POLL: Would you take Rafa Benitez back as manager when Kenny retires?

Rafa Benitez has stated several times over the last year that he would like to manage Liverpool again one day. Hopefully, Kenny Dalglish will be in the hotseat for years to come, and will bring lots of success to the club, but when the inevitable day comes for the King to retire, would you take Benitez back at Anfield?

Suring 'An Audience with Rafa Benitez' last night, Benitez reiterated:

"I was really proud to be Liverpool manager and I want to be manager in the future. I will wait. I don’t want headlines tomorrow, but I want to support Kenny. But in the future, if I have to wait three, five, 10 years.

"I was really pleased and happy at Liverpool and hopefully they will win a lot of trophies. But when Kenny retires . . . I’ve had two or three phone calls from China, Russia and Mexico, but for me, the priority is the Premier League".

What do you think?

  1. look at what you're about to start.

  2. Probably not - his motivational skills are nonexistent and they are essential to success in the Premier League. I've always been a great admirer of his tactical mindset and attention to finest details, but that is not enough.

  3. I really hope not, I blame his poor management style for the loss of many key players in recent years such as Alonso, Arbeloa, Mascherano, Yossi.....and it wasnt his team that won in Istanbul, it was Houlliers! May KK be in charge for many successful years to come and hopefully pass on his reigns to Carra!

  4. I'd have him back like a flash. I wish some tandem role with Kenny and the current team would work.

  5. could not of said it better my self.

  6. he had his chance and kenny will still be hear for years to come and pass it on to carra

if he had backing which kenny has he could have got villa silva and mata etc

  8. He had his chance and he failed - it's time to move on

For those that want to talk about the money available now, then why stop at Benitez? Houllier and Evans didn't have free reign to purchase whoever they wanted in the transfer market either but nobody seems to argue about them deserving another shot under better circumstances.

(On another note, I would take Phil Thompson back as assistant manager though.)

  9. No no no - please God no

  10. Yes but Roy Evans and Houllier did not come close to achieving what Benitez did at Liverpool, not to mention his massive success in Spain. Apples and oranges.

  11. when Kenny retires (hopefully in a long time) i'd take him back in a heartbeat.

  12. you probably don't give a rats ass, but still I just unsubscribed from this site, as there is just too much bullshit going on. Seems like you're more of a blogger than a liverpool fan, which is very sad.

  13. Well Jamie, you've opened a can of worms......You as a Benitez hater should look at the poll at the end, I recon it will be a 50/50 split.

I would have him back, If Fenway backed him (am not totally convinced by them yet, we've still had to sell to buy each time) so we could buy the big names and not the second or third choices each time, I think Rafa could realize his and our dreams of Premiership Crowns and Champions Leagues.

Rak, you say it wasn't Benitez's team that won the Champions League Final.....are you forgetting how many times Liverpool cam back from being 1-0 down under Houllier, It wasn't many.....3-0 down against Milan.

Are you forgetting winning in Kiev, Nou Camp, Crushing Madrid and United.
Then 2 years later losing a Final we dominated in the Champions League against A.C Milan again.

Sir Alex Furgusson has taken United to 3 Champions League Finals in 25 years.
Rafa took us to 2 in 5 years.......Not bad considering all the people who still constantly slate him.

Yes he made mistakes, yes his tactics were sometimes questionable.
But at the end of the day, he took us to within 4 pts of United, then had a horrendous follow up season. In my opinion he should've had at least another 12 months to put things right.....and so Hodgson (thanks to Benitez haters like yourselves) took us backward 2 years in under 12 months.

But then, it's all about opinions.

  14. I absolutely love the fact that people point to it being Houllier's team.  For me, thta just makes it all the more remarkable!  He took such an average team (on paper) and guided them all the way to one of the greatest achievements in recent times.

I'm also a Houllier fan, but you can't possibly believe that Houllier (or anyone else for that matter) could have taken that team all the way in 05?

He got the absolute best out of some rather average players, and thats not even mentioning the quite obvious contribution of Alonso and Garcia!

