In a press conference last week, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed that the Reds are not tracking England U21 goalkeeper Jack Butland, but with Pepe Reina's seemingly on the way out of Anfield, the club is reportedly lining up a potential summer move for a world class replacement.
According to The Mirror, Brendan Rodgers has his eye on Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, whose current contract expires in 2014. The report states:
"Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is plotting a summer move for Victor Valdes.
"Talks on a new deal have stalled, and unless an agreement can be reached, Barca will listen to offers of around £16million. The situation has sparked interest at Anfield"
Valdes is the number one goalkeeper as the world's top club, and he's won 19 trophies in the last 11 years. Why would he want to leave? In an interview last week, the Spaniard actually hinted that he may be open to playing in another league at some point. He told Sky Sports:
"Since signing the last one, I haven't discussed it any further. My hopes of ending my career here, time will tell. I've been in goal here for 11 years, which is complicated in many ways. I'm not ruling out experiencing other cultures, other styles of football, other countries, whatever comes my way."
Despite playing for Barcelona, Valdes surprisingly has even less appearances for Spain than Pepe Reina, both of whom have been stuck on the sidelines over the last 10 years behind Real Madrid's Iker Casillas.
In an interview in mid-December, Colombian goalkeeping legend Rene Higuita insisted that Valdes is 'one of the best goalkeepers in the world'. Barca boss Tito Villanova feels the same way, as he told Marca recently:
"After playing a key part in three of the four Champions League victories in the club's history, I believe he [Valdes] is the best keeper in the world and, more importantly, the best to have played at Barcelona by far"

ReplyDeleteI loved the original article I read on this (not by you Jaimie) that stated that Pepe was the understudy for Valdes in the Spain squad! I think you'll find that it was the other way round but with Pepe being the understudy to Iker Casillas. This rumour is terrible and I really hope there's no ounce of truth in it as Valdes if by far and large the worst player in the Barcelona team, I have never rated him as a top goalkeeper. He has just been blessed to have such a strong team in from of him, when he is called upon he can be found flapping at anything near him, he's a liability. Granted Reina has had a couple of rough years with mistakes but our defence hasn't been pulling they're weight as an entire unit Reina included for the past couple of years. No to Valdes not for that price or the wages he'd demand I'd rather have Craig Gordon on a free!
