FOOTBALL CHEATS: No 7 - Wayne Rooney (Manchester United v Arsenal - 2004)

Yes, it's another Wayne Rooney dive!

Sol Cambell's foot brushed Rooney's shin-padded leg and the United striker went down like he'd been hit by a car. Pathetic.

I would include Rooney's infamous dive against Villareal in this series but, alas, there is no video footage of it anywhere.

The Villareal incident proved that Rooney is not only a cheat, but a self-confessed cheat. After the game, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Rooney had actually apologised for the dive:

"He apologised to me and said he didn't mean to do that. I think he's been watching Robert Pires too much. At least he apologised to their players. You'd never see Pires do that."

  2. Talk rubbish dude. Fernando Torres is hacked at every game. The only way you fools can win the premier league title is to hurt him.
Gerrard has dived.....yes but NOWHERE near the frequency of Rooney, Ronaldo and Drogba....
I suppose youre gonna say to that the sending second foul was a dive too hey.
Rather go watch Greg Louganis.....maybe youll get something right.

  3. Torres went down in the box on Saturday without being touched, no doubt you won't have seen it though.

  4. Would that be the one where Torres went down over the heavy tackle which won the ball and didn't appeal for a penalty? The one where the defender ranted at Torres who got up and said plainly that he wasn't looking for a penalty he just went down under the momentum of the tackle. You idiot.

  5. Bob, you're making yourself look silly, seriously are you blind? Torres is the biggest whinging diver in the league now Ronaldo's gone, even Drogba's cleaned up his act.

  6. Without being touched?????
Are you crazy, his feet were takin out from under him.....Yes the player got the ball but that does not mean that because he fell he was looking for anything.
The player who tackled him was making an ass of himslef insisting that torres tried to dive. Total bullshit. Fernando was not even looking at the referee. The player should STFU and take cues from the ref. You know......those guys who officiate in matches.

  9. At least United fans could admit Ronaldo dived, Liverpool fans just seem either blind or ignorant to it in their own team. Only a fool would look at that video and say there was contact, there clearly wasn't yet Torres looks like he's in agony. It's a shame, he doesn't need to act like that.

  10. Ok Jevon, were his feet taken from under him or was he pulled? Make your mind up.

  13. erm Gerrard? Gerrard has easily done it more on occasions than Rooney and even Torres. Gerrard is a good level above Rooney and Torres when it comes to diving. There are several youtube clips devoted to Gerrard's numerous diving incidents. Much more than Rooney's. Which illustrates just how much more Gerrard dives more than Rooney. Gerrard felt the need to dive against ANDORRA!!!! Pathetic

  16. Whatever dude, ill admit Nando made a meal of it but I still reckon there was contact ftom the hip and the hand of that defender. not like Rooneys totally mistimed dives 3 seconds after the supposed contact.

I would recommend Gilberto Silva's amazing dive when he was apparently shot by a sniper in the stands:

  22. As an Arsenal fan I was really disappointed with Eduardo after his dive. Cause I've truly regarded him as one of the most decent characters in the game not only in Arsenal but in PL as well. So I was also disappointed that it was him that had to be singled out as the cheat. There would have been more appropriate examples in Arsenal as well since I can't recall another dive from Eduardo. But then again for a greater good if it helped to get rid of some of the diving in the game I was willing to accept it.

But so many dives have taken place after that without any fuzz. I don't want to say anything about the media cause I really have no idea about their motives etc. I can understand that for a referee it's in most cases impossible to tell for sure whether someone dived. I can also understand - although don't approve it - that managers are unwilling to condem diving from their own players even after seeing clear video evidence of the case. But what I don't understand nor approve is the fans' behaviour. For example I'm disappointed that ManU fans are turning a blind eye on Rooney's diving. Cause he does dive. It doesn't mean that he's not a great player, he obviously is, one of the best at the moment. But he dives like so many other great players unfortunately.

You can't have it both ways. You either choose to live with diving seeing it as part of the modern game or maybe just as an unwanted necessity. Or you condemn it completely regardless of whether it's your own player or your rival's. And cause as a fan you can have the greatest impact on your own team, it would actually make the most sense to show your dissapproval when one your own players dive. I've thought that putting the players to watch replays of their dives with their own fans would actually be quite an efficient way to cut down diving. Obviously it would only work if fans truly condemn diving, just as most fans keep saying that they do.

Anyway that's why I'm really pleased with this series. Cause I believe that football supporters can have the power - or some power at least - to make a change. Try to stay unbiased regardless of your love or loathe for a player or a club!

  24. Jamie

One thing amuses me: Rooney admitted it was a dive and SAF admitted it was a dive. Yet 12.8% of your guests denies he dived and 3.5% says "Its hard to say"

I wonder: what else is required for this people to change their minds?

  25. I have no problem calling MU English Champions - this is a FACT. Being World Champions is another story - you are second best in Europe so how can you be the best in the world? Yes you won a meaningless trophy beating one reasonably strong team. Congratulations, but dont expect too much praise and glory for your asian heriocs.

I have no problem admiting Steven Gerrard dived. But why are you so infuriated when Jamie showed some Rooney examples? Maybe it's you who have some problems with reality? Dont you think so?

  26. When Platini was asked about Arsenal's Eduardo situation, Platini admits he himself would dive. This shows at the highest level, players would dive to win penalties, freekicks etcetera. Normally thing happens very quick, in a split of second, in 50-50 situation, one player will get the decision. A striker tumbling a bit late than the tackler, he'll be called a diver. If he is fractionally earlier, he'll get the decision, like when Rooney against Alumunia. Notice that Rooneys legs was already collapsing before Aluminia touched him. Rooney likes to dive and he'll dive everytime against Arsenal.

  27. Yes, I'm a hardcore Utd fan, been that for 25 years now. You scources are just bitter about the fact that Man Utd > liverpool the last 20 years. Suck it up! :)

  28. Sorry mate but I think it's you lot who have a problem with reality...... We will see if any of your players will be included in your so called Cheat List...  You would have to do a top 100 if you are to include gerrard and nancy boy torres' dives coz 10 won't be enough...

  30. lets behonest lads. we cant really criticise other teams divers a la eduardo and ronaldo whilst our own captain leaves the foot in to win frees and penalties all the time! As much as i love stevie G i hate the way he cheats to win penalties, he's world class and the cheating just takes away from his game. now that ronaldo has gone stevie really is the worst offender in the prem so can we stop going on about rooney cos it only makes us look like ignorant bigots
