Coutinho fail-safe: LFC chase exciting €6m ex-Barca attacker. Transfer risk...?

Liverpool are currently trying to tie up a deal for Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho, but the chances of sealing the 20-year old's signature seem slim, especially after he admitted yesterday that he's happy at Inter Milan. If the move collapses, the Reds have other options, and reports in Portugal today claim that the the club is back in for Sporting Lisbon star Jeffrén Suarez.

According to a report today in Portuguese newspaper Jornal Record, Marseille, St. Etienne and Liverpool are chasing the 25 year old attacker, whose current contract expires in two years.

At the end of November 2012, Jornal also claimed that Liverpool were considering an offer for the winger:

"Liverpool are willing to offer £6m for Jeffrén. The Reds are strongly interested in acquiring the player, initially on loan until end of the season with an option to purchase"

The Reds tried to sign Jeffrén once before in 2011, and at the time, the 24-year old directly confirmed the club's interest. He told radio station Cadena Ser:

"It makes me proud that teams like Liverpool are interested in me. We’ll see what happens."

Jeffrén ended up signing a 5-year deal with Sporting Lisbon, and his contract contains a €30 million buy-out clause, as well as a €12m buy-back clause for Barcelona.

Jeffren is the type of player who will fit into Brendan Rodgers' 433 formation, but his creative stats are clearly not good enough:

* 1 goal/no assists in 8 appearances this season.
* 5 goals/1 assist in 28 appearances overall for Lisbon.

Additionally, Jeffren has barely bade 40 appearances in the last four completed seasons, which seems to suggest some kind of underlying issue.

Definitely not good enough. Sure we can find someone better than this.

anteater said...

Unless there actually is some talent in this player that no-one has so far managed to unlock, and Brendan actually has the fitting key, we should look elsewhere. Signing him would feel like bringing in someone just for the sake of it.

anteater said...

Oh, and his injury list is frightening. Seems to have a lot of problems with his muscles.

Jason Carr said...

lol are we going to be linked to every shower of sh1t who cannot get a game at the club there at if there not good enough for the club there at then imo there not good enough for lfc, with very few exceptions

We,d be on a hiding to nothing with this player, he,d be worse than harry kewell by the look of his record, he,d probably break his wrist signing the contract

Jason Carr said...

thats why they are a few exceptions i would maybe have the odd real madrid and barca player as well, but come on 6million for someone who had half a good game once a year no way 40 games in four years,i bet barca dont use there buy back clause lol

Jason Carr said...

he would probably break his back picking up his big fat wage check

Mark Whitelaw said...

Harry Kewell's record at Leeds was awesome and he was one of the best players in his position in the country. He came to us on a free and was injured so much, he forgot how to play football.
Torres' stats at Atletico weren't world beating by a long shot, we signed him and he went stratospheric.

Sometimes a player's stats can be very misleading. He might have some problem at his club - homesickness, falling out with a player, not liking the new training methods/city/country/weather etc. The job of the scout is to identify qualities in a player that will fit the current system at our club. If they see something in Jeffren, regardless of his stats, then they will make, at least, an enquiry.

L4red said...

Lol, yeah, out for 6 weeks first pay day

anteater said...

No, Kewell didn't come on a free. Think we've paid 5m for him.

Fair comment mate, i think our scouting systek has been awful in general for some time now, this guy just doesnt tickle my fancy :)

nobody will ever know what a player will be like once they join a club, unless their joining madrid or barca then they must av sum talent...i remember sturidge when he was linked with us he was getting bad press from most forums and the majority did not want him at the club plus the thought of another 12m down the drain and BR's recruitment skills would have be questioned yet again....NOW....since the explosion of SAS there's not been a word of protest or bad comments on any of the forums just happy pundits made up with the acquisition of Daniel saying he pairs up superbly with Luis, he didn't get a game hardly at chelski coz of drogba and anelka so his time was limited...did we ever think it wud work, well in view of the last 3 games i think this deal has work out well for us and cud only get better, we av to give BR the benefit of the doubt on evry purchase, joe allen is already comin in for sum stick...GOD.... give him a chance, jordan's started to turn the critics around god the abuse he's taken since being at the club is on a par with lucas....we are slowly turning into a top 4 side dont be surprised if we challenge this season were not that far behind!!!!! YNWA

Jason Carr said...

you might be more pissed ,,,than you think we might not sign no one else

Simon said...

Jeffren Suarez didn't look very good years ago at Barca, doubt he's much better now.....

And this Coutinho story is puzzling, is he any good? If he is, why would Inter let him go?

I think we will sign Ince, is his contract up in the summer?

A strong centre half would do too, then we'd be ok

cugsy said...

jason carr, you have such a negative view on what BR is trying to achieve, you criticise the majority of players linked with the club and his methods....what is it you would like to see happen at Anfield??

anteater said...

