Transfer fail! LFC lose out again as La Liga winger rejects Anfield...

Liverpool Managing Director Ian Ayre has been in Spain this week on a mission to persuade Cristian Tello to sign for Liverpool. To be honest, it's doubtful that the youngster even knows who Ayre is, so it should come as absolutely no surprise that Tello appears to have rejected Liverpool's advances and decided to stay at the Nou Camp.

According to renowned Spanish national newspaper Mundo Deportivo:

* Tello and his Agent met with Barcelona Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta on Tuesday.

* After negotiations, Tello decided to stay at Barcelona.

* He will receive a 'substantial' pay rise as part of a 'detailed contractual improvement'.

* Barca have promised Tello first-team playing time.

So there you have it: another one bites the dust. Of course, securing an extended contract does preclude the (slim) possibility of Barca sending Tello out on loan to gain first-team experience. Indeed, if he's secured his immediate future at Barca, he may be more inclined to go out on loan. You never know.

On the subject of Ayre - I don't see how sending a comparatively unknown MD to Spain is an effective transfer tactic. To the likes of Tello, he's just a guy in a suit, and not exactly someone who will impress the rising stars of world football.

Liverpool need to get a famous ex-player on the books to work with the likes of Ayre on the negotiation of transfers. As a comparison, consider Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid; imagine how impressive it must be when Madrid send Zidane along with the suits to persuade a player to come to the Bernebeau.

Similarly, the likes of Tello would surely be much more impressed (and perhaps more inclined to consider signing) if Liverpool's case was put to them by someone like Ian Rush, or Robbie Fowler, fellow footballers with the passion and insight about LFC that only comes from actually playing for the club.

I'm sure Ayre does his best, but I just can't see how he can inspire excitement in potential signings.

  2. The unpalatable fact is that Liverpool has become an archaic part of English football - that's right, yesterdays men. Why would any ambitious player want to be part of a club which has not won a title for over twenty years?

  3. more like tello just didn want to leave and for who knows what reason believes that someday he will break into the first team (despite not getting a squad number) ahead of sanchez, villa, fabregas and pedro..... imo let him stay there if he wants to live in his bubble

  4. May I ask were you got the information that Ian Ayre was in Spain today?

  5. success is ingrained into this club and normally a player who leaves moves onto a team challenging for things. recently we have had. since rafa took over

dudek-real madrid (not that recent but wanted a keeper)
    arbeloa-real madrid
    mascherano- barca
    alonso-real madrid
    mereles*- chelsea
    benayoun- chelsea
    torres- chelsea

agger, skrtle, suarez, reina all linked with moves away to big clubs 2 of which have long term contracts and the other 2 wanting to stay at club ( so we must be doing something right)

im not saying that that is what liverpool club is all about but it is a club where you will have passion and alot of media coverage which will help raise their profile and have better chance of being picked for nation. I agree in what you say we don't attact the calibre of players as liverpool Fc should. hopefully things will change soon.

  7. tello is going to alicoto madrid and sahin is going to aresnal liverpool should buy arda turan and stop this missin around and put a bid in for torres again or faclco

  8. To be fair though, Who do other clubs send along? I know you've stated who Real send, but really though Chelsea have Gourlay, City have Brian Marwood, Tottenham use Levy i think. All of them arent exactly inpressive are they? If a player signs for a club because i fellow footballer has boarded a flight then i think it'd br a bit silly. Personally id be more inpressed if the actual manager came and told me how mich he wanted to sign me.

im not sure if spanish media is anything like the british if it is take no notice...

  10. The club arguably needs all the help it can get when it comes to signing players.  Other clubs with players involved in transfer negotiations (off the top of my head):

    Fernando Hierro - Malaga
    Rui Costa - Benfica
    Uli Hoeness - Bayern Munich
    Andoni Zubizarreta - Barcelona

On the subject of Man City, Macini publicly criticised Brian Marwood the other day for lack of transfer activity, so perhaps they're having the same problem:

"After four months, I don't know what to say. You need to ask Brian Marwood. I am not the sporting director. I can't say anything about players".

Liverpool don't have a world-renowned manager, or anyone of any world football renown in the management hierarchy, so having a world-famous player on the staff in some capacity would surely be a good thing...?

