KENNY DALGLISH: "Liverpool's players let themselves down. It will not be accepted..."

Liverpool FC manager Kenny Dalglish has slammed his players after the woeful team performance against Rangers. In typically no-nonsense style, Dalglish questioned the attitude and commitment displayed on the pitch, and made it clear that such a lack of effort would not be tolerated.

Clearly disappointed by the display ahead of the Premier League game at Norwich City this weekend, Dalglish said:

"You can’t go and play like that if you want to play for Liverpool football club. It’ll not be accepted.

"It’s only a friendly but it doesn’t mean you can’t put in effort and commitment. We’re disappointed from that side of it.

Many of Liverpool's fringe players were given a run out, and the names on the pitch showed the depth of the club's squad, but Dalglish was disappointed some players didn't take their chance to impress:

"The beauty of having a good squad is putting the other players under pressure. I gave them the opportunity...one or two of them let themselves down.

"You’ve got to take the opportunity to help yourself, and I don’t think some of them did that tonight. We’re happy to have them, but we want them with a better attitude than they had there.

Despite the poor level of performance, Dalglish still managed to find some positives:

"I think some of the boys will have got some benefit out of it. Obviously it’s not a level of performance you’re ever going to be happy with, but it’s understandable, with some of the boys coming back and getting their first game for a while".

I watched the game, and it was indeed abject from start to finish. Andy Carroll was especially off the pace, and didn't look like he could be bothered.

Having said that, I can understand if Carroll is feeling a little demotivated at the moment. After working so hard and then scoring against Everton, his reward was being dumped on the bench for one of the biggest games of the season.

Not the greatest way to motivate a player who is clearly struggling for form and confidence.

  1. It was an entirely pointless match; which took place probably because it helped struggling 'gers financially

  3. Dalglish only has himself to blame for signing some dud players. Some of them are simply not good enough for Liverpool FC.

  4. im sorry but who isn't good enough? Carroll is a talented player and will come good given enough time, Coates played very well last night, Enrique has been the buy of the season, Downing has shown glimpses of promise, Adam has been great and we paid well under 10 million for him, Henderson has looked very lively and Steve Bruce, Stuart Pearce AND Kenny must rate him or he wouldn't figure in their teams.Suarez...well need i say more? All of these players are improvements on what has left and we have bought the average age right down give the lads a year to gel and we will be challenging again.

  5. Jaimie. I know you're fishing mate, and I know that you feel that Andy's performances recently merited a start against United, but there isn't an Oriental masseuse in the world who could have relieved me more than when I saw Andy's name on the bench on Saturday.

Starting with Carroll would have been as much a mistake as not starting with Rooney. He's simply not good enough and starting him in our biggest games is putting us at an immediate disadvantage.

We need to sign another £35m priced striker before we can truly bury the hatchet on this, or else get lucky like United and sign a fluke like Hernandez.

  6. actually no. The players that left, for instance Meireles, Aquilani, Torres. How is it an improvement if we are still the same level. Why? Because Chelsea have 4 solid strikers to choose from, Anelka, Drogba, Torres, Sturridge. In the central midfield they are stacked, Essien, Lampard, Ramires, Meireles, Mikel. Thats the difference between teams like United, Chelsea and Man City because they have that abundance to choose from. We threw our abundance of quality away. Now their is more pressure on the Starting 11 to produce. Pressure that Carroll isnt handling to well. If we had Aquilani and Meireles or even one of them it would have made our team stronger wouldn't it? And if we didn't have so much pride and refused Torres's request like other teams have done with their players he would have easily changed his mind if he saw how good Suarez was.

  8. I believe Carroll is a good player. He has an excellent left foot and he's not just about heading.  We have really got to understand that he's come with this amazing price tag and he's under a severe amount of pressure to perform.  However, i think Kenny did choose the right team against Man U and it was unfortunate for Carroll.  But he must be given another run of games to truly find his form and confidence.

  10. Let Jimmy Case and Tommy Smith take Andy Carroll out for a pint and explain things nicely to him

  11. Downing needs to SCORE GOALS - Young is making him look SILLY

  12. Eh Rusty.. I presume you havn't been watching the team since pre season. How about Downing, Adam, Shelvey ( so good  he is now on loan at Blackpool ) Gerard ( two more seasons max ) Henderson ( the invisible man ) Flanagan ( liability ) I didn't mention Carroll or Bellamy or the fact that Carragher is left wanting every game now, or or or. That idiot Comolli told us that Aquilani was not required because the only successful position we could play him was Steven Gerards, well Gerard was out for 6 months, and having watching all the pre season games he made the rest of our slow, idea 'less'  dull midfield look like pensioners. Comolli then shafted Meireles and lets face it non of our midfield are fit to lace his boots yet he was sitting on the bench. So 3 cheers for our English midfield and the great work from Clarke Dalglish and Comolli. BAD MANAGEMENT, BAD DECISION MAKING, BAD PURCHASES, ALL IN ALL BAD BUSINESS, and hopefully Fenway will take no prisoners and sort it out and the end of the season.