Always great to get more positive thinkers on this board! Hope you stay.

anteater said...

I'm very interested in the answer you will get from Jason, honestly. Better don't hold your breath.

anteater said...

Blackpool allegedly have the option to extend Ince's contract by another year, and they would be stupid if they didn't use it. So, realistically his contract is up in 2014.

i would like rodgers to leave tomorrow ,no seriously i dont blame rodgers i blame fsg for employing him it was to big a job for someone with so little experience i don,t think he his doing a really bad job now that he has dropped allen we have been playing better, but imo king kenny would have had us firing this season;the majority of players linked to the club are second rate, and all true fans hand on heart know they are not good enough, god we get excited by some second rate payers shows how far we have sunk

Jason Carr said...

and another thing why you on here are you dead,

anteater said...

Why shouldn't I reply to your posts? You raise interesting points that I wouldn't have thought of and am equally interested in the reasoning behind those opinions of yours. Can't see anything wrong with that. And I can't see you getting banned for answering questions.

I actually don't wonder why you don't reply to my questions, because, as sad as I find it, it seems to me that at times there is no reasoning to give. This is not meant in a disrespectful manner, just to make that clear. I truly believe that you too have the capacity to give proper answers to serious questions.

BTW, there is absolutely no need to call me, or someone else, a clown. Why you see fit to react disdainful to anything you disagree with is beyond me, really.

L4red said...

Glad chelsea blew it tonight. One of their players (hazard) sent off for kicking a ball boy, hope the southern press slaughter him like they do luis :)

anteater said...

You get a lot of kudos, if that is measured in "likes". Although that would make you a back-stabber according to your explanation above, I don't necessarly think you are one.

anteater said...

Question: Is it Rodgers who links us to all those second rate players or is it the media?

anteater said...

I, too, find this transfer speculation embarrassing, but I wasn't referring to it when I was talking about "positive thinkers". I found much of what cugsy had to say positive, stuff like "give players a chance" instead of slagging them off all of the time. How is that not positive thinking?

'Deliberate' handball, obviously. Followed closely by simulation.
Seriously, can you imagine the shitstorm if Suarez had done that?? They would want him hounded out of the game with a possible custodial sentence.

Thought the ball-boy milked it a bit, tbh...... ;)

The latest rumour is that the ball-boy bragged that he was going to do some time-wasting on his Twitter account.

40 games in 4 years - says it all. Has done naught for Sporting since he signed so why go back for him.

Jaimie K said...

And the spurious victim complex continues. Have you even seen the reaction by the press to the Hazard incident?

Daily Mail headline: 'Hazard horror: Chelsea's Eden shown straight red card for KICKING a ball boy'

ESPN: 'Eden Hazard will be held to highest contempt' (grammatically incorrect, but you get the picture)

The Independent: "Desperate act of ignominy that reveals the dark mood currently gripping Chelsea"

Etc

Plus literally hundreds of articles from news providers across the globe condemning the incident' 'Hazard' trending on twitter as he's castigated there.

What else do you expect the media/fans to do?!

Still, keep perpetuating the ridiculous Suarez myth.

Jaimie K said...

Yes, he'd get killed-off on RAWK because that site is totally intolerant of views that go against the majority. That is not the case here.

pandle said...

Well...while LFC comb high and low for cheap talent (maybe out of financial limitations) Arsenal seem set to snatch David Villa from Barca. Gee why didn't we think of that?

Jaimie K said...

Closet bluenose because he has a different opinion to you? Change the record.

To everyone: If someone wants to have negative views, then that's fine. All views are welcome here. If you don't like those views, well, with all due respect, tough luck. Argue against the person by all means, but cut out the sniping.

Adam Griffin said...

Says it all for me: "king kenny would have had us firing this season". I suppose that's fine, as an opinion, but I cannot imagine how you would ever begin to back it up. Liverpool were on a massive downhill slide at the end of Kenny's time as manager, our league form in the second half of the season was awful. The longer he stayed the worse we got, so on what basis would we suddenly expect to start improving again?
Rodgers has overseen what most of us seem to agree is a pretty awful season so far, but compare the league table from last year and we're only 4 points off where Kenny had us. Kenny had spent more than BR has so far and had been in charge of the club for a year, not just half a season. The difference this time around is that we have momentum and we get better every week. If this continues then it would be almost impossible to replicate the shocking end we had to last season and we should end up finishing higher, even pushing for that top 4 spot.
It's simple for me: under Kenny we were getting worse while under Rodgers we're getting better. Kenny spent freely and made terrible buys. Rodgers spends carefully and while his players are still to ultimately prove themselves at least they haven't cost us the earth. No question for me that BR is the better choice. The rest of the year will prove it though and if we hit top form in the last 4-6 weeks then I can't imagine even you keeping up your disapproval.

things for the sake of getting attention.

Jason Carr said...

lol but still better than some of the forth rate that we are linked to

anteater said...