  11. No talks have taken place between Tello or his agent and Ian Ayre. They are scheduled for a meeting tomorrow.Barcelona offering him a new contract wasn't a surprise at all. That was expected,so the loan deal for him should still be on..!

Tello was only going to come on loan anyway tbh I don't think he would of done well,I rather get Walcott from arsenal have borini,Suarez,Walcott upfront that would be brilliant to watch but hopefully we get sahin aswell very good player! :)

  15. i think we should give downing another chance at least 6 months we have had others like him who had very poor seasons and now are 1 of the 1st on team sheet. skrtle debut season and game he was really poor. NOW he is one of the best defender in premiership.

lucas was poor with his debut season and is 1st choice DMC and 1 of 1st on teamsheet come matchday.

  17.  Jk, if Tello wants to stay at Barcelona, then he'll stay. There's nothing any player in our history could do in this case. I think you're making too much of a deal about this. Rush, Fowler, even Dalglish, are heroes to us. I don't think Tello, a 20 year old catalan kid, even know who they are. And, in the end, it's how much he'll earn, whether he wants to move to the north of England and his chances on the side that will decide where he goes. From what I read, he's very shy and isn't ready for such a move yet. If that's the case, it's a win-win scenario for everybody. Even for us.

  18. you must smoke some heavy shit you start out saying he is in Spain to complete Sahrin deal and then jump to no wonder Tello wont join ?Tello is at one of the biggest clubs in the world he is a very young Lad being courted by other of the worlds bigest clubs and before he makes up his mind to jump ship he wants to know what his Club thinks and where they see him fitting in or the future now where is he story in that both he and Sahin will be at Anfield along with Dempsey and maybe another as numbers are short since departures this summer

  19. This is why we should have never hired Rogers no rep to be able to bring top players to the club. You must have a world knowen manager or at least ex player to attract world class talent. Rodgers is fine if you want to bring in the best from wales.the decline in our club over the last two years is so sad never should have got rid of Raffa number one club in the world wins against barca java madrid just to name a few Europe every year one bad year and he was gone crazy . But I guess sons of shankley got there king back along with the british players they all wished for.2005 to 2009 just look back how good we where and what we have now.

    ReplyDelete
  20.  Liverpool still have a strong Spanish influence since Rafa left the club via the coaching staff and the new football philosophy that Rodgers is implementing. So if Tello wants to move to another country then Liverpool would be the ideal place for him. But it sounds like he is not ready for that kind of move. I think that our 2005 champions league win has a place in a lot of peoples heart worldwide. So there are a generation of young footballers that know the potential of what this wonderful club can achieve.

  22. Downer has had 1 full season and bombed. Given chances and not producing equals to loss of points. Giving chances to these overpaid spoilt players at the expense of the club's loss is not acceptable. Enough of mediocre players earning high wages. Get them all out of the club.

Barcelona youngster wanting to stay at Barcelona is nothing strange, even if he is bit part player there it is the best team in the world and Liverpool could not guarantee him first team anyway.

Not down to Ayre but more to player and his preferences.

    ReplyDelete
  29. G'day Gano,
At the time they were signing predominantly domestic players, who were familiar with the club one way or another.

Now, signing a foreign talent is somewhat different culturally and of course, there's the generation gap between Baby Boomers and "Gen Me"

I'm 36 and despair at how shallow humanity is becoming almost every day...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Seriously, Liverpool should have sent KD for the negotiation instead of Ayre. Tello would for sure, after having the opportunity to speak at length with the clueless KD, not only refuse to stay at Barcelona, but he would also give up football altogether.

    ReplyDelete
  31. If Tello is unaware of Liverpool Football club, then is it any wonder they wont give him a squad number, Ian Ayre is not our Ambassador, he relates the contractual and monetary issues, if they need clarification.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That was the dark ages...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Could not agree more. Also Ayre does not strike as a strong negotiator. Daniel Levy on the other hand. This definitely ties in with FSG s vision. I don't see the point of the GM flying to Spain. The problem is I can't see Rush or Fowler having any more impact. Liverpool fans would know who they are not sure young Tello does...the club's recent history is hardly filled with revered world names. But FSG are a professional business lot, MBA Harvard types, I am sure in the next 12 months you will see something.