  15. no fuck off rafa - he's vermin to our club and don't let him return to us

leave our club alone, fat spanish waiter!

  16. Liverpool_supporter300, you are so right. The list of players, but then had to do with had an awful lot to do with it.Adam Johnson, Aguero were prime examples.Even near the end he wasn't allowed to spend 9m on Negrado or 2m on Distan.Personally I would have liked him to have 10-15 million for quality defenders, even £1million wasn't given to him, so we had to buy Kyriakos.sparq2112

  17. Your argument doesn't really hold water, sorry to say - he was the man who brought ALL the players you mention to the club in the first place; that is, every single one of them!

    ReplyDelete
  18. yea course Benitez was one of our best managers we had in a long time. just shows how much Jaimie knows about football or liverpool when hes always going on about his anti benitez bull. he took us back to rank number 1 in europe over his time with us not by just winning it in his first year. then we where really close to being back number 1 in epl and showing progress every yr he was with us. but as every1 knows we got them cowboys and they started making him sell to make profit never mind sell b4 you buy! we lost are good players got crapper ones then slip out europe and down epl. and they used him as a scape goat.  got woy in i remember jaimie u where saying how good he was gonna be not to long aga lol ur clueless

benitez loved liverpool thats why he was always at odds with the owner because he know they werent doing what was good for liverpool or they promised for. if he had off got backing he would of had won a lot more at liverpool look at what he won with hes time with not much backing anyway.
how long did it take fergie to win the leauge and look at how much he had to  spend b4 then

  19. 'Why stop at Benitez'?

Because he's the most successful manager LFC have had since the 80's; & it's not just that he didn't 'have free reign to purchase whoever (he) wanted'; it's the fact that we had corrupt American robbers denuding the club!

  20. Would have him back as long as he agrees to play Charlie ADAM because he plays football like Javi ...

  21. Annoying post, and useless poll. Kenny Dalglish is actually the Liverpool's manager. Kenny Dalglish for life or until He decides to retire and When it come the moment to find a replacement for Kenny, We don't know where Rafa is, the Rafa's intentions and the age of Rafa.
I'm interested in Liverpool now, I'm interested in Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool now, Liverpool are doing well and I feel very very pleased to see Liverpool playing good football They are doing now, and I'm not interested in future scenarios that seem very very unlike.
    Kenny for Life, and stop.
If Ferguson still is United manager, Kenny can perfectly do the same for Liverpool.
    FACT, and stop.

  22. Remember it's he who brought these players.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Must always give him another chance.

    ReplyDelete
  24. remember it's the money of Torres & babel sales we purchased caroll(flop)suarez.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You may blame his 'poor management style' for the loss of key players such as Alonso, Arbeloa, Mascherano & Yossi but the other side of the coin is that he is responsible for bringing in all of the above not to mention the likes of Torres, Agger, Reina, Johnson, Lucas as well as setting up the deals which saw players for the future such as Shelvey and Sterling brought in. He completely overhauled the Academy and it's structure, bringing in Pep Segure & Rodolfo Borrell. I may also add that without Rafa and the miracle of Istanbul and the near greatness of Athens we may well be watching Steven Gerrard strut his stuff down on the Kings Road rather than in L4. None of the above great players would have been enticed to Anfield were it not for Rafa making us a force in Europe once more. Oh, and did I forget to mention who brought Kenny back in from the cold? Rafa, You'll Never Walk Alone.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Would have him right now because under Kenny i don't think we will be top four ..its sad considering the money spent

    ReplyDelete
  27. Plenty of managers have had success abroad, so why not give one of them a try, rather than somebody that has already proven incapable of winning the Premiership? And if I'm not mistaken the league title has always been the priority for Liverpool has it not??

Btw Arebee, Houllier did come second (although I give Thompson a lot of credit for that) and Evans was never given the privilege of being handed entry into the Champions League for just maintaining a place in the top 4 as he did, so who's to say that he wouldn't have accomplished the same as Benitez in Europe under similar circumstances??