Just like people wished in the past that Lucas and Henderson were locked away, eh.

anteater said...

Yep, and that surely isn't a good thing for a football player. Maybe he should seek a career in chess.

Jason Carr said...

so what if we get a few more points in the league so you would rather finish 6th and not have two cup finals, last year as i have said countless times the main reasons we tailed off in the league were suarez ban, already got europa league through a cup win after the cup win we were out of reach 4 champions league so concintrated on the fa cup, this year we have to carry on in the league because there are no cup wins ,and we might not even get any european football next season, also how much each manager as spent as nothing to do with it ,rodgers as spent over 50 million and apart from sturridge he uses the players kd bought, whilst his players sturidge apart cannot even get in the team and 1 of his players has already left,so yes if we do not get a trophey i will class it as a poor season, unless by some miricle we get champions leage

Jason Carr said...

agree m8 walcott would have given anfield a lot more thought if kd had still been in charge,

anteater said...

You will soon get a reply stating two cup finals, one of them a lucky win against a Championship side in a cup people usually don't rate at all, and how the injury to Lucas is to blame for everything. Oh wait, someone probably has already made those claims. Now we have added to our "In Rafa we trust" brigade an "In Kenny we trust" brigade. What's next? In Hodgson we trust?

anteater said...

Guess you really believe that.

rubyrm said...

your guess is as good as mine

Eric said...

Where are the quotes from the newspaper? The current ones, not the ones from months ago.

anteater said...

If you are talking about £s, Rodgers hasn't spent "over 50 million".

anteater said...

Yep, the incident is actually getting quite some coverage on the continent, too. Suarez's handball at Mansfield didn't get that much attention outside Britain, to be honest.

Mark Whitelaw said...

Fair point but Song & Modric have been voted the worst two signings in La Liga from last summer so you can't guarantee success even if you sign for one of El Clasico!

Jason Carr said...

yes he has if you count the sahin loan

SA_Red said...

Play Suso...

We need the right buy... an experienced player with proven ability in his position. left back, defensive mid and maybe less so now - a winger...

Paul said...

Now Modric is a player we should be looking at!

Jim G said...

"Spurious victim complex" ????? !!!!
Thanks for that, Jay. I think you are mistaken on this one, though. Fair enough, the rags will try and create a sh!tstorm, but check out Twitter (sigh) and most of the comments side with Hazard.Sky Sports last night had John Salako blaming the ball-boy (a refreshing change from their "Blackie, blackie, blackie" news report - incidentally broadcast as a FACT...). Even Suggs, admittedly a Chelsea fan, said that he was 'surprised that Hazard hadn't kicked him harder' on BBC Breakfast News this morning.I would humbly suggest that IF it had been Suarez, then there would have been a rather different take on events (perhaps due to his 'previous'), and there would have been a number of complaints made by fans at the game to the Plod.So don't patronise me.

Jim G said...

I think you unwittingly made my point for me there, anteater. Why would a handball get any coverage at all outside the UK???!!
Answer: Because it's a commonplace event. Not newsworthy.

Which begs the question why JK feels the need to keep dragging it up?

anteater said...

So, you actually believe that the Sahin loan deal was worth 10m? I pretty much doubt that to be honest.

Jason Carr said...

5 million to madrid and his wages,so may not quite be 50 million not far off

Jason Carr said...

well it will never be rodgers

anteater said...

You're welcome. I help whenever I can, even if it's unwittingly :-)

From what I've read on here, Jaimie brings up Suarez's incidents, because he thinks that our club shouldn't employ players who produce so many negative headlines. That doesn't mean that I agree with that.

anteater said...

People in publish say that Hazard should have kicked a ball-boy harder. I'd call that incitement of the people. Isn't that illegal in the UK?

anteater said...

For you, yes, that's true, but you've already made your choice anyway.

anteater said...

We will see when the accounts are published, but I am pretty sure that you are wrong.

Jim G said...

No. He writes about Suarez because he knows that whatever he writes it guarantees the most 'hits' to his site.

Jim G said...

It's ok !!

Suggs is a pop "star", from the group Madness. I don't think it was incitement, he was just trying to be funny.

To be honest, I'm bored to tears with this story already. Turns out he wasn't a ball "boy", but a 17-year old who boasted about time wasting on his Twitter account.

John Salako was on Sky last night, convinced this 'kid' was about 12....

I'm pretty sure the fat little turd mouthed "FFS" just after he was  'kicked', then realised he was on telly so rolled over again. I fully expect him to get hate mail from Chelsea fans, then have a breakdown followed by a short custodial sentence after having snapped and robbing a shop due to the stress of it all.

anteater said...

Ah well, some nice new twists to another exaggerated story. In other news, the woman who claimed that she was abused by four Brighton players is found being a serial liar.

In a way, this entire world is a big circus.