  13. This has nothing to do with form, this is all about attitude! carrol needs to
change his way of thinking and realize that this team, our team the mighty
liverpool is not just a job but is an entity that exsists to give joy and happiness to millions of people the world, and if andy or any other player
does not show any pride in wearing the red jersey then they dont belong
at liverpool,it should be a labour of love, maybe kenny really needs to be
digging out more local talent to fill in the boots that will leave a massive
hole when the local stalwarts carra and steve have to call time on their
    playing days.

  14. He was a waste of money. Forget the price tag. Lets be honest, think back, when we were all so shocked that Liverpool at the last minute decided to get 50 million for Torres ( who it must be said has had a bad run but even then makes Carroll look like a mule ) when that 50 million was making its way up the motorway and as a football fantasy fan you Malcolm, were writing your shortlist for Kenny to go out there and BUY a new centre forward... Did you have Andy Carroll on that list? Forget the money, was he even on the list. We are talking about business men at Liverpool and football experts sitting around a table, probably for months thinking about the positives and negatives of selling the clubs greatest asset, and if selling, suitable replacements. And they came up with Andy Carroll, I can imagine in Spain the football fanatics would have been saying, Andy who? Is he any worse than Downing, no, or Adam, no. Who was the worst purchase probably Downing. He is predictable, has little pace and I think has only made the byline twice this year, total waste of money, Villa must have been laughing all the way to the bank with that one also.

  15. Jim I hear about this pride in the shirt nonsense all the time, particularly from English National team supporters. You can have all the pride and passion in the world mate, tears running down the face, badge kissing, whatever takes your fancy, but if you don't have ability, guile, skill, pace, vision to see the pitch as a grid, movement, to know the where the third pass is going before the first is made, to kill a ball in an instant and leave your defender for dead. Carroll doesn't have any of that unfortunately, whether he can improve and learn that, who knows, but pride and passion and reading all the books in the world about the history of LFC will not make him a better player. If you are talking about him making 'more effort' as in tracking back and chasing lost balls, well to be honest, he was bought to stick the ball in the back of the net. And he isn't doing that, and I think if he was doing that you wouldn't give a toss if he showed this so called great skill 'passion' or not, and if he was tracking back you would be saying stop wasting your energy on the half way line, do what you do best and stay in the 12 yard zone. So... unless we get some kinda miracle, I think Carroll is what he is, a decent footballer on his day, world class never and so far in a red shirt worse than mediocre.

  16. The club's attitude allows for players who want to hide. It's fair to suggest that the Carroll question would have been addressed a lot quicker and more sharply at United. Granted, they've had their failures over the years, but Ferguson has rarely succumbed to the pressure of the price-tag. I feel that it's a good thing that Kenny knows that we're currently a better team without Carroll. That's the one bonus we can take from this.

Now let's hope the penny drops on Charlie Adam too. I'm not saying we should drop him - I'm saying we should sign someone better and THEN drop him.

  17. Moan, moan, moan. We've got some excellent talent in the youth ranks...

  18. thats great, im sure stoke and the likes also have.  over the last decade very little of our youth talent makes it at LFC, we have a limitless supply of great prospects that never progress, who are you referring to? Spearing, Coady, Morgan? we just bought Coates, he's 20, whats the chances of the 7 or 8 18 yr-olds cutting it at the academy when the bosses are going to paraguay for someone 18 months older than them. We bought Wilson from Rangers last year as a great new prospect how many times has he played?

  19. You can now see why torres and Meireles left Liverpool for a bigger club like Chelsea.

  20. i think kenny missed out by benching carroll vs united and i'm glad to see it pointed out here. i love the man, but i think it was one step forward, two steps back.

  21. Carroll does not fit in with the style we play. I know a lot of people think that now we have Downing we should be whipping in crosses but im afraid Carrolls conversion rate with headers is not that great.

We play better with the ball on the deck and i think the whole team has realised that now. The team is slowly being built around Suarez's positioning up top and that's the way it should be. If were to sign another striker, it will have to be someone similar to Carroll, strong and with quick feet.
We still need a right winger and imo i think we should try Johnson in that position. He has pace and trickery and would be another success story similar to Gareth Bale.

    My team:

    Reina
    Kelly
    Agger
    Coates
    Enrique
    Gerrard
    Adam
    Downing
    Johnson
    Suarez
    Kuyt/Bellamy

  22. Put out Carrar, Lucas, Carroll and Henderson is right, I like that :D I also like G.Jonhson play as right winger. But I will put Bellamy on left wing instead of Downing.

    Reina
    Kelly
    Coates
    Agger
    Enrique
    Johnson
    Gerrard
    Adam
    Bellamy
    Kuyt
    Suarez

  23. Chelsea are a bigger club than Liverpool? Clearly the only thing you care about is the obsession of the players in your team because that's the only reason why Chelsea are "big". You take away the players and they are nothing. Go to Liverpool's trophy cabinet, take a tour, refresh your memory,  Liverpool is "the Big Pappa" and Chelsea are is just "a  paperboy". Cant mess with the winning tradition Liverpool speaks. I don't hear your club speak, all I hear is Abramovich.