    ReplyDelete
  34. So our fans actually wanted us to not even buy the kid, but to take him on loan while he's still raw (and thereby not really of any major benefit to our team) and then send him back to Barcelona with the benefit of a year with the benefit of spending a year playing first team football elsewhere??

I was against the idea of buying Tello, and would've been even more against the idea of singing him on loan in the first place.

If we want to develop raw but talented kids, let's do it with our own players from our reserves (and I don't mean Flanagan or Spearing!)

    ReplyDelete
  35. So the FACT that Xabi Alonso is ACTIVELY ENCOURAGING  Sahin to choose LFC is not a big sway?

Secondly, you don't explain the main purpose of Ayre's visit which was to meet Sahin and try and negotiate a Tello loan.

Thirdly, I believe the intention of trying to sign players of this quality rather than the EPL usual suspects shows a much better INTENT than Hodgson or Dalglish.
The fact that Ayre even if he fails TRIED should be applauded.

I'd like an explanation from you JAIMIE why you believe that  sending Rush or Flower would be more persuasive than former player like Alonso  recommending personally that Sahin should come to LFC ?

I think many fans or here would like to hear your views....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Just so you know i know that its 'impressive' and not 'inpressive', lol.

Good examples, dont get me wrong i see your point, but i think anybody could sign a top player based on what they offer and how they act. I doubt Harry Redknapp was a major name when he signed some of the top players he has. He persuaded players like Suker to come to West Ham. I dont know what Ayre is like on a personal level but they say that footballers need to feel wanted etc and if Ayre could do that, roll out the proverbial red carpet then maybe he can do it? Maybe he has been picked by FSG because he is actually very impressive in that way? I dont think Shanklys style should be dismissed as it was 'the dark ages'. I'm far too young to have heard him speak properly but he sounds like he had an air about him that made you listen and believe in Liverpool FC. Maybe Ayre doea that, i dont know? But i dont think i know enough about the man to be dismissive of his signing/negotiating abilities.

  37. I always take these tansfer rumours with a pinch of salt to be honest, because 90% of them arent true. But I can understand if he has rejected Liverpool, because he is at Barcelona, who are pretty much the best team in the world, with some of the greatest players of our time.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is merely one of the reasons why it'd be in our interests to keep Pepe Reina at Anfield for a long period. We seriously lack continental pulling power in terms of our 'club ambassadors', and people with the charisma and respect within the Spanish game of Pepe Reina are few and far between.

  44. Tello could still join us on loan according to EVERYBODY. Before the new deal he was still under contract. Now hell just be under a new one. LFC are meeting his agents today.

    ReplyDelete
  45. We should send Reina and Jose Enrique to convince the kid, in case the conversation is lost during translation. Don't forget Mascherano is there as well....OK OK, it's just a joke. If the kid comes, he comes. Liverpool is an institution (like Bayern, Juve, Inter, etc); if the kid has not heard of us and needs an ex-player to come along to explain who we are, then something is really wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  46. We do not need to send famous ex-footballers to Madrid or Barca to impress youngsters when Alonso and Masch play at these 2 clubs. I'm sure they exert a bigger influence on the youngsters there than whoever we send.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jari Litmanen is an exRed and a legend in European football, he would be good, or Dietmar Hamann would be great, played in world cup finals, won nearly every cup on offer with LFC... we have had plenty more great players that could work well in this kind of position

    ReplyDelete
  48. Kenny would be the best i reckon

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wouldn't that give even more of a pull... the romantic idea of being part of something, reviving former glories.

  53. Look bud... Rafa had a great reign. He was tactically awesome and did some great great things for LFC. But, that being said, he broke my heart in many ways... not playing Crouchie and Torres up front, making weak subs, playing too defensively when our outstanding strength was undoubtedly attack. VORONIN (oh my god!) He also CHOKED when we could have won the league, got into a mental tussle with Fergie and came out second best.

Now... Look at Brendan Rogers, he is most definitely a strong character, he knows what he wants... the players all seem like they'd die for this man already in this short space of time. He's brought effective possession football back to Anfield. There is a certain belief building... THis man has backing and approval of some of the best coaches in the world, what's not to like? The season has not started and I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I can't see a better choice of manager... He's done a lot in a very short space of time, he's stood his ground where necessary. None of our important players have left the club! That's got to be saying something... Don't slate it till you've tried it!