    ReplyDelete
  28. He might've been the most successful we've had since the 90's but he was ultimately still a failure - all the quotes on the official website about 'not accepting second best', but even that seems to be beyond the dreams of a lot of our/Rafa FC fans nowadays!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Not as manager.  Possibly as technical director identifying players (IF and only if the big money is still flying about) and improving the general infrastructure of the club.  Rafa in the modern game is a poor man manager and as players today are sulky spoilt brats who have been pampered since 7 where they cried on the pitch during a game if they were losing (I've seen it many a time) Rafa has no part to play in managing a successful LFC in the future unless he mellows his management style drastically.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Kenny Dalglish for life or until He decides to retire

Whats going on?  Its shocking to me to see individuals being placed ahead of LFC.  Kenny always says "no individual is bigger than the club". So why not follow his mantra and hold Kenny and players to account if and when needed.  I love Kenny as much as the next man but if he starts to drag the club down we have to remember who it is we support.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "Houllier and Evans didn't have free reign to purchase whoever they wanted in the transfer market either..."

Yes, they had! Specially Houllier. They bought lot of players with big money in time when Liverpool were almost as rich as ManU. But they bought mainly wrong players: Some france-african and norwegian players. Houllier had even chance to buy Cristiano Ronaldo, but couldn't see potential...

  32. I would love Rafa back in some capacity!!!!.............he loves Liverpool just like we do!!!. He won't move from the Wirral and said he never will, he donated £96,000 to the JFT96 group!!!!. Firstly because he is a great coach who has a lot to offer even in the academy.................why not!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Rafa is Liverpool.Rafa would never walk out of Liverpool.Rafa could of had the Madrid job on twice his salary and given unlimited transfer funds, yet Rafa stayed.Dalglish must be given to the end of the season and if we dont get champions league he should be sacked and not given chance to tender his resignation because he would of FAILED with unlimited resources.Rafa cannot wait forever its only a matter of time before one of the worlds giants comes knocking on Rafas door then he could be lost forever unless he has a clause inserted into any new contract with a new club allowing him to leave only for his Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sure Kenny is an inspirational figure and has lifted the spirits after a couple really bad seasons.  But Tactically Rafa is far better... I would love to see both of them together in some way.... that's not gonna happen anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If we had Rafa back and we had mostly British Players in the squad would Rafa stick by them or would we have to have another manager having to go on a spending spree because he wants his own players, then we would have to put up with more tables going on about how we spend more money then Man United!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks but no thanks Rafa. You had your time and we have moved on.

All of you hoping that he will return one day are heading towards a road called bitter disappointment.

IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN :(

    I REPEAT...

IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN :)

I can bet FSG have taken a good look at Rafa's six season, what he spent, what he won and how he couldn't keep his nose out of the politics (which he also did at Valencia and Inter) and how he lost the title by having a rant at red nose fergie :) oh and guarenteeing 4th and making a complete stuff up in his last season.

Rafa wants all the power and unfortunately for him FSG do not work that way. Not even Dalglish had all the say when signing players, Comolli played a major part in our latest transfers so even if Rafa had to be given another shot he will play second fiddle to FSG anyway which brings me back to the part where...

IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN :)

There is good news for Rafa though, if he does not find a new job anytime soon then there is always the option of becoming a season ticket holder.

How many times has he attended a match at Anfield since his departure?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I wonder who signed Alonso..oh sorry i mean CHARLIE ADAM team...camolli or Kenny don't...Carroll and Henderson also whilst we are at....Personally which ever individual signed them needs to be congratulated because these 3 players have made us a force once again

    ReplyDelete
  38. Clearly it does not matter what you have to say about Adam, Carroll and Henderson and clearly you will never be able to make them go away so keep on being negative towards them as it clearly will get you NOWHERE.

Clearly you are in a situation where you dislike the way LFC go about their business nowadays so that clearly is going to make you a sour supporter for years to come.

Damn, it is good to be a supporter of Liverpool Football Club :)

  41. noo we wouldnt want him back , as a liverpool fan i respect what he has done for the club but i also know what he is not capable of and thats winning the premiership, he simply doesn't have anything else to offer..

