FOOTBALL CHEATS: No 16 - Steven Gerrard (Liverpool v Chelsea - 2009)

Once again, it pains me to add Liverpool players to this series, but in the interests of fairness, it has to be done, and Steven Gerrard was quite rightly booked for this blatant piece of play-acting against Chelsea.

Quite why such a brilliant player like Gerrard has to dive is completely beyond me.

The little caption that pops up on the screen was not put there by me!

  1. This was not a dive. You can quite clearly see that Mikel's arm came across Gerrard and that he grabbed some of Gerrard's shirt and slightly pulled him back.

However, I do think that he did go down easily. He probably could have stayed on his feet but the ball got away from him.

But because there was illegal contact, I would not class this as a dive.

  2. Well spotted Red.There was slight contact but he did go down way too easy, so I vote dive. Something tells me Jaimie might be able to find more clear cut ones...

  3. He made the most of it as Mikel grabbed his shoulder pulling him!

seen much worse by other teams!

  4. I really dont understand why you post this stuff. We all know it happens in every team including Liverpool. As annoying as it is. I know you're making this particular post to be fair, but why would we want to see so many diving videos??? Who really cares. Diving is an unfortunate part of the sport, everybody hates to see it... Especially in Liverpool.

  5. I post these diving videos because I want to publicise cheating in football. I want to do my small part to make cheating in football unacceptable.  I want to help create a situation where footballers are ridiculed for cheating.  I want highlight the fans who condone and encourage cheating.

If everyone did this, cheating would soon vanish from the game.

Fan apathy is part of the reason footballers' cheat so much and as long as fans accept cheating in football, it will not change.

If every fan criticises divers - including those on their own team - then things can and will change.

  6. Jamie, can I ask something?  What team do you support?

Reason I ask is I am a diehard Liverpool supporter and have been a season ticket holder for several years.  I am like any fan, back my team through thick and thin.  I will never boo my team and I will always back them through it all.

I assume by the name of this site and I have been informed by others that you are a Liverpool supporter, yet in all my years I have NEVER come accross more anti-Liverpool Liverpool supporter.  Your posts are negative, ill-informed and gererally appauling.

You called for Gerrard be stripped of the captaincy yet he was CLEARED of charges, now you are calling him a cheat.  On your many posts, you do nothing but critisise Benetez, spending, players bought before they even kicked a ball, our captain and many many more.

It is you that is a disgrace to this club, not others.

I highly doubt you'll print this post but I wanted to vent my opinions and I know MANY Many TRUE supporters who agree.  Perhaps you should create a survey to what people think of you and your AWFUL articles.

By the way, another post of yours you start off with BREAKING NEWS, AURILLIO INJURD AGAIN - you might want to let the player and Rafa know because in interviews with them today, they didnt know!!!

  9. Bravo! If I wanted to create a parody of the cliched comments I receive on a regular basis, this would be it.

  10. Bravo! If I wanted to create a parody of the pointless, cliched comments I receive on a regular basis from narrow-minded, insular super-fans then this would be it.  *applause*

  11. The fact you receive these on a regular basis must tell you something then!!  If narrow mindedness means sticking by your side through thick and thin (YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE) then so be it.  Rather that than negatve 'slag off your team and all who play for it' attitude you have.

  12. You are a living, breathing cliche. Enjoy!

(Any more posts that are nothing to do with article will be deleted as per the comment policy.  If you have an opinion or view about the Gerrard dive then please state it)

  13. This was a proper dive. No doubt! There seems to be this myth - or maybe mis-understanding - that once there is contact, it's not a dive. Wrong. If you go down under your own steam - whether there is contact or not - you dived.

You can see Gerrard trying to get right into the box to get a penalty. He lost control of the ball, and 'decided', (it's a split-second one) to "go down". It is very frustrating because the lead up play was excellent, and look who the ball was falling to when Gerrard lost possession - Kuyt. And play could have kept going.

And he had to mind his P's and Q's after that wasteful booking too - couldn't go steaming into a last-ditch tackle for fear of going off.

You're right to highlight the bane of modern football. That, and kicking the ball out when an oppostion man is on the deck. I hate that one! Aaagh!

It's ironic, that diving to gain unfair advantage, and and it's alter-ego, kicking-to-touch to demonstrate that you're not trying to gain unfair advantage, are spoiling the game.

  14. When playing against the biggest diver in the game as in Didier Drogba then sometimes you have to play them at their own game.

  15. "If you go down under your own steam - whether there is contact or not - you dived."

For me to dive is to fall without foul. If there is a foul and a player falls - even 'on his own steam' - I dont call it a dive. If you insist it's a dive then I dont condemn this kind of dives. As long as there is not video evidence intoduced the referees frequently will not react properly (awarding a free kick/penalty/yelow/red card) if a player doesnt fall.

Lets say a player is pushed from the back when trying to controll the ball on full speed. He can to stay on his feet easily but unable to control the ball due to the foul. Lets say there is 90% he will be awarded a penalty if he falls and 20% if he keeps balance. Do you condemn a player falling in this situation? I dont. I dont think its a player duty to keep balance no matter what. It is an opposing player duty not to foul.

  16. AS GREAT A PLAYER AS GERRARD MAY BE, HE IS CONSTANTLY PULLING THESE SORT OF TRICKS, WHETHER ITS DIVING OR PRESSURING THE REF, HE ISNT AS SAINTLY AS MOST LIVERPOOL FANS WOULD LIKE TO BELIEVE. AND AS A CHELSEA SUPPORTER I GOTTA ADD WHEN DROGBA DOES IT I HANG MY HEAD IN SHAME, YET LIVERPOOL FANS SEEM TO GLOSS OVER THE FACT THAT THEIR CAPTAIN IS ONE OF THE BEST AT IT.
110% A DIVE AND WAS FANTASTIC TO SEE HIM CARDED FOR IT-AND LETS BE HONEST IF HE HONESTLY THOUGHT HE'D BEEN FOULED THEN HE WOULD'VE ARGUED THE CASE-YET HE DIDNT COS HE KNEW HE'D BEEN CAUGHT!

  17. I mean slight contact like this clip with Gerrard. There are different degrees of contact. I'm specifically addressing the level of contact in this instance. Never a foul. Do you think this is a foul?

  19. I am a true liverpool fan and that makes no difference to what a dive is and who did it. this is not the only you tube vid of stevie diving. i used to think that sometimes a player needs to go down cuz the ref misses shirt pulls and over grabby hands. i play football, and when refs dont see a foul and call it a knock for knock or strength it frustrates me no end cuz theres a lot of sneaky dirty players that know how to foul very professionaly indeed, with barges, flapping arms and pushes. so i can kind of see in some circumstances why a player goes down- just to get the refs attention. yet thats kind of taking the law into your own hands? football has changed at the top level, in my amature league you wont see a dive and players will always bounce back, up if not injured from the challenge, to fight again for the ball. Stevie, unfortunatly, has had a couple of dives over the years but its only ever more serious when it happens  TO YOU, not FOR YOU.

  20. No, in this case there was no foul - and probably no contact at all. But Istanbul IMHO is questionable.

  21. This'll be a big series with the cheating that goes on by Stevie 'Go to ground'.

After Ngog's effort recently clearly his influence on the pool is showing through.