Stop living in the past... this IS an exciting time for the reds.

  57. Honestly, I'm not convinced of Tello... Sahin - maybe... we have ample Talent in the youth. we need an impact player who has virtual guaranteed success. Even Gaston Ramirez I'm not super sure of (though I'm more convinced of him than the former). Top of the agenda still has to be Clint Dempsey for me! Experience, Guile, Craft and the attitude to match. We won't find a more suited player. Tello, Sahin will go quiet in games... Ramirez will do well.

Also defensive mid cover would be preferable... Loan Spearing, sell Adam!
But Dempsey, Ramirez, Defensive mid cover first, one of the others will be bonus!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think what we are all saying (to varying degrees) is that we need someone persuasive to encourage a foreign player to come to LFC.

I am going to propose my wife for the job!  She is the best negotiator I have ever seen.  Sometimes I have conceded without even knowing that I was in a negotiation!  Priceless!

But seriously I think there is merit in a fit young lady doing the initial head hunting for us

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree with Jamie, we should send a famous ex LFC player, with Ian Ayre, who could promote the club just by being there. And why wouldin`t any potential ambitious player, want to be part of LFC? were on the way back up! You will be eating those words mate very soon. Liverpools history is second to none, but our future will be the "ENVY" of all once again. In LFC and Brenden Rodgers i trust. C.O.Y.M.R

    ReplyDelete
  60. Dont you think Benitez could be a great bargining ambassadore for our club? he is respected by all european clubs and managers alike. FSG should appoint him and you would see a big difference in players and agents attitudes towards our great club. Ian Ayre just dosen`t have the same pull as Rafa i wonder why?

  62. i've read elsewhere that barca are offering him a new deal and will loan him for the season to us or arsenal because neither side wanted to agree to a buy back clause in his contract.

  64. Up untill last year city hadn't won the league for how long?
    muppet!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I rather think that LFC are simply "going through the motions" at this stage and have no intention of further buys this summer. It is a little like when last window went we all were told that they had "tried and tried" to bring in new players. I don't believe them and think this is yet another sop to them keeping the purse strings tightly closed. I can only hope that they have plans for a sensible introduction of some of the Academy youths over the coming season.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ian Ayre is not there to 'attract' players, he is there to go through details and finer contractual points with players who already, in principle, wish to come, so this article is another one of those 'i want to say something even though i have no idea' ones we see so often

    ReplyDelete
  67. If it's to convince Downing and Henderson, no thanks !

    ReplyDelete
  68. Tello is definitely a talent and hot prospect. Would love to see him here as a buy, not a loan. Spanish clubs like Barca and Rmadrid have a tendency of including buy back clauses on most players they sell so potentially if we buy Tello and develops into a beast then Barca will come knocking and there's not much we can do if they trigger the release clause.

    Quite smart to be honest.

Errrm. Money, maybe? Or else why did anyone join City, or before them Chelsea, or before them United....?

And surely an ambitious player may want to be remembered as part of the side that finally got the monkey off Liverpool's back???

    ReplyDelete
  70. Well put Ashley. Liverpool should forget attracting big name marquee players until we have an impressive finish in the table. Big names are not only attracted by money but also success. If you can offer both then it is icing on the cake.

    ReplyDelete
  71. it dosent look good how many players is that now its down to the manager he is told everyone he is a cheapskate WE are LIVERPOOL we should be paying top money for top players and wages to match We are not Swansea Brendan you are at a top club you give transfer targets no faith as your not thinking big  dont make the same mistakes as hodgsen look how that ended up tell them you are aiming high not 4th If you cant attract players which it looks like you cant get somebody who can as we do not have enough fire power and will struggle like last year without it

    ReplyDelete
  72. The problem is mate, Benitez would want some control, I dont think Rafa could just look at players, tap them up and then have no more imput, he would try and force himself into a director of football position and then probably try become manager and rogers made it clear he didn't want a director of football. Rafa has years of management left in him before he hangs up those boots and moves to a more D.O.F position... That's if anyone gives him a job, be been unemployed for a while now.
