes in personnel. There was always the possibility that Bellamy could play, but throwing Max in just came from nowehere, and it worked"
Bellamy and Maxi both went off during the second half but Nicol argued that the changes should've come sooner:
"If there was one mistake that Kenny made it was he should've taken both of them [Maxi and Bellamy] off earlier, but as for as the first half of the game: absolutely perfect and spot on! Everybody did their job, and Liverpool were deservedly ahead".

Love Bellers and Maxxxxxxi!!
ReplyDeleteNicol says that starting Maxi and Bellamy was a tactical surprise and we should have been out of sight by half time yet then says we didn't take them off soon enough
ReplyDeleteContradiction
Not at all. Chelsea rejigged in 2nd half and we were getting over-run in midfield especially on the left. He's right. Should have made the changes earlier. Tempting fate by exposing Johnson on the left for so long. As soon as Henderson came on at about 75 minutes, Kuyt went back to support Johnson and we scored one and made one other good chance (the Kuyt miss).
ReplyDelete'Steve Nicol was rarely on the losing side against Chelsea' - well yeah, but KK has NEVER been on the losing side as manager against them. That just about says everything
ReplyDeleteNo contradiction at all. He was suprised Maxi started but admited it worked to such an extent that Liverpool should have gone in with a bigger lead at half time. However, in the 2nd half Chelsea pegged Liverpool backed and Nicol felt that substituting Bellamy and Maxi was the correct decision but would have made the change sooner.
ReplyDeletePLEASE EXPLAIN HOW YOU HAVE DEEMED THAT A CONTRADICTION.
Please don't jinx us!! :S
ReplyDeleteWe need to gamble sometimes, Nicol and Kenny's gamble this time paid dividends.