    ReplyDelete
  42. everyone is talking about the love rafa has for the club which is not a bad thing, but that does that win as trophies, does that grantee champions league football?? lets get real people rafa messed us up big time tha last few seasons, he dint even have a decent squad.. lets forget about him and move on.. king kenny is doing a great job..

    ReplyDelete
  43. Rafa needs the full backing of the owners to succeed.  Under the current owners, i think he'd do a good job.  We have to remember that nobody fully understands the poor working environment he was in and although he did leak some 'dirty washing' out, he shut up near the end and just tried to do a job.  I believe that even the best managers eg. Moriniho, would not have lasted as long as Rafa under the previous owners.  We may never know how bad the working environment really was but i'm pretty certain it had a negative impact to everyone in the club - not just Rafa.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 'Accepting second best' - so which manager will improve upon our best under Rafa. If you say 'The King', I certainly won't be putting my mortgage on it. Will you?

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm not so sure he'd be a good match with the current owners. They appear to be a no-nonsense lot and Rafa has something of a history of butting heads with team owners.

I could be wrong, might be a match made in heaven but somehow I don't think, with his history, they'd give him much consideration for that reason.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Come on, we need to give Kenny all the support he needs, i have not been happy with some of his decisions ito players sold and players bought, He has also given liverpool its english identity back (at a cost of course), but at least the team will run themselves into the ground for him and give him more energy and intensity.

Rafa was a great Coach for LFC, with current owners he would definitely have done better, but he is in the past, Kenny is in the present and the foreseeable future.

I have my concerns about our current squad, particularly in midfield and attack, we seem to be struggling to gel ito of combinations, and our passing and movement is not as fluent as it has been at the end of last season. We seem to lack a cutting edge. Hopefully Gerard will solve some of this!!!but we definitely need a Silva, Modric, mata etc that can create for liverpool!!!we are putting a lot of pressure on Suarez and his game is slowly going downhill.Suarez more than anybody else needs a creative midfielder on his wavelength otherwise we are going to struggle!!!!

  47. Kenny Dalglish is Liverpool.
He loves the City, the Club and the whole Liverpool's community: fact.
He attended some funerarls after Hillsborough tragedy, and He dedicated his life, along with his wife Marina, to the City.
He's a great man  Who knows what is required to win the league and what is required to bring back Liverpool to winning ways.
I fully trust in Kenny, I support him, the Club and the guys on the ground to succeed and I don't want to think about the day "He will decide to retire".
The all business it sounds disrespectful towards Kenny.
It seems that some fans are doing a sort count - down.
It's just the 2nd time this year that Rafa spreads the debate about Kenny's day of retirement, when the only thing that I want (like so many Liverpool fans) is that Kenny stays for life because We know how good He's working for the Club.
I don't want to speak about the future, because I'm only interested in the present as those times are so exciting.
In the future, If Owners are willing to appoint him, If Rafa are still keen to took the reins (We don't know what excatly brings the future) and If majority of Fans still have good feelings towards Rafa, then I will be happy to support him like I've always done with any manager, but actually I don't see the reason to debate about unlike scenarios. I'm happy of the Manager, The Guys, The newcomers, and I'm happy to see entertaining football week in week out by the men in red, and I will be happy If Kenny stays in charge for 10 - 15 - 20 yrs, until He desires to be Liverpool manager.
If mister drinking noise can be United Manager for more of 19 yrs, then KENNY DALGLISH has the skills to do the same thing for Liverpool.

  51. Heres the bottom line & a lotta you Rafa fans aren't going to like it .

The English Media has made a Monkey outa Rafa so often for so long that the only job he is likely to walk into on Merseyside would be the Tranmere Rovers Job , Everton wouldnt even look at him .

He has lost all the credibility & the respect he had attained within the game & his abject failure at Inter proves as much .

Rafa is an excellent tactician & a good all around "European Coach" not in charge of transfers , but for me he has to go back to Spain & rebuild his career if he ever hopes to climb back to the heights he achieved with us .

He needs to go back to his roots & re do all he done to get him to where he was because he became a joke at the end with us .

He should have walked as soon as it became public that Klinsman was being lined up to replace him .

In the end he didnt just lose the dressing room he put together for us , he lost the Inter dressing room before he even arrived & that wasnt the English Medias fault , that was his own fault for not doing the right thing .

Rafa should be considered a footballing success story , an average player who worked his way to the top of management but he isnt , he is considered a joke .

He needs to get back to Spain , rebuild his Career & hopefully we will see him back at the top again , either managing his beloved Real Madrid or the Spanish National team but between now & then he has got to climb the mountain all over again .

    ReplyDelete
  52.  He had the owners full backing at Inter .

    ReplyDelete
  53.  World giants ?

Inter were the Champions League Champions when he went to them & that didnt work out so well , how come ?

Was that Hicks & Gillette's fault too ?

    ReplyDelete
  54.  Why not ?

Because outside of your head , in the real world he is a joke because of his Rant at Fergie & because he then took a top 2 side he put together & finished 7'th & then went to Inter & became an even bigger joke throughout the whole of Europe !

    Thats why not .

    ReplyDelete
  55.  Identifying players like N'Gog , Insua, Sissoko , Voronin , Jovanovich , Plessis , Gonzalez , Degan , Krongkamp & Fabio Injurio ?

Rafa wouldnt get a job cutting the grass at Melwood let alone Anfield after that mess .

Rafa had his time , get over it & put it to rest along with Hodgson & Houllier .

    ReplyDelete
  56. You are in the minority im afraid, check the vote????

    ReplyDelete
  57. I dont think it would be fair to sack the current Kit man just for the sake of giving Rafa a job even he couldnt manage to mess up .

    ReplyDelete
  58. Was he poorly backed at Inter too ?

  59. Two cup final wins & a 2'nd place finish ?

Thats not a bad bet for a single Dalglish season ,not even this season ,  I wouldnt put my mortgage on it but I will buy ya some salt & vineger to make it easier on ya when you have to eat yer words .

  60.  What ?

Do you think this is an election ?

Or is it a place for the spineless & weak willed to band together & hold hands ?

If so I'm in the wrong place coz I thought it was somewhere to talk about LFC , not opinion polls .

oh and the media are so free and fair these days arent they, they have absolutely no agenda at all!!! Come on Brehon!!!

  62. Your attitude is a strategy. You're looking for a Liverpool's failure, instead of supporting the Club. We don't need of so called fans. Go and support Chelsea, City, or another Club with host of grabbing money and wage hunters.
Liverpool will clinch the spot because We are a young & exciting team.

    ReplyDelete
  63. yes, he spent zero with inter

    ReplyDelete
  64. I first stood on the Kop when Phil Taylor was the manager and sadly, I have to say that the performance of the team during the last twelve months of Rafa's tenure was abject in the extreme. Kenny has steadied the boat and instilled a belief back in the dressing room. Hopefully he will be successful for years to come, but if he has to be replaced for any reason there's a bloke at Barcelona who has a reasonable CV !!

    ReplyDelete
  65. because what kenny did 20 years ago and love for tke club we should let him manage as long as he wants

    ReplyDelete
  66. Rafa moved the club forward until the two yanks meant he had to start selling to buy and Rafa is no wheeler dealer in the transfer market. With the kind of money that Kenny spent last summer Rafa would have had the club firmly in the top 4 right now.
Even most of Rafas worst signings stack up quite nicely when compared to the likes of Adam, Carrol, Henderson or Downing. Who wouldnt want the creativity of Aquilani (currently doing very well for AC Milan) over hit it long and hope Adam.

    ReplyDelete
  67. The fact is that nobody else we could get is as good as Rafa. Hodgson certainly wasn't; Kenny isn't either, as much as I like him. I'm sorry to say but in the absence of Rafa, Liverpool are being transformed into a mediocre team. I'd love him to come back. I always knew he was quality, just like I always knew Houllier wasn't. And he loves the club, which actually matters.
